*FINALLY* !!!! A Channel that knows how to do a *PROPER* multi pedal comparison! THANK YOU! Using proper guitars and the same chord progressions for each pedal. Not sure why this concept is so hard for other channels so I’m gladly subscribing to this channel… you did not waste our time here… this was PERFECTLY done. Pedal comparison: That Carl Martin was Devine! Wampler also really nice with the SL being right there as well. Those three in particular did very well. Thank you again for this comparison… it was by FAR the best video done on these pedal types. I’d be really curious to see how the Charlie Brown and the PAL800 would do in a similar shootout. Many thanks again for this video as it was super helpful. 👍🏻
I agree. THIS is the way to do a proper demo. I also agree that the Carl Martin and Wampler sounded the best to me. I would have rather seen the .45 Caliber used for the J Rockett pedal as well as have the Ramble FX Marvel Drive v3 used in the demo, but still this is how videos should be done 👍
Carl Martin sounds clearly the best to me. It has a clarity that the others don’t. The wampler sounds good too but a little heavy in the bottom. Which can probably be tweaked out.
I own a DLS. If buying and had a crowded board already the SL hands down. The Carl Martin sound pretty authentic. The DLS was not set for the Marshall sound though, set it like you would a Marshall amp and check it. Thanks for your time effort.
I just ordered the Wampler mini, and the SL Drive. I have the Carl Martin saved as a favorite in my cart. I can't wait to hear these through a few IRs and my little Fender amp. That SL Drive is a steal! Thanks for presenting this!
@@tincupmike32 I felt like I got the most gain out of the Carl Martin, the best feel and tone out of the SL drive, and mix of gain, but somewhat artificial tone out of the Wampler. I ended up keeping the SL.
My DLS running @ 18 volts on super lead mode sounds ( to my ears) far better than what I heard here. I feel like the tone of this pedal can be...vibrant? And this depends on how you dial in the sound you are looking for. Still, I really like your approach to doing reviews! I am happy I subscribed.
In which case 9->18V must impact the sound of the DLS in a different way, than what I have experienced with pedals offering 9/18V (18V = harsher tone, more 'in your face', more 'glassy' treble & less refined mids) Funny thing, I found the DLS to sound most artificial/'pedal' in this test... Yea, I guess another case of ears, eyes, and YT-compression... sigh!🤞😉
I have to echo many here in saying that the Carl Martin sounded best, with Wampler running a very close 2nd. After listening to these comparisons, I pulled the trigger on the Carl Martin Plexitone to run into my Frenzel 800FM Rack Preamp. I'm going to pedal stack it with the Canyon Crayon 69 pedal.
Nice comparison! Full disclosure...I own one of these pedals and I love it. I think you have to go into this comparing the pedals based on which one sounds the least like a pedal and the most like an amp. I eliminated the Mad Professor and Wampler due to this. I generally like pedals from both manufacturers but not in this comparison. The Mad Professor sounded like it was "trying too hard" and this like all the Wampler overdrive/distortion pedals (except the Ratsbane) seem to have an annoying, metallic chirp built into them which I don't like. The Purple Plexi sounds very dark to me and SL sounds a little thin. As for the Animal...sometimes it sounded OK and other times it didn't with a flubby midrange. The Carl Martin pedal was really good and is my second choice. The best one, in my opinion, is the Dirty Little Secret. It's marketed as a foundation pedal that could be on all of the time having all your other pedals run into it because it reacts like the amp it's supposed to emulate...a Marshall Super Lead or a Super Bass depending on the position of the internal dip switch. It also has controls just like a Super Lead/Bass. The only thing I would like more about it is if the presence control could be adjusted externally rather than internally.
What! My DLS sounds like the video, which is crap with the same setting as the video. Have you ever used the real thing? Or read the manual? Did you set it in Super Bass or Super Lead mode? Please dial it in and redo the video. The Carl Martin and Wampler seem like good choices also.
I went to a store and tried both the wampler mini and the Xotic sl drive. In my opinion the sl drive is much better between those two. Stacked with a boss sd-1 it sounds very good, it is very gainy and at 9 o'clock your already past Van Halen 1 gain level in this setup with the boss at 0 gain.
Top 3 for me 3.Carl Martin Plexi Tone 2.Wampler Plexi Drive And the winner is 1. Xotic SL Drive Sounded best to my ears plus you can run it at 18volts for more headroom if needed and 4 internal dipswicthes for added flexibility 💪🏻
Have only tried the wampler plexidrive mini and AB it to the sl drive, it is less bright copare to the sl drive and also scooped in the mids. It is said to replicate the Jtm 45 sound while the sl as the name says Superlead.
Carl Martin all day! I'm spewing, cos there was one for sale cheap recently on Gumtree, local to me, but I skipped past it, not realising how great it is.
Gotta hear the Colombo Audio Plexi Breed = It's Legit !!! I did like the Carl Martin, Xotic & J. Rockett & thought the Purple Plexi sounded (by far) the worst = woofy-bottom & fizzy-top.
Like the Martin. Own the DLS. But this review does not do it justice. Other posters are correct. 18V, Super lead switch and set up like dialing in a Marshall head. This is outlined in the user manual and on line reviews.
The Carl Martin, Wampler, and SL drive were the best. The true test was the clean tones. All the others sounded fizzy or muddy or too distorted in the clean demo.
Purple and Mad Prof sound somehow wrong to me. Not bad, just not open enough or EQ'd like a Marshall. Animal and DSL are sounding okay, but maybe better in the room? The Carl Martin sounds pretty good, but might not have a wide range between lo-hi gain? Hard to tell. Was debating the DLS, SL and Wampler, but now I think the SL is the right one to try first. Thanks for the excellent comparison!
You done it all wrong with the DLS eq section.. I'ts not like a classic eq when you cut or boost freqences, on the DLS when it all on max the eq is flat, from there you can just cut how you like... You cut it too much, that's why sounded so dull Otherwise great video!
i've put the puprple plexi aside for a future buy, but no way :) wampler and carl martin are serious . Tho now, dirty little secret is not exactly the one to compare, too complex
Can someone explain to me the difference between these pedals and a "hot rod plexi" style pedal? They sound really similar to me. The hot rod pedals seem to have more gain and harder clipping, but setting the gain below saturation I can scarcely tell the difference.
there all pretty bad at Plexi . carl martin was the best out of these. considering getting the 20 watt studio plexi or jcm 800 there gone up to $1700 now. unless i find a better pedal
the DLS3 sounds like shite. TH was wrong with the designer's ears at the time of creation? to be fair, though, its superbass mode is good; the superlead mode is what sucks.

