Mother! Was marketed terribly. There's no way you could advertise a mindbending terrifying horror and give people a lofty, experimental, metaphorical, art house film and expect it to go over well. The studio shot itself in the foot by trying to pander for as much money as they can get in the first weekend. They completely underestimated how quickly severe word-of-mouth travels in this day and age.
Word of mouth would have killed this film either way.
It Comes at Night mad the same error advertising a movie it wasn't.
lady09giggles How is that fair to audiences though? That's blatant false advertising. Hollywood should have better morals than that (but that's asking too much). All they're doing is hurting cinema in the long run. That was a pure bait & switch. If you can't sell it for what it is, maybe you shouldn't be putting it in theaters for a wide audience.
Breanna Webber Mother sounds just terrible.
Randomfools That's not hurting in cinema in the long run. Some of the greatest films of all time were critical and financial flops on release. Movies like Suicide Squad and Transformers making loads of money are hurting cinema.
We need more Billy and Dan talking about the box office more often.
ipodtoucher15 he is clearly more knowledgeable in this one. They can find their pace after a while.
Jonathan Peck I 100% agree these two are awesome!
I would have liked to have seen Mantz on here talking about Mother with Dan.
Hopefully they release the IT directors cut for Halloween in IMAX... 🤞🏽🤞🏽
Jennifer McMahon it'll likely be on the DVD I would think
Thank you so much Dan for all the work you put into this show! Love how you showed us the Top 5 for September adjusted for inflation. Missed Roth but Billy did a great job filling in! Paramount tried their best with Mother but it never was going to make a lot of money. I think they never should have opened it the week after IT, and maybe it would have made a little more money.
I think a studio should hire Dan. He's a really intelligent guy who loves movies and I have no doubt he could make the right moves as an executive if given the chance.
Paramount's botched job of advertising mother! will probably "haunt" them and their shareholders. Karma?
People that got tricked to see Mother thinking it was going to be anything but an abstract movie truly failed to noticed the poster. It looks like a Frida Kahlo painting and I guess that was what they were trying to go for.
IKR. There always was a disconnect there between the poster and trailer, and so I didn't go watch until I saw some reviews. It seems I made the right choice, this does not sound like my kind of film.
but the other poster looks like the rosemary's baby trailer
I say it every week, but I love this segment so much!
I love Dan's movie reports aka charting with dan..
How about next week throw in the numbers for films shown in other countries as a fun kinda parallel? Would be cool to see if the same films do well in other places too or would have some bizarre ones.
I know you love your charts Dan and with this you could have even more!
Oh and i don't mean worldwide, like maybe German or Russian cinemas or something hehe.
Thanks for making this show screen junkies
This is so information. I also appreciate you guys keeping it clean!
Can we please go back to Charting with Dan in the title also not just the in the video? It sounds much better
I'm really missing Roth but I'm so happy that we are getting more Billy in the procces 👍🏼
Dan's comment on the September slate is pretty much how the Fall looks overall. It looks to be much better than the last half of Summer...
+ScreenJunkies News ,another great episode with +Dan Murrell charting the movies, and +Billy Business filling in nicely for Roth! Thank you for all the research and information about all the box office numbers, including commentary about the reviews. Good stuff! (: 'First Wives Club' was actually a very watchable and funny movie. Should not be surprised by it's success. And Dan nailed it about the phenomenon that was 'Crocodile Dundee'. My mom and close family friends were stoked to see it in theaters and could not wait to rent the video to see at home. My school and work friends also all went to see 'Crocodile Dundee' and quoted it endlessly! (I even wanted a similar "knife" to what the wonderful Paul Hogan (rip) had in that movie ,but settled on something more practical from my job at K-Mart just a bit later the next year. Still have that great legal sized Buck folding pocket knife.) The box office numbers since 'Beauty and the Beast' opened have been.. odd and exciting for smaller movies, like 'Get Out' and 'Girls Night'. Was blown away that 'Dunkirk' did so well, I was routing for it to find a big audience. Because I enjoyed seeing it and thought 'Dunkirk' might have enough merit for more people to get sucked into the tight tension that movie can produce. The wide success of 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' is not any surprise to me. It was marketed very well and the title character is just so popular and recognisable. Though a movie like 'Guardians of the galaxy pt.2' does not have the same cache (especially in markets like China and India). I'm plenty happy that the Pirates and Transformers franchises faded this year, the studios are just milking the titles for whatever money they can get and not making decent movies. +Hal Rudnik should have stayed with his prediction about 'IT' because that movie had so many people hoping that it would be good and worthwhile (which IT was). @DanMurrell you and +Roth Cornet promised to see 'Wolf Warrior' and 'Wolf Warrior 2' and tell us all about those movies. Now you need to research how the Chinese marketplace has inflated the box office numbers of those movies. Do what you have promised us,please.
