A personal heavy story of myself, regarding this song: I have a very severe, rare type of chronic depression. One time, about 3+ years ago, i've had it. I ended up laying there on the sidewalk during the song, stayed there for about 3-4 hours contemplating. I then got up and went back home. This song preserved my life.
Chris Cornell's voice is one of the greatest EVER. Check out Chris's vocals in Audioslave's songs "I Am the Highway", "Show Me How to Live", and "Cochise". He was also the lead singer for Soundgarden in the 90s... he killed it on "Burden in My Hand", "Black Hole Sun", and "Vasoline".
Or if you want double enjoyment with Chris and Eddie of Pearl Jam singing together then Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog is an obvious one to listen to.

Yay! That was great! More Audioslave! So, to answer your question, Chris Cornell generally did write his own stuff, but I'm not sure how it worked in Audioslave. I've heard him say in an interview, that in Soundgarden, he would write songs, record a rough demo with himself playing all the music, and then just show them to the band, and if they liked it, they would add their own touches on it. I'm also pretty sure he lead everything behind Temple Of The Dog. I've explained what that is in another suggestion, and don't want to go into the full explanation, but it was a side project he organized, originally to do a tribute song to a friend that died, and was basically a mix of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. You still have to do their song "Hunger Strike" and hear Chris and Eddie together! He did end up going solo because I think he wanted to be able to do all the songs he wrote that Soundgarden didn't choose to do. He had one song out that i remember liking in that first solo period. Then he hooked up with Audioslave for a while, and then went back to doing his own thing again. There's a live cover of him doing "Nothing Compares To You", (a song that Prince wrote, but gave to Sinead O'Connor to do, which she had a big hit with, Sinead and Chris would be a great "who did it", after Prince's death, his family has released his version of it, but i don't think he ever wanted it released), that is absolutely beautiful! You have to do that too, please. He also did a song called "The Keeper" for the movie "Machine Gun Preacher" that i like a lot. I actually worked on that music video. I just don't know how it would've worked with Audioslave, which is basically him and the guys from Rage Against the Machine, who you also should do, because I feel like Tom Morello would want to be more creatively involved than Soundgarden had been, and I don't know if Chris would've been able to work in the same way with him.
Bisscute, I love your reactions but if your going to react to Audioslave and you already reacted to Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" then to complete the full circle you will need to react to Chris Cornell in the band "Temple of the Dog" and song should be "Say hello to Heaven" which is the first track on the album. I think the Temple of the dog album is better than both that you have already reacted to. I'm a huge Chris Cornell fan and to me that was his best work besides his solo work on the song book album.
That Audioslave debut album is one of the best full albums I've ever listened to. There is not a bad song on it. Also got to see them live in a club soon after it's release. They were awesome!
This song is super deep and i love racking my brain on why he wrote this what is the general message and why it hits so close to home in more than 1 way. I’d say its a stand alone masterpiece but his stand alone work that comes from him will always have that double meaning that can be accepted or taken further or simply enjoyed. Chris Will always be a legend who’s work I doubt will ever be forgotten. ❤
I feel so blessed that i got to see Chris on a solo tour he did in Europe before he passed away. Saw him in Aarhus in Denmark, and it was absolutely magical. He didn't hold back, and was in an awesome moo, giving it everything. The first show was actually cancelled, because he got sick, but he decided to change the date for the concert, so it was the last one on his tour. RIP Chris.
Sound Garden was the band Chris lead sang for in the 90s. In the early 2000's he hooked up with Rage Against the Machine minus lead singer Zack De Larocha, and they got together to form Audioslave. Don't sleep on lead guitarist Tom Morello. Tom and Chris both crafted a rock soundscape that pushed a lot of boundaries while feeling comfortable. And they crafted this whole sound without synths
" This goes into my 'I listen to everyday till I get bored and I know all the lyrics and I can sing it at 3am if you wake me up' " That is such a perfect reaction and pretty much my first reaction when I first heard it while going through the beginning of my worst break up 16 years ago. Such a great reaction. Keep up the great work
First, BEAUTIFUL reaction!!!🥰 I don't know how anyone couldn't love this song or Chris' voice though! lol!!! He's amazing!!!! Now, since you asked... yes Chris Cornell wrote the lyrics for all of his songs. FUN FACT: I saw an interview with Chris and he was asked about the inspiration behind it. Chris didn't share much on that, but what he did say was that he started writing the song when he was with Soundgarden (years before he formed Audioslave).... Anyway, it was a VERY personal song for him, and he went on to say that when he initially wrote it, he did not record it because he didn't feel he was in the right "head-space" to share it with the world. Then one day, many years later, while in a jam session with the guys of Audioslave this song popped into his head. He said the time felt right and he played it for them. They loved it, put their own unique instrumental touches on Chris's original melody (Tom Morello's little guitar solo pierces my soul!!!). Anyway, THIS was the result. It's breathtaking sonically and lyrically. It has touched, healed and united millions of people's lives!!! Your reaction was just another time where Chris helped unite people through his music!! Beautiful all the way around!!! Thanks for sharing your reaction. Perfect example of how music unites and heals like nothing else!!!💯💯💯 Peace and light...💞
There is another interview with the drummer for audioslave and he said to Chris that this song was awesome and inspiring. Chris said “well it’s about an old man at the end of his life all alone waiting to die “. Lol. Chris was awesome
Thanks for this reaction, and welcome to world of Sir Chris Cornell. Some songs to react : Outshined , Burden In My Hand , I Am The Highway , Billie Jean (cover M.J) , Hunger Strike ( Feat Eddie Veder) and Nothing Compares 2 U. R.I.P. Chris Cornell.
