- UPDATE: the 4K version of this analysis is here - • [4K] Resident Evil 2 R...
Sadly UA-cam's 4K encoder went down yesterday across the site, but today it kicked into gear. A massive sorry for the wait on this one!
Capcom's classic gets the full remake treatment courtesy of its RE Engine. It adapts to all consoles, though the enhanced PS4 Pro and Xbox One X models are spoilt with a tighter lock at 60fps, and other extras. Tom and John discuss!

For those who don't want to see the video for spoiler:
Visuals:
- Base Consoles: 1080p native on PS4, XBO is also 1080p but blurrier. Signs of reconstruction to 1080p on XBO.
- PS4 Pro 1620p but shows more visible reconstruction artifacts (similar to XBO) on hair etc immediately after a scene change.
- PS4 Pro version does appear slightly sharper, but the X version looks 'cleaner', doesn't have the amount of specular sheen/aliasing the Pro shows.
- The makeup is exactly the same as the 1 shot demo, and in turn exactly the same as RE7's Pro/XBX versions.
- Pixel count is the same on both, no mentions of dynamic scaling on either.
- Textures and geometry are the same on all 4 console versions.
- Motion blur is higher quality on Pro/XBX compared to base.
- SSR are more dithered on the PS4/Pro compared to XBO/XBX.
- Disabling Film Grain does 'improve' the image quality very slightly but it's not really a notable difference.
- XBX has higher quality shadows and AO compared to XBO (no comment on how it compared to PS4 family)
- The motion blur in the game is per-object, not based on camera.
Performance:
- All consoles target 60 FPS, Pro has more drops but they don't linger long enough.
- In some tested areas, XBX dropped frames where Pro did not (notable in cut-scenes).
- XBX has generally higher avg frame rate.
- Base consoles have a lot of drops, from 40's to 50's. PS4 fares better than XBO.
- Base consoles would have been much better with a 30 FPS cap.
Nothing about the HDR implementation?
@@symphony137 don't think this game do HDR.....
Thank you, also nice to know you can disable film grain.
Thank you so much for posting this! I didn't want to watch any spoilers for the game in the video :)
@@will3641 it was in the demo bro.
I was running this game at 40 fps at ultra and i was wondering why it was bad. And then realize i was running at 4k. Amazing performance that I did not expect.
For me 40fps lock is really unstable almost unplayable to me.. Because of the uneven of the frames.. Tbh honest i prefer 30 and 60 fps locked, 40fps locked smooth for me is really weird and distracting its like your playing unlocked fps
@@gran761 Well I play at 1440p so getting up to 40 fps at 4k is pretty good Considering how good the graphics were
@@gran761Should see Ragnarok and Rift Apart at 40 fps then
i love DF....the best youtube channel about gaming tech analysis
Already 5 years! How time flies by so quickly!?
Microsoft single handedly found a way to be in first and last place at the same time lol
The brief "reconstruction artifacts" on hair on Pro is actually lower precision density as FP16 (RPM) is being used for performance savings.
Great vid guys. RE2: Remake on the Pro n X are marginally very close so good for either owners of them systems. A 30fps option across the board would have been a neat little option for all Console owners. I only have a PS4 Slim so if looks n runs ok then that is fine by me.
Congrats on 700k subs!

So glad I ended up getting this on the PC. Almost got the PS4 pro one to keep it OG with PlayStation, but holy shit, this game maxed out in 1440P in 144hz with Gsync has to be one of the most beautiful looking gaming experiences i've ever had.
bakerXderek nah I'll take 1620p(4k with other games) with HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG on my 55 inch 2018 Vizio P series with FALD and OLED qualty blacks and 10 bit color processor and wide color gamut thank you.

