My thanks to Rex Brown for talking with me these few weeks. Go support his new album when it's out! Head to the show notes for a list of all equipment mentioned today. www.whichbass.co.uk/RexBrownDown
I seen Rex with Down at Grant Street Lafayette Louisiana. I was let in the club early, as the guy who bought my ticket, was also a former roommate of peppers! I got to meet pepper and jimmy. Phil’s dad came to visit and the backstage was off limits. To us at least! I smoked a huge joint and stood in front of Rex the whole time! What an intense fuckin show! Love you Rex, you have a smokin tone and are a legend! Edit: also got to see pantera on the last show of 151 tour in Biloxi. It felt like the place was gonna collapse! Rex had 6 8/10 cabinets. Whether he was using all 6 I don’t know. But It damn well felt like it
You really do a fantastic job on these. This project had to be huge and you went way down the rabbit hole for us. It was over the moon-cool to see Rex in your interview being gracious and accommodating. I'm glad you got that experience with him and hope for more like that with others. I kind of feel like this project was akin to watching an "I have arrived!" moment on your part. Well deserved. Give yourself a bit of a pat and keep up the great work. Ya done good! Liked and subbed.
Thank you so much for the kind words Justin, I really appreciate that. Getting in touch with Rex was a real pinch yourself moment for sure. Fingers crossed I can bring a few more heavy hitters to the channel. Thanks again, glad to have you watching!
Thanks Igor, glad you enjoyed it. I know you're still waiting! Sorry about that, not enough time in the day! Hopefully I'll get to Paul and Shavo soon.
My suggestion is one that's a little left field of the usual rock and metal of the show, I think Tina Wymouth of the Talking heads could make for an interesting episode.
Rex has always had a great bass tone and it just got better and better with every album in my opinion. His sound on the second and third Down albums is just a perfect rock/metal bass tone...
I LOVE the bass tone on DOWN III! "On March the Saints" and "Nothing in Return" have such smooth bass lines/tone. Time to go re listen to that album and listen to the bass in particular 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥❤️
I wish there were more bass rig videos like this. Us bass players are always so overshadowed by guitarist, drummers and vocalists. It's a shame cause the bass really gives music that thickness that would otherwise be bland. Oh and I allow the ads to play all the way through so that you get even a little more ad revenues. I recommend everyone else do the same!
Joshua, I sincerely appreciate that dude. Thank you so much. I work on this channel in my spare time so every little bit of support like that helps to make it easier. I totally agree, everyone talks about guitar players, that's why I'm here. I love bass, I wanted to know what the best use and thankfully you do too!
Cool to see his post-Pantera stuff, great stuff as always. I would definitely love to see Entwistle or Myung, but also how about Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic, John Paul Jones, Gene Simmons or Sting in the future as well?
his tone is one of my favorites of all time. Maybe there could be a little more punch to it, but tbh he fills out those sonic gaps that Dime leaves brilliantly. It's one of the few times that a bass player following the lead actually adds and isnt just lazy. He often enough would deviate from the main line though coming up with some cool grooves
Haha thanks Cruise, speaking of "Radio Show" I'll be co-hosting a Podcast with Rodney McG very soon. I hope you can join us! I'll announce it on the channel when we have the details.
Awesome video my man!👍 I always wanted a "Spector" bass ever since I saw The Jeff P. from "Dokken" Design with a big eye in the center of the body. It was a sick design!🎸👌✌
Great work! I would love to see an episode on Perry Richardson from Firehouse as that tone he has is absolutely awesome. Something about those one guitar bands that really force the bass to stand out
14:47 I think that's a Gibson Firebird Studio 70's Tribute, not a Thunderbird. I know, I have one myself :-) Excellent video as usual! So cool that you got to interview him!
I haven't checked my subscription box in like 3 months and totally missed out on your video. I'm probably too late for suggestions, but I'll still throw a vote towards Alex Webster because he's my all time favorite. I even have 2 of my basses signed by him.
Sorry it took me a few days to catch up with this one... Great work as we've come to expect (and you do not disappoint). I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for that dUg Pinnick multi-vid showcase (that one WILL be a task, I know, but I'm still hoping) but I'd be down for Alex and Thunderfingers as well. Thanks again Alfie, great work.
Thanks Scott! I'm glad you made time, I appreciate that. I'll get to dUg one day for sure. I feel like every option is a heavy hitter atm and it'll take forever to cover one person quickly. Too many options! We'll get there Scott :D
Good evening Alfie, another fantastic video, I think it was Adam Clayton who came up with the Reverso bass with Warwick... just flip the explorer style. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Incredible research, man! Still waiting for Paul Gray. Oh, and Shavo Odadjian.
Thanks Igor, glad you enjoyed it. I know you're still waiting! Sorry about that, not enough time in the day! Hopefully I'll get to Paul and Shavo soon.

Rex Brown's best tone was on Far Beyond Driven. Such a great Thrash Metal bass tone.

Three criminally underrated bassists spring to mind.
Tom Hamilton
Pat Badger
Mike Mills
Love Pat Badger's tone and playing.
Great choices there thanks Bob, I'll look into it.
+1 for Mike Mills
I love the follow up. The interview was absolutely great..
Thanks Fender J! Nice to see you dude, glad you stopped by!
This is great, do you think you could do a video about Mike Starr of Alice In Chains (R.I.P)
how about a Starr/Inez crossover?
Sure! I'll look into it. I'll see what I can do.
That would be so wicked...
Yes! That bass tone on Dirt is so great. The intro to "Would?" is just plain beautiful!
Hell fuckin yess

How about the great Gary Thain, the Kiwi bassist from the classic Uriah Heep line-up? Are you a fan of his?
Interesting suggestion Dave, I like it! I only listen to Uriah when it's on in the radio, I'm not a diehard fan if you like but I enjoy their tunes!
could the Gibson Rex Brown Talent range be replaced by the Nikki Sixx G2 range?
there’s been no news on the Talent range since the previous interview.
