I noticed that I’m still getting a carbon bleed off mark on my barrel while I’m supposedly in the “restrict non bleed off” setting. Ever seen that?
Wonder if the granularity isn’t perfect at 18 clicks. Like maybe it’s 90% restrict but still a little gas escapes?
@@narutobroken I'm not running restrict. I forget the settings, I'll have to check what the settings are. I had to tune each one different, barrel length and if I was running a can on some guns and not on others. Are you running a can?

He missed ALOT. You don’t buy a SA just to have an adjustable GB. You can buy one of those cheaper. SA gas blocks have a bleed off function. But it’s only working if you rotate the GB one direction. The other direction and it works like a typical adjustable. A bleed off is great for running suppressed so the gas doesn’t come back in your face, instead it is bled out the GB. Also, rather than where your brass is landing, I like to adjust mine based on bolt hold open. I close the GB all the way in the bleed off direction, load one round in the mag and fire. It obviously won’t hold open, so I load another, open the GB 2 clicks and repeat until it holds open. from there I open 2 more clicks and test 10x to ensure im going to have reliable feeding. If you want a gas block that has basic function like this guy showed, get an aero AGB for $40. not a $120+ SA.
I know this video is a few years old, but exactly what I needed to hear in order to adjust my superlative adjustable gas block. Concise, and well done.
Note: if your using a bleed off type, loosen the screw more from the 4.5 turn out position, to bleed gas off, thus reducing gas. Screwing it in will only restrict gas by blocking the hole with the screw. Max gas is 4.5 turns out. In or out will reduce gas,but out is the actual bleed off mechanism.
Thanks for that advice. I was on superlatives site and was wondering this. Im also wondering if he went clockwise to say 16 clicks or counter clockwise to say 20 clicks. Sounds like either way would be the same of adjustment. Counter clockwise= Restricting gas with bleed off mechanism. Clockwise=Closing, restricting gas with the screw. Correct me if im wrong. Thanks

The bleeder type, does that simply blast off excess gases under your handguard/onto-your-hand? I'm trying to decide if I want a bleeder or normal adjustable. Any help deciding would be greatly appreciated! It's going on a 13.9 Criterion CORE build, so it's going on and staying on after Pin & Weld.

yeah I just learned that today after having these for a year. I thought the bleed off just happened but no, so what I do is turn it out all the way with my can on and turn it in until the bolt locks open on last round. Then I turn it 2 more clicks for reliability.

One thing I also learned throughout the process of using and ADJ GB, especially for 300BLK, is that if the round gets lodged under the bolt it means you're under-gassed.

There is more to evaluating the gas sufficiency than just seeing where the brass goes. You also need to see if the bolt locks back after the last round is shot from the magazine. Without enough gas pressure through the gas block, the bolt won't lock back. So add this test to the process and you'll be all set.

Awesome video, I just ordered one that same adjustable gas blocks for my new build.
Okay this video brings up some questions. After noticing the brass pattern at “wide open”, you say you needed to “restrict” the gas flow since it’s over gassed. What you didn’t mention is that this gas block can either restrict gas (the screw’s position between all the way closed and 4.5 revolutions/wide open) AND it can bleed off excess gas (anything beyond 4.5 revolutions on the adjustment screw and when it reaches its limit). Running suppressed, the bleed off mode is preferred so it dumps extra gas out the front of the block, reduces fouling and heat as well as slows carrier speed down.

0 - 17 Pressure will depending on Round and if a suppressor installed, since its physically restricting the gas port
18 - This is full open, you should have max pressure. if ejecting past 4pm, reduce buffer weight/lighten spring/increase gas port (may also be misalignment)
19 to 48 The pressure is released once it reaches a max pressure. The higher the setting, the lower the pressure will be before venting. This will produce more constant pressure at the BCG and will take care of the difference between different muzzle devices. This should be set for the weakest type of ammo/device. Tul .223 and No muzzle device is a good baseline.
In the video he is using subsonic blackout, and the SA says that 300 blackout is not guaranteed to work. This is probably because the pressure in a typical 300 sub system is below the pressure that the SA device can regulate. In order words, bleed off mode will never engage due to the pressure being to low. So in this case all restrictive gas blocks would perform about the same.
0 is all the way clockwise and you rotate counter-clockwise to go up. 4 clicks per rotation.

Be aware that SA does not recommend the "restrictive mode" shown in this video. Apparently it can lead to adjustment screw seizure. The "bleed off mode" is preferred which allows excess gas to be discharged out of a port on the front of the block. Bleed off mode begins when the adjustment screw is turned beyond 4-1/2 turns out from fully closed (18-38 clicks).

Thanks for doing this I’m about 11.5 months into an atf wait on a 2 stamp HoneyBadger and I know they have adjustable gas blocks so it was good to see how you figure your adjustments. I’m normally an AK guy myself that’s what I’ve used for all of my training. Jim Fuller at Rifle Dynamics suppressor tunes all of my RD aks.

