    Going to the theater is just too expensive in a regular basis. For me and a lot of people, it has turned into an occasional event, once every few months or so, instead of a semi-regular activity. It's just more appealing to pay a fraction of the price on VOD, Vudu or iTunes than to pay upwards of $20. As a movie lover, who genuinely loves the theater experience, I wish it weren't the case. Going to the movies has become almost a luxury kind of thing. I wish the theaters could lower their ticket prices, but I know that's easier said than done.

      Liz Colton the last movie I saw in orders. The dark knight 2008 , War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017 , the dark tower. Movies are just getting too expensive. 11.69 for adult tickets that's 22.98 for two people. If you want to include tax. Now food at the movies are high. I just get candy. Since 2008 I been watching movies online cause it's free. Sitting in a movie theater for more than 3 hours, if the movie is 2 hours 30 min plus. You gotta sit through trailers for upcoming movies that's 10-15 minutes at max

    Everyone who spent all the money seeing Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man, has to save all the money to try and see Thor Ragnarok, Star Wars, and justice league- all during Christmas shopping season.
    Plus Game of Thrones was the big event in august!

      I should've phrased it "when you are taking a family or a couple kids, it's easily $55-$65 for tickets, 1 large popcorn and 2 drinks. So with the six huge must see films for us fans, we probably won't make it out to a whole ton of others. We did make it out to Atomic blonde, and It though.

    It's pretty simple: Ticket prices are going up, movie quality is going down. People don't want to spend money on possible bad things, so they wait until they can watch it cheaper a while later.

    I think one of the biggest reasons for this drop is the fact that the summer was that the movies were to close. Most people cant afford to go to the movies every week so they go once a month at most. When I talk to people, most saw guardians, wonder woman, and Spiderman. There was no big hits in August like past years. You release king Arthur, Valerian, Cars 3, or War of the planet of the Apes in August and those movies Box office numbers improve as well as the month of August. That's why hit-mans body guard did so well. No competition.

      Michael Dinsdale What these movies WERE also mattered.
      You had yet another couple of superhero films, yet another "apes" movie (a franchise now almost as old as a Bond, complete with is own Craig-like total reboot), and a "what the f--k is this" movie from the guy who did the 5th Element. I think the public is starting to get bored with endless formulaic MCU films and these other ancient franchises that were new and fresh in 1985 or 2000. That's why a film like Dunkirk's success is less shocking than it appears- you had a good big budget movie that wasn't some Franchise Entry #5 or Nostalgia Reboot in a market where those have become distressingly rare.

    IT has a chance of being the first horror movie to open to 100 million. I think it might do that. Tracking has it way lower. But tracking isn't always that reliable. Movies like Deadpool have shown that. I think that based on all the hype and word of mouth surrounding this movie and assuming the reviews are really strong I think that IT has a chance to blow up the box office this weekend.

    • @JTISREBORN
      @JTISREBORN 6 років тому +2

      Coletrain Hetrick I meant make that amount in an opening weekend. Not box office total. Plenty of horror films have made over 100 million at the box office.

    I feel like the summer underperformed and especially August was the old system of the "summer schedule".
    Between the 13 weeks of May, June, and July, there were 20 major releases in what is "big blockbuster hits" including comedies and kids' movies, as well as the franchise films, and general action movies. In the month of August, there were 3 blockbuster releases. THREE: The Dark Tower, Hitman's Bodyguard, and Logan Lucky.
    They packed as many movies as they could into three months and left a whole four weeks open at the end. Movies like Baby Driver, Planet of the Apes, Valerian, and even Alien: Covenant probably would have had better numbers if there weren't five movies people would have rather seen.

    • @mk6rfc1
      @mk6rfc1 6 років тому +1

      Dunno if I would include baby driver in that list cos it did surprisingly well

      Just to prove your point more drastically: Logan Lucky is by far no blockbuster, just look at how Soderbergh financed that movie. It cannot get more indie than this. I wouldn't even include Hitman's Bodyguard in the category of blockbuster, it did (does) perform well for a low budget movie, but I still wouldn't call it a sleeper hit.

    Cut down on the damn price for concessions. Granted a theater's profit comes from selling food but the fact is things like popcorn and soda are cheap as dirt to buy in bulk. I'm the type of person who loves going to the movies but it sucks buying a ticket and then having to pay for a popcorn and soda that costs the price of a ticket plus a couple of dollars. At least lower it by 25%

    • @Lakishia
      @Lakishia 6 років тому +2

      Plus if they lower the concession prices more people would buy from them instead of going to the Dollar store, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, etc. to get their snacks...I mean if you cut the prices and have more people buy from you wouldn't it profit more than high prices with fewer people buying?

