    Really GREAT job showing the possibilities of each. Amazing coincidence that my ranking is the exact order in which you demo! I own the first three. I have never bonded with the Zen but your demo sounds very nice, I need to pull it out again. Love my Euphoria but love the Big LLoyd F-6 made by Brian Wampler's co-designer a little more it's along the same line but just sweeter. My Simble in my setup is not quite as dark as in your demo and another great sounding and playing pedal. After those the others did not send that tingle up my leg.

    I liked the Dude and Zendrive, but still prefer my Cornerstone Gladio SC over them both for that Dumble sound. It has a clean blend that give it an airiness / glassiness that you normally only find in a real that is breathing. Great demo.

    The Dude changed my playing in the best way! 30 plus years playing and it got me out of a rut in a snap. The harmonics are palpable when in the room. I'm always skeptical of digital reviews but this one was on point. The Simble was pretty good, too.

      That one really jumped out at me. less compressed and the whole top end presentation was more 3D and bouncy. Similar to a good Klone, in that the upper mids are just more 'alive'. I'm not sure how Dumble it is, but I liked it.

      Yeah that ZenDrive just hits the sweet spot nicely. Almost can put these pedals up against some of the more popular “Plexi In A Box” type pedals and I bet people would vote for a lot of these over those if they were blindfolded :)

    Lately tested the Dude, the Euphoria and the Zendrive side by side for about 3 hours. The Euphoria is the most versatile, it ranges from a clean boost to almost a fuzz. Good for people who love to turn knobs, but I was looking for a set and forget pedal. The Dude sounded great, but I found a setting on the Zendrive that exactly fits my Strats and Teles, my Firebird is very ok with it. But it also depends on the amp and even more on your fingers and last but not least on your ears.

      Upon a 2nd listen here and funnily enough, all the “green pedals” have some “fizz,” with a shifted Mids. To MY ears, the Simble and The Dude have the most “resonant” qualities and the “Dumble In A Box” vibe. No need for another Tube Screamer, nor do I have the $$ for the D-Style amps. MY .02¢

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 3 роки тому +3

      I'm probably one of the few here who know how right you are, and one of the few to have actually played an Overdrive Special. Alex only made about 300 amps, and I don't even know if he's still building or not. Anyhow, the OS I tried was a 150 watt head and cab at a boutique shop in L.A. in '87. I knew the owner of the shop and was just there hanging out, checking out an LP Standard I was thinking of buying. The owner says, "You know what a Dumble is?" and I say, "some mysterious amp all the big boys are playing." So he said, "stick around, this guy's bringing one. I'm gonna see if he'll sell it. So about a half hour later this guy shows up in a 928 and rolls in a head and cab. He let the owner play through it, and then I plugged the LP into it. It sounded great. I'd describe it as a Deluxe Reverb kind of tone with a lot more volume and a lot more gain. It wasn't a heavy metal amp. That was never Alex's thing. But you could get a great variety of highly controllable, very articulate sounds, and it felt great to play through, a great spongy, biofeedback dynamic. When the shop owner offered ten grand the Dumble owner said, "I'm not selling it. I just wanted you to check it out." He was some rich guy who just loved collecting very expensive gear. He just wanted to show off his toys. After the guy left the owner said to me, "I haven't been able to buy a Dumble yet, because most of the players who own them won't part with them. They are all custom made to very exact specifications." See, when Alex builds an amp, he won't do it for everyone. He has such a reputation he can pick and choose. If Larry Carlton wants one, sure, he builds one for Larry, but if Mick Mars wants one, no such luck. Now, I will say the closest thing to a general Dumble tone is the OS, but no two OS's are the same. It was never a production line thing, but rather a blueprint for one kind of amp he built. For SRV he build a custom Steel String Slinger, which I believe was designed for pedal steel, but became a favorite of SRV and blues players. If someone really wants a Dumble style amp they should look at Two-Rock or Fuchs. Great amps, but yes, they will set you back at least five grand. To me, that's just insanity. I know how to get the best tone for myself for peanuts. I've been playing for almost forty years and know my gear and what I need for my style. I wish more players would do more research and get away from boutique silliness.

