    And after all that, they still just sound like a pedal. The fuss over the Klon is incredible. Probably my second least favourite drive type behind tubescreamers.
    Still, I decided to add a klone to the collection. I went with the MXR Fat Sugar. Not because it sounded better (they all sound the same), but because I'm an MXR fan boy, it's in a large housing, it's pink and it's called a Fat Sugar. What's not to love?

    Call me crazy but, the differences in all are relatively negligible. But I'm the guy who could never hear the difference between 18 ga. lamp cord and Monster Cable to my speakers. JOYO (pricewise) looks and sounds like a winner. Archer, clean and strong. And as of today (5/5/22) MXR is selling a new FAT SUGAR (standard housing), sparkle pink, and will take a 9v battery w/internal switchable true bypass for $79.

    i wish someone would rehouse an original Centaur in 1590BB enclosure and compare it to another original Centaur just to see people saying that the original is better. kinda like that Tubescreamer magic chip nonsense that was tested with a live group and no one could tell the difference. the circuit is great sounding, that's it, the rest is hype and scarcity.

    Trying to do a blind test on my studio speakers. After a bit, I started to memorize the order. So I wish there was a way I could shuffle.
    But to the best of my ability to be objective...
    I consistently didn't like the Conspiracy Thoery. It's not that I thought it was bad whatsoever. It just has a quality to it that isn't for me. It's a quality that I think is well-suited for more hard rock, borderline-metal guitar players and less for a blues-rock guy like me.
    I would hear the Tumnus at the beginning and nothing else seemed to be as good. And Idk if it's because it was first? But it seems like it just has the right sound.
    And then the Tauren would get my attention again. Those two sticked out to me.
    But I think I like the tumnus better. The Tauren seems like it has a more open sound, which makes it a bit less forgiving to Pick/finger noises. I recently got the Joyo Taichi and I feel like it's the same way. Like when I compare the Taichi with my Blues Driver or Tube Screamer, it is somehow clearer and more dynamic while emphasizing more of those picking noises than the others. As if the others are ever so slightly gated. It's a very subtle quality and a minor criticism. But I think the Tauren is doing the same thing.
    Other than that, I think I like the tone on the Tauren and Tumnus best.

  • @Da_Publick

  • @alienlovesecrets9379
    @alienlovesecrets9379 4 роки тому +7

    Don't they all sound quite the same? I thought so, while listening. I don't think there is one pedal you can't make to sound like the other with just small turning of the knobs...or did you notice big differences in feel?

    • @lancecass8997
      @lancecass8997 4 роки тому

      When I demo'd a few of these, they'd only really differ at some of their extreme settings. But yes, you're correct, a few knob twists and you can get damn close. In person, not video, some high and bass frequencies differ slightly, but in a mix not so much. I think you'd be happy with any of these choices. I love the small size of the mxr. I've owned a soul food, and had problems with the switch shorting out, my only complaint.

    • @drdre4397
      @drdre4397 2 роки тому +2

      @@lancecass8997 In a mix yes very little difference. The soul food and the MXR sound not great here but I own a sugar drive and it's great in a mix. The archer is closest to what a klon is, the tumnus js great but I already the sugar drive and it's not worth switching to the tumnus.

    All pretty similar. The outputs and gain levels are a little different. Way Huge seems to have slightly more bottom end, Pegasus seems to have more clean signal mixed in so has a little clearer transient response. Interesting video, I own the Way Huge, doesn’t seem like I’m missing out on much but not having a more expensive Klone. If anything I like the low end a little better. Thanks for the reassurance!

    My ears might be going, but I've found you can make almost any drive sound like something else with an EQ pedal right after it.
    Now if you get a programmable EQ and dial your settings in, you can get 4+ different ODs in two pedals. You can make a TS sound like a Klon, A Klon like a TS, BluesBreaker, it's almost limitless!
    You're welcome ;)

    • @joshrdealmusic
      @joshrdealmusic 3 роки тому +1

      They really aren't that transparent, and I think that's what can throw some people off. They actually get darker and midhumped the more you turn the gain up, but they can be very uncolored as a boost, which is probably why people call them "transparent". They are a great boost or front end stacker with a more neutral overdrive, like a Bluesbreaker or Greer Lightspeed.

    My Way Huge Conspiracy Theory pedal sounds thin and frail through my Fender 65 PRRI compared to my Wampler Mini Tumnus. Through the Vox AC 10 with built in gain, both pedals sound fuller. I dont recommend Way Huge Conspiracy Theory, it just makes you want an overdrive pedal. Somehow in these videos Conspiracy Theory pedals have gain. I would recommend the Tumnus. I first tried the MXR Sugar Drive. It had barely any gain, I recall myself imagining hearing any. May have been defective

    • @fuckenps3
      @fuckenps3 19 днів тому

      Mosky is so cheaply made. I had their DOD 250 / MXR Distortion+ clone and they had installed the wrong potentiometers so the gain sweep was finnicky to dial in properly.
      Granted not many people would notice the difference between a Mosky Horsey and some of the pedals here in a blind test, I just don't trust Mosky's manufacturing practices...

  • @DougMen1
    @DougMen1 2 роки тому +1

    The clear winner to my ears is the Tumnus. It sounded positively magical on every clip. My least favorites were the Soul Food and MXR, which both sounded just like they did when I tried them- lacking dynamics and with shrieky highs. The Archer was ok, but not for $200. There was nothing really special about it, and I like the Archer Ikon more. The Way Huge was very disappointing, also seemingly lacking in dynamics and sounding very dull and bland to me. My favorites after the Tumnus were two of the Klones I own, the Pegasus and Tauren. The Pegasus is one of the lowest gain Klones I own, and, because of that, is more open and less compressed than many others, although I like the slightly higher gain Caline Medusa even more, which is kind of their take on the Archer Ikon. The Tauren is just about halfway in-between the Pegasus and Medusa as far as gain level and compression goes, but the highs do get spitty when the gain is all the way up. My other favorite that I own is the Movall Minotaur, which is a little higher gain than the Pegasus, about like the Tauren, but is still quite bright and open sounding. It's just a rehoused Azor AP-320, which is the Azor Klone, and Azor is Caline's line of mini pedals. All the new Movall pedals are just repackaged Azor pedals with fancier graphics
