Welcome back, looking quite well
I noticed a slight difference, but not enough to justify paying $5000 over $29.
For his level - its Centaur or nothing at all! And you know what? He deserves it ! His ear is so bored of those imperfect pedals - he got 150 of them ! If he's satisfied with the richness of the sound - than his search for rich perfect sound pedal is over ! I was surprised that they cant make pedal with same sound with todays electronic parts - (close just doesn't cut it)
Too bad the graphics cards from Wish aren't as good as the pedals.
For his level, sure. But the klon clone pedal is 90% of the way there a fraction of the price. Great option for schmucks like me. :)
@@dog61 Nothing like poverty to drive the need for counterfeit goods. I love my SamChung Gallaxcy 8+. I use it to take pictures of my sweet Chibson Res Paur.
They are exactly the same. The first few parts the settings are not the same on both. Try closing your eyes after 6:52.
It's almost like all pedals are made out of the same inexpensive resistors, capacitors, transistors and integrated circuits...
It's very true that when you look at the value of the components used there is a huge profit margin. I find it funny when it says 'hand-wired' as a selling point because even the cheapest 'made in China' are hand-wired and soldered.
Sort of! That's saying very little though. You sometimes look at a 2% difference that makes a difference.
It's like with guitars, doing a fully proper nut and fully worked frets etc. makes the guitar physically 99.8% the same as before, but those piddling minor differences can have a lot of leverage in the overall usefulness of the gear (playability and tone.) Small physical differences are amplified, literally.
Obviously, there's a 'mass' market for players of guitars who settle, eg. who always use the raw and rough factory setup and never try a good guitar tech. Then there's another 'boutique' market for guys who want all their guitars spot on, want to try every overdrive and compression pedal etc. The cheap guys save money and they also support the majority market.
@@j_freed there's a big difference between pedals and proper guitar finishing. Properly levelling the frets and filing the but and setting the action aren't mass producible things. A circuit board with solder in components is. All of the fine work is done once in the circuit design. There is no special soldering technique or way to wire a pot to the board to make these comparible.
@@gavinpearcey Filing the but!!! 😂🤣😂
@@j_freed but will anyone be able to tell after your sound is recorded and mixed?
I doubt it.
Which is why i buy cheap clone pedals
The smaller one sounds thinner. Sounds good, but the $5000 has a fuller sound. That said, I'd never spend $5000 on a pedal.
yeah the wampler tumnus is pretty much identical. The tumnus deluxe is even better. I wouldn’t say its cheap but it is priced normally.
@@anupjsebastian Thank you for your suggestion! It's good to know about these other options!

The clone at the same knob setting was quieter. And louder will sound fuller. I bet if he had just cranked the volume of the clone slightly they'd be near identical.
I'm 45, been playing guitar for 30 years. Immediately went to Wish and bought that Klon clone upon seeing this. It just arrived today and I am over the moon. LOVE this pedal. It's the sound I've been trying to create with my other pedals for 3 decades. Best $30 I've ever spent
Thank you Eric I'm ordering it right now
@batsumoto I purchased a 2nd one. Both sound identical and work great. I cannot imagine how anyone would not be satisfied with the sound out of this thing for $30. Or $100 for that matter.

the $5000 one sounds like a slight amp adjustment away from the $30 one. As someone who collects things I know that it feels cool to own "the real deal" so it really comes down to if you have the excess cash to throw at it.
Honestly, when the drums kick in... nobody can tell the difference.
Or the bass 😂
That's why I'll keep my $85 modded Soul Food. May not be $5000 klon but sounds close enough especially when combined with modded Blues Driver or/and bias modded older Tube Driver.

I bet some people cannot tell the difference when your Strat is in the middle position or neck position in a live setting.
Or in a P&W setting and guitars are almost mixed out completely haha
I would love to hear a demo where the cheap one claimed to be the real deal, and the real one was claimed to be the cheap one. At the end, reveal the switch and see how many people admit to bias of liking the cheap one just because they thought it was the expensive one.

