Wow, this is something special. John Linneman takes a good, long look at the brilliant new remake, analysing the game's RE engine technology and breaking down how Capcom has actually remade and remixed the game for modern audiences.

John and the word "then" popping up in a random place in the sentence. :(
interesting huh
Man I use this word a LOT
and so many people I say it around have no idea what it means 😂
Just imagining being back in the 90s as a kid and some time traveler showing me this remake when I just finished playing the original, gives me shivers.
I would be complaining about the poor implementation of reflections and go back to my superior 1998 game **gritts teeth**
I remember thinking "how is this even possible" when I first played Dreamcast, so seeing this game in the 90s would've sent me to the mental ward
I’d have shit a brick and died outright
This is a tech analysis not a review. Want to thank the comments for the spoiler warning, wont be watching it till I've completed the game
Why are people complaining about spoilers? It's a remake of a 1998 game. The story is already out in the world since that time. So don't moan about spoilers from something that has been spoiled in the last 20 years...
He did say he was pointing out design changes early in the video. Story tends to be included in a games design
@@sausje no, Capcom even said its changed. Anyway like many others, I didn't play the first one and know nothing of the story so yeh... dont want it ruining
@@sausje Because maybe not everyone has played the original, you melon?
@@Abby_Sciuto lol wtf you called him a melon ?
14:24 THAT BURGER LOOKS SO REALISTIC AND GOOD!
whats the name of the song at the beginning? I know its a resident evil song but forgot what game its from and what its called specifically
I'm searchin trough comments too :)
These comments are filled with incredible assholery, John you did a good job and you need not worry what these cretins think. Internet anonymity has turned people into monsters.
Honestly I considered the RE1 remake to be the benchmark of how game developers should approach remakes and Capcom just set a new benchmark in that category basically outdoing themselves :D
Warning ⚠️ SPOILERS EVERY WHERE ON THIS VIDEO!! ⚠️ watch with caution or rather don’t watch at all lol 😂
you're a bit late, title has already changed to include a Spoiler tag.
Thanks for informing...
For anyone that is reading through the comments during the first minute.
Keep in mind that they are going to show a SPOILER on the intro and show how much is changed compared to the original, in my opinion is making me want to play the game even more, thou it can be seen as a spoiler to some.
Please keep this in mind and have a nice day!
I'm glad I checked the comments beforehand
Thanks John and the DF team, I was waiting for this one!
I was looking forward to seeing this analysis, the only one you can trust!
wheres the tech analysis?

