You know, the fact that I never feel you're trying to sell me YOUR pedals actually makes me consider buying one of YOUR pedals even more.
The soft sell
It’s a good strategy of his lol
It's just great content. The fact he owns so many pedals by other companies says it all, I kinda think he genuinely just likes pedal
@@geartweaker8518 and I thought I was a pedal junkie
I have a Bonsai it’s amazing
Josh: i'm just human, just a normal guy
> a normal guy who owns serial no. 000002 Klon
I wonder if he “has the box”?
That would kinda qualify him as a pedal deity.
@@dlbrownmac That was literally my first thought when he held up that pedal.
Can you actually play guitar?
@@montydaniel6597 can anyone? Really?
josh, if you ever read this, your channel is a Gem to the guitar community and pedal fanatics, thanks for sharing your love of pedals and knowledge with us. keep making awesome videos.
Totally!!
Yup.
And when he stops making videos, will you judge him?
Yes ! and I will gather a centaure legion and confront him to start making them again.
@@Saf1ouane Or WE can start making them again!!
Just got a Morning Glory and I can't recommend it enough for that sweet honey mustard tone that I always wanted but couldn't get from a tube screamer or a blues driver. It's an absolute must have for that low to medium gain tone. I've become an instant JHS fan!!!
Thank you! Glad you love it :)
@Alex Hays It'll become your instant favourite, 'always on' pedal for the rest of your life, I think.
Agreed. The morning glory is probably the best out there, even better than harder-to-find overdrives. But you know how guitarists are suckers for hard-to-find stuff
@@mikaailahmed2285 that's what i do too. See what my heroes use. Julian lage being one of them too. Cheers!
what is a sweet honey mustard tone? i didn't know foods have tones.
"Mid Frequency Hump"
Should be a Tshirt and I would buy one right now
Green background but the image is a Speed Bump sign.
Now I’m imagining an camel singing in the alto range.
Mid humps - black eyed peas
Classic. How about "The best mid-frequency hump I ever had"
Bottom end hump?
Let's take a moment to appreciate the high production quality of videos on this channel.
The quality of every video is gold, which isn't mentioned in the comments nearly often enough.
That's because we know! HE knows, THEY know, WE ALL know...
I really want a video going over their production. The studio, lights, camera, audio setup, ect.
If that video already exists then point me to it!
I have no business watching these videos. Pretty much here just as a music lover and the production value.
Let's mention it every time then. C'mon guys, we can do it!!
Cheers Simon ! Some of the replies to your comment reveal that there are those who would rather not see the Man behind the curtain.
JJZ...(°¿.°`)
I've been changing up some things in my rig lately and as I shop for new overdrives, I can't tell you how many times I've come back to reference this video. Very helpful and informative!
Best 18 minutes I’ve ever spent on UA-cam. Thanks Josh.
I love how Josh understands that his pedals are a niche market and that not everyone can afford them, and he doesn't mind promoting other pedals and gear. This is very wholesome. You can also see that he is a pedal enthusiast at heart and just enjoys playing and commenting on them. Keep up the good work.
P.S. Will buy a JHS pedal just to support you
They actually have a budget series now, Series 3 and he still compliments other builders....very cool of him.
I think he makes more good by helping us understand pedals. That should make us better customers.
@@Siloguy wouldn’t exactly call it budget. More like “budget in the context of the brand’s other products”
Edit: grammar fix
@@Ampher03 okay, competitive is a better word.
True greatness is made by those that boost it there. Go get all 7 of the soon to be coveted “white” line of JHS pedals. I play them, what the hell do you play?
It would be cool if there were a "family tree" diagram showing the different tribes of overdrives with all their descendants.
@@joeyskar I really hope Josh DOES read this for that exact same reason
I ve been wanting on of those for a while now.
Excellent idea
That is a good idea.
We talking poster or t-shirt?
when I used to go on Reverb and look at overdrive/distortion pedals it wasn't clear if I was looking at overdrive or distortion. this video makes all of it make sense so thats pretty cool, i ended up with 3 different pedals in this video all in different categories and I'm happy about that
I’m glad you’re covering several variations on the theme of overdrive pedals... I’ve just recently picked up the guitar again after decades, and although I’m a massive fan of music, I’m a little lost on the effects pedals so you’re giving me a solid education.