Nice one:)
Actually if the circuit is the same and the components are the same then there's no difference between them. The little differences is due to capacitors tolerance (no capacitor can have an exact perfect value, but the value is in a little range around the target value) so the sum of all the caps imperfections gives to the pedal it's fingerprint. I mean, also two identical 5k pedals may sound a liiitle different
BINGO.
But they're not the same because the original Klon has a black gook that's put over the circuit boards to prevent ppl from doing precisely what you're saying. You can't see the circuits. That said- whoever made this one got really close by just listening it seems. There's a difference in the way they sound but- it's nowhere near the difference of what they cost. The problem is- now there are tons of Klon clones- how do I know if I'm getting this particular one?
@@stoneysdead689 the goop can and has been removed and there's klon schematics all over the internet. You could even build your own if you really wanted an exact circuit copy.
@@couscousdude2991 Yeah- now they have software too that will analyze the circuit for you- you don't even have to see it. I ended up buying a 23-dollar Mosky clone that sounds so much like this 7G pedal if you close your eyes, it's really hard to tell the difference. The original is a tad brighter but, that's about it. JHS did an online test with the two and the guys actually picked the Mosky as the one that sounded best when they didn't know which was which. I think the tone he's achieving in this video that I like so much has more to do with the amp and guitar he's using than necessarily this pedal.
@@stoneysdead689 Yeah, I also watched a video of someone profiling the KTR with the Neural DSP quad cortex neural capture and it got pretty close. Highs and mids were a little off but it's crazy how close it was in 1 tap.

You need to do a blind AB test. You're playing harder on the Klon for starters. Also knob position will not equate - go by ear. Level was lower on smaller pedal with same knob position. I'm not sure there's any significant difference between the two.
Yea, the tolerance on component values will mean that you can not set the knobs to the same position and get exactly the same sound, it'd even still be slightly different if you cherry picked parts between two real klons, whether or not it'd be perceptible to the ear. You can use much more expensive .1% components but that's a massive waste of money and would lead to a massive build cost.
Gotta play around with the knobs to find the same sorta sounds between the two
Fantastic job! Great delivery and humor as well!
Lol. They missed the chance to call this Klone.

I bought the Wish pedal after this video and haven’t looked back. It really sounds amazing. I even bought a Wampler Tumnus and a Mythos Mjolnir (both $200 pedals) to try “upgrading” from it but it turns out I like the Wish Klone better 😅 It just sounds really open with a sparkly upper range and a warm rich lower midrange that sounds great with any guitar just feels so good to play. You did a public service with this video. Wish ain’t no joke! 🤘🤘
There's a slight volume discrepancy due to one pedal being plugged into the other. Once you adjust the klone up a couple dB it matches exactly. I own both BTW.
I thought that exact thing,
you can't have the dials set at the same level, they will have definite discrepancies in their output levels. I thought if he levelled them properly, they would have been almost the same, just like you said yourself.
That’s actually a good point especially for the original although isn’t it supposed to have a built in buffer? Or both have buffers if they’re supposed to be the same?
I think a better test would have been to have each tested individually instead of having them on a single chain.
On top of it Josh from JHS makes the point that the part tolerances are going to be different. You can’t just make them sound the same by using the same the setting. This even goes comparing a real Klon to another real Klon. They are going sound different until you dial them in. A klon or now even a KTR are just collectors items. There is nothing mystical about the Klon. Talked with an electrician engineer and talked about Bill’s story about the rare Russian diodes that he has. He just started laughing at the whole idea. So the only great thing about a real Klon is the origin story you get to tell as a collector.