Fanboy
@@the_xenturion Yep.
The video title clearly says SPOILERS but those epic gamers just have to go in before playing the game and then blame the creator. This is a great video and please don't be bother with those comments.
You really do great work, John! I can tell the frustrations of the internet, among other things are really under your skin lately. Your videos are among the most professional that I watch on UA-cam. You are great at what you do and there are an incredible amount of people that really enjoy your content. Don’t let the salty comments and tweets ruin your day. Life is too short to sweat that kind of stuff. Thanks for this video, and I look forward to what is next!
You guys call this a tech analysis, but really its just a comparison between the PSX original and the remake.
What about the part where he described the new audio system. HDR, broken brightness scale, the grainy SSR the imperfect headlight reflections, or the way hair is rendered.
Or the specifics on Leon and Claire's models? And the trucker's beard?
@@youtubesuresuckscock Says the guy who cant even comprehend basic grammar
Master review technique for this guy: looking rendering and sound glitches which I could never see or hear on rewatching or re-watching a dozen times in normal gameplay environment. Great staffer.
Wheres the actual tech analysis? This seems more like game design comparison.
Next part.
He mostly talked about the game engine: lighting, reflections, audio, but also difference between this game and original (differences in rendering, characters...) that's why they can call it tech analysis.
There is more to a tech analysis than just frame rate and resolution you know?
He made both by comparing to the original.
Oh you want frame rate comparison..? That might be on the next video. Except nothing else is missing on this video.
15:07 When he showed the doors, I heard the sound of the locks in my head. And I haven't played RE2 in years.
Sorry if I'm being too blunt, John. But this doesn't seem to be a proper tech analysis to me. I wanted to give this video a like but I just couldn't help thinking that you've put far too much of a magnitude in naming the difference between this and the 1998 original. But to be frank, spoilers are fine for me, as I believe the majority of the design differences have been shown in the demo already.
But the key issue is that you spent far too little time analyzing the game from a technological perspective. Among all the things talked of, the one that impresses me the most is the HDR implementation and blackness problems.
I think this has been a bad trend in Digital Foundry's productions overall, and this is why I appreciate Alex's works the most, since he really spends a lot of time researching how an engine behaves for a game, what artifacts are there that could have been improved, and what as well as whatnot in combination creates the most satisfying visual outcome etc.
But don't get me wrong. I really respect you as a pioneering figure in this field. Many of your episodes are among my favourite YT videos of all time. And I'm no match when it comes to the understanding of video gaming techs and hence, I'm in no position to judge arrogantly. It is just that if I may put forward a piece of advice, I hope you might take more time and share with us what you find interesting.
*"his luscious hair bounces realistically as he moves"*
>hair begins twitching
Nice transition at the start with Leon shooting, spot on.
It just works
Do you even watch the video?
@@ryanm7723 no, he doesn't, he's also pretty annoying, his comment has nothing to do with the video or the game
Remember the more you buy more you save.
@@theostheodorescu1825 he's probably a bot.
@@danny1884 He's not a bot. He just has a lot time on his hands.
A bit too many story details and gameplay spoilers here...
Things like telling us we can take out the zombies in an area if we want, but we shouldn't, or that Kendo is going to "not last long" don't belong in a tech analysis video for an unreleased game.
This is the first DF video I've turned off.
Your talking about a remake of a 20 year old game, they are expecting you to have played or at least know about the original.
@@CreativeWM_Personal Why? Why on earth would they POSSIBLY "expect" that?? Resident Evil 2 sold roughly 7 million copies over time. There are 7.53 Billion people in the world.
So only 0.09%, or less than *one tenth of one percent* of the population ever owned the original game. The law of averages tells us that a fair number of the people who did, are now dead. Also, how many millions and millions of adults exist now who were either too young to play the original or *weren't even born yet?*
Of course, you don't _really_ believe it's a smart move to assume that everyone has played the 20 year old original, do you? No. You're just one of those contrarian individuals who likes to argue with everyone who comments on anything online.

@@bluegollum They didn't spoil everything just the begining part, I mean they barely showed much of the ending areas and we already knew about the Giant Croc making the cut.
@Melvin Frazier It's still a 20 year old game, people have had 20 years to know the plot and secrets contained in it through a varity of different mediums. You cannot truly know the final number of people who know about the spoilers, let's use Star Wars as an example everyone knows who Darth Vader is to the point that clich'e becomes a joke in other stories.
To top it off my rule with spoilers is if it's over 10 years old then I can spoiler it freely, also you should go into these kinds of videos expecting spoilers of some kind. Kinda like their look into Spiderman last year, as soon as I saw Doc Oct I knew he'd be involved in the story despite not being in the promotional trailers prior to lanuch.
For the folks complaining about spoilers, if you guys really wanted to play the game unspoiled then mistake number one was watching videos of it on the internet. I really don't see the issue here. Play the game and then come back and watch the video. If including "spoilers" along the way ultimately make a better and more complete video, and Digital Foundry's decision to include those absolutely was the right direction to take. It's the same as reading or watching movie reviews before going and seeing the movie. It ultimately is going to spoil the movie some.
Edit -- To be fair, the video upload date may have been better suited for a few days post-release. But it makes it no less of a great video.
Congratulation on the amazing analysis. Amazing quality as usual, thanks!!
Another excellent analysis John.
Damn I was expecting analysis of the ps4 and xbox but it filled with 27 minutes of spoilers then tell you go check out the other video for specs
At least give us a month before you spoil everything frame by frame
a week is far more realistic than a month.
They already discussed the differences in the demo. It's the same here.
@@pegasusdrive12 the only differences that the video include the intro (up to the police station) and mid-late game minor spoilers (Remake-specific) in some footages.
UPDATE: looks like they added a spoiler tag on the title and description.
re2 has been out for 20 years, nothing they show are spoilers.
@@pegasusdrive12 they said that there are hoping for changes for the final releases. It also sounds like they are changes since they are making a new video for that.
Informative video, as always.
Been looking forward to this analysis :)
John!! Why don't DF do any HDR videos anymore? You're meant to be doing cutting edge analysis but you're missing out one of the biggest advances in recent times. Please bring them back.
What is HRD?
@@Phil_529 High range dynamic 😂

