Original Cowboy from Hell bassist Rex Brown has gone through so much gear. He’s lost amps and donated basses to charity. He’s fostered many fruitful friendships with companies that’s resulted signature wares for war. His latest partnership has him riding high on a pair of namesake Thunderbirds dressed in black and gold. He still tours with old Spectors who feel like home (if home was a thunderstorm). He’s got a proper pedalboard and rack gear that’s been routed through a RJM switcher (first time ever). And he and tech Bobby Landgraf (also guitar player in Honky and Down for Down IV - Part II) detail the whole chain of tonal command. Then we have a blast chatting with Zakk Wylde who covers his toolbox of Warhammers and Master 100 heads. He ponders what it must’ve been like to have been Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhoads who toured with their iconic instruments and not having any backups! And then his longtime tech Stephen Murillo goes over his rack gear that includes three pieces from Dimebag Darrell’s original Pantera rig.

Thanks everyone for the support and positive feedback! This has been a dream one (along with last week’s Tool episode) I’ve been chasing since I helped start this channel. Like many of you, Pantera is a big part of my musical DNA, and it’ll never be the same without Dime and Vinnie Paul, I’m happy to celebrate the Cowboys from Hell’s undeniable catalog of crushers. Enjoy!! ❤🤘🙏
Great job representing the channel, CK!
When I lived in LA id see Zakk & Rex around. I can tell you straight up- they really warmed up to you. They showed ya respect. Whatever you did, it worked. Great job💯🎸🎤
Jesus man, what an insight, the wheels that make the clock tick. Rex isn't even my favorite bass player (I like Steve Harris and Chris Novoselik) but the engineering behind these shows gives me a case of the giggles. Really, really cool video. I love it🤘
Chris your passion for this Rig Rundown really shines through in the video! It was great to have a real fan doing these interviews! Thanks :D
It was so great to hear your intro and I’m so pumped that the show has grown to this point! Keep going!!
Seeing Pantera live, Rex's was the best bass tone I've ever heard.
CRUSHING!!
Always a treat seeing Rex Brown
He has such a positive stoner vibe

Awesome interview.. I met Rex years ago at a local bar and happen to be wearing of course a Pantera shirt from the Trendkill Tour and he started talking like we've known each other forever. Talk about Family he ended up pulling a table up to ours and we just talked and joked the entire time. Truly one of the nicest and most genuine guys you'll ever meet. We weren't going to be one of "those guys" who wanted to ask for an autograph or picture cause we could see a guy who just wanted to enjoy some time out. After about 5 hours he had moved on but the entire time we ordered something to eat or drink he took care of it. As he was leaving he told me to take a walk outside where we just bullshitted for a few more minutes then offered a picture. FAMILY since that moment he cemented his place in mine. #Family
Dude that is absolutely amazing!! And all the respect for just being able to enjoy the moment and not ask for his signature,
You're videos of the Nashville show look alot like mine, we must have been sitting pretty close
This is the FIRST bass player I've ever actually paid attention to. Freaking Rex. I'm from Shreveport, a city with a HUGE connection to Pantera. Almost a 2nd home for them in the 80s. They met Phil here after a show one night and he joined the band. A week later, they came back and played their first show with Phil RIGHT HERE.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING ❤️🙏
It’s awesome seeing Zakk play one of his old best buddies music for him, sure it’s bitter sweet , emotional none the less. I’m happy that Zakk got much closer to his lost friend in this way , and I’m glad they played the music . Good job love the rig run downs.
It was already enough that Zakk honors Dime at every Black Out Society(😂) concert. I can't imagine how emotional this is for him. Zakk has a huge heart, as shown by how he stuck up for his best friend, EX-MLB star Mike Piazza when someone asked Zakk if Mike was gay. Zakk knocked the guy out.
Not because he's homophopbic but because the guy disrespected his best friend. It was a known cheap shot to say Mike was gay back in the day. So, the guy only asked it to be a D bag in the first place.