First, your tones are absolutely gorgeous. Second, I found myself nearly salivating about owning a real one, it sounds so good. But the differences between it and the clone are so small, I could never spend $5k for the original.
This is like when Andertons compared a $7,000 Les Paul against a $700 Epiphone. Was there a difference? Yes. Was it worth spending the extra $6,300? Not really, unless you're a rich rock star.
We're so lucky to have so many smart, talented people on the web teaching. It's awesome when they're also hilarious, (see Greg Koch)! Thanks Tyler! And you may have a side career as a stunt double for John Leguizamo. You look like his younger brother.
The cheap one isn’t bad at all. I actually like the Klon for the cleaner tones, if you have a amp with a good clean channel they’re really transparent for crunchy sounds and the Wish on did very well on the lower gain setting.
*distortion* : 'this is my clean sound'
I lol'd at that too. Clean is relative ok?
That's mostly what I use a Klon for, my "clean" tone just breaking up and getting slightly dirty.
Where is his beard?
@@thesociophobe8425 Most people probably use their klon in this way - as a clean boost (low pedal gain) with some mid push in the EQ. There are many better sounding distortion pedals.
@@JohnShalamskas I run the Klon a bit dirty so it's not a clean boost, but it then goes into an OCD for overdrive, a Rat for distortion or a Russian Big Muff for fuzz. My "clean" tone is relatively distorted to start with because of the Klon, but it's just one of 12 pedals in the chain.
I don't think I would ever be able to justify spending $5000 on a pedal. It sounds great, but it sure as shit doesn't sound "$5000 great." 😬
True!
If it has good resale value then you can always make some of that money back, Maybe even more.
@@d24isDURIAN that's a big if. if it takes years to sell, you wasted a lot of time for a tiny profit. not worth it.

They literally wrote a whole Toy Story movie about it. Pedals just wanna be played, man. I'm hoping that the market will fall apart for vintage 60s cars and guitars and whatelse like it (mostly) has for 30s and 40s relics. They sound most similar with the knobs on 10, so the main difference may well be the taper of the pots. So 12 O'clock on one is 10 O'clock on the other perhaps.
I love how Tomo has a klon, yet only plays clean tones.
He does use it actually, you mostly see him using clean cause it's the easiest for students to follow
and?
If you listen to his albums, like Put On Your Funk Face, you'll hear him playing overdriven Funky music quite often. I don't think Tomo pushed that gain knob really high, like Tyler does, though.
Last hour news: Klon Centaur prices drops to $1000 and Wish Klone prices increaces to $50
I bought one of the Wish “Klones” and it has become a mainstay on my pedalboard. I tend to use it with the gain maxed and the treble set around 1-2 o’clock. It’s perfect for modern rock. If I need something milder for classic rock or oldies a Boss Super Overdrive gets it done.
The Wish klone is a solid, great sounding distortion pedal. If it broke I would buy another.
The Wish pedal is missing something, but it's not missing THE something that makes this pedal so captivating. I can't believe there's actually something on Wish that sounds this good
Ikwym, it sounds "smaller" but on stage with the amp cranked, that's not gonna matter.
Essentially it has the same electronics as the original, so a very similar sound is to be expected. And as the original didn't contain any unusually expensive electronic components, copies of it don't cost much to make.
@@rookmaster7502 there are special diodes in the original klon that are hard to find nowadays. All the klon clones (klones...?) like this one that you can buy for cheap use modern diodes that are made differently, that is why they have a thinner sound than the original klon.

"Tone is in the ear of the beholder." Never were truer words spoken.
The difference in sound is likely down to the quality of a couple of relatively cheap components. Certainly not enough to justify the premium price point on the Klon.
That's the part that boggles my mind. When all components are made to such high tolerances, how do they even sound different?
@@natebeattie8945 Actually, all electronics are not created equal. You can get parts with higher tolerances (more accurate) and it is known that some manufacturers components just don't meet their published specs. The difference of a couple of percent in a component can make a huge difference.

Yes a clear difference with the Chinese replica being more compressed and less overtone-shime. But the difference varies from settings. Very very interesting comparison. And the difference in most places is vague and up to the players fingers.

I want to hear that on a big stage, then we'll know if these clones really cut the mustard or this is just some kind of trick from wish---maybe buy two of these clones and compare them to your klons, then compare the two clones against each other. let's see how well these Chinese manufacturers have this down to a science.