Josh, you should seriously consider making a coffee table book about pedals. The real deal, the size of a briefcase! All the nerdy details. Like this video, the main pedals in each category and their clones...pictures, circuit diagrams, charts and lists...it could (and would) be glorious!
...on a side note, I'm still waiting for my Behringer pedal that has been backordered since you did your video on them...just sayin'...
Google Dave Hunter
@@sfermigier Awesome! Thanks
@@sfermigier wow there it is..
THAT is as good idea. Luscious photography.
A better idea might be a box with components to build your own pedals on a breadboard and try and compare different prescribed options by Josh. 'He's in the box'
I had the weirdest dream last night that I met Josh at the back of a McDonald’s and he let me choose a pedal for free. Man I watch this show too much lol
Please never swallow 9V batteries again
what did u choose?
Josh please send this man a pedal!

I just wanna say your production quality is insane! Thanks for providing us with near endless resources for understanding our gear, you guys are awesome!
By far, best od comparison I’ve seen! Technically informative, yet entertaining and very well produced. Thanks JHS!
I love the fact that a Klon Centaur clone is called "The Conspiracy Theory".
Way Huge pedals have the best names lmao
Should be the Klonspiracy Theory
Soft clipping, warm clipping, little ball of fur
best comment!!
Happy clipping, sleepy clipping, Behringer...
Hahahahahaha!!!!
That's funny 😄
Happy clipping, sleepy clipping roar, roar, roar.
Thanks for the advice, Josh! The overdrive choices are getting overwhelming, and your breakdown is a big help.
Great synopsis on the different types of pedals. I really enjoy your different series on gear. They are always informative and entertaining. If I could afford a JHS, or had any room left on my board, I would probably have one. Every one I have tried has sounded incredible.
Really knowledgeable guy that doesn't take himself too seriously. Hat's off!!!
That's this whole channel man! Plus thier pedals are all made in the US. I just got a 3 series reverb and feel so good not knowing it was made by some starving Chinese kid.
Also humble. He heaps praise on competitors often. I consider him one of the most honest guys in this field.
@@voodoochild1975az agreed
Yeah dude, I didnt really mess with pedals til i found this channel. Helpful, entertaining, approachable, exactly how I like to be taught things haha
@Bad Guacamole fair enough
There needs to be more people like Josh and Brian Wampler. Love that they aren’t just promoting their own pedals, but talk fondly and knowledgeably about others. Very refreshing. Other industries should learn from this - it’s nice to be nice!
it's a good thing to give credit where credit is due...there's a lot of great pedals produced by a lot of different people...
Arguably he's promoting other people's pedals and talks fondly about his own lol
it seems like most of the fuax-boutique pedal companies are like that, i.e. wampler, jhs, earthquaker etc
Dude, how smart is JOSH? He has leveraged Patreon to cover his marketing budget. Brilliant use of emerging tech/social media. It's like Walmart paying their employees just little enough so the employees can collect a meager paycheck from Walmart, and still collect government entitlement money. Walmart made their money by splitting their payroll costs with US taxpayers, crushing its competitors both large and small who foolishly paid their employees wages that could keep them in a home, with food, energy and transportation. It's kinda like the giant corporation of Walmart is part of the US government, or maybe even better stated, the US government is a part of the giant Walmart corporation, comrade. Genius business exploit. Kinda makes sense why armed men with guns (police) are shutting down small businesses all over the country, but there is NO thought that Walmart would be closed down for the duration of this profoundly deadly plague, the likes of which hasn't been seen on this planet since the black death in Europe took fully 2/3rds of the population... and our modern plague appears that it will not leave us for years, maybe decades, just like the endless war on terror we're still fighting (even if we don't personally, or publicly think about it anymore).
Most people start businesses and focus all of their time and energy on making a great product or service, and they often achieve that, and then fail as a business. But the geniuses who find success make a good enough product, but spend their time and energy to find some way(s) to externalize (a) major costs, whether that be Dow figuring out how they can freely dump toxic waste into drinking water, waste that would cost substantial amounts, maybe even prohibitive amounts of money to dispose of in a way that didn't cause cancer/death and profound birth defects in large populations for many generations to come, more generations than since the founding of this nation to the present. Or, like say, an energy company that can dump waste gases into the atmosphere, using our limited breathable air as a free and endless waste disposal system, or in this cases, JHS externalizing their marketing costs by using social media/Patreon to cover/externalize the cost.