    This is why I love that boutique theaters are a thing. I've paid to see more movies in the theater this year now that Alamo is in NYC than I've paid for the past few years (I do get to see free screeners from time to time.) The ticket prices are the same, I can have dinner and a movie and I don't have to deal with your basic movie theater audience. We need more of those theaters!

      Keith MacDonald Totally agree, and still 2017 is not over yet.
      IMHO Hollywood is still producing good and great movies, but not all people have a need to go to the movies and see a good film on a weekly basis, because on one hand, there's a budget issue, on the other hand .... their taste. What we might consider as great films like Logan or Dunkirk, could be boring for others, and it is ok since art is subjective.
      Also some prefer to watch at home using streaming services. For me it is an insult to a good film not to watch it on the big screen, but hey to each their own.
      This year was amazing for movies, and that not counting foreign movies that they do not show in the States. I cannot wait for the fall and all those movies lined up like Murder on the Orient Express, Mother, Downsizing etc...and of course the CBM whether Marvel or DC and Star Wars :)

    Honestly looking at it as an avid movie theater-goer for a long time, I think that this is the best time to go to the theater the catch is u have to know when to go. Most people I know whom have gone the firestick /streaming route are just looking at the shallow dollar which if u have a family I could totally understand. I'm an AMC Stubs premier member and once I learned about attending movies before noon, $5 Tuesdays, and more things to make us come out to the theater I find it more reasonable especially for the movie going experience it is awesome! I rather go to a theater and pay 5 or 6bucks with power recliners and the huge screen vs at home on the big screen and I own big screens lol but the true problem is the lack of quality in movies as a whole. I personally see movies as a whole for entertainment coming to a minimum unless it's a film that's more grounded that all people can relate to like currently (Wind River) or quality animation . As much as I love Star Wars & Marvel, I think it's they're both are about to reach their pinnacles and I want them to remain that way bcuz over saturation will really make the attendance numbers drop bcuz people are smarter they are tired of the same stuff but "Real" films will never die as long as they are in great hands 😉 that's my story and it is how I have foreseen it 😊✌

    Roth and Dan great vid! I love all the insight into the hollywood Box office. Sad to hear the numbers are so historically bad but hopeful for the future of movies. The film industry is indeed in need of some sort of evolution from the old distribution model as most average movie goers arent going to spend such a high price for tickets to films that are mostly repeats, remakes and sequels. I'm holding out hope because I love movies and stories but more and more bigger blockbusters have become more and more average and dependent on CGI and special effects. Give me more Baby Driver's, Wind River's, Get Out's and Split's. Those movies have character development and heart and originality. Anyway rant over. Thanks again for the awesome Video Dan and Roth. You two rock!

    I think this is less about people not wanting to go to the theater and more a sign of how many shitty movies there have been lately. That, and how much the film industry has destroyed the richness of their fan base.
    The constant churn of the same cookie cutter movies has driven people away and changed the expectations of those who still go such that interesting and risky movies can't find an audience.
    Make movies that are a new idea, with good stories, beautiful effects, and we will still flood theaters to see them.
    Make movies that are unique, that are visually stunning, that keep us on the edge of our seat. Make movies that pull us in and won't let go. Or make movies that are new, beautiful, and interesting escapism. But stop making shit like another Pirates, another Transformers, or another stupid comedy.
    And as to the movie going audience... support things that are new and different.

    For all the hand ringing about this summer's box office, yes different distribution models have to be considered and theatres must understand they are competing with a home experience which in some instances is on par or better than what they offer, let's not forget there was some unwatchable shite released this summer. The Hitman's Bodyguard is a passable summer movie that honestly did as well as it did because it had no competition. Movie goers have repeatedly proven: Make a film they want to watch in the theatre and they will run to see it.

    I live in Canada and it cost me over $80.00 for me and my two younger children to see a movie. Movies today are crap with a few exceptions, the prices are to high, treats in the theater are ridiculous.

    Movie apps are great because they tell us which movies are blockbusters e.g. rated 90% or higher.
    BUT they also prevent us from seeing flops e.g. Anything rated 50% or less. Which is great for us because we've saved money on a dud but at the box office this means that less people will go because now they know which ones aren't worth investing in.
    Before all of this we simply relied on word of mouth. Now we instantly have access to know whether a movie is worth seeing on the big screen or not. We'll see how this changes movies on the Big Screen in the years to come.
    Hopefully this means they know they'll have to produce better movies.