Audioslave and alternative/grunge rock were part of the soundtrack of my youth. I can't deny it's power or the place it has within my life. But now I see it all with different eyes and listen with different ears. These are songs of despair, heroin, depression, loneliness and suicide. By a freeway I confess I was lost in the pages Of a book full of death Reading how we'll die alone 5/18/2017 Chris Cornell died alone and by his own hand.
there is a phrase from a lyric of a band here in Brazil that says..., it's so strange the good ones die young... this was grunge...! I loved your reaction, and you are very nice and beautiful..🌹😉
I've felt so empty all my life, I'm "okay" now but I can't listen to this song without feeling Chris pain and it brings me back to those days I felt that way, can't help but cry and there's not a lot that makes me cry theses days, what a Masterpiece rest in peace brother...my heart goes out to you, I hope you made it there.
Give BOSTON's debut album a listen. It's the greatest debut of all time and one of the biggest selling albums in music history. "More than a feeling" is the opening song. I really thing you'll love it.
Audioslave is a rock band conformed by rock star... Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Tom Morello (guitar), Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk of Rage agains the machine. Tom Morello is a master in guitar... i love his style dirt and distorted... Chris Cornell are amazing in Audioslave and create a 3 perfect albun to remember him.
You have no idea how much this music has meant to me. To myself and my brother, thru some hard times. Losing this guy actually hurt. I haven't listened to this in so long because of the memories attached, so I'm typing this with watery eyes. Super happy to hear it thru someone else ears like for the first time.
Great reaction, great song! Everyone's musical tastes are different. You like what you like. Don't let anyone try to tell you what you should like. You are doing great just being yourself.
Tom Morello, also of "Rage Against The Machine", uses many different effects in his guitar work. He'll even unplug his guitar and put the cable right up against the strings to mimic a turntable scratching. A great and innovative guitarist. Chris Cornell...he's just Godlike.
R.I.P. Chris I remember sharing the shade in that desert,I wish I'd have known,I wish I'd had the words. 😊Thank you for your honesty and your reactions, this is the better band....subscribed!
You got it sister check out say hello to heaven a song Chris wrote for his buddy Andrew wood who tragically died of an overdose very emotional yes Chris writes a majority of his songs he has done some covers witch are amazing like nothing compares to you by prince RIP my friend .
Definitely one of my favorite songs. Now you simply must react to more from Audioslave....Cochise, Show me how to live. Both amazing in their own ways!!
Audioslave is one of my favorite bands(super bands). You must listen to more... Do the official videos first.. People always suggest live, unplugged or acoustic. I think first time listeners should always hear the song the way the world heard it first. Studio versions in their best quality that made the songs a hit in the first place. Videos also shows the bands personality and vision for the songs. These two Audioslave videos are great, check them out. - Show me How to Live - I am the Highway

His "Nothing Compares to You" cover is possibly one of the best covers Ever. You will love it.
Noted, ty ❤
I saw Audioslave, Like a Stone, Chris Cornell....I liked and subbed. Best voice to ever grace rock Rip we all miss you Chris.
His last performance of this by himself really shows his soul RIP Chris Cornell
Yes it is a guitar pedal helping, the Digitech Whammy pedal which takes the note up to a couple of octaves and you can control how much.
One of the greatest voices of the ages, you are missed Chris.
Thank you very much for this reaction video. I love your channel. I still love Chris Cornell. This song means a lot to me 🤘🤘🍀💕✌🙌😘🙋♂️
Bisscute, I love your reactions but if your going to react to Audioslave and you already reacted to Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" then to complete the full circle you will need to react to Chris Cornell in the band "Temple of the Dog" and song should be "Say hello to Heaven" which is the first track on the album.
The guitar solo by Tom morello is possibly the most unique one I've ever heard.
One of my favorite songs! Thank you for posting. Best reaction I've seen by far! 😊 Great channel.