Poor man wins, indeed. My most expensive pedal was $200 new, and most of the rest were $30. I'll pay a company (or a person) for good work, but prospecting is a non-value-added activity, and I try hard to not support it.

Crazy. But the original klon has so much more harmonics stacked up ontop of each other. Almost like it has half of an Octavia pedal in there. Maybe a double stack pot. When you think of it as a "K-style overdrive" it makes the cut, hands down.
Exactly
Pretty good for
Absolutely love your shirt!
Also remember that unless you are absolutely sure the volume output is the same, it’s not an apples to apples test. Volume matching is the trickiest part of all of this. That said, the Klon to my ear sounded better at all settings than the knock-off. But that Knock-off is pretty great for what it is. Makes me wonder if I would pay $100 for a Klone vs $29. The Klon seems more harmonically complex at lower volume, for example. But at the 3/4 knob positions there wasn’t as much difference for me. But again, the volume output of each and how it’s driving the preamp is also a factor. The Klon enclosure is a work of art all its own, and for me that makes it more valuable, just maybe not to the tune of 4K.
I think the original Klon had pots with custom tapers; if the clone isn't matching that exactly you'd get some variation. The germanium diodes are supposedly magic, but really the rest of it is just standard components.
I suspect that if he had just cranked the volume on the clone a bit people wouldn't be able to tell which is which in a blind listening test.
the differences are so small that you can make the bootleg version sound just like the original with just a few eq corrections in post production.
Exactly. The actual drive part is identical.
What are you listening to this through? You cant add eq to make up for lost transients or less harmonics. If the only thing you're hearing differently is muddiness or an eq curve, you need to listen on something more transparent.
@@phryge2468 the breakup is about identical.within 99 percent accuracy. What Alex is referring to is slightly different frequency curves heard. But not really any differences in dynamics or characteristics of harmonics other than very microscopic variations in the timbre of the harmonics.
And any such differences may just be due to different ages of components within the devices. Getting an accurate clone of a brand new Klon and done in china is not hard to do. They are also cloning EMG pickups now dead on by using the same materials.
DEPENDS. You can't make up lack of complexity using EQ.
@@j_freed lack of complexity was not what needed to be made up for. Tibral content is the same or close enough that one can't tell.
The only possible issue we are hearing is potential amplitude of certain frequencies.

@@louiscyfer6944 I just took a chance on the clone and I really like it. It may be that my Peavey amp is a bit bottom heavy and lacks a bit of treble.I did consider the Tumnus but went for the clone instead.
The real one is slightly boomier, but I feel like you could probably add a little reverb on the cheap one and have a sound that is indistinguishable by almost anyone
the genuine unit hits those sweet spots in the notes. but that clone is so close It is amazing. no chills. but good enough for what I would be using. and also what I could afford
You're also running a buffered signal from the wish klone into the centaur itself which makes a subtle difference in tone itself. Great comparison!!
"duller" is a good description for the Klone, but it still sounds really good.
There's something special about the original though, just because there is
The Klone is a lot more logical to have on your board if you're playing out anywhere
You would have to watch an original Klon all gig long. You would have to worry about it getting swiped all evening long. Better to have the cheap copy with you out in the world.
Duller, and narrower. I say that because the original has this fullness that fills the sonic space where the clone just seems like it falls short. A bad example is the original sounds like surround and the clone is in stereo... just something missing.
It's probably a cap change away from sounding brighter, or maybe just bringing the treble or tone knob up a bit. Either way, you can get great, useable tones for $30.
@@Lawrence330 I was thinking the same. Probably just tolerances on one or two components.
@Luke Hill and others...Agreed. The differences are subtle, but "one dimensional" is an apt description for the cheaper one. It just feels like the expensive box has richer harmonic layering, particularly at the high end. I think the more important question regards production: If your mics, mic'ing, mix, or mastering suck, neither pedal is going to sound $5,000-awesome. If you can't properly capture and commit that sound then why bother with the price tag?
My biggest discernment was with the output, the original seemed to have more headroom. Adjust that and I doubt I could tell which was which.
4:40
-"This is my clean sound"
- Strums some heavily overdriven chords
I hate how much compression and eq they do makes the ability to tell the difference harder.
Right. I guess he had a 5 watt tv amp on 11
He just has to grow a beard, now. 😂
Ok I thought the same
When I show a clean tone it’s a very clear bell like tone
No overdrive
I completely agree, I hate when reviewers never demonstrate a CLEAN clean tone first (*cough* Chapman *cough*.) Yeah, I get it, this pedal is usually used to push an already breaking up amp into harder breakup, but we also want to hear what the pedal is doing to a CLEAN tone as well. Otherwise you are only demoing your amp and not the pedal.
This man has been out of ICU for less than a week and is already making videos, such dedication