@John My rigs over 2 years old and still pumping out power thankfully lol. Just an i7 6800k, ASUS strix GTX1080, 32gb ddr4.
Resident Evil looks awesome. I have nostalgic memories on this title. Who dont have ?
Another good job DF ! Best regards !
What's amazing to me is how good these AAA games tend to look on the base consoles at 1080p. God of War, RDR 2, RE2... these games all look super-great even on the old consoles (and yes, even at 900p in some cases on the One)
@digitalfoundry I was hoping u would talk about the HDR implementation since u mentioned it in your previous re2 video. It looks kinda washed out on my calibrated LG C8 OLED here so I switched it off for now.
Daniel R yeah I got a C7 and the HDR implementation is disappointing. I’m tired of all these big games I look forward to like Nier, RDR2, and this just to be screwed out of the HDR compartment. Still looks great in SDR, but proper HDR would make it amazing!
The reach for the moon engine is just amazing.
Wow. As I was finishing the last video that was announcing this one I got the notification that this was uploaded! 😂
Welcome back Tom!
Kind of sad that the amazing use of Dolby Atmos in the One X version isn't touched on at all. This game makes the best use of it yet, and fill the room with sound.
Hmmm, very interesting.
No one seems to care about proper Surround Sound Implementation in Games.
Most gamers dont own true surround systems, they just use headphones, i personally have a Sony HTZF9 soundbar with wireless rear speakers and the sound is amazing especially with this title.
Too bad turning on Dolby Atmos on One X and Series X causes audio delay
For all consoles, options would be cool. Dynamic Res @60FPS , or Fixed Res @30FPS
I heard sometime ago that it would offer that option going forward.
Thanks guy! glad to see the 60 Target continues
That original RE2 Credits song in the background, byootiful.
Lets all agree....
That RE engine is a much better engine than the creation engine of bethesda
SUPER AGREED and Capcom is a lazy dev as well lol
The RE Engine is also much newer. lol

The circlejerk continues.
Could it be the One X is using TAA + FXAA and that is what is making the image softer?
Now this is what we've been waiting for!
Thanks for the video DF! Do you think that is possible a good port to nintendo switch?
Can I be honest? These videos are awesome and seeing the comparisons is interesting as hell but I do not notice 90% of this stuff when playing games
a comparison without 4k option ;) nice job
Great stuff guys. Thx to your analysis I made an informed desicion and bought this for PC :) seems the best version.
PC most times will be the premier experience
Do you think the softer look of the Xbox One X version could be due to a more aggressive anti aliasing setting compared to the one used (or lack of) on the PS4 Pro? I did notice some stair stepping in one scene from your video when Claire was running next to the burning bus in Racoon City right before she got to police station metal gate. I could be wrong though.
They don’t care
Haven't seen any 4kHD uploads in a while :(
Life is tough.
Probably getting tired of them taking so long to render. I know DF apologize for the 4K resolution not always being up right away but I think we all understand that they take time to upload.
Lots of youtubers have been complaining that 4k60 videos get stuck processing for ever and never even make it past 360p. That's why they are uploading in 4k30 or 1080p60 although IMO 1440p60 would be a good middle ground.
Sweet!! - gotta a long work day ahead, sucks.
Good luck with that!
Tim Dumoulin amen brother. Nothing worse than a grinding work day to trudge through before getting to a game.
@@XBX1MASTER That makes the game even more worthwhile to play at the end of the day.
I'm with you man. The hours are moving pretty slow today...
@@kiefchief1 where u work?
Are there any difference in performance for the ps4 pro if the resolution is fixed at 1080p and supersampling turned off for RE2?
Great video guys
Now I am living in it King seconds into your video and you talkin about how kind of skipped a little on your Xbox one X you know I'm thinking and maybe your copy or your version because on my Xbox one X 1tb everything was perfect
All this fanboyism is poison, just play it on the damn console you own. Everyone wins cause we get the chance to play this amazing game.
What if you own all...like me?
@Caffeinated Critic and you can just show middle finger to those decisions btw.
Fanboyism aside, there are factually wrong purchase decisions.
@Caffeinated Critic More than half, even though it's getting little better these days.
Back in the day before you were born we had console wars and everybody understood it was fun....banter. Now everyone's got their ass in their hands over everything. Everything is so god damn offensive these days 😂
Glad this is getting an upgrade for current gen systems. The poor quality of screen space reflections mentioned at 7:45 are REALLY distracting on PS4/PS4pro, especially because you're in the police station hub so often.
SUGGESTION : when displaying the Four Consoles output for side by side comparison, divide the screen in four quaters, as opposed to four vertical strips.
have both base consoles atop one another (left) and both high end consoles on the right.
Sony fanboys are toxic, xbots are salty blah blah blah. Just play the damn game and have a good time.

