Yeah.. funny thing is, in my memory it was far better looking than the PS1, except the cutscenes. I played both versions on the same CRT TV, about 5 or 6 months apart and when running the N64 version with expansion pack installed it kinda blew me away how cleaner and sharper the game looked. I guess this video favors the PS1 version due to modern LCDs we are watching this on.. but on my classic 29" CRT tube back in the day, the PS1 was all pixelated as any PS1 game with character meshes morphing all over the place, pixelated backgrounds and the blood splash of zombie bites or gun shots were that huge pixelated mess.. N64 version looked smooth and sharp at the same time.. The blurrier backgrounds only make it look more movie like and smooth in a CRT TV.. the character were incredibly crispy at 480i with better models and more stable without all the morphing. The cutscenes were the only downside that was immediately noticeable but I was happy to see them anyway. The compressed voices were not noticeable unless you compare them like John did here.

@@evilzinabyssranger5695 thats true. But with the sucess of RE 2 Remake already, there's a huge possibilty to bring them back, including RE 3 Nemesis. I hope . I still play these games ^^
I was in middle school when RE2 came out. I wasn't allowed to play it but I remember talking about it with friends and reading as much about it from magazines. Every time the tv commercial aired my eyes were glued to the tv, "if the suspense doesn't kill you something else will"... I did eventually borrow the game from a friend 6 months after launch and played it at night while my parents were asleep.. good times good times.
Superb video John! Lots of research there, I learned a bunch of stuff about the game's creation process. RE2 is one of my fave games of all time, in my top 5 all genres included. My brother, who is not into playing video games(but who likes table top games and horror and occult litterature), insisted on watching me play the game(and OG RE) all the way through back then on my Playstation. he loved the atmosphere and the tension the game brings, and so did I! It's one of my most cherished gaming memories ever. And I'm glad DF Retro is getting super nerdy on RE2 today :)
Oh snap finally! been waiting for this one! DF retro is now my favorite series. I own every console version of RE2 but I love my Dreamcast version with the VMU life status.
When I saw you post work in progress on twitter I was so glad to see a video on this being finally made, seeing as there's been so many ports. I'd like to see more survival horror on DF retro, keep up the great work!

