"We belong together," was a live ad-lib that Eddie was feeling in the moment. That phrase is not in the studio version. I believe this particular live performance really evokes more emotion than the original, because we can see his facial expressions and the breaking of his voice. It still brings me to tears because I can relate to his pain but could never put it into words so eloquently as he does.

I'm not sure if you are aware but after the passing of Chris Cornell, a very close friend of Eddie, he performed Black at the tribute concert for Chris. Eddie ad-libs again at the end and it's the most heart breaking thing I've ever seen on stage. Eddie had all he could do to finish the song with the help of the crowd. If there's anything worse than loosing a girl, it's losing a best friend. A brother. You need to see it to understand his pain and appreciate it. When he cries "come back, come back", I just lose it. Amazing...

I've always wondered if him dropping the "I know she gave me all that she wore" line and replacing it with the later line "How quick the sun can drop away" line and repeating it again later in its proper place was a conscious decision or if he just lost his place in the lyrics.

This song is actually really great for young people to listen to and delve into the backstory of as it can be a great life lesson in perspective.
Eddie (Vedder - the singer) and the lady he is singing about actually did get back together and even got married.
But after 6 years they divorced and 10 years later he married his current wife with whom he has 2 kids, a wonderful life he is extremely lucky and self-admittedly overjoyed to have and now when he sings this song live he changes the lyric to “we DIDNT belong together”.
The lesson: don’t let sadness and disappointment convince you that your future is destroyed.
You have no idea what the future holds and what seems like the be all and end all now can easily turn out to be anything but.
You never know when the best is actually ahead of you.

UNPLUGGED was the best thing to ever come from MTV, back when they actually played music. To truly appreciate a bands talent, you need to hear them 'unplugged'. I highly recommend QUEENSRYCHE's Unplugged session, especially the songs 'Silent Lucidity', 'Anybody Listening', 'Della Brown', 'I Will Remember'. Geoff Tate's voice back then was amazing, and the acoustic guitars will give you chills.

This is a very, very good introduction to Pearl Jam’s music and songs. The studio version is also emotionally powerful, but here he poured it on even thicker. His name is Eddie Vedder, and he helped found Pearl Jam in Seattle, Washington. Eddie’s voice type/vocal range is baritone; Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley are other well-known baritones. Pearl Jam is the only Seattle band that never broke up or lost members due to substance abuse and other personal demons.

Pearl Jam is an amazing rabbit hole to fall into. One of the premier Grunge bands of the time out of Seattle, singer Eddie Veddar is the only remaining front men from those popular bands.
This is a very tamed performance because of the Unplugged (acoustics) setting of this MTV show which was also popular in the 90s. Pearl Jam live shows are extremely energetic, entertaining and at times crazy in the fact that Eddie tends to be reckless in his physical stage antics, something you will see in their live videos later.

OMG jealousy is ugly but I'm a little ugly cause I want to see them so bad. 12! that's amazing, I'm happy for you to be honest. I'm in Norway and they are playing in Denmark in about a week and every single day I look at plane ticket prices and re-sale concert tickets as well. Trying to decide if it's worth paying about the same amount as one month's rent for a few hours.. I won't have an apartment next month anyway though lol so IDK

Love this reaction the best for this song and this version . I grew up in the 90s and It's my favorite song of all time. This was recorded on MTV in 92. And the singer is Eddie Vedder. He puts his soul into his songs and you definitely can see it and hear it in his voice. Thank you for this reaction ❤️

Pearl Jam is the best live! They're also one of the most gracious bands I've come across. I am from Seattle and when I was at the University of Washington in the early 90's I had the opportunity to work security at concerts. Pearl Jam, in smaller venue in Tacoma, was one of these such occurrences. When the concert was "officially over" they went into an unplanned and unknown to the audience concert. They closed the doors to the venue and told security to not allow re-entry. Then they proceeded to do a 3 hour jam session for the remaining audience. They played until about 2 AM and just gave us all the best show of our lives.

The studio version of this was on a mixtape my sister made me when I was 10 - the line 'why can't it be..why can't it be mine?' shook me ti my core even then.
This live version somehow tops that.

The Singer, Eddie Vedder, said the song is about First Relationships and how they mostly don't last. It's about letting go and grow.
That "sound" you mention is probably the Resonator Guitar. These guitars have a very distinctive sound.