Aren't you so original?
So what's the point of being a fanboy then?
Also, sony fanboys are salty by the way they handle little things

xbox fans playing 40 fps is this a good time ?
I fell in love with Ada and Claire in this remake.
Lotus Prince just released about the Preview Disc for Resident Evil 2! Hire this man!
2:57 jittered temporal AA for alpha to coverage surfaces will do that, doesn't indicated reconstruction - but I would be surprised if reconstruction isn't being used as checkerboard rendering is the current in-thing to do and I believe RE7 had that. Reconstruct the off pixels for the current frame from their previous frame depth and motion info - only render to the on pixels.
Why don't you guys every talk about sound?? I have a sweet 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos setup. I'd like to hear what you think about the sound.
If the game can't reach 60 why not include a 30fps cap option... 40 ish FPS is unplayable to me and doesn't make much sense
I too love how zombies behave with each bullet hitting them, ripping bits of flesh off as they continue to lumber towards you, it's cool
I own the game on PS4 Pro and am playing on a 4K/HDR tv. If I set my PS4 Pro to output to 1080p will the experience be smoother or near locked to 60fps?
Would love to see a 30fps locked mode on the pro/x, just to see if we can squeeze out native 4K, or better SSR maybe? I would still ultimately prefer 60fps, no doubt.
It's nice it runs well on the "mid-gen" consoles, but they did a shoddy job for the majority of console owners.
Sorry, but why don't you call them out on that more clearly? Yes, the game looks good, but as is, they really should have cut the visuals down more on the base consoles to at least come close to locking 60 fps. I'm going to play this on PC, but honestly, you've been too positive on this one, IMO.
the game runs well on base consoles and runs at should be on pro and x
@@SonGoku-ep4wj it doesn't. Im playing this at the moment with a base ps4 and there is frame rate dips. Still haven't got that far enough to impact gunplay.
@@chicle8727 I agree with you tbh. Btw im on just a regular Xbox one, and while it doesn’t impact gunplay, I’ve noticed that the body damage for the zombies can look weird when it shows all the pinkish parts of the gore and whatnot. Idk. Oh and there is another problem where if i shoot a zombie at a distance, it’ll look like their animation stagger will go frame by frame almost if that makes any sense.
I'm on XBX and I have some serious issues with SSR. Almost every reflecting surface shows dithering, sometimes it's even visible on non-reflecting surfaces. Totally bugs me. Can this be resolved with lower brightness? I'm not sure I calibrated my HDR correctly.
Bro’s still waiting for an answer 💀
What would you guys say the average FPS is on base PS4? Somewhere around 45? Looking forward to playing it in any case!
Bro’s still waiting for an answer 💀
The February patch for this game made performance improvements and pretty much made PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions identical in performance.
You guys should really get into the habit of updating your “analysis” for games.
jesus I only got 4 hours sleep last night, resident evil 2 is the bomb
I can say that, unfortunately, the PC version after release still has the effect where "everything" seems to move in 30fps when you are getting close to enemies, altough my settings are locked to 60. Also the PC seems kind of stuttery even when locked to 60 its just "feels" stuttery... what do you guys say?
Definitely interested in checking out my Pro vs my RX570. My pc isn't amazing though the SSD and more options do usually end up with me sticking to my pc.
How about the Soulja console’s performance?! Oh my gah! 😂🤣😂🤣
Just in time! I’m heading to a game store to get my copy of RE2!
I'll be getting mine in a few hours, hope there isn't too large of a day one update
If u have base console n its PS4 then ur the winner. If u have Pro then ur still the winner
Even though I have the XOne X, I got it for PS4 Pro.
@@asifmetal666 Well If you have the X, get it for the X, or if you have a gaming PC, get it for the PC, if you have neither get it for either of the PS4 systems.
If you have a Pro and an X then you should get it for the X as all multiplatform games are better on the X.
I HAVE PLAYED THE BASE PS4 VERSION DAY1. LOOKS GREAT AND IS OVERALL PRETTY SMOOTH.
I wonder if Capcom actually optimized for the Pro or even more for the X? I do agree that the game should have a 30 FPS cap for the base consoles, so that performance is consistent. We are in a weird place with the console generations. I think it's going to be interesting to see when the next gen consoles come out next year how developers are going to release games across the last gen, iterative, and next gen. I'm sure it will be similar to PC. Console makers will most likely have streaming for people who want to play on the last gen consoles with the newest graphics. I think the marketing to the more casual console game owners is going to be key.
The reason the one x appears blurry is the type of post process AA it uses. Ps4 pro has bad aliasing in places. If you play on pc and turn AA off it looks very similar to the pro. But turn on the AA and the soft blurry look is the same as the one x.
The only AA that is blurry is FXAA so i'm glad on pc i can elect to not have that nasty form of AA on my game and by extension if the pro doesnt have FXAA it automatically wins the looks department.
Sony pay capcom to not max out the xbox one x. You'll obviously say I full of shit but they do
azureskies01 not true. Temporal and other post processing AA also blur the image. It still looks cleaner than the pro. The pro has horrendous reflections, aliasing, and shimmering. But it looks sharper.
@@josephhooks1292 trust me they have been doing this since the ps2 days. Bad bullying company Sony. Capcom jumped ship for a while back in early 2000
I find whilst playing on X that in the distance of the on screen player there are some very odd reflections/shadows/shimmering low res. It's rough inside the well lit areas. It's an odd thing. Res 7 never had this.
HDR causes issues too. It's a bit shitty on X.... not seen the game on Pro.
Had some pretty rough slowdown on X on a couple of scenes...
I beat the game this morning. Anychance you could talk a bit more about the screen space reflection on the PS4 Pro? Towards the end of the game in the Lab area it looks a complete mess, to the point I thought it was my TV settings. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I thought it was brilliant.
you have your brightness up quite high, i had it set so you cant see anything outside of the touch beam. like how it tell's you to set it to when you first boot it up
Bought this for my PC. GTX1080 i7-7820. Runs at 1440p at 90 FPS without trying. Personally I played it at 1080/60 zero frame drops or issues
Listen Everybody! I played 30 minutes into the base PS4 game and didn’t notice one frame drop. I was more concerned with ammo reserved and equipment Enjoying the game just fine.
Where's that 4k upload?!
Would you able to tell ne how to switch between the 4kmode and high framerate mode on the Xbox one x please? I cant find it anywhere

