Mea culpa, I made a mistake by saying The Emoji Movie opened at #1 - it came in just behind Dunkirk and opened at #2. Oops! Hope you enjoy regardless - thanks for watching!
Dan Murrell a bit rusty haha
Dan Murrell I don't know if I can get past this mistake. I may never forgive you.
Eh, I'm past it.
Charts AND use of Latin? Clearly geared towards specific audience :) (and I consider myself included in that audience)
Dan Murrell do you get paid to do this ? Kinda a dream job 😁
How poetic that a movie prominently featuring the number 19 opens with $19M at the box office and a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.
You own the comm section with this line, dude.
Benjamin Abramowitz holy shit!!!
O_O You've opened my eyes!!!!
I'm so happy Baby Driver made it up there Domestically
Without a doubt, the best summer movie that I have seen this year,
Justin Mallon Especially when you look at his other films this one did wonderfully at the box office
I thought it was just ok. Very overrated.
That's what almost every Steven King book and movie is
Justin Mallon EW is sure a great director
As a fellow chart-guy, support Dan's chart segments.
I am Enraged by your choice of Photo
Tommy D The only choice for reputable people
People give RT too much credit. If people want to see a movie, they'll see it regardless of reviews.
I went to see BvS on opening preview night. Sadly RT was right and I wasted time and money
But this show isn't RT...
I think the amount of people who don't understand how RT works is too damn high. But yeah, going to the movies are expensive so I do check my favourite youtube reviewers first and then maybe RT score. But I have learned which reviewers my tastes line up with the most so I know whether I'm gonna enjoy a movie or not.
Dan, I've always enjoyed your breakdown of the box office numbers. Having Roth there as well is a great addition. Both of you have a great voice in the industry. Keep it up!
"Love it when you chart Dan" I agree
Keep doing the Box Office Report on this channel! I love breaking down the numbers!
A dark start for the dark tower
As a research scientist I had a total freakout because I LOVE NUMBERS! DO ALL OF THE NUMBERS! I LOVE THIS SERIES!! MORE PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
I love these two on screen together.
So happy to have Dan and his charts back! Loved Summer Movie Report, Dan's Labyrinth, and now this. Thanks for giving us numbers nerds something to look forward to!
I just wanna thank roth and dan for their amazing insights! Your effort and work and intelligence is much appreciated guys:)
Keep it up Dan! Love these breakdowns and love you!
Please keep doing these Charts/Box office Report! I'm a big fan!
I really like that you waited until Monday to do this. It has always really bothered me to see headlines about box office winners/losers on a Sunday morning. I used to think I had the definition of weekend wrong.
Charts, Charts, Chartschartscharts, Charts, Charts.
I just noticed the Alien and Predator as Beauty and the Beast behind Dan. 😂
Easter egg :)
Alaunt2009 The first I saw it, I died lol
"Charting with Dan" reminds me of that Al Roker confession...
CHARTS! CHARTS! CHARTS! CHARTS! CHARTS! CHARTS!
Whoo hoo! Gettin my chart fix. This better be a feature every week!
Love the charts! Make it a weekly thing, please.
I love chart shows! Please keep on posting them, it's interesting to analyze this information
I love watching box office reports. Hope you keep this show going.
I love your charting Dan, keep it up.
Loving charting with Dan! Can't wait for more
Love that we're still getting a steady dose of Dan's charts!
People need to be fired at sony
Charts!🙌 I've been jonesing for these box office breakdowns since Dan's Lab ended. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank god Dan is back with the charts. I was missing "Summer movie report" this year. Please continue this "Box office report", you've got a viewer.
Really enjoying the numbers/charts-driven topics, this video & the one about Netflix & the streaming platform industry have had some really interesting conversations for me.
I'm glad that Dunkirk is doing well financially, especially in America, it's a part of history that isn't so readily taught in the US and is generally a British story and an incredible true story of bravery and survival that everyone should learn about.
Love when Dan and Roth talk Box Office! One of my favorite things on this channel! I think when all is said and done Dunkirk will move into the number 5 spot. Girls Trip will take number 9 spot may go even higher because as of right now it's trending a little below Bridesmaids which ended its domestic run with $169 million.
More Dan charts!!!!!! One of the best parts of my Plus membership!
Loved this. :) keep them coming!!
I love that you are doing this please continue.
Crunch all the numbers!!
Love the breakdown! I say, keep em coming!
I need Dan to give me all the numbers!
Instead of hiding the films from the critics because you think there'll be bad reviews make films that will get good reviews
Thank you, Dan! Miss Dan's Lab.
I really like box office talk, please let this a thing.
Hey Dan and Roth!!! So glad to see box office report come to Screen Junkies News (loyal screen junkies plus member here). I love seeing these weekly when it was Summer Movie Report. And of course love seeing Movie Reviews as well. So hoping this will stick around as summer winds down and looking forward to more reviews and hopefully just more good movies to see instead of "meh" movies.
The charts return!!
Chart away Dan, Chart our hearts
I loveeeee box-office reports!
Yay Dan Charts are back! I love the Box Office Report, Great video guys, now I'm curious to see those Wolf Warrior movies
So, rather than just making better movies, studios are just going to try to silence critics? Great.
I love number crunching!
Box Office Reports PLEASE!
definitely keep doing this!
"Dan makes the charts, that makes him captain."
"No, that just makes you Chart Man."
Charting with Dan is quite interesting.
I'm looking forward to next month, I'm intrigued to find out what the numbers on IT are going to be.