Two pedal companies being equal, the company who can 1. Market better, and 2. Externalize major costs, is going to CRUSH the other company. It's not about the product, its about the business.
Genius.
Don't think I'm neg'ing out on JHS/JOSH, I'm not, kudos to them/him finding and successfully using this market exploit. And I, personally, simply really enjoy these videos, I'll never be able to afford his products, yeah, even that new budget line (unless I can get them used in 30 years for half the price), so I'm not watching as a consumer, I just enjoy the videos, Josh has a way, a way that is so, so close to a 90's big headed jiffy pop nightmare, without that giant melon actually exploding, and the videos are well done, well lit, and within that, I like the bright lighting, I like the present, focused, productive look created by the, flat, bright, but ungrateing/unglaring lighting, great sound (and getting better, less boxy room noise now, nice work), great shots, the "set" is perfect, great balance of snarky self deprecating humor that does nothing to cover the enormity of Josh's ego, and information, and I dig the demonstration jams, or just demo riffs, although this vid is weak on the riff, come on Josh!
And more important than that, I always learn something watching these JHS videos, I often watch them again, a year or so later, as my knowledge and understanding expands, I can glean more from the videos, more than I was able to perceive on the first watch, so, I think this is a pretty strong indication of (my ignorance, but) these video's useful informational content. And more often than not, I learn many somethings per each vid, something I'm very appreciative of. I literally took notes on this, my second watching of this video, so I can investigate these circuit topologies in my extreme budget price zone, like used, very low market, patiently sniped Soul Food, Green Mile, and Ultimate Drive.
I'm setting up an upstairs mini-rig with an old, barely working Yamaha 80's solid state bass amp that I bought from a local thrift store when they reopened the first day after shutting their doors due to covid, so I actually found a deal because most people were still hiding behind their front doors (have had covid twice now, power to the people!). I bought this amp for another (acoustic, but playing electric for the first time, no electric guitar, no amp) guitarist who was playing with us for a while (until... baby on the way, bye bye, dude!). But I'll repurpose this crappy amp to use for an upstairs guitar mini-rig at my bedside for those (most) days when I can't get downstairs, days that have recently turned to weeks, and now actually months without playing or writing music, as our household's infrastructure and transportation crumbles from age and overuse with little or no maintenance due to a lack of money, time, knowledge and ability, everything demanding, stealing my attention from doing what I need to get done with the time I have left.
But these extended music droughts have been causing my mind, and morale to quickly turn bad, like unrefrigerated, increasingly feted, raw fish; to the point where I'm not playing music and still going whole days getting nothing useful done anyway, as my overwhelming need to make and play music confounds my intention to respond to the necessity of our family's material dissipation. This wicked process is exacerbated by the looming omnipresence of my diminishing days, as functionality departs my brain and body, as they are disassembled by a confluence of limited and therefore damaged Norther European Islander genes, bioweapons loosed, intentionally... unintentionally, it doesn't matter, the liability being so grand in scale, making the disease undiagnoseable by those sworn to Apollyon whose extremely lucrative monopoly is established, protected and enforced by those who created and loosed the weapons in the first place.
So, as I, and we, come apart, simple, and only partially known scales (I'm not a native guitar player, never had the fingers for it, bass was my instrument in the live/guitar based music world) become increasingly unrecallable, and the lines I write in them even more distant, in the moment as I receive them, and over the days, especially now most days, when I do not revisit them. My weak grasp on everything I've committed my life to is slipping away, and I know my time is now short. So, I'm really profoundly hoping a mini-dose on the mini-rig on a daily basis can cool my raw fish in those small moments I'm afforded by decay, like the moment between putting my socks on and finding which door I left my crap clodded shoes behind.
So, I have to make some decisions as to what to bring up, and what to leave downstairs on my proper rig, and this is complicated by my now more often use of overdrive/distortion pedals on synth/drum machine, so have to be really cagey about what I allocate to where. But I want to try these topologies first, isolated on my actual amp/cab to understand their differences in my context, but then also to really figure out how their differences interact with other cornerstone pedals, like my most expensive and decadent pedal, the used Swollen Pickle I managed to pick up at a bottom of the market price. How do these topologies affect the extremely complex, interactive, and extensible Swollen Pickle (which is so underrated, I swear, most people seem to buy it, plug in, adjust a knob or two, and don't immediately get the sound they want, then post negative opinions about the pedal online... I can go from light overdrive breakup to hellish broken velcro with the Swollen Pickle's 7 interactive knobs [on a fuzz pedal, yo, thank you George, the diametric opposite of EQD's discrete, one knob fuzz]. I wish Josh would *always* include a budget pedal when he discusses a variety of pedals in some category, that would help a lot of people... or maybe it wouldn't, as those actually affordable pedals instantly jump in price from a mere mention by Josh, or become unavailable entirely. Maybe he is too big now to help us littles, his benevolence may only do harm now? Tricky situation this freely available information age.