@@J.C...that's funny because I have a friend that used to play with Zack and he said him and his wife are control freaks and assholes
Zakk is always just stoked to talk about his favorite musicians no matter what the question was lmao. After all these years and feats he accomplished hes still just a mega fan. Love to see that, man!
This is the one I have been waiting for. And I can tell the host is a fan.
I like how Zakk has a nickname for everyone “Saint” Dime and “Saint” Randy and “King” Edward
I liked "Lord Iommi". It fits.
Father Marshall
The "Vatican" must be what Zack calls his studio?
Really interesting to see how Zakk has found a middle ground to keep things authentic to Dime's sound while keeping his own character as well. Great video, as always.
Gradittude to the whole Pantera family putting this together! It sounds & looks great. I had a blast in Nashville & others. Getting better every show. Thank you all so much🤘🏻
Sorry, but there is no "whole" Pantera family without VINNIE AND DIMEBAG!
@@e-mail881 you have to be the one dipshit that ruins a tribute to a band that people as whole celebrate .even though dime n vinnie around there the bands family still did good
Getting better every show? This isn't the new band buddy. You'll never replace them. You're out of your mind if you think Zack can replace Dime
Nobody is trying to replace anything. You can’t replace or even re-live what it once was. Even if the brothers were still alive we the audience are old as fuck now so it just wouldn’t be the same. It’s ok. They are only trying to give fans the chance to hear the music live, performed to the best that they can currently be done and in that Zakk & Charlie are doing awesome. Arenas are full of people so I’m not alone in that thought apparently.
@@foxtrotsteve AMEN!!
Nice to see and hear Rex using his NS2 for the sounddemo. Still in deep love with my NS2 from 1987.
Nothing makes a musician more content being interviewed then getting asked about their craft. They are so eager and humble about what makes their sound and feel while playing various songs on stage and in the studio. Rex is such a class act as is the bass tech. Great down to earth guys. Can't praise Zach and Charlie any higher, what a great fit on bringing the closest sound and feel of Dime and Vinny. Phil is such an inspiration on where he has been through and is still here kicking serious ass and sounding amazing. Not an easy feat considering the bar he set for himself. Long live the Southern Metal Titans 🤘🏼❤️
Devil giggers
Rex seems like such a cool down to earth cat. He is absolutely my favorite bass player ever. He always knew just what a song needed and knew when to push it and when to lay back.
Hes an idiot
God I wish Dime and VP were here for this. Seeing everyone grown up, chilled out, and actually enjoying themselves and not just having a constant party is something I think Dime would've really liked. I think he'd have straightened up like most of us do. Like Rex did. Like Phil finally did.
Rita has said it before, that Damageplan were actually having problems with their singer. She firmly believes that Dime and Vinnie would have made amends with Phil and we'd have had a Pantera reunion with the boys back together again
They wouldn't be okay with this money grab bulshit. Everyone wants to say this is just a tribute but it's not. You're out of your mind if you think Zack can take dimes place
@@Hammersmashed68Rita is a sellout, it doesn't matter what she thinks, Dime is not here to say anything. Worse, Vinnie died saying he wouldn't reunite Pantera until then.
@@squarehammer4619It's Phil's fault, Zakk has stated that he wouldn't record anything under the Pantera name. The Wiki page of the band is already rewritten to sound like this is "a continuation of the band", desecrating Dime and Vinnie's memory. It's just fiIthy behavior from so-called fans and Phil.
@@squarehammer4619 Nobody can ever fill those shoes that Dime & Vin wore!! But these 2 gentleman have picked up their game immensely!!
Dime & Vince are with us every night!! If you don't Likey don't watch!!
I saw pantera last night in Quebec City. Zakk was awesome , everything was perfect !!!
I saw them in Baltimore Saturday February 24th was a great show also very fun
I need to go see them.. I never got to see the original lineup 🤯🕊🕊 and it would be a great first live show to go see since before the pando.

