  • Initial review of the Smith and Wesson CSX with several range highlights that show the speed and accuracy of this new double stack single action from S&W. The CSX performed really well and is feature rich with fully ambidextrous controls including the magazine release, slide lock, and safety. The CSX frame is aluminum with polymer grip panels making the grip texturing on Smith & Wesson's new offering really aggressive on its removable back strap and front strap. It has a steel sights mounted to a stainless steel slide that has front cocking serrations along robust extractor. The trigger system on the CSX is single action only (SAO), but unlike most SAO guns, the CSX has double stack capacity with a 12 round and 10 round magazine being included from S&W. In summary, the CSX a feature rich micro 9mm that maximizes round count in a single action platform, and offers everything a shooter needs for home defense, concealed carry, or just a day at the range.

I using my Shield Plus with Streamlight TLR-6 laser / flashlight combo for home defense and using the CSX for CCW with (painted front sight bright orange with nail polish). The smaller size CSX is just more comfortable for IWB. Hurts like hell to be poked in the belly went sitting down when CCW the Shield Plus in a chair or car seat.

I watched one reviewer discover that his 10 round mag was not properly assembled. He disassembled the mag and found that the recoil spring was not attached to the lift plate which had a pin hole for the spring to attach to. After attaching the spring properly, the mag would seat properly with 10 rounds loaded.

  • @harrycallahan9733

8:50 Totally agree. The sleeve adapter is for those longer mags that are shared with shorter-gripped guns. CSX doesn't have a CSX XL (unless S&W is thinking about releasing one), and even P365 uses one-piece extended floor plates on longer mags shared with P365XL. S&W has been making these sleeves on the M&P for a long time, I guess the designer for the CSX is the same guy who designed the M&P, just couldn't jump out of the box and think :)
9:09 It's not just for the states that have mag capacity restrictions, it's also for people who choose to pocket carry. Before the craze of these micro compact with hybrid mags, there were single stacked 9mm's that were either 6+1 or 7+1. 6+1 type guns were much easier to pocket carry. Since a pocket has finite amount of room, it needs to accommodate the gun, the holster, and the hand going into it, then some additional room for the hand to maneuver in there to get the gun out. So for a pocket gun, every single millimeter increase in any dimension, and every single 0.1 oz increase in weight, counts. The heavier the gun the sooner that pocket will wear out and fall apart. That's the reason P365 is very pocket-carry friendly as it's dimensions and dry weight are very comparable to Kahr PM9/CM9, one of the smallest 6+1 back in the days; and why Shield Plus is not so much as it's based on the Shield, a 7+1 gun. CSX is smaller than Shield, not much smaller so for IWB/OWB the difference is negligible, but for pocket it's noticeable :)

Firstly, another objective and thorough review.
Many points you raised, excellent considerations to pause for a moment before making the purchase.
    The trigger mechanism / reset:
Seen two other reviews that raised the issue if a potential ghost reset due to the pins on the trigger bar?
Magazines are tight sprung, however as in all production industry there is never 100% so I would consider a. Contacting the supplier b. Replacement magazine.
Maybe I missed reference to the recoil?
How was it comparitive to say the shield plus?

Kills me how some don't like or want safeties don't mind it with a single action pistol . Single action pistols need a safety for obvious reasons , but to me ,unless it's a true double action, I want a good safety on my pistols. I have been shooting fir some 40 plus years. When we were growing up ,unless it was a single action revolver or a double action pistol or revolver, guns had safeties and we just never thought about it, it just wasn't an issue. I never heard of anyone getting shot or because they forgot to engage their safety. I like this new single action smith. For self defense, that trigger doesn't bother me. Were I shooting competition, I would want it to be like a good 1911 trigger

I had the same issue with my 10 round magazine. After forcing the tenth round in the only way to get it to seat in the mag well was to have the slide back. I’ll be ordering 12 round mags when they are available and won’t use the 10 rounder. Overall I really like the CSX, in fact it reminds me of my Sig Sauer P938 with a higher round capacity and different trigger.

Called customer support this morning and was essentially told I was the only person who has this issue (more and more production guns getting reviewed have this issue). Smith and Wesson refused to swap the 10rd for a 12rd that seems to have no issues. 7:30 If you put the smaller backstrap on, you will see that it doesn't cover the sides like the bigger one does. And the area now exposed on the sides are just as smooth as those areas exposed all the time. That means for people who run with smaller backstrap, both sides of the grip will be completely devoid of any texture. I think S&W would be much better off if they took the Colt Mustang/SIG P938 or 238 type of guns, and upgrade the magazine to the hybrid design of the current trend of micro compacts. Making the grip looks like M&P, complete set of ambi controls (so you have to find a tool to field strip), and the false reset in a single action trigger, totally ruined this pistol and missed a great opportunity for a unique spot in the growing pool of micro compacts, which they had already missed their first opportunity with the Shield Plus :)

Its not going to have a 1911 trigger unless they duplicated it and it has a trigger safety. I will take a grip safety over a trigger safety any day if its necessary. I don't want anything on a trigger. The only reason for a trigger safety or grip safety is to make the hammer when cocked to be drop safe but with the manual safety engaged its not necessary. Like you said, the only reason to have a SA hammer trigger is to get that clean breaking trigger for accurate longer shots. Something striker triggers can't do.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment Bert. You’re right that its no Staccato in terms of performance/quality. I have a few videos and some experience with the Staccato. This is my initial impression video so it’s less pointed and recorded in one quick session. Hear me out:
I think the CSX has quite a few things in common with the Staccato or 2011 series. I think if it had a lighter trigger more people would draw that conclusion and perhaps like it better. It’s a single action w/ thumb manual with a short trigger pull/reset, the trigger even looks similar to a 1911 style though it is hinging. The gun is comprised of a steel slide with a combination of aluminum and polymer frame that accepts double stack magazines. I like that it doesn’t have a grip safety, and that they made it a lot narrower than the staccato series.. it shoot really well, if Apex or the aftermarket improve the trigger, it’ll go from good to great in terms of carry pistols.. I’m not pushing you to buy it now, maybe S&W will make a 2.0 fixing some of the quirks.
Take care Bert. Thanks for watching!
