I'm glad you pointed out the fact during Darrell's solos . We heard only the bass and drum lines accompanying . It made Pantera stand out that much more. Also yes Rex was very blues based. He was also the one player in the band whom was classically trained as a guitarist and bassist ( alongside other instruments ) I was fortunate enough to see a Pantera live 4 times between 97 - 2000 . They never played to a metronome / click track but they were always phenomenally tight . They could read each other's minds on that stage. I've never once saw Rex miss a note , play the wrong notes nor even come close to losing his place for even a fraction of a second . Rex , Vinnie and Dime we're always locked in impeccably so . Then they had Phil whom would sing behind the beat ( for many different songs ) alternating between metronomically perfect to purposefully singing a hair behind the bar line and or beat . Made Pantera easily the most influential Heavy Metal band in the past 32 years . I'd go as far as to say the most influential band period since Cowboys From Hell dropped in 1990 .

Rex Brown, so underrated !!! This man supported one of the most powerful metal bands of the 90', overall, when Dime was soloing !!

Rex is underrated and I have no idea why. Being able to play perfectly along Dimebag is something only a handful of people can do

One of my favorite bassists of all time, together with Vinnie, one of the hardest tightest hard hitting rhythm section ever!
Speaking of groove metal Sean Ysseult was also part of an awesome rhythm section in White Zombie!

Definitely missed the band sound when Rob went solo.Rob had some good songs, but creativity fizzled out eventually too.Sean was my favorite one note artist along with Ian Hill of Judas Priest and the late great Dusty Hill of ZZ Top.

1 minute in and I had to pause ⏸️ . Simply to say Pantera's 1988 Power Metal record is actually very Heavy . Not in comparison to much of 1990s CFH - Reinventing The Steel but Power Metal ( with help of then new singer Phillip H . Anselmo ) saw PANTERA become a Heavy Metal freight train . Also presented some of Phil's most intricate vocal patterns . I'd say R.I.T.S. and Trendkill were his finest vocal performances but those Rob Halford style vocal lines he delivered for Power Metal should be more well known and credited than they have been these past 34 years .

He only seems underrated because he was in a band with the Abbott brothers & Phil Anselmo, that’s the definition of a band of heavy hitters right there! Rex seems slightly in the shadows just in that line-up but easily holds his own. Pantera is just a powerhouse band, you just don’t get many bands of this ilk.

Man, Rex is so underrated. Such a beast. Dime was such a charismatic and explosive guitar player that he stole so much attention but Rex was so vital to their sound and groove. IMO, Rex's tone is the pinnacle of metal bass tone. Spector and Ampeg > All. These new age Dingwall/Darkglass guys need to put some respect on his name.

i think rex brown use walking bass, because the first music genre he was introduced when he was a child it was jazz.
i think he played jazz guitar when he had 12 years old

He’s often overlooked and it’s a shame because he was an equally important part of the machine that was Pantera… legendary player, always did the exact perfect things the songs needed, no more or less same as Vinnie
      Fuck I miss Pantera

If you go back to Van Halen that's the reason there's no rhythm guitar behind the solo's most of the time. #VanFuckingHalen

  • @mikechecka292

Even metal bass players do not follow the guitars 100% of the time. Tom Araya is a great examp!e of a guy who knows exactly when NOT to mirror the guitars.
I do not believe scooped mids are a part of Rex's sound. Anyone that understands frequencies and how to get a good live sound out of a band knows that if your guitar player scoops the mids on his rig the bass player should boost his mids in order to fill that sonic space which allows the bass to be heard without muddying up the guitars or sounding like the kick drum. I assume that you are a guitar player because a lot of what you said in this video are common misconceptions about bass that guitar players tend to make. People that play six string guitar think that they can play bass as well. They think bass is easier because there are less strings, you only have to play one string at a time, and you just follow the guitar and thump on the root notes. You might pull this off enough to convince yourself you are pretty good but eventually you are going to be playing a gig and you will sound so bad that you will be back to playing in your garage.

What the fuck are you yapping about ? Do your research and check his account, as it shows he’s the bass player in his band, someone’s got a chip on his shoulder against guitar players lmao? And clearly YOU don’t know shit about the EQ, because it’s very clear Rex has a mid scoop, just use your ears, and yes what you said about guitar players scooping mids, means bass should boost mids, but that has nothing to do with what he said in the video. Odd chap you are.
