      One sign of a great bassist is when a lone guitarist can step out and ake a solo with no backing rhythm track and it doesn't sound like the heaviness disappeared. Rex delivered this like no other. Tim from RATM is another example of this. Many bands record a rhythm track of guitar for this purpose in the studio then when you see them live they sound weak during every guitar solo. Pantera did not have this problem because Rex knew how to craft great bass lines that traveled between the drums and guitar riff while having the heavy crushing tone that held the low end down while having a grinding mid range.

    • @zakarhaavevuo2574

      I don't think Rex is underrated. Anyone who knows their Pantera knows that he is a true monster on the bass. Huge tone, lines mean AF and a tight, TIGHT player. Gotta put on some tunes now😎

      @@dankhill6851 It's very easy for the bassist to overplay and step all over the tune. The greats know when to step out with the drums and push the rhythm or stay in the background and carry the song. Rex liked to compliment the vocals as well with his bass playing, you can hear it in songs like This Love and Floods. Not every bassist needs to play like Jaco.

      I think it’s that the bass was buried in the mix, for obvious reasons, as it was hard for it to cut through the guitar tone. And from that it leads people to not really hear his great input. Obviously for musicians, we can appreciate his work, but for others, it’s kind of overlooked.

Also, Pantera was a band with one guitar, and this fact shows how Brown was talanted and skilled player. He did great support to Dime's riffs and harmonics. I was once asked a number of years ago who IMHO had the loudest BASS rig. Without hesitation I advised that this would be as follows: Old school Rex Brown new school John Campbell. Rex had the enviable task of keeping up with Dime and Vinnie and had zero issues doing so. Rex always had the timing that was needed to keep the Pantera groove working. I must agree with Petey Grizz, it is about damn time that Rex Brown was RECOGNIZED for his efforts.

    Thanks for another informative video. Regarding tunings, it's not always +40 cents like Rex was quoted, it could be +/- 40 or 50 or 25/30/whatever cents. Right now there are many of their songs with isolated instrument tracks available (full Vulgar and Trendkill albums and couple more songs as well) where one can easily determine the tuning in software like Transcribe. For example, Mouth for War is in E -40 cents, Hostile is E -50 cents (right "between" E and Eb), This Love (this is where he used the mentioned piccolo-stringed bass, it's even on separate track) is Eb +30, etc. I have no idea why he said "we always used Drop D", because they used E, Eb, D, C# for sure, not to mention going super low on Underground in America and Sandblasted Skin. And looking at how he plays certain D tuned songs, it looks like not just one string is 'dropped', but all strings are tuned down.

    • @WhichBass
      @WhichBass  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the insight Gilassp, that's really interesting. It all sounds so convoluted. I just keep my bass in one tuning ... Keeps it simple XD

    A fellow bass nerd here, as I’m sure most are.. I heard the auctions For his gear came up because Rex was in tax trouble (I cannot confirm this) and when he switched from Spector that Stu was so mad that he (Stu) threw a new bass because Rex didn’t even say anything to Stuart about it. I guess for obvious reasons Warwick was courting him for a long time.

    • @WhichBass
      @WhichBass  4 роки тому

      I did read the speculating tax reasons being the reasons for his auctions. He was in the hole for a few $450k which isn't pretty. Where did you hear Stu threw a bass at him?! I need to put that in my next video if you have a source!