I was fortunate enough to catch Pantera , Sepultura and Prong opening on Far Beyond Driven tour in 1994 Vancouver British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦 at the PNE Forum. It was an insane show ! 😮 my ears were ringing for 3 days and I was spent … 😄 What an incredible show! I went totally nuts and ached for days ! 🤭 a long time later I actually was quite lucky and met Vinny 18 years later( he was on a promotional run for his Signature DW snare drum and meeting fans for fun 👍🏻 ) in 2012 and had him autograph the concert shirt from Far Beyond Driven tour ! He said “ Holy Sh!t I was in Pantera and even I haven’t seen that shirt in a very long time ! I’d be proud to sign that brother!” 😄 and he also signed a the Damageplan CD and Cover. Vinny was exactly what you hoped he would be when you meet a rockstar… Friendly , Funny as all hell and just as cool of a person as you could hope to meet.🤟🏻🙂👍🏻
You saw a Pantera cover band. I saw the real Pantera in the 90s
Amazing..
The ‘Floods’ footage at the end (I’m guessing this is soundcheck??) was very emotional, tugging at the ‘ol heart strings.. Love it..
Thank you 🤘🤘🤘
Soundcheck from their day in Memphis.
I’m beyond thankful that Pantera was my #1 band growing up and still to this day. I may come from a poor family but it’s very cool because I can play guitar surrounded by my family they mean everything to me and my guitar playing (when it comes to hobbies)
Another really good rig rundown, thanks for the revisited Zakk Wylde rig rundown, and I'm even more stoked you got Rex to talk about his legendary bass rig with help from Bobby Landgraf and Steve.
I'm not even a big Pantera fan, but Rex is one of the coolest down to earth guys. And has a killer tone too
Finally y’all get to meet Grady the greatest tech ever. This one is bittersweet. Texas pride. Rip Dime we miss you
Grady is the best tech and an awesome dude.
Grady is not in the video
Grady teched for dime but that zaks tech. Not grady
I HEARD THAT! Back in the 80s, Shreveport, where I'm from, was almost a 2nd home for them. Hell, Shreveport is how and WHY the Abbott brothers and Rex met Phil, at Circle in the Square in Downtown Shreveport. Phil joined the band that night after their Shreveport friends spent many many nights persuading them to meet Phil. They finally did and that was ALL SHE WROTE! 👊👌
Wtf are you talking about lol Grady isn’t in this.
As a guitarist rex brown is one of my favorite musicians ever. His TOAN, HIS GROOVE. The backing bassline to the floods solo makes it my favorite dimebag moment. Rex is an excellent bass player that knows how to back up an exceptional guitarist
Thanks, Chris, Perry, PG, for another truly blockbuster RR!! I appreciate the sacrifices and jumping hoops to bring this RR to us. Pantera was special for us in the 90s. Their music, their antics on and off stage(vulgar videos) inspired so many of us to pick up and play and start our own bands!! RIP Dime and Vinnie the true CFH
Man, I’m I the only guitar player who thinks “Live In A Hole” is Dime’s Magnum opus???
Everything about that song is killer! The 3/4 intro, the Solos, the pre-verse with the pinch harmonics! I think later it transitions from 9/8 to 3/4!!
The guy put solid state amps on the map… Who does that?!
No.. You’re not!! I’ve been listening to that song a lot!! Me & Dime were just trading riffs one afternoon & came across what I call “the unilateral Pantera groove”!! Hats off to Chris & the boys…
Its great to see Rex doing so well and Zak as always keeping it real. What a trip this must be for Chris to get to listen to this band live!
Great rig rundown guys!
seriously choking back tears at the end of zakks interview. thanks to the host for saying what we were thinking. thanks to pantera rip dime and vinnie. cfh 4-life
At the end of the day, we're all just fans of the music!
Yeah, he couldn't stop plugging his signature gear. I was a little choked up myself.
You were holding back tears? 😂
Grady! Grady! Grady! 🙏❤️
That story of him screwing with the knobs on the MXR Doubler is hilarious! 😂 That's exactly the stuff you expect to hear about Dime. He was that guy. Such a down-to-earth human being.