Another great video John
That jump cut from '98 Leon shooting the head of a '19 zombie synched up to "that day is today" was masterful.
Well done.
I really wish you guys would upload these in 4K, to combat UA-cam's awful video compression. At 1080p, the quilt effect is horrible. Looks like a freakin' QuickTime video from 1996.
They do upload them in 4K..... On Patreon.
TIME TO WATCH THIS MASTERPIECE OF A VIDEO.... on my iPhone 6s
Been waiting for this one thanks john and friends!
As someone suffering from arachnophobia I'm actually glad the spiders are gone. Normally I would be pissed but in this case, I'm happy they did this.
I'm so glad I found this channel. Knowing all the technical stuff makes you appreciate the games even more. Good stuff
DF needs to start doing HDR analysis as well.
@@WhiteHawk77 if it's faked i'm not buying it. not going to support any more devs that do this. it's insulting.
@@WhiteHawk77 Why would this be fake HDR? RE7 did HDR fine years ago from what I remember.
100%
@@WhiteHawk77 The HDR seems to look good on my LG HDR monitor. Are you sure you have everything configured properly?
@@AlecRozsa I don't think it's fake, my LG HDR monitor shows it switches to HDR mode and looks very good.

I'll watch this after I beat this masterpiece of game design. Friggen love this and so glad yall making videos on it! Start a new game and walk in and out of rain at gas station by the pumps...simply incredible!
Was waiting for your review!
Great job man, your reviews rock!
1:17 Would police officers really put up a 'Welcome Leon' sign in the station like it's a childrens birthday party though?
Sorry if I'm being a duche, but do you really needed to give spoilers about the beginning? Is a tech analysis or a story comparison?
Yeah I'm kinda bummed about that. We haven't seen anything about the intro and I was looking forward to see how Capcom changed it up. Then he walks us through it scene by scene. Not needed at all for a tech analysis video.
This video is a spoiler fest, stay away from it!
Thanks for posting this. Saved me from spoiling the beginning!
Agreed. I wish they would release a version with just the tech analysis.
Yeah, as like everyone did played it already!
Another amazing work. Congrats tJohn!!
Was expecting just a graphical and performance analysis, and instead got an awesome comparison. Thanks DF