"You know what's better than money? More money." - Dan Murrell, 2017
True though, isn't it?
Seriously, I know people who told me about theatres in China recording other movie ticket sales as Wolf Warrior 2.
eg) You buy Spider-man Homecoming and the printed ticket says Wolf Warrior 2 but the employees tell you it's ok to go watch Spider-man Homecoming.
That makes sense cause that's an insane gross for one country i thought how's that possible.
I never had an interest in charting before, but now I find it very interesting!! It's nice to see which movies flourish in the box office and worldwide! Thank you for all of the detailed information!!:)
No wonder IT is number 1 again in second week. Biggest horror box office opening. We saw IT on Saturday the 9th.
Rotten Tomatoes movie percentages are NOT scores. When will people get that?
Ironic since he made a whole video about it
I can't wait for Mother! but it premieres here in Czechia in half of october.
Man, I literally thought Mother! was such a good movie! I'm shocked how many people hated it. I think it's a great psychological horror movie! It's not your typical jump scare, it's allegorical and screwed up but so true to society and real and freaking TERRIFYING! I didn't sleep the night after watching it. My mind was reeling. It's a lot to unpack. Not for the faint of heart but honestly, I can't wait to see it a second time. It's the type of film that needs to be viewed twice.
I saw that trailer he was referring to, at the Alamo. It's intriguing but I will wait till it comes out on DVD/streaming.
Billy Business dropping the Hunted reference! Such a a good "Saturday morning movie."
I expected a different film when I went to see mother! I didn't totally hate it but the two people I went with nearly walked out. This is why I usually don't see films in their first week.
I went to watch American Assassin this past weekend as well and I agree, it was a slow film at first but the ending WOW was it great and I love that very last shot with the elevator doors.
Dan and Billy Business are a great combo! More of this please.
I loved First Wives Club, it's got a fun plot and great acting. It ranks up there for me in terms of fun things to watch on the weekend with Legally Blonde and My Cousin Vinny
Love these box office reports! Been Missing it ever since smhoe knows stopped doing it.
I saw that trailer during 'It' to come back next week for Mother. I made a mental note to not see it. Saw American Assassin though. Lol.
I appreciate you're view on critics and rotten tomatoes. It's refreshing to see and I'll be checking out more of your videos.
Dan:Summer 2017 box office has been horrible...
they announced mother at comicon along with the fountain.
One of the things that opening wide did for mother! was put it into the general conversation in a big way. It's still a long shot for a lot of Oscar buzz, but I think the broad conversation may help it get some acting/sound noms (The sound design was amazing). I think that it also changes the conversation surrounding Jennifer Lawrence who walks away from this looking like a serious actor, which is pretty necessary following the general backlash from Passengers.
I would love to watch the Directors Cut of IT in theaters
This and Movie Fights are totally awesome! my fave shows on the channel
Put JTE on the show! He rocked Box Office Breakdown!
IT was great. It made me get the book on Audible, 45 hours long listening time lol
There have been about 8 novels about Mitch Rapp. They are on every rack in every store. But I had no idea this was a Rapp story. Why was this ignored by the movie marketing?
Charting with Dan!!!
Why did it cost 30mil dollars to make a movie with 4 actors and a baby not set in space?
I'm 13 and I love the first wives club (I found it on a VHS and was bored so I watched it, it's a great movie)
wait didn't Friend Request come out already
description says roth not billy
Nailed it on marketing. That's why I'm so happy it's spectacularly bombing. Correct on It Comes At Night too. It's not fair to horror fans. It's straight up false advertising.
You gotta get the normies in the theater somehow. And I guarantee that there are ppl expecting It when they saw those flims and came out awestruck and will probably be some of the next great filmmakers.
Mother! might be "bombing" but I think its impact is gonna be shown in 20 years when the teens who saw it today site it as a key inspiration in their work (whether critical or actual storytelling).
Mediocrity should not be heralded as a good thing. Hence the difference in rotten tomatoes scores.
blandness shouldn't be either, but Ant-Man has a high RT score so there you go...
Charts!
Were my Roth
Were Paramount supposed to market it as an arthouse film?