I'm not a fan of Brian's channel, no offense, I find his videos painful to watch. That may be because Josh has way more of a team in place to produce these vids, so they're way easier on the eyes/ears/subconscious, whereas Brian seems like he's raw dawgin it, just himself in his space, with shorts, white socks and black sneakers, throwing up some lights and a camera tripod wherever and whenever he has the time, and kind of wings his way through the vids... most viewers don't know, it takes a concerted, and large, at that, effort to produce a simple, well flowing, watchable 10 minute video for You Tube, let alone producing a channel/brand with an enjoyable consistent aesthetic. Josh's son, that little dutch dude who plays drums is a friggin gold nugget, I think he has brought this really solid video brand together. I think if it were solely up to Josh, the aesthetic/video brand would be a mess, I mean, look at the pedals, no bueno, inspire no lust, never mind the sound/functionality of the pedal, the market is deep, good aesthetics are just a baseline necessity at this point, even Boss's timeless, utilitarian, jelly bean, 2nd gen CR-V boxy functionalitiness is pleasing and inspires desire... that Boss/JHS combo pedal even looks good. And, even if Josh is going for an anti-aesthetic with the pedals, it's not triggering that "monkey grab" pleasure button. So, in the pedals I think we see Josh's (lack) of aesthetic command, but in this channel, we see his son's aesthetic, which is VERY strong, and well executed. I think Josh is figuring out a little better how to be the boss (not Boss), how to find and work with talented people, and let those talented people do their thing to their maximum potential, while Josh still has control of everything, making the right decisions, exerting just the right amount of force and control to produce something he is happy with, while really bringing out the best of his collaborators/employees, those people bringing serious multiples of value to the company/brand than what they cost.
So, UA-cam videos for even a small company require a lot of talent and skill, and that is a lot of work for one or even two people, especially if that person/people are trying to run a company, like designing pedals, managing production, sweating payroll, distribution deals, law suits, etc. etc.
And in the end, it seems like Josh is closer to my zone of guitar taste, where Brian seems to focus on the blues lawyer crowd, not my taste, though I'm a former lawyer who really enjoys the creative use of pentatonic scales, aka QOTSA, as an obvious pop example. Just saying, I don't know of the artists Brian mentions in his vids, I guess they are country/southern artists???, I don't even know the genre(s) Brian designs for, if that is any indication of our musical/sound proximity.
Again, no offense at all, both of these guys appear to be great dudes, and both companies probably produce good products, I don't know, I've never felt (I was kinda shocked at the cheap feel of EQD, if I'm honest), let alone played one of their pedals irl. I've got nothing but respect for both of them for simply building and running successful companies, here in America, in these times, yet another thing I don't think most people/consumers are aware of the immense difficulty/complexity of. I'm just shooting the shite with random strangers in virtual space with no consequence about our opinions/tastes, and more than anything, I'm trying to be positively constructive.
All the best everyone!
Thank you very much for this. I have been puzzled by the various types of OD pedals and found myself drawn to some and repelled by others. Now, I finally understand why in both cases. You are the first person I have run across who has the technical credibility, and who understands the big picture enough to present this in a well-organized fashion, the categories and sub-categories of pedals based upon their circuitry. I also appreciate your ability to speak about your competitors's products in sincere, objective and sometimes flattering terms.
Been playing 34 years and have been a tone junkie the whole time....yes we might know many things...but most of us that know stop and Listen when Josh has something to say...Thank You in advance for being a necessary tool in the Tone Quest...you are totally appreciated!
I learned a lot in this video and I love Josh's narrative style.
He'd be a great history teacher.
Me too! Love his sincerity.
He is obviously getting tired of the know it all type of people. I appreciate how he never hesitates to promote other companies, that is just pure honesty and integrity.
@@JohnDoe-pq8yw Exactly. I love that. It's quite rare.