Kit Badger I’ve got Jim right now in the process of making me an AK74URD and I’m trying to figure out what can to put on it. You’re the second person to tell me Surefire sounds great on those AKs but I love Q as well so I’m torn which way to go.
I’ve never tried my Q cans on one. I’d look hard at them though with respect to weight.
Kit Badger that’s where they have the market best for sure is weight and quietness but I’ve heard great things about Surefire Cans like the mini30 and things like that. Rifle Dynamics just built an AK and the customer put I think a full Nelson or thunder chicken on it. I’ve seen pictures I’d love to hear it though. I think the AK build lead time is 4-6 months so I have time to investigate this. Thanks for the help bud.

The Superlative Arms Patented “Bleed Off”, direct impingement, gas block for the AR-15/AR-10/LR-308 platform adjusts the gas flow by bleeding the gas out of the front of the block instead of restricting the flow like conventional adjustable blocks. Results:
The pressure used in the block is reduced only to the amount required to drive the bolt carrier. The remaining gas / pressure are bled out of the block allowing the system to run much cleaner and cooler.
Reduction of felt recoil.
Patented adjustment detent is located outside of the block and therefore no contamination.
The gas adjustment screw does not restrict the gas flow; therefore there is no erosion or seizing of the screw / no loss of detent due to carbon build up. Although it is removable, we have added a safety mechanism, which stops you from unintentionally backing the screw all the way out.
When using SBR’s and / or suppressors the bleed off port allows the excessive pressure to be exhausted out of the block reducing blow back.
This is very important to remember. Keep turning the screw out (counterclockwise) to engage the bleed off feature, which is really what these adjustable SA blocks are all about.

So yes, you can use it like a “normal” adjustable gas block from 0 fully closed, to 18 clicks counterclockwise. Once you continue counterclockwise, at 20 clicks the adjustment screw backs out enough to allow gas to expel forward from the bleed off port adjacent to the screw. The whole purpose of the design was to minimize the amount of gas to operate the BCG, then bleed off the excess gas forward away from your face. My 300Blk needed 23 total clicks to cycle supers and subs without problem.

Read this if you’re contemplating on buying a SA adjustable gas block or not. I built a 10.5 inch 5.56 and it was super overgassed. I wanted to go a little cheaper route and not do too much work. I bought a red spring from Springco, didn’t do a damn thing. Then didn’t want to send it back, so I bought a super heavy buffer and used them together. Still didn’t do a damn thing. At that point I’ve spent more money on ordering both than I would have just buying a new gas block. Ordered the gas block, put it in and literally fixed everything. Don’t be like me. Buy once, cry once. Ha!

I gotta be honest, it took me a few minutes to figure out if clockwise and counterclockwise adjustments were relative to the 6 or 12 o’clock position. Behind the gun, clockwise is different from front of gas block (business end) position. Thanks for video. SA details how the blocks are shipped but never detailed from which position to reference adjustments!
It’s lefty loosey, righty tighty. So, clockwise is when you are looking down the barrel.
I cut bend off my wrench, drilled a small hole it the rod that comes with the kit. It's the rod to install a bushing or some shit.
Anyway, pressed that strait wrench into the rod and now I can adjust that block without pulling hand guard.

It’s good because you can run over gassed and shoot any any supersonic ammo without worrying about cycling issues. Or you fine tune it and run a smooth shooting machine
How do you like the clamp on Superlative arms adjustable gas block??? I've never used a clamp on before and I'm building a new 6.5 Grendel around a 20 inch Proof Research match barrel and was thinking about giving one a try...

Thanks man, I'm glad it was helpful. You can tune to a round or to a spectrum. But if you're just shooting suppressed, I would just tune it for that. And if there isn't enough pressure to run supers without a can, or too much pressure with supers and a can, I wouldn't worry about it until you decide you want to run supers.

just curious on this thought, by closing the gas port and shooting (lets say out of a 18" barrel), would the round travel faster and further? Just something that I don't know and looking for answers!
after your initial 4.5 counterclockwise rotations, what adjustment did you make to get to the sweet spot? You said "limited the gas a bit" did you go back in clockwise? or kept going out counter clockwise?
Before adding the gas block, were you having issues with it being undergassed for subs? Asking bc I have the same problem.
What size buffer are you using in that?
Have you tried adjusting the screw past 4.5 turns out? That way some of the gas would bleed out from the bleed hole, achieving the same intended sweet spot.

Curious question on a new PSA PA-10 in 308, when the brass ejects, it not only hits the deflector, it comes back and hits the bolt assist button. Would that be too much or not enough gas, the cases are landing in position 3.
Learning has taken place. Did the directions/timings for the direction of ejection come from a manual with the gas block or is this a more generalised concept for all ARs?
I can't take credit for it. And while I am sure the information is probably out there somewhere, I found it through Tony at Superlative Arms. He has been continually working on tuning rifles with his adjustable gas blocks and piston systems. He turned me onto using, for lack of a better word, the clock system, to judge gas systems.

My gas tube rides high into the receiver causing it to snag the gas key and sometimes get hung up. I thought a straight tube would fix it but now I notice you have a normal (bent) tube. Seeing that yours is a pistol length system, you have any ideas what’s wrong? I thought it was the gas hole being drilled slightly higher than Milspec but apparently that’s not an issue for you.