I really dont have anything to do in game... Wish it had a randomizer
Something's off with your capture footage today. Too many compression artifacts at 720p
If I want to play on a 1440p 27" pc monitor but can only get ps4 1080p version ... would 1080p look really bad on 1440p monitor or should I get steam version and lower a details to stay at 1440p?
Xbox One X Version best choose here!
@Salamence 1 so whats the point in fanboys if you think they're disgusting
So between this and Ace Combat 7 I'm learning. Don't get Japanese developed games on 1X over Pro despite the blatant hardware differences.
Never trust the Asian nationalism when it comes to gaming they don't get my money
Why not just buy both
This is better on Xbox One X, it just isn't as much of an improvement over PS4 Pro as it should be
Adam Davis I was just thinking the exact same thing today as I’ve just purchased both games. Ace Combat being the more obvious example.
I think in this particular case Xbox One X is still a better choice. But you're 100% right about Ace Combat 7, that was just outright neglect.
Incredibly well optimised on the X running at 3k locked to 60 with RX 580 graphics level my Vega 56 can’t even do native 4K at console settings on the excellent PC port.
Hi John, hope you're feeling well m8. Ignore the negative comments they don't reflect the majority of decent people you meet face to face. Hope things pick up soon. You're a great bloke and the work you do on DF is first class. All the best.
Notice how Japanese companies games don't take the initiative to fully use the Xboxes true power. Seems incredibly stupid that they cant stand seeing a better version on a foreigners console.
They do it intentionally Xbox One X is Superior Hardware for running game code it would look the best always
@Lily Flower though rude he was not lying the devs were lazy on this one just look at rdr2
sonys videogame part is not japanese anymore so where is the nintendo version of this game?
its to weak to run it
This is pretty good, but yeah it's something I've noticed, especially from Namco 1080P on XB1X in Ace Combat. 1440P on XB1X in Soul Caliber was a bit of a joke as well. Other than Namco I think most Japanese developers do a good job.
Does anyone elses PRO go into absolute fan takeoff mode from game start? It’s driving me insane, regardless of output settings 1080, HDR, 4K whatever.. its just infuriatingly loud no matter what I do to try and resolve. As soon as i go to examine an item it goes quiet.. otherwise its loud throughout. Poor optimisation?
PS4 Pros are notorious for being loud under duress. If I’m not mistaken, Sony cheaped out on the heat sink, so the fans have to work extra hard to keep the system cool.
Hey I am watching this review that you guys are doing in on my TV and everything it looks great although I would have to say the PS4 may appear to be a little darker from what I'm watching of your show I got the resident evil 2 remake for my PS4 pro & Xbox one X 1tb
I’m playing this on the X Box One X, I’m loving this game so far! I think most people will enjoy no matter their platform even if they’re On a base console.
No 4k30fps option on Xbox one x??
1620p at 60fps is better anyways.
Maybe it coming soon to new patch

Pixel GeeK yes it is
Yes there is HDR but all data suggests playing in SDR. HDR is broken on this one.