10:50 a proud Malaysian passes by! But the way, "Ceriatone" is pronounced as Cherry-ah-tone, which means "bright/sunny tone" in Malay/Indonesian language
Props to Nik Azam and his team in Malaysia. I have two of his amps and a Centura. Great quality and design!
Thank you, Josh. That is probably the best explanation of the basics for different overdrives that I have ever heard. Impressive. 😎 The comparisons through the same rig, same chords = priceless for a guy like me. Thanks again.
Josh. Please let that dog in the room. It's what the people want.
Josh is the only guy without eyebrows that I trust 🤣

Thank you sooo much for this video Josh! Very eye opening and helpful. You hit the nail right on the head. MPJ's Land of the Living is by far my favorite record of his to date. An amazingly talented singer/songwriter with an incredible voice...inspiration for days. Also, Tyler B's guitar tones on this record (specifically on Cancion de la Noche) are just magic and lush. Gives me chills every time. I really want this on vinyl.
Awesome work Josh. The shootout at the end really reinforces my love for blues breaker style of pedals.
I love how this show is becoming an organized, interactive reference book with an index pointing you to other "pages" of the book to take you deeper into a subject. Or maybe like in comics when they reference something that happened in a previous issue and there's the little asterisk pointing you to the bottom of the panel where it tells you exactly what issue. I really dig it, and I thank y'all for all the hard work.
That's one way of looking at. Another way is maybe we're in a cult - but somehow Josh isn't the leader, just another member. "Cult Of Sound" (I think "cult of tone" has already been used once in the comments a few videos back.)
This guy has "the ear", not just "an ear" but "the ear". He's like a wine taster that's been going at it for umteen years. I could never go as deep as this guy has. I trust his judgement on many levels. He's a pro.
He's not just a taster; he also grows, harvests, and processes his own pedals
This is my absolute favorite episode to date. It is informative, the jokes are excellent, the record is great, and it doesnt go on so long that i start wondering if i should be doing something else.
Thanks so much for a detailed but well-organized explanation! I learned that for years, I've been misunderstanding much of my own gear.

I would buy a t shirt-“I have a dog, he’s in the hallway, we can’t let him in”
But could you post a picture of your dog waiting in the hallway?
Really, really useful show. Has helped me a lot on my guitar/music journey. Thanks, I appreciate it. 😉👍
Completely brilliant. I love you Josh. Complete respect. I love how Impartial you are and how respectful you are of other pedal makers. Amazing
I’m a guitarist that went 5 years without getting any new gear. I got stuck in a rut and used the same couple of sounds every time I played. It’s because of this channel that I am excited about gear again. I just bought a new pedal and I feel refreshed and inspired to play more. My next purchase will absolutely be a JHS pedal. Thanks Josh!
Been through the same journey over the last two years. The irony being that when I was a full time musician for eleven years, I couldn’t afford to add new gear, just a Fulldrive 2, a Maxon OD9 a Univibe and a couple of Fender amps. Now I’m doing a 9-5 job, less professional playing but enjoying the addition and exploration of new sounds.
This is the smartest marketing I’ve ever seen in the music industry. Hats off 😌
Makes you want to buy a jhs pedal
Finally got a Morning Glory v4! This video helped me expand the overdrive section on my boards. Have wanted a JHS pedal for a while. Understanding the differences was key.
Your video was so cozy between the edits and the personalism behind your spewing of knowledge was very enjoyable to say the least.

How elegant to present competitor pedals and even considering them your favorites. That's class!
I just want to thank you for talking about the blues DRIVER. I have this pedal and I love it. But I feel like it's forgotten on all of the pedal videos I watch.
You'd have to pry my BD waza from my cold dead hands...
Could never forget about my BD-2... or the OD-3!
It's the one pedal I absolutely need... I was surprised to learn it's transistor based though, I thought it was just an Op-Amp, diode clipped overdrive like most are these days.
all of the tones dialed in demonstrated here are pure bliss !
Josh, thanks for all the great recents. Especially the PG vids. Goodness, you two are great together. Ordered my PG-14 today. Now lookin' over a Bonsai and a muffeletta . Thanks for all the support.
Six foot six? ... I didn't know they stacked shit that high!
Just joshing. 😜
The Plexi Drive is a GREAT pedal. It never leaves my board.
+1 for the Plexi Drive. It won't leave my board either.