The Guardian had the most obnoxious article written about mother! today about the silly audiences disagreeing with the wonderful critics and that having a different interpretation from this particular critic will have him condescendingly tell you that you got it wrong. I completely agree with Billy and Dan that it was marketed terribly, but what baffles me is how many commentators and critics have turned to label wider audiences with the 'anti-intellectual' or 'lazy' or 'just didn't get it' label because it's not making box office returns or people just didn't like it. Many in the mother! is great camp seem to think that when other filmgoers are labelling it pretentious or not enjoyable that they are calling it bad, which is really quite silly. There are many pretentious films which are great or not enjoyable films which great, and others which are just a load of rubbish. I think it was a fine film albeit a very self important film, but I loved the tone and technical aspects of it, but it got ridiculous towards the end as Aronofsky seemed like he just wanted to shock the audience. I certainly got the metaphor/allegory and though I think it's great it's prompted such a wide interpretation and discussion, I don't think it was anything particularly new or profound but I liked the feeling that I got for the first three and a half acts and final act, as well as looking great and having great performances. But that's just my opinion, whatever the next person feels is perfectly valid.
Pretentious is a derogatory term
TheVideoInvader How so? I'm genuinely curious, as I've never thought of it in that way before.
What does pretentious mean to you?
Also, there is a RIGHT and WRONG way to watch certain film. this is dictated by expectation, viewing habits, etc. Learning HOW to watch a film goes a long way with learning how to address it. You still may not like it, but It's important to consider what the film's point is and approaching it from that level.
It's too expensive to go to the cinema for ok medium movies, only exceptional, the rest we will catch later.
Or at least interesting. Kong: Skull Island wasn't great, but i enjoyed it and it had perspective.
Yeah, and the obvious ones like Kong and Marvek movies...
First Wives Club is a phenomenal film.
Marketing and release strategy for mother! was a mess
Pro-mother!, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't even more fascinated by the idea of a studio trying to split a film evenly between it and Transformers.
They marketed "The Village" as a horror movie about a creature in the woods... and half way through that movie you find out that it's not about that at all. And so when I left the theater I hated that movie and immediately criticized the marketing.
Jack Shipley I just watched the Village again last night. I love it, but I did miss the marketing entirely so I can see how that might affect your impression.
Dan said literally everything Grace Randolf said yesterday...
Beauty and the beast, the number one movie of the year. Im waiting for Star Wars the Last Jedi and Lucas Film to see that and say "hold my beer"
Why would they? Disney owns Star Wars so whoever gets number 1, Disney wins.
The reason American Assassin's score was so low probably has to do with the actual lead being about as charismatic as an actual rock.
best title ever !!!
"Next week we have three white releases." Sounds about right.
It’s not Roth Cornet, it’s Billy Paterson!
Dan's the man!
Darren Aronofsky doesn't make mass audience movies... am I wrong? Noah made a lot of money, but I think it tapped into the Christian movie market. And we've seen that audience prop up some no-good-movies. If anyone thought he would make a horror-movie-with-a-twist they haven't seen many (any?) of his movies.
black swan made over 300 mil worldwide. He got hits tho.
I haven't stopped thinking about Mother! since I watched it 2 days ago.
A little bit of Monika this is my question though, what about the audience who have no idea about Christianity and it's myths? We wouldn't understand any of the metaphors 🙃
Literally just got home like 20 min ago from seeing it. Had the theatre to myself. Still processing...
SUOJI CHAYIN None of what you said invalidates the opinion, that the movie was pretentious, or masturbatory. If you didn't think it was, you have the right to your opinion. But, so does everyone else.
Same
T H actually it is about religion, or more accurately the Bible. That's from Aranofsky himself.
Will screen junkies go to Universal horror nights?
Will * +Screen Junkies go to Universal Studios Resorts * Halloween Horror Nights * ? *
Kingsman - 45 million
Lego Ninjago - 39 million
IT - 22 million
American Assassin - 6 million
Friend request - 3 million?
Mother! cost 30 million?!? No wonder Paramount is doing the worst they've ever done financially in decades! There was no reason to spend that much and think it's going to turn a profit! Like usual Dan you taught me something I didnt realize in my know it all movie loving history: Fatal Attraction was nominated for Best Picture?! I knew Glenn Close and Anne Archer were for actress and supporting actress, but Best Picture? I always think of that film as "classy" sex trash for parents on a Saturday at the movies in '87! Then again it was the first big budget one of those 'Michael Douglas bangs a crazy blonde' films! lol
15 million was Lawrence's salary alone, so there goes half the budget. Paramount was hoping that the boxoffice draw of Lawrence will be enough, that's why they gave her so much money. For sure other studios won't rush to give her 15-20 million per movie anymore.