After seeing Charlie’s yesterday I had a feeling that this one would be coming, I loved the first one with Zakk so it was awesome having another revised one with him as well as Rex. Class work as always, guys, fucking loved it and definitely one of your best so far
Good job guys. And thanks for this one, I know it’s as special for y’all as it is for us. I saw the boys play here in Michigan last week and they were phenomenal. PANTERA FOREVER.
PG and Chris has been killing it lately, thanks for this and the Justin / Tool rundown. Rex is one of my Bass Gods!
there was no one who could carry that gig and do it with respect and justice than Zakk.... glad they're able to bring the music back to the stage.... and, what can I say, Charlie is the best thrash drummer of all time.... one of the greatest drummers, any genre, of all time.
Thanks for doing this rundown.... it was fantastic.
As a long time Pantera fan, this is amazing. Thank you!
Top shelf footage of these musicians...thank you brothers and sisters
Great video. I especially enjoyed Zakk's segment. I love the clip of him playing the lead to "Floods". My favorite Dime lead....💚🎸
I love how every video I see of zakk he’s always like “saint rhoads , saint dime , father rhoads , father Edward “ always makes me laugh , good guy
Really love and appreciate these guys and the music they've been rockin all these years.
One of the coolest, most down to earth dudes in hard rock metal, period. Rex has ALWAYS been so solid live, dude holds it down. Great tone! Thanks for this video y'all!!!
This was a great clip! Thank you so much for putting this together guys.
Wow this is the best Rig Rundown EVER. Dime would be proud.
Because their trash?
What the fuck are you talking about?@@johnsmith-bk4ps
So what the fuck does that mean?@@johnsmith-bk4ps
You keep deleting my message. FUCK YOU@@johnsmith-bk4ps
Lots of fellow bassists I’ve talked to who try to get Rex’s tone forget one important key aspect…a big part of that “Rex Brown Grind” is the fact that he tuned way down (a full step or more) but still used standard gauge strings. That “flop” contributes to that grindy tone big-time. One of the meanest tones in metal! 🤘🏼
🤘 Rex uses 105’s?
Been waiting for this since i saw the IG post 🤘🤘🤘. As a bass player myself im so glad you got rex's rig
God this rig rundown gave me the chills and also fighting back some tears.
fkn awesome rig rundown...you know it's LOUD when the audio clipping when Rex playing :) and honestly, god bless ZW. God bless that man.
I watch all these as soon as they drop but this was one of the very best.
I’m from south Texas. People talk about the overly used “y’know” as if Dime, Vin, or he does it purposefully. But it’s the same as anyone elsewhere says “ummm” or whatever. Southern drawl. Grew up listening to Pantera. 6yrs old for Cowboys. 39 now. Love this interview.
Honestly so glad they put this thing together, saw them at Tons of Rock last year and it was amazing. I've been a Pantera fan for so long, and it was great to finally hear the music live, the way it was meant to be experienced.
Anyone who says this is just a cash-grab can eat my entire ass, Phil, Rex, Charlie and Zakk stepped up their game for this, it's about honouring the legacy of Pantera and the Abbott brothers, bringing the music out to us all that weren't able to experience it back in the day. Bucket list experience for me.
Thank you for bringing this rig review man it was fucking rad
Zakk is always so kind and genuine... down to earth guy.... and helluva player
Back in '11 or '12 I ran into, I think it may have been, Bobby at a laundromat in, Weatherford, Texas. I had a Vulgar Display patch on my jacket and he said he worked for, Rex and was fixin' to go on the road for, Kill Devil Hill. Anyway, he gave me a bunch of promo shit! Reinventing promo poster, Rex pick, Down '02 Japan pick, and a Down sticker. Had it all chillin' in the trunk of his car, lol! If that was, Bobby and this comment reaches you, thank you again, man! Added another Pantera story on the list! Nearly half DFW has at least one Pantera story of the band or crew, lol