Josh - One of your best vids here. Never underestimate our ignorance... or poverty. I love that you show a range of pedals in each overdrive category, but I wish you'd always include one low priced pedal for the po boys/girls out there, as we are legion. Thanks a million!
These shows are great. I wasn't even into pedals, like previously, but liked watching them. Josh is a natural presenter.
He definitely made me buy some stomp boxes.
Josh is such a wealth of knowledge and all of his videos are absolutely phenomenal
Playing another dude's pedal, being a normal human being and recommending wonderful music. You got my full support man! Thanks for being awesome.
I’ve come to the conclusion that this man reads my mind and hears my unspoken questions and makes a video accordingly. Therefore, Josh is a sorcerer. All the proof needed.
Hands down the best gear demo Channel on UA-cam! I love your dry humor and the knowledge that you impart on all of us! You are just fantastic and we don't pay a dime for it! So thank you for all you do brother! By the way you could have delved into the Boogie V-Twin, Chandler Tube Driver, Fuzz Face, Maestro Fuzz and first-generation Big Box Rat!!!
I just started watching this channel (compulsively now), and the highest compliment to me is that the videos seem to take half the actual running time, whereas just about any other guitar-related channel’s videos seem to take twice the time.
I cannot express in words how awesome it is that you show such respect to your competitors. That speaks incredibly highly of you, Josh. The side-by-side comparison at the end was really helpful.
So glad you mentioned the bluesdriver. I use it to give a bit of grit to my clean sound, a half way house between clean and my standard OD sound.
This was a fabulous lesson! I will build a board someday. JHS will have a substantial presence there.
It IS overwhelming - hard to see the trees for the forest! I’ve needed this info for quite a while. Thanks for the clarity, Josh (and playing the same riff for each) 👍
This was super enjoyable, being one of the people who doesn't know everything. I wish I had found your stuff sooner! Thanks for doing this.
I watched this video like 10 times. Ended up buying every type of overdrive. Can recommend.
I love your show. Really.
I'm learning so much, and I was around for the classic pedals, the70s pedals. You've saved me tons of cash and headaches.
Your a really good teacher.
Josh keep up the good work these videos are informative and quite funny. I literally burst into laughter at the end. I love how knowledgeable you are, the fact that you show multiple pedals of the competition and speak highly about them, and the comparisons are great. I love my AT+!!
Only centaurian ears can detect low gain elven diodes.
I can hear pudding
Fantastic, informative video. I wish I had this info many decades ago when I first got into guitar. Thanks!
Great video! I really enjoyed the side by side comparisons. Now I just need to figure out which one will compliment my amp well. The search continues, and thank you for further education. This video was very helpful! I am a nerd...
Hearing the theme tune makes me feel all fuzzy inside
I’ve watched this several times now, learn something new every time lol
Seriously, one of the best informative comparisons ever.
Thanks for this video! I've been thinking about getting an overdrive and was never sure what to get (or what the differences were). The moment you played the Wampler Plexi-drive I said aloud, "that's the one!"
The best! Such useful info and I learned a ton about the different styles of OD circuits. Thanks Josh!
"Everything about pedals and life in general." That is what I come to this channel for. Thanks JHS, you are the source of true pedal and loud goodness. Keep it coming.
These videos are the best. You’re doing a a public service for all of us indecisive musicians
This is one of my favorite channels. Always puts a smile on my face!
Wow you can really hear the clean under the dirty sound with the clon style pedal, didn't notice on the first playthrough, but when you played em all back to back it was really neat, thanks!
I like this guy, level headed, I think it would be fun to work with him.
Best, simplified and most informative pedal video. Thank you. This was more productive than a 1,000 videos with guys just playing/wanking with one pedal but not able to even say what kind of circuitry and why their unique sound. This is impartial about what pedal is "best or worst". It's simply better for people to understand the differences, options and colours available out there and then they can go from there, depending on their needs and subjective taste. PS. Really great video quality, too. Cheers from Toronto. ;)
This show feels like family, feels like home. It’s so great, congratulations
Thank you for explaining the 5 different types of drives makes so much sense.
I owe it big to this channel for introducing me to the klon circuit. Thats a whole new overdrive for me and it might just be the what I've been looking for.
follow up. I got a Joyo Tauren and I'm in love with it. We're getting maried and I'm pregnant with its child.
