When I was a child I watched my father try to kill my mother. Any girl I wanted but I stay away. Because I know that Eventually they're going to want to have kids that I don't want to bring kids to this horrible world anyway Great video. This was the anthem of the rejected and invisible people for my generation. I've found very few people back then and now who it didn't affect. It's a timeless song, there will always be unrequited love and this song expresses it beautifully. And, this performance is I think one of the best ever.

      I think more than that, it's not just unrequited love. It's feeling so overwhelmed by someone that you don't even try, because they are so far above you. Divine even. Different people probably feel this to different extents, but I think everyone has had at least a version of this, where you become infatuated with someone who is off limits for any reason, and coming to terms with the fact you'll never get to show them how you feel. It also then covers impeccably the complete dejection and self loathing you then feel about yourself as a result. Even if normally you have quite a good relationship with how you look/your inner faults etc.

    This is the story behind it!
    When asked about the song in 1993, Thom Yorke said, "I have a real problem being a man in the '90s… Any man with any sensitivity or conscience toward the opposite sex would have a problem. To actually assert yourself in a masculine way without looking like you're in a hard-rock band is a very difficult thing to do… It comes back to the music we write, which is not effeminate, but it's not brutal in its arrogance. It is one of the things I'm always trying: To assert a sexual persona and on the other hand trying desperately to negate it."
    So it’s quite deep really, so there you go!

    If you enjoy great songwriting, musicianship and vulnerable honest engaged performance, you won't beat Radiohead. And they've only gotten better. If you want some tear jerkers, try "Fake Plastic Trees", "Pyramid Song", "Nude", "Daydreaming", "Codex"... but pretty much half their catalog should make any grown man cry. Radiohead's a full album type of band. If you enjoy their music, well worth indulging on your own. Every album since The Bends is a masterpiece.

    • @memetherapy
      @memetherapy 2 роки тому

      @@DarkLordoftheMeme Interestingly enough, I Will is an older song than Like Spinning Plates (despite their releases), and Like Spinning Plates came out of Thom reversing an old more electronic version of I Will and being inspired by how the progression and melody sounded backwards. So a backwards version of I Will inspired Like Spinning Plates... which ended up being its own song with the studio version being recorded by having Thom listen to the reversed version of Like Spinning Plates, learning the reversed melody, singing the reversed melody which was then reversed it to put it back in the right order, but have it still have that reverse suction effect. My head hurts now.

    Broken hearts and unrequited love have created some of the world’s greatest art. Thom Yorke wrote this song while still at university, after falling for an ”it girl”, and the sentiment I suspect is something we’ve all felt at some point in our youth: While we’re still not entirely sure of who we are, or what we are truly worth, a rejection can build up to a catastrophe. The song dropped in the early 90s though, so I’m sure Thom has bounced back. ;)

  • @tonygriffin_
    @tonygriffin_ 2 роки тому +123

    Loved everything you said about Thom's emotion in his voice. It was a song that meant a lot to him but not one that he felt represented the sound of the band, which was moving in another direction. Which was why this 90's performance was one of the last times they performed the song until I think, at Glastonbury in 2017. This is, as your face showed and your words described, a majestic performance from Thom, especially those held notes, and a very skilled piece of playing from the guitarist too.

    Thom Yorke is hands down one of my favorite vocalists in rock history. To think they hated this song and didn't play it live for a long time, but I think it hits almost everyone who hears it because almost all of us have felt the emotion in it at some point. Nailed it! This song is perfect and so is your reaction. You really connected with it the way so many others have over the past thirty years. That guy you see on the mic is Thom Yorke. Story goes that he had a major crush on a girl at university but couldn't approach her - just didn't feel worthy. He admired her from a distance for a while, following her around (creeping) but only summoned the courage to talk to her on one particular evening when he'd had a few drinks. Appatently he opened up a bit too much/early about his strength of feelings for the girl, she got weirded out and ran off, leaving him feeling emotionally a bit 'fragile'. I suppose writing this song was his way of coping with the pain ..... a pain most of us have had a taste of at some point. Most of us just don't possess the talent or the sheer guts to put it in an iconic song like this one though. Thanks again

    • @betts_simone
      @betts_simone Рік тому

      as the story goes...well who really knows, musicians may not actually say what a song they wrote is about, sometimes they make up shit, true artists don't "explain" their creativity and personal events, for writing a song, some are just songs, not to read too much into them..even if Thom said that who knows if he's actually divulging the "true" story, even if there was one..if you know what i mean..musician here.

I often think about how that must have made her feel. There was at least one other girl, this one I talked to more regularly and she was in my grade, in both cases it was more my own insecurity than any lack of interest on my part, at the time I just interpreted their interactions with me as just friendliness and not interest. I’m glad you gave a thoughtful reaction to Creep. It’s pretty well known that Thom dislikes the song and they rarely play it LIVE. You’re right, when he’s singing, there is no one else there but him… it’s very personal to him. Radiohead is probably the most underrated bands going, right now. There discography, including solo and experiment CD’s and singles is mind boggling. Once you take that step and slip into that rabbit hole… there’s no gettin’ out. I’ve been following them since the late eighties and I can honestly say that they are the only band that actually gets better with each album. Do everyone a favor, react to “LET DOWN,” the LIVE version. Geniuses…..

    Sofia
    1 year ago (edited)
    He wrote this song about a crush (I mean he was completely in love) he had in college, she was the most beautiful girl and he felt he was too ugly for her, like out of her league, so one day he got a little bit tipsy to have confidence and confess but she got scared of him and run.
    Later when this song got popular and they did a concert for mtv or something, that girl went and he got so emotional and kinda cried, his vocal wasn't the best in that concert but for a lot of people that was the best performance because of the emotions he transmitted

    To me it's the grunge sound of the band that makes people feel, along, of course, with his voice, but if either one of those elements were missing, it wouldn't be the same.
    Which is why I prefer the Haley Reinhart version much more. Because Haley can illicit the same effect more or less with her own voice alone. He needs the background music and all Haley needs, is her voice to accomplish he same effect.

    'Who hurt him'?
    Society since the 80s was gradually being taught more and more men are born wrong, corrupt and evil. Guilty until proven innocent, never good enough unless you're renounce your own biological imprint.
    There's been no celebration of traditional family values in media since then, rather a gradually increasing condemnation of it. Fathers in media have been every more portrayed as the incompetent, if not down right malicious fathers.
    You can see how far it's come.
    This song resonates with men growing up in a society that ever increasingly disenfranchises, alienates and ostracize them.