Great RE:Outbreak soundtrack in your video.
Nitramuse Stronghold outbreak had some most remarkable soundtrack of the series. I really hope they will remake Outbreak. The idea of outbreak network play was too advanced for the time, but now it’s the great time to re-release this classic using RE engine
@@gagatai it has perfect emulation on ps3/ps4 via cfw. They don't need even to remake it.
Fun fact is Outbreaks devs made Revelations, RE7, the remasters of RE1 and Zero and the remake of RE2.
Is there a Language filter in the settings for this game?
By far my most favorite channel on youtube!!! This was one of the coolest games when I was13 years old, can't wait to revisit this horrifing city!
BEWARE, LOTS OF MID GAME SPOILERS AHEAD!
Finally, Ive been waiting for this, i was going back and forth on should i buy for my x or pro, ended up gettin it on x
I usually bank on the X but japanese games have let me down and I find out they perform better on pro (Ace Combat 7 for example).
This is such a huge release though I also went with the X here too. I'm only now seeing this comparison lol
Ace Combat has no effort in it by Lazy developers but RE2 remake will perform the best on the X like 99% of the games.
Thanks for this and highlighting the similarities and differences brilliant to see great work from Digital Foundry as always. Wow that audio type stuff was crazy! With RE2: Remake and RE7 Capcom has some skilled current staff. Bring on RE3, Dino Crisis and Onimusha Remakes please Capcom.
great video john.
Waiting for 4K. Come on UA-cam!
Thanks for the work, John, but you are also showing encounter changes from original game to the new game - not just a tech analysis. A ****SPOILER WARNING**** tag would have been appreciated. Looks like a fun video, so I will return at a later date after I've played the game.
RE engine is so underrated even by Capcom themselves at times so glad that they pushing its tech and shipping so many games on it this generation.
Sayo Manzini yup and it uses the Havok physics engine that powers all Halo games. Amazing really.
Great video. Thank you!
Please hire Lotus Prince! he is the god of Resident Evil comparisons!
But this is not a Resident Evil comparison channel, even though the video might give this impression. It's a game-related technology channel.
John I love you but I can't watch this, I want to go in as fresh as possible. All I came for was to find out if the rumours about RTX support were true and get some info about visuals and performance.
No RTX support.
Thanks for teaching terms. Love this channel. Still the best on youtube
John your videos give me life. Keep up the good work!
12 minutes in and it's just narration/video description for the opening of RE2 for the hard of sight.
danwarb1 It’s literally a let’s play video, very spoilery , killed my first exeprience with the game.
I appreciate the effort John but there were just too many spoilers for my taste. You could have made a separate video where you compare this to the original and go all out on spoilers. I think that would have been a better choice. Anyway, keep up the good work.
What if this is the separate video
@Steff Redfield This is not a video about what happened in the original game. This is a video about what they changed story wise in the new game. Even if you played the original this video would be spoiler heavy because it details exactly what they changed.
OOOOOH, I'd never noticed the trucker checking the body is actually doing the same as Leon in the original game!
Another great informative video. I am so excited for this game. Can't wait till tonight to play this on the X1X. I absolutely love what Capcom has been doing with their remasters/remakes. Thanks..
lots of spoilers in this guys
Spoilers from a story told 20 years ago? Oh no!
Uh yea... dont be that guy. it's not story spoilers but more of spoiling the experience especially the beginning it's way different from the original, since it's a reimagining of 2. He also spoiled the look of the alligator. There's an obvious reason why Capcom never showed the two or anything specific late game
@@t.o.p.4175 erm yeah, and like, it like, totally ruins the experience and like, stuff.... alternatively, kiddies are too young to remember the true originals. "whats a ps1?" :)

I have to say this, the love and effort in this video was very appreciated, regardless of the comments gripes about spoilers. I love how you compare the two games and show the differences and similarities in gameplay and story AND tech used in each, and I don't know how you had the time to put out this video before the game even came out. @@sausje with that logic i might just aswell play the original cause its all the same. I dont want the changes spoiled
@kevar p and @TheInkSpoots
So they changed a few small things around, but the main story is still in big lines the very same.
I can't help it that most of you where prolly not born early enough to have played the original. But you cannot blame another person that did play the original for telling the same story that has been around for 20 years. Simple as that.
That's all I'm going to say about it, people can keep crying like little kids about a 20 year old story being spoiled but all it will do is shy them away from making even more videos.

Is there gonna be a performance comparison between versions at some point? I’m interested in that part of it, and I don’t want to risk spoilers. Thanks, DF!
I like DF videos, bit you should add spoiler alert in title. I didn't watch any review cous of spoilers, and you did magnificent job in this one.
An option to turn off chromatic aberration would be great for consoles... it's an effect I n I'm sure many others do not like.!!
Hi John, I usually don't make any comments because english is not my first language, but this time I wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos and your deep knowledge about games. This new video is not an exception and the comparison between the original RE2 game and the Remake is awesome. Yes, maybe the video is more suited for people who already has played the new game (wich isn't the case since launch date is tomorrow), and the spoiler warning is a must this time, but it is a great video nevertheless. Keep up the good work! C'mon John, don't be discouraged!!! PD: Can DF do any retro video about 8-bit era filmation technique?
I'm so glad John is doing this one. Feels like a DF Retro.