@@peterwinters8587 he had covid and was in ICU for a while
@@lukemadden4434 thanx for update
Probably recorded beforehand.
I'm curious to know if a simple additional pedal maybe even a very slight EQ change could push the cheaper one over the edge to make the difference between the two negligible
I just got my "Wish Klone" today... I gotta say it's not bad at all! It sweetens the front end of the crunch channel on my DSL40 in an awesome way and in front of the OD channel some kind of black magic happens! I highly recommend getting yourself one if you're even a little curious. Got mine for $36 shipped...
Are we just not going to talk about his shirt saying "Insane klon possie"
I appreciated it. Just didn't think to mention it, much like I don't often mention newsreaders' cleavages. Especially the men's. oh, sorry. Are they called "anchors" now? Whatever.
I want the shirt!!
@John's Candy I meant the newsreaders, not the jugs.
Whoop whoop
The ICP uses $5,000 pedals in their music.
The clone does not have the harmonic sheen as the original, but I bet adding a treble booster after the clone would get you there! IMHO
Bounce a Super Sweet in front of it, that'll kick up the harmonic content in a really nice way.
Maybe, would be interesting to try.
i hear a harmonizer or something doing some low end awesomeness too though, theres some wizardry in that klon
The copy was not as good. But it is low quality at lowest possible price. Im sure you could match the original for less than $100
One of the first gen Icarus Boosts from Caroline Guitar Co. will do JUST THAT fam. Holler if you want one. I have the spec. SILVER and RED one. I thought it would NEVER leave my board BUT my new preamp from my endorse, is a clone of the Integrated Preamp from TC Electronic and is MONEY with the 18v supply. It was THE FIRST one to sound "better" than the Icarus. There is a new gen Three Knob Icarus out that Im sure is more doper. BUT we will seee!
wow,,never heard of a klon,,ever!!!!!--great playin man--love your vids
Not sure if the two units are level matched but, to my ears, the original unit has more clarity, definition, focus and depth. The bulk of the sound is replicated in the knock off but it lacks the nuances that the original has. Great vid btw!
Tyler, you were sick with Covid and pneumonia? Dude I’m sorry. You sound well on this video. Get better and get some rest my friend. Happy New Year to you and Bethany.
It's okay, he HAD to disregard all health and safety guidelines for the LIKES and the SUBS!!!! Literally, he'll want his simps/subs around him just to keep the deafening silence of his own mediocre talent from killing him.
My wife got me a Klon clone for Christmas. Retails for $59 and sounds so good.
Which one is it?
@@namnworbyargaming the Nu-X Horseman. So far I’ve been running it as a clean boost at little to no gain. But when you get anywhere from like 2/3 to full gain, the drive truly kicks ass.
She's a keeper ^^