    The problem ultimately is the exploding production costs for these Hollywood movies.
    This causes a number of bad effects that are self-destructive to the industry
    1) Studios cannot afford to take much commercial or artistic risk, esp. on "big" films. A few huge flops could sink the company, so instead they try to make a lot of formulaic but 'safe' films. Nobody loses money making yet another James Bond, Marvel, or Alien movie.
    2) The midrange movie is basically gone. Its basically either blockbuster or art house, with little in-between. Those modest but major films of the past were not just a reliable source for both money. They also provided a kind of AAA ball for developing talent- directors, actors, etc.- and experimenting with new ideas.
    3) The huge costs for these 'blockbuster' films mean high ticket prices, huge audiences, and endless advertising are needed for them to earn a big profit. That in turn means they cannibalize each other when too many are out at once, and the producers have even more pressure to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
    Long term, it may make sense to use the internet and high-end TV as your reliable business, talent farm, and smaller scale movies. The studios would then be diversified away from a heavy reliance on old-fashioned "blockbuster" films, and could take more risks with them. Right now a lot of these blockbusters are not even complete movies; they're like extremely expensive, overlong episodes of G.I. Joe. Or big budget remakes & sequels to old franchises, which spend $100 mil to leech off name recognition and show you just how superior the original really was.

    I'm happy about this. I go to the movies at least three times a month, sometimes four or five during the summer. This summer was really disappointing, but HOPEFULLY it leads to a paradigm shift in Hollywood. Stop making crap. Stop rebooting and remaking everything. Fund more mid size movies. People will go if THE MOVIES SEEM INTERESTING.
    It is looking to break $100 million potentially, which is INSANE for a horror movie. It has hype, positive buzz, seems like an event...you can't do this ad naseum, but this indicates that people will go to to the cinemas when the movies seem compelling.

    I've gone to see Guardians, WW, Homecoming, Dunkirk and pirates (boy do I regret that one) this year, the only other film that made me think about going was T2 3D but it was only on one day so I didn't. This year just hasn't been very interesting, WW didn't get its numbers by being an amazing film but only because there was no competition (I even watched it twice because the other films on didn't interest me). There are a lot of films coming out in the next few months that I can't wait to see (Thor, Jl, star Wars, Kingsman) and I think audiences have become aware they've not been going as much as usual so I expect the rest of the year to make a lot of money.

    I actually love going to the movies, but the quality has really gone down. There's a lot of mediocre movies in theatres, and it is WAY to expensive to buy a ticket for mediocre. I won't take chances on opening weekends anymore. I need to check in with critics and friends before I'll shell out these days. It's not that I won't watch mediocre movies. I will. On Netflix or TBS.

    To be fair, nothing really came out this summer. The it big franchise movies were Guardians, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man, all of which did well. Then there are Pirates and Transformers which both underperformed but we're both also reviewed poorly. Same as Alice 2 last year. Dunkirk and Baby Driver both surprised with how well they did.
    August in particar. What was coming out in August that you actually thought would come any where close to making a billion dollars?

    Maybe what we should be asking is if the capitalistic obsession with perpetual revenue growth isn't tenable in the real world. Consistency not just quarter to quarter or even year to year, but decade to decade and generation to generation should be seen as the goal and indicative of health. And it should be understood that in the micro (quarter and year) fluctuations happen.

  • @deepflux

    I go to the movie about once or twice a year but I would prefer to go several times a year. There simply aren't the same quality of movies we had in the past. Movies are formulaic and predictable, and it's hard to get excited about any new movies out there. Most movies seem to be reboots or clones of other ideas. Prices are too high, but the crisis is directors and writers and poor plot and character development, feeling rushed and unpolished.

    The industry is losing hundreds of millions, possibly billions worldwide, to piracy. If not for this, the industry would be well off; thus comparisons of total profits to those of the 70's, 80's and even 90's are difficult to make. Movies are actually more popular (worldwide) than ever before. (Note: I'm not saying they are better- just more popular due to wider distribution)

    One major problem is that Hollywood keeps going for dumb cash grabs. The emoji movie is a huge example. The new Mummy is another. Transformers is yet another. The message is clear. People are getting tired of bad movies. The movies that made money this were were mostly quality. Logan is a rated R oscar bait superhero flick. Get out is a very much a black persons film. Wonder Woman was a female lead superhero movie. When Hollywood took risks they made money. When they played it safe they lost.