Hdr is poorly implemented here. You know its broken when HDR implementation is better on PC than on consoles
They both are HDR10@@ryanxgames5988
Who would be the best UA-cam channel for HDR performance?
Do the enemies render at half framerate in the full game like in the demo?
I think base consoles should've been locked to 30 fps. Better to have a stable 30 than an unlocked mess. I also think the developers don't really care now. X performance is great.
Consoles should give people that options or at least it should've been included in the Game option if that is possible
just put an option on menu and everyone is happy, bioshock style.
shouldn't, people need to grow up and stop acting like girls.
I've finished this game on the base PS4 and it was fantastic, I didn't notice any issues that bothered me.
Does resident Evil 2 remake have 30fps mode on base ps4? Because frame rate are all over the place mostly in mid 40's which causes lots of stuttering..
@@silentassasin4202 Nope. There's only unlocked frame that you can see in this video but it is good anyway, the gameplay is very enjoyable. And let me tell you one thing, after all these years of blabbing....PS4 Pro is just a well packed scam. Extra money for little improvements that cant justify a switch from the base model. Expecially today, it cost almost like PS5.
@@andreatoppi5627 I am not a gamer who wants 60 or 120 fps but what I want is consistency. 30 fps locked is butter smooth experience for me. You are correct I would say ps4 pro is not needed for 95% of the games. But there are few exceptions for example re2 remake re village. I tried re village demo on ps4 base and the stuttering was so insane that I did not purchase the game. While on ps4 pro u can put resolution to 1080 p and enjoy near constant 60 fps same is true with re2 remake.
Kill zone shadow fall which is still a graphics master piece also runs at variable 60 fps. Frame rates are between 40 to 60 fps but it feels so smooth I don't get that stuttering feeling. But re2 remake and re village running at same unlocked fps like killzone shadow fall feels terrible to play for some reason.
They all look good. Some blur on lower end. But a damn good looking game!
Here's a test to try. Play the game at 720p to see performs change at all on base units?

The pro version I played looks practically the same as the one x version on my ultra 4k tv. The performance on both felt very smooth 2 play & I personally didn't notice any lag or frame drops on either version that impacted gameplay. The game runs solid on both pro /one x & owners of either console version will be both impressed by the amazing visuals & solid performance of the RE Engine. Game's a masterpiece so buy it & enjoy. Hope Capcom bring us RE 3 & Code VERONICA next XD

@@eltadashi1 Honestly, I have a shitty system. With an old GTX 750, not even the Ti version. I'm gonna upgrade soon, but I gave the demo a try with that card and while I needed to play it on Interlaced rendering which definitely showed, I could do it at 1080p and with some effects on and it was absolutely playable! Same with RE7. RE engine is amazing! Great optimization, nice visuals. Can't wait to see it with a better graphics card. Great job Capcom!
Digital Foundry ihr seid die Besten.
@Electric Thunder Tiger VII Bist du denn von DF? 😄
For HDR, if your TV has the option try adjusting your black levels slightly. The highlights are there unlike with Red Dead 2 but the blacks are a little washed out. With adjusted blacks the HDR now looks gorgeous on my set. There's also some colour grading going on. Blacks in the police station appear grey/blue but in later sections they don't.Don't adjust the brightness in game though. It lowers the peak brightness levels of the HDR.
SuperRocketKnight 😢I don’t want to adjust it just for this game though. It works on every other game for me so I would constantly be going back and forth.
Then there's only one other option available to you. You need to buy a second 4k HDR TV.
SuperRocketKnight I actually just tried this and wow, it actually worked! At first the blacks were elevated with my brightness at 50 in my TV, but by lowering it to 44 it was perfect! I get amazing blacks with bright highlight details! Definitely shouldn’t have knocked it until I tried it. Makes HDR very playable!
I ALWAYS turn off film grain! It totally ruins any image to my eyes.
Same. I really don't appreciate it at all.
Its really fkn stupid.
PS4 Pro Forever 💕
But is the PC DX12 stutter from the demo still there?
With the 'Film Grain' option, it's just a toggle ON/OFF, I think they should've added an intensity slider for film grain under the toggle option. (for consoles at least. Idk if the PC version already has an intensity slider, as I only have the PS4/Pro version atm.)
it's on/off….so, off, for me
The RE Engine is incredible. Can't wait to load up the Xbox 1X
I wished there were two options like Hitman. One with locked 30 fps and the other one unlocked.
There is an unlocked and native 4K version, get a PC.
Infamous also has that options. Interesting enough, if you force 1080p setting on display setting on PS menu and go back to the game with unlocked FPS, the game reaches around 50-60FPS. It's a nice addition indeed.
True
@@hkoizumi3134 It is the default version, but wished there was a locked 30 too.
H Koizumi Cheers thought had to force it through PS4 Pro menu. Would have been nice of them to put it in the game options though.

That's not to mention if you have Dolby Atmos! Man it's insane with that bump in Audio.