you have a cool wife man , buy her a drink
My friend, and Rhythm guitarist played his Klon "clone" we stacked it up against many overdrives, trying to get "His Sound". I was surprised, and It was immediately apparent, It was the most transparent, and it went from low overdrive, to medium ,to high overdrive it is"Amp sounding"
I've been seeing these and wondering about them. Seems like it could be closer matched with a slight mod. Pretty impressive base position though. Also I think the monk guy should have come up on the cleanup test. Great tone & playing ;-)
Always amazes me when someone cannot believe that two circuits that are identical sound the same :D
LOL Are you implying that those two pedals sound the same??! Because they definitely don't.
@@GreatBurningNullifier No two analog pedals will EVER sound the same, even from the same company! Capacitors change overtime, imprecisions on the components can drastically affect the overall sound. POTs normally have a 20% margin of error alone! Do those two pedals sound the same? No. Do two original Klon pedals sound the same? No. Do they do the same "job"? Yes. Identical circuits are "almost" identical in sound, it is simple engineering. If you remove the "bias" of thinking that one "sound" is $5000 and the other is $30, some people will prefer one over the other and some will be the inverse (it is a matter of taste and margin of error on the circuit components).
@@bernardosilva7306nah the cheap one sounds like a simulation, the original one sounds way better overall, way more pleasing to the ear, that being said no pedal is worth $5000.
@@GreatBurningNullifier Try a "clone" with better components, for example the Tumnus or the Archer... :D... This cheap one is too cheap, probably have high compromises on parts that have far more margin of error :D
@@bernardosilva7306 That's exactly my point, this is a cheap copy and doesn't sound as good as the original or a "clone" with better components.
You giving this to someone who didn't have the bucks to buy it makes me respect you even more man! ❤️
Thanks Heaven JHS just released the Notaklon pedal!
I can have the same sound of the original at a fraction of current price in the collectors' market. 😎
I ordered the $37 one and it kept showing up with different prices. I accidentally ordered 2 from 2 different people. 2 different prices. And they were both different. One sounded kind of not too great the other sounds pretty good.
ive had a guitar in my hands my entire life, and unless something is wrong with my hearing, the only differences there are are the ones we are forcing ourselves to hear because we want to hear them. its just parts, and they have revearse engineered this thing pretty damned good
The clone, with it being a little darker, almost sounds like it was made for the brightness of a single coil, while the real klon is a bit more dynamic. The clone is definitely a good copy of the real klon IMO.
Definitely!
And its from wish
Its literally just turned down a little/ quieter, more output and it would have sounded identical
Klon clone?
I think if he had cranked the treble and volume knobs just slightly he would have gotten them to match.
Audiophiles catching sonic differences - tone/volume issue can be midigated by caps/resistors. This can be probably brought up to the expensive version, if you take them both apart and compare wiring network/types of caps/resistors
Just got my Wish pedal in the mail today. Can’t wait to try it out when I get home. And at Sundays jam session. Hooking it up to my Peavy 1,000 watt bass amp plugged into my Rickenbacker 325
My initial thought was just "that doesn't sound as meaty as the original". but for 1% of the price? think just adding a bit more reverb will help and totally worth it.
I closed my eyes and couldn't tell when you switched from one to the other. Probably not 100% exact, but the differences aren't worth $4970.
That's exactly what I as going to say. I DO actually hear a difference. As he said himself... the bootleg-china-version sounds a bit duller. But not 4900$ duller. So I would definitely keep that real Klon as an investment and maybe sell it one day to go on vacation or something :D
@@Mastertexter exactly, that was my first impression but when he cranked the gain it sounded a lot closer to the 5K pedal
@@Mastertexter It always sounded to me like the original just had a little more bass oomph to it, just slightly.
Would you accept $4899?
I would be interesting if he compared the internal parts of the actual and clone copy. I'm guessing the cloners copied the original, but with cheap transistors and potentiometers.
Have you tried the Wampler Tumnus? I have one and A/B’d it with the Klon model in my Helix and the two were identical. Some minor variations with levels but very close.
They probably have a nearly identical circuit board and same components.
Glad to see you again Tyler!

I bought one of these chinese klones after seeing this video. not a klon, but a damn fine overdrive pedal. had to install a nine volt battery terminal to use battery powered, and the pedal has the battery safety when you disconnect the OUTPUT not input. definitely some quirks. gonna change out an op amp and a couple resistors. ill let you know if it improves the mud in the sound.