    • @theonlyrobot

      Yep. Make a mid focused EQ drive, and one of the 300 Dumbles will be pretty close to it. Wasn't the ODS #1 inspired by a TS-9 he heard live? Nice full mids, tight bottom, upper mid detail and bloom. Compression as you like up to a full squash. Pretty much gets you there.

      Lucky You, and me cause I bought the Dude V1 used from a girl who didnt want the Dude anymore, ok....,anywhoo its good to know one real Dumble and Dude have such similarities! (Just looked at a Dumble clone amp and it was still( a head) 3000€s...and it kinda sounded not right for me...)., I call the J Rackett HRM pedal the Dudes kid bro, and I also have the Mojo Hand FX DMBL, which is very close to Wampler Euphoria...., last but not least I use the finnish(im a Finn btw...) Simble first on my board for a darkish jazzy tone with my Yamaha Pacifica 112V neck pup! I was gonna buy the Wampler but I really think my Mojo FX DMBL is as good, with the rock/jazz switch and all and bass and treble knobbies, I probably wouldnt have use for Wamplers open position for i got plenty many OD peds, if I were a rich man I would buy the Wampler Euph in a heartbeat, but I bought a wintercoat instead...warm and fuzzy..., .... the original Dumble amps obviously sound quite different, cause for einstance theres finnish videos comparing the Simble pedal side bye side with an actual amp..., when I play my Yamaha Pacificas 112 V neck pup through the Simble I think mellow jazzy tone, when with J RAD HRM n DUDE n Mojo FX DMBL its more like strat n fusion type approach......go figure... I play trans amps...( its almost uncanny how the DMBL and Wampler sounded exactly the same at a setting, they must have some same components, anywhoo, cheerio, and whatnot, oh yeah, keep playin, its fun! luv, K : )

      Are the vertex pedals not good?

    • @IamMusicNerd
      @IamMusicNerd Рік тому +2

      @@xealzy944 Vertex pedals are amazing, and probably the closest to a real Dumble, (multiple musicians with original Dumbles let them use their amps to voice the pedals as accurately as possible). But a lot of people do not like Mason from Vertex because he copied a Wah pedal years ago and his marketong made it sound like it was his original design. He apologized for the misleading presentation, but people have never forgiven him. However, he works closely with a ton of huge music artists (Cory Wong, Robben Ford, John Scofield, RJ Ronquillo, Tosin Abasi, Rhett Schull, etc) designing their pedal boards, and many of them use his pedals as well. So even if he’s made some poor choices in the past, and people don’t like his marketing, clearly a lot of influential musicians trust his products and expertise. You may not like him, but he knows his stuff.

    Lets' be honest. They all sound pretty similar. I have had a Zendrive for about 15 years which I find is particularly good with a semi hollow. Another "Dumble style" pedal I have is the Vertex Ultraphonix which is slightly more aggressive than the Zendrive and is a worthy contender.

I could have ordered the part and did it myself. I wondered aloud if the existence of a quick connect indicated an awareness that the switches were unreliable. Then the subject changed to the volume pot taper which they sorted out for the v2. I felt like i bought a product that was built quick and dirty with whatever they had laying around. I got so worked up about it i started shopping for a replacement and posted a negative comment on this thread. Eventually i got a reasonable deal on a Shin-juku.

    I've owned the Euphoria, the Joyo, and Rowin and Tomsline copies of the Mooer. The Euphoria's bass was too mushy and fuzzy for my taste and the mids were too scooped. The Rowin and Tomsline were uninspiring, but the Joyo sounded pretty good, however, it was poorly shielded, and became an AM radio when I turned up the gain as much as I like. I now have the Caline Mellow Drive, which I like more than all the others I've owned. In this comparison the Zendrive blew all the others away, with a harmonic richness and magic that the others couldn't match. The Dude, Mooer, and Joyo were close though, while the Simble, and especially the MXR, were really lacking and disappointing, and the Wampler had irritatingly shrill highs