I love hearing about the software and hardware details even though I really don't understand them. Rockstar West working with Assembly code commented in Japanese! Amazing! ... Looking forward to more DF Retro.
The resolution switching between screen changes on the N64 version isn’t an issue with an UltraHDMI modded system. Completely seamless, at least on 2 TV sets I’ve used it on. Although, I think the image does shift very slightly from left to right depending on a 240p image or 480i image. Not noticeable unless you measure the black bars either side with a measuring tape.
Thanks for clarifying that information as I'm getting an ultra hdmi n64 I was worried after this video as Res 2 was one of my favourites on the n64 compared to the playstation
1998 still remains probably my fav gaming year of all time. resident evil 2, metal gear solid, tenchu stealth assassins, crash bandicoot 3: Warped, Spyro the dragon, MediEvil, Duke Nukem Time to kill, Oddworld Abe's Exoddus. Man I wish we had years like that now... now we will be lucky to get 1 solid game per year. I miss the good old days :(
Fantastic video, Re2 is one of my favorite games ever. Good to know about the other versions. That gbc port really surprised me, and im interested in the rebirth one
Baka Uploads But the GBA couldn’t, it could run a small demo without any FMVs. Cramming that many backgrounds into a GBA cart would be fairly easily achievable, but even with the technology of today the FMVs simply wouldn’t fit. I mean... maybe... if they used the data storage like GBA video carts, it might be possible, but it would take a lot of work and would downgrade the game a lot.
@@retroboy-fh1ji that's not even remotely close to re2 on n64. Xbox didn't have space constraints,on the contrary there was plenty of hdd space if needed, p3 level cpu performance and decent gpu. Like Doom3 ran beautifully on it. But compress about 1200mb data to 24. That's something absolutely next level and that hl2 running on xbox. Nothing compared to that. And yeah, I'm pc and xbox guy and dislike nintendo.
I loved Resident Evil 2 on the N64, I must have played the game 12-13 times. Thank you so much for this comparison. I really appreciate the amazing work you do!!
It wasn't by that. The Saturn had stronger hardware than the PSX, so it isn't antes excuse for that cancellation. The true reason (i suppose) was due to the Dreamcast launch months after that, not hardware issues.
This episode of DF Retro felt like sipping on fine wine. Congratulations on another excellent episode. That being said, RE2 is on my top 5 favorite games of all time and this was such a treat.
I think the DreamCast version is the best overall (I love the VMU thing), but the N64 version will always be the one in my heart (and nightmares as a child)
Imagine getting a game so packed full of content for $60 today. Two discs with two different characters, survivor mode with tons of secrets. No doubt if this game came out today all of that would be DLC.
The OST is in a special version of the RE Remake. THat pissed me off at first... grrrr. i will cost me more money to have the true sound track wich is way better than the remake one. I wish this to be a standard thing so people can choose by themselves.
I never touched that RE6 garbage but even I know it had FOUR campaign modes, 2 playable characters across 3 or them and then Ada in her own, totaling 7. Try and make some sense and yes, I do consider RE6, a game from 2012, to be a game that "came out today" because Capcom still adopt the exact same garbage tactics today that they did back then. Here is a shocker a lot of people might not know like yourself. The RE2 remake features the original game costumes for Leon and Claire............. and they are 100% unlockable in game. ??????????? Capcom must have had a stroke or something.
Image today a company start a development of a game all over again because they are unsure of its quality. I think if it was made today they be like "put it out as it the rest would be fixed with patches"
The thing I love about resident Evil series is the soundtrack and cool characters. The menu music and save game music is so eerie and awesome at the same time.
What a fantastic video!!! Thank you so much DF! You guys are the best!! Resident evil 2 remains one of the greatest games of all time. They just don’t make like that anymore. At least not often. This game feels like a culmination of what the late 90’s could bring into gaming. Thank you for such a great insightful look at this game. Can’t wait for the remaster!
Compression formats aren't a silver-bullet. OGG, PNG and H265 require a chunk of CPU time to decompress, I do not think these would have been a smart choice on something like the N64 (if they were available). I expect the developers went with the best options available to them at that time (which in the N64's case would have been make-your-own-N64-format). The only reason OGG and PNG are acceptable these days is because we have powerful processors with lots of memory. H265 is a good candidate for modern hardware decoding, so that can even be offloaded these days.
HEVC is passion, HEVC is life. I compressed all my video files into this format. Lost no quality, but gained 2TB of space back. Now i want HEVC 2.0.....
Time has not been kind to my memory of my PC gaming experiences--I could have swore the Windows 95 version of this ran better than it does, ha (it's not bad, just not as good as I remember). Great video as always! You've really been spoiling us these last few weeks with all these DF Retro entries.

@@evilzinabyssranger5695 thats true. But with the sucess of RE 2 Remake already, there's a huge possibilty to bring them back, including RE 3 Nemesis. I hope .
I still play these games ^^
José Henrique parsite eve 2 doesnt hold up
Parasite Eve is the good one 2 sucks
I have heard the word "bespoke" during this video more times than for the rest of my life so far.
Love DF Retro ! The Dreamcast port of Resident Evil 2 and RE3 are my favorites.
Resident ??? Evil??
I was in middle school when RE2 came out. I wasn't allowed to play it but I remember talking about it with friends and reading as much about it from magazines. Every time the tv commercial aired my eyes were glued to the tv, "if the suspense doesn't kill you something else will"... I did eventually borrow the game from a friend 6 months after launch and played it at night while my parents were asleep.. good times good times.
Cant wait for the remake! My mom got this for me when it first came out when I was still in middle school. Thanks mom!
Fun fact: The N64 port of RE2 cost a Million Dollars to make.
Nonsense. It was undoubtedly more expensive than that.
Is that a lot for the time? Not sure from your statement if you mean it was cheap or expensive
Cheetos Ortiz It's about 4206900 dollars in todays market
@@adamkovacs4732 So cheap then? Still not sure of OP sentiment.
@@cheetosortiz2783 expensive for then
this might be the only long game analysis that i didn't hit right arrow key even once, so enjoyable to watch!
Love this channel so much. Great content.