I've been using a Blues Driver for years, for a variety of settings and works really well. I prefer it to my Tube Screamer. In fact, I never have been able to warm up to the TS, even though they're well liked by many. Thanks for the educational vid. I had no idea of the differences.
Love your personality on these videos. You make learning about these things fun.
I have always been more into the clean guitar tones, but am having a little fun trying out distortion, so this was very helpful.
I think one of the more interesting aspects of distortion pedals, is how they respond to dynamics, when they are just on the edge of breaking up.
Am picking up a few inexpensive versions of the classics, to experiment and see for myself, how they sound/feel, and if I enjoy them.
Will also be trying them on other instruments, like drum machines, synthesizers, bass, and keyboards.
Thanks for this, and all your videos, and best wishes for your continued success 🎶🎸❤
Man, I just love your videos. I like to think I use my ears to find what I like and what I don’t, and sometimes your videos helps me find out why I don’t like an effect . I don’t see you talking much about Freedman’s and Bogner’s stuff
Just got my JHS Bonsai, amazing!!! Hats off to putting 9 TS style ODs in one pedal.
I totally agree. The boss blues driver is a very underrated pedal.
I have one, plugged it into my 1st-ever tube amp (vox ac15), and hate it
Edit:
I'm starting to like it more, but I don't see it as a main pedal
I have a byoc blues driver copy that i built. Its by far my favorite overdrive pedal i own. And i own dozens. Ironically i dont have an original boss bd2. I Gotta hit up Reverb and GC used listing and snag one.
One of the most popular OD's of all time. Not really underrated.
The Boss OD-3. Now that's underrated.
@@kilgoretrout321 - This is why ice cream comes in more than one flavor...
@Reid James The Blues Driver is on countless pro boards and has been well-regarded for decades. It's used in an ungodly amount of Nashville sessions, too. That's why it has gotten the Waza treatment. It's not underrated. It is literally how Keeley became a big deal. Modding THAT pedal.
Thank you for this record. MPJ's discography is one of the best things I've listened to this year (2022)
I've grown to absolutely love the intro music to this show.
hey josh! thank you for sharing and taking the effort to do what you do. we love your content. don't worry about the haters. we may not make as much noise as them but the numbers and views speak for the quality of the videos. have a great day dude!
Yesterday I've ordered my first overdrive pedal, an OCD clone. Now, thanks to Josh, I want to have at least one from each category someday lol
Would be interesting to hear your take on dual overdrive/ distortion pedals. Thanks for the info. Helpful video.
I love your rundown of overdrives. You skipped my personal favorite (Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor) but it's not too common so I didn't expect you to mention it. I also like how you mention some of the competition pedals out there too.
I don't even play guitar, I'm a drummer but I love watching your videos, I've learned to distinguish different sounds and I always listen to the record recommendations. Thanks for sharing all of this Josh!
Have you experimented with percussion through effects, especially od/distortion? There's a whole world awaiting you man..🎃
From someone who's never got on with OD/dist/fuzz, I really enjoyed this episode and learned a lot so thank you. Still think the best OD sound is Neil Y's exploding tweed amps but I'm keeping an open mind ;-p
Wow! I am truly impressed the way you presented everything
Dude this was way cool. Been playing guitar for decades and never really gave a lot of thought about what styles of pedals I had. I have every style in my board apparently and even some of your notable mentions. I really liked the comparison of different styles at the end. Really puts it into perspective. Also, what the heck, I never realized how clean my Klon sounds when compared to the other. I’m baffled. Haha 😅
I wish you would do an episode on Z Vex. They're just so important to "boutique" pedals and the Box of Rock is legendary!
I bet universities have already called him to give courses about those subjects because he really naturally got the theacher skill in him
My best loved pedal is the JHS Andy Timmons. Since I use it, I go on buying other OD/distortion but all of them are my second choice. This pedal is absolutely incredible. The switch that allows you to choose between three different wattage is so versatile!
I found your video very informative. Thank you. I also loved your asides, I look forward to more. The record by Matthew Perryman Jones…is tremendous! For all that I thank you for today, some years after you made this video, I deeply appreciate this recommendation of an album by an artist I didn’t know and was incomplete because of that absence! Marvelous!
This video is why I continue to watch Josh and respect his opinion...he wants to help, show other people’s work even though he is a pedal designer himself, and he’s awkward as fuck and I can relate. Salute, Josh...rock on brother.