Can 'Charting with Dan' become a weekly show please
The only thing better than dan charts, are dan rants. I LOVE dan rants.
Really cool charting and chating :') Keep it up \m/
I love this segment!
Great Job!
Ah, Dan's talking charts on a Monday afternoon, all is right in the world.
Can someone please photoshop a picture of Dan and Andy into a poster of planes, trains and automobiles and replace the title with Charts, Rants and Championships?
Jan Stankiewicz I dig it
Detroit came out on the 50th anniversary of the event.
Keep this up I love dans charts!
YEAHHH DAN CHARTS!!!!!!
very interesting video dan. Please make more like it
I was soooo hyped for TDT. Man was I underwhelmed
I love the charts and numbers!
Emoji movie opened #2 behind Dunkirk, not #1
Hope you continue these every week!!! At least let dan finish out the summer but you should do these every week. Miss summer movie report.
I don't even go to theaters anymore and haven't for years. I generally see the movies on Redbox or Netflix and there isn't much on this summer's list that I'm even looking forward.
I guess this is the closest we'll get to a spiritual successor to Dan's Labyrinth.
Keep them coming Dan
I feel like Dan should be wearing one of those green accountant caps for this. Great video, numbers are fun. What are your predictions for the Bumblebee spinoff movie?
Charts!!!! I love it!
Well the chart says...
my takeaway,,,, i wanna see see Wolf Warrior 2.... and 1 i guess :D
Now that Dan Charts has made its debut we only need a Dan Rants show, what's wrong with the world today Dan?
Love these charts.
Thanks for the charts. I didn't mean to yell. You always treat me so nice
@ScreenJunkies I love it
I have been following Box Office Mojo since 2000, I love charts. Go charts! I want to see Chart Week! Chartnado! Bravechart!
I think the weaker domestic results come down to a couple factors all working together:
1. General franchise fatigue. Guardians 2 avoided this because it was a well-received sequel that people were genuinely demanding, and Spider-Man was able to rebound from the Amazing films thanks to the MCU brand resuscitating interest. But when you open so many big-budget sequels within close proximity to one another, there are going to be some casualties (including War for the Planet of the Apes, which suffered in spite of its positive critical/audience reception).
2. Weak reviews and word of mouth. In many cases it really does help when your film is actually good and receives the buzz to match. Not necessarily a guarantee for success (it didn't help Detroit this weekend), but it certainly doesn't hurt to have word of mouth on your side.
3. The products feel stale. This is perhaps the biggest reason of all, I'd wager. In order to really hit it big at the box office your film has to do something to really distinguish itself and stand out. This can apply both to original fare and big franchise films, and the real successes of the summer (Wonder Woman, Guardians 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dunkirk, Girls Trip and Baby Driver) connected and clicked with audiences because they stood out amongst all the other tired underwhelming product as films that were worth going out to see in theatres. Their marketing effectively conveyed what set them apart from the rest and got people excited- they felt fresh and appealing. The many disappointments and failures of the summer may have suffered from a crowded marketplace and bad reviews, but those two things won't necessarily kill a film at the box office. The biggest reason for their failures was an inability to stand out as something worth seeing rather than something they'd already seen before.
we love it dan keep on doing the charts
A chart idea I think would be cool would be the domestic box office revenue over the past, say, 10 years. This could probably bring about some interesting discussion on the current trends of the box office. Maybe have that historian that was on Dan's Lab back on to put the current trends in a broader historical context.
so glad we have charts back!!!!
Dan Murrell does a good job 😁
I actively tried to see Detroit this weekend but the stupid theatre didn't have a showing that they scheduled. bummed me out
Love the charts, Dan! I'd be interested in seeing charts for trends over time too. How the industry is evolving, so to speak. For example, how are franchises/sequels growing compared to indie movies in the past 5-10 years? Are more people going to the theater in general each summer? Etc.
Another interesting topic would be diving further into the global box office. Which countries, if any, are likely to see global successes like China in the coming years?
Love the box office breakdown....now lets get JTE on here!
Here is what fans of the Dark Tower wanted. They wanted 7 movies encompassing the seven books. We don't want this rehash BS .
My friend is a huge fan of the books. We went to see it and he liked it.
I love when dan chart. Keep it up the great work
Wasn't listening to what they were talking about, was just watching Roth and thinking loads of stuff with her
dem charts tho
When talking about great Stephen King openings, what about The Shawshank Redemption?
Why do you list the worldwide box office as just "international"? International box office is everywhere in the world apart from US & Canada whereas worldwide is everywhere
Shame about the movie, it could have been amazing
Miles S. What makes it worse is that it could have started a multi movie franchise. (Unless Sony gets desperate and makes a second)
surprise, Detroit didn't do well. Imagine that, people didn't want to see a miserable movie.
With China owning AMC Theaters i find it hard to believe that movies from there have not made it into American theaters, especially if they do well Internationally
I think the point you guys made about the Chinese films doing well over here is valid. There is a film called "Reset" that did well at the Huston film festival staring Wallace Huo that was produced by Jackie Chan. While the CGI is a little clunky, I liked it but Rotten Tomatoes has it at a half and half. I think we may start seeing more of this and it's be awesome if you guys did some kind of segment reviewing some of the other foreign films that come into the US for some of the festivals.
I wanted to watch DETROIT & GIRLS TRIP this week but the screenings are REALLY limited near me. Detroit for example is only on at 1 out of 4 of my local cinemas & only on 1 screen, once a day