My pleasure, thank you so much ❤
Oh man. You should do the original and then the live acoustic at AOL. It is so good 😊
Well ill only react to one version of a song, so if its this song but a different version its not likely but maybe ill check it out on my own time ❤
This song is super deep and i love racking my brain on why he wrote this what is the general message and why it hits so close to home in more than 1 way. I’d say its a stand alone masterpiece but his stand alone work that comes from him will always have that double meaning that can be accepted or taken further or simply enjoyed. Chris Will always be a legend who’s work I doubt will ever be forgotten. ❤
EStá música é um hino pra mim!
Clássico do rock 🤘🏼
Saw him live, and believe me, he sounds that good live as well. Truly incredible talent. Hope you are well
amazing ❤
How have people never heard of Depeche Mode or Audioslave etc etc
I feel so blessed that i got to see Chris on a solo tour he did in Europe before he passed away. Saw him in Aarhus in Denmark, and it was absolutely magical. He didn't hold back, and was in an awesome moo, giving it everything. The first show was actually cancelled, because he got sick, but he decided to change the date for the concert, so it was the last one on his tour. RIP Chris.
I love this song. I feel like a piece of me died when we lost Chris, and Chester.
I don't know what nation you're from, but I love your joyful energy in your reactions! God bless you young lady! ❤
Keep up the great work
haha thank you so much, glad you liked it ❤
First, BEAUTIFUL reaction!!!🥰 I don't know how anyone couldn't love this song or Chris' voice though!
Thank you so much ❤
There is another interview with the drummer for audioslave and he said to Chris that this song was awesome and inspiring. Chris said “well it’s about an old man at the end of his life all alone waiting to die “. Lol. Chris was awesome
Chris Cornell thank you for the music and memories! RIP friend and say hello !ND hug Chester for us. You're both Greatly loved and Missed!!!
The Technical instrument is TOM MORELLO❤️
Thanks for this reaction, and welcome to world of Sir Chris Cornell. Some songs to react : Outshined , Burden In My Hand , I Am The Highway , Billie Jean (cover M.J) , Hunger Strike ( Feat Eddie Veder) and Nothing Compares 2 U.
R.I.P. Chris Cornell.
Eddie Vedder(Pearl Jam) and Chris Cornell were friends. See them sing together on Temple of the Dog - "Hunger Strike"
Audioslave and alternative/grunge rock were part of the soundtrack of my youth. I can't deny it's power or the place it has within my life. But now I see it all with different eyes and listen with different ears. These are songs of despair, heroin, depression, loneliness and suicide.
By a freeway I confess
I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death
Reading how we'll die alone
5/18/2017 Chris Cornell died alone and by his own hand.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Type of song to play when you're driving
I love it ♥
Probably the best solo ever played. Rips through your soul.
Audioslave is best, no question.. I Am the Highway.. Heaven's Dead.. Getaway Car.. Be Yourself.. Best vocalist in history #Passion
Thanks for the suggestions ❤️
This girl is so sincere. Love her honesty.
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to.
there is a phrase from a lyric of a band here in Brazil that says..., it's so strange the good ones die young... this was grunge...! I loved your reaction, and you are very nice and beautiful..🌹😉
Thank you, Thank you, for recognizing and rewinding that guitar solo. It gets overshadowed by Chris's legendary voice
The man could sing. I'm 60yo, and listen to all types of music, bluegrass, jazz, r&b etc. and Cornell is one of the best vocalist I've ever heard.
A poet with the voice of a god! The music and lyrics on Audioslave's I Am The Highway are stunning. Miss him very much.
Give BOSTON's debut album a listen. It's the greatest debut of all time and one of the biggest selling albums in music history. "More than a feeling" is the opening song. I really thing you'll love it.
Hugs from Brazil, Bisscute. We love you!
R.I.P. Chris....this sweet girl keeping ur name ALIVE.....WE LOVE U CHRIS N U ARE MISSED
I agree. This is one of my favorites by him. What a voice.
Now hear it on the acoustic version, absolutely Beautiful. Tear jerker
Hopefully in the future ❤
R.I.P. Chris
I remember sharing the shade in that desert,I wish I'd have known,I wish I'd had the words.
😊Thank you for your honesty and your reactions, this is the better band....subscribed!
i grew up in the 80s,the 80s and early 90s had a sound that touched the soul. the newer bands today need to try to tap into what the older bands did.
Love seeing new people being introduced to Cornell. His solo shit is amazing as well. Cheers!
RIP 🙏🏻 Chris!
The One who knew too much
The one taken before his due time.
The one who tried to stand for his fellow humanity!
One of the best male vocalists of all time.
This song came out when I was in high school 20 years ago and to this day I never tire of listening to it 🤘🏻
Show Me How to Live is another incredible Audioslave song. Definitely recommend checking out more of their songs.