This was excellent! Thank you so much for putting the time into producing this. I was such a huge RE2 fan when it released on PS1. ...
The love that RE2 keeps getting lately is so great! Always a loved game, I'm glad to see the series back in the limelight!
I have no idea where I was or what I was doing on 9/11, but I’ll never forget the first time I played RE2.
I miss the good old days :(
Love me some DF Retro on a Sunday afternoon
I love how much love and work goes into these videos. Thanks guys
RE2make hype 🔥🔥🔥
I've said it befoeand I'll say it again - DF Retro is easily the best content this channel produces. Hands down.
As usual John your work is a complete masterpiece in itself. Cheers for the awesome video
Fantastic video, Re2 is one of my favorite games ever. Good to know about the other versions. That gbc port really surprised me, and im interested in the rebirth one
Best technical achievement award goes to the N64 version, hands down.
This, and Half Life 2 for Xbox.
I mean the gba being able to run re2 in its entirety is way to advanced but okay. Thatd your opinion.
Res evil ds ?
Kamiya stated the reason why RE2 wouldn't run on the Sega Saturn. He put “Too Many Zombies”
Very nice! I remember playing the first and second RE on my PSX, but never finished them. I found them quite difficult :)
@@andrewsqual RE6 to me still amazes me on how bad that game is. Capcom mimic Micheal Bay's directing style to a tee.
Image today a company start a development of a game all over again because they are unsure of its quality.
I think if it was made today they be like "put it out as it the rest would be fixed with patches"
Those campaigns were shit and Adas was DLC
36:22 The best walking simulator in video game history.
John Linneman is the best thing to happen in retro gaming, although watching these at 42 makes me feel so old :)

You are old. Lose the kiddie pic, it's disturbing.
@@nathaniliescu4597 42 ain't old, 72 is. :V But yeah, lose the pic.

The thing I love about resident Evil series is the soundtrack and cool characters. The menu music and save game music is so eerie and awesome at the same time.
This episode is OUTSTANDING!
Love the timing of the logos with the tempo of the music :D Nice touch.
Excellent video, John! Instant favourite like your MGS2 and Soul Reaver videos. And a huge thanks for showing people what Classic REbirth is!
now I can pretend to have known all these things myself.
Indeed! Very informative!
"Doo-de-doo-de-doo, what a beautiful day! Time to shoot me some zombies!" - Game Boy Advance Leon
I'm always ecstatic when I see a new episode of DF Retro. Kudos to John for his great work. Now to wait for the next episode.
With current data compression tech such as Ogg Vorbis, PNG and H265 the game could be squeezed into even smaller size.
@@eiszapfenderwutendenwinde3233 And you play all those video files on a N64 or very similar spec hardware?
Yeah, but try to decode H265 on the PS1 hardware and you set the thing on fire
Time has not been kind to my memory of my PC gaming experiences--I could have swore the Windows 95 version of this ran better than it does, ha (it's not bad, just not as good as I remember). Great video as always! You've really been spoiling us these last few weeks with all these DF Retro entries.
This is the greatest thing I've seen on UA-cam since Reagan lost the election.
Seriously, outstanding.
Chris Hülsbeck the audio magician. He's the Hans Zimmer of video games.
Fantastic video! I was waiting for this one. Well worth it.
y'all need a netflix contract. DF Retro is top quality!
Great episode, thanks !
REsident Evil 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, i hope there will be an episode about REsident Evil 3.
Now my Sunday is complete.
Fascinating stuff, 40 minutes just flew by watching this! The passion for these games really shows here. Love it.
nice
I also really hope that an MGS3 episode is coming some day
The PC version is the first and only version of RE2 that I played it rescently with some fiddling about with gamepad support injectors and what not.
Looking forward to the remake and great video as always!
damn that japanese cover art is sick! and that dreamcast jewel case!!
Amazing video! I knew many of these infos but seeing it with your style is fantastic, well done 😍 i simply cannot wait for the remake, its been 20 years since the original, times really flies, i wish DF do an analysis for Valkyira Chronicles 4 and DQ11!
I hope they put the original on the new game disk.
I love your passion. Hearing your voice come on with the music is just perfect. Like a guide through history. ❤️
After playing almost every version out there I can easily say the Dreamcast version is the best, closely followed by BioHazard 2 PC modded and on third is the excellent Gamecube version. Aside from those other versions are okayish as well :)
Why did you choose Dreamcast over PC?
I had no idea that the SourceNext version existed, many thanks for another awesome episode! Many thanks!
Resident evil 2 in my opinion is one of the greatest horror games ever made. Don’t @ me
That is not a controversial opinion
@Marco Hernandez
Great vid. Resi 2 was the first horror game I played and loved it. Can't wait for the remake next month!