Who doesn't want to see full on keeton lol
They needed Danzig to do the soundtrack.
Well said guys. Mother bombed. Actually walked out around the time where they were passing the baby around. Not really into the "art" movies, especially not this one.
Rumor is it cost far more then 30 million to make Mother.
68% is still a fresh rating.
hell yeah It Movie I 😍 love It Movie 2017
Dan's off on It Comes at Night. Yes, it's sub-textual and dramatic, but at it's core it's a psychological horror film.
13:06 Disappointed by Dan not making a pun about Get Out "getting out" of he top 10 box office numbers.
Why exactly is this not called "charting with Dan"?
Dan Charts!
I'm with you guys i'm really over this best vs. worst movie mentality! why can't things just be good or not great but enjoyable anymore? For me most of the movies I watch I walk away thinking that was really good/fun or meh it was okay and i'm going to guess i’m not the only one. Also I think ticket prices has to do with this mentality, not just internet culture, people don’t want to spend like 20 bucks on a movie they aren't sure about or might not blow their minds which I get. Hollywood should definitely always try to make the best films they can, but movies are also meant to be a form of escapism and a good movie does that just as well as the great ones.
Can't wait to see Ninjago!
Where's peta
Ben Stiller has been going through "midlife" crisis since at least "Keeping the Faith"
I think that Rotten Tomatoes should consider moving to a three point rating system instead the current two point one. Right now, it's either rotten or fresh, if they had a third "meh" option, I think it would help fix the issue with movies like Hitman's Bodyguard. They could give the "meh" movies half a point instead of a full one when calculating the score and I think that it would better gauge the critical response.
Kacey Marioghae i think if they added the Meh option, they would have to make the 'Not Fresh' rating sound harsher as to give a wider range of satisfaction for audiences to judge movies
i like the host team up..
mother really bombed?? My theater was packed lol guess cause im in a major city ?
Thor 2 also had certified fresh taken away
Good
Time will tell x'P
I'm really tempted to watch Noah today. It sounds so weird, I just want to know
It's really strange and entertaining. Think of it as a biblical sci-fi movie that pays homage to Ray Harryhausen
I enjoyed it, great acting & effects, decent story. It really works if you think of it in a Lord of the Rings context rather than as something remotely connected to world history
I went into Mother! expecting something so different then what I got. But either way I really liked it, probably because I am in that category that loves horror but also arthouse films. But they shouldnt have ever marketed this movie this way, or released it in wide directly, HUUGGEEEEEEEE mistake. This is a good movie to have arguments about afterwards and you will only know if you actually love it or hate it after like 3-4 hours (I think this is why it got an F). And it made for a fun movie-going experience, I saw people just hiding in the gory parts and stuff like that, plus this was really funny because NO KIDDING, at the end of the screenings there was Booing (which I had never seen ever in my life, maybe this is an American thing but Idk) and Clapping and Cheering (had only seen this like once in my life during a movie) it was so weird.
Depends what state your in. For people reacting like that.
I liked Mother! I recommend you see it if you like weird films. It was a very well made and engineered allegory on faith, religion, God and all that. It could have been better if it were longer. Regarding the marketing, I don't think anyone would have been enticed to see it if it was marketed as an allegory about God.
Don't reduce a film's meaning to an author's interpretation. It can be many things (I can't wait to see it, but I HATE that Arronofsky keeps telling ppl what these characters represent).
Dan is spot on about the average movies! They both weren't great but watchable and somewhat enjoyable films. They deserve better scores on rotten tomatoes
I did hate It comes at night.
Friend Request was out last year its on dvd and Blu-ray
Not a good hold? It's the 21st BEST SECOND WEEKEND of ALL TIME. That's a BEYOND STELLAR HOLD.
I was hoping for scoops mcgee
7:53 Oh dear, Dan. Sympathising with mediocrity is never a good thing.
2:55 How is “average, but good” better than “extremely divisive”? Why do people cry for original filmmaking and cry again when they get exactly that?
Why is rotten tomatoes considered the be-all end-all
I didn't even know Mother! existed until the reviews started coming out, but it's getting a lot of buzz right now so I'd say it might become a cult hit eventually.
Warner Bros is having a great year so far except for King 👑 Arthur