Wampler and Carl Martin are the best to me. Tried them both real life, very dynamically responsive to picking aggressiveness.
Carl Martin sounds clearly the best to me. It has a clarity that the others don’t. The wampler sounds good too but a little heavy in the bottom. Which can probably be tweaked out.
I have no problem on Wampler bottom. Just dial the bass knob counter clockwise depending on your sweet spots and you are in business
Agree
Carl Martin for me, which I have now ordered. Thanks!

The Xotic was so spot on. It just needs a 3 band eq to keep it from mushing out at max gain.

And the winner is
1. Xotic SL Drive

The Plexi Tone runs at 18V internally, it has a charge pump like a Klon.
The Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe can be running at 18 volts too and it sounds phenomenal!

I have both prefer the Carl Martin three controls are enough on a pedal to dial in a good sound especially when gigging
You can't go wrong with either Carl Martin or Wampler here. All others sound too muddy and/or fuzzy to my ears.

The Carl Martin sounds just like my old Super lead 2 head both quiet & cranked.
Something about the SL drive that sounds authentic. Carl Martin, SL drive, then wampler for me.
The Carl Martin, Wampler, and SL drive were the best. The true test was the clean tones. All the others sounded fizzy or muddy or too distorted in the clean demo.
Fantastic review!! Wampler for the win. Dirty little secret dont sound anywhere near a plexi. 👍
Carl Martin and Wampler
I liked the :
Carl Martin Plexi Tone best.
Animal #2
Carl Martin! Best Sound for me!
I like the wampler the most.
Just what i needed ;) Thanks
Klasse gemacht - danke!
Dirty Shirley and Loud & Proud are based mainly on the Super Lead. Not quite a JTM. Actually both are close to the Jimi sound.
I thought that the Loud n Proud sounded most like a real vintage Marshall cranked in the room. The imperfections made it sound less like a pedal
Great demo! 👍 Xotic FTW
Carl Martin for sure. If Greg Howe is using this pedal that means it's a mean pedal!
Purple and Mad Prof sound somehow wrong to me. Not bad, just not open enough or EQ'd like a Marshall. Animal and DSL are sounding okay, but maybe better in the room? The animal has more dynamics, bass, warm and in your face sound. Best IMO
Make a Plexi pedals comparison version 2.
PlexiTone and Wampler is the best
definitely the Carl Martin... close second is the Wampler... everything else falls off from there
Carl Martin sounds better to me. Great comparision.
The carl martin sounds the best by a huge margin.
Great comparison
The Wampler is the most authentic one.
1° Rockett Animal
2° Purple Plexi
3° CM Plexi Tone
Is this a clean channel setting and then only pedal
Carl martin, no question

Rockett Animal, CM Plexitone, and Wampler Plexi drive..in that order.
SLP pedal Brunetti Company is the best.

You just described the difference. A "hot rod Plexi" style pedal is like a modified Plexi to increase the level of gain.
