@@AnimalLover101195 i watch sju right after my lunch, and this / movie fights during my dinner too! love those time zone differences
Bad Times so far is my favorite movie this year. It is a bit of a shame that it didn't do so well, but I am glad I didn't miss it
I’m crushed about Bad Times. I really loved it and surprised because my screening was nearly sold out.
I love Charting with Dan (and usually Roth, but sometimes Lon).
The supposed controversy of First Man and its flag planting, as well as one moment where you referred to the weekend's numbers as "American Box Office" reminds me of a point that always interests me.
Canadian Box office numbers are always buried inside the "Domestic" numbers. It seems odd, but its quite hard to find separated numbers for an entire Country, let alone its regions. We have a different currency, a large Francophone community and we have some different cultural sensibilities. All of which could change the outcome of various box office results. Add to that, the fact that some movies don't have the same distribution up here as they do in America (mostly an issue with Streaming, to be honest, but I know that Goon released here months before its little run in the US).
For example, when discussing First Man with some friends, none of them brought up the flag issue. We are aware of it, because a lot of our news sources are American, but we just couldn't care less about that particular prop. On the other hand, a lot of conversation centered on Ryan Gosling, since he is one of the many attractive Ryan's we've supplied to Hollywood.
Perhaps, on a future week, when there isn't an obvious topic to cover, it would be fun to dig in to the region specific numbers. It might be hard to obtain, but I can imagine that places like Utah could have vastly different turn outs for certain movies than New York or Florida. Likewise, I'd love to see a break down of how movies by Denis Villeneuve (I love listening to you guys try to say French names, its hilarious) perform in Quebec, as opposed to elsewhere.
Just some thoughts. Keep making the show, its one of my favorites.
Americans are still fighting among themselves over the players kneeling in the NFL, the "outrage" around the American flag not being planted doesn't surprise me. It's the era of American nationalism, so anything that doesn't over celebrate America is an insult to the country.
Personally, First Man was a miss for me. As a huge fan of the Apollo program, I found the movie lacked the engineering aspect of the space race. Moreover, Armstrong was an engineer first and foremost, something the movie failed to portrait at all accounts. It also showed Armstrongs as far more isolated that what he was according to written and voice-recorded records, which disappointed me. The guy had a very dry Scottish humour that not everyone understood at times. And, of course, the Apollo 1 fire was nothing short of a joke in the way it was portrait in the movie.
At the end, I know they tried to romanticize him as well as the space race, because that's the Hollywood thing to do. But, I think they missed a fantastic chance to shed some light on a very complex individual that overcame a lot while becoming responsible for uttering the most famous words in modern history.
Glad venom is still doing okay, better than I expected even :D Sad that El Royale didn't even make the top 5 though. I really liked that movie!
Glad Venom is doing well at the box office. I think the fact they got Venom right and they incorporated some of the Lethal Protector-Planet of the Symbiotes story arc drew interest.
Millions of Symbiotes out there.😨😨
You get a cg symbiote, and you get a cg symbiote!!
Already bored with the sequel.
Get out of my internet
Nop. What drew interest was Tom Hardy and his banter/relationship with the Venom symbiote.
@@trylobyte07
Agree 100%!
Remove Tom Hardy and his Eddie-Venom relationship, the way it developed and the banter arising from all that, and the rest falls apart!
The Eddie-Venom relationship and the action saved the movie for me, I really enjoyed it, but everything else around that was really piss poor!
Watched Venom last week, a lot of fun. Enjoyed it. Saw A star is born yesterday, in a theatre with dolby atmos. Wonderful music, both leads were great. Some people were crying at the end. Great experience.
i’ve been looking forward to this all weekend!
@SJU I'm just going to leave here a suggestion that would help a lot of us viewers: put in the Description of the videos some timestamps for the themes/discussions that you talk about. It's easier to find the things we want to view as well as to find where we were when we can't view everything at once ;) Keep up with the great work! Love from Portugal.
I'm anxiously anticipating Bohemian Rhapsody although I am a little nervous about some of the historical inaccuracies I've heard about but I love Queen and Freddie Mercury so as long as the performances are good-I'm in. Rami Malek looks fantastic in the clips I've seen.
Bad times was great. Walked home in front of some guys who were raving about Cynthia Erivos singing, Lewis Pullmans Myles and the twists and turns in the movie and it filled me with joy. Super sad no one went to see it
I know Venom wasnt an objectively good movie as such but i did enjoy it.

They are dumb turds out there..

I'm glad that Venom is doing so well but not surprised that A Star is Born is holding on.
An Oscar is Born is slaying.
I'm itching to watch so many of these movies once they hit the theatres here
Watched 'Bad times at the El Royale' yesterday, great movie!!!

I remember watching Halloween in theaters, so much fun!
LOL good opening line Roth. Edging in on Dan's pun-opoly there :P
ScreenJunkies recommendations are on point, I went and watched the Bad time at El Royale and it's an amazing movie. First Man is a great movie too but sad to see not doing well at box-office. No good movie releases this week, so I'll probably watch Venom for second time or man up and go for Star is Born. Thanks to AMC-stubs a-list!!
Halloween comes out this weekend, but I think it's the only big release
+Justin Clowater i think thats why he said no "good" movie releases this week lol
@@mk6rfc1 Halloween holds a Metacritic score about twice as large as Venom' s actually.
+Jeremy Bocquet I was talking about how the OP didn’t include Halloween as like myself probably doesn’t care about that movie
@@mk6rfc1 Then say that. That's totally acceptable. The actual quality of the movie is already better otherwise.
Wait. Someone was genuinely mad about them not SHOWING the PLANTING of the flag? I'm pretty sure that it shows the flag as they are leaving anyway. So why? Why?
First Man isn't even playing at my Local Theater. Sometimes they get films late though because it's small and they don't always have room for everything.
I don't think First Man will have very long legs, considering the competition upcoming. I think it will fade into the ether and ultimately be forgotten.
Nah, I'd bet it'll pop back up come Oscar season. I would be surprised if it didn't get nominated for something.
I agree. I already forgot it
I'm not surprised that First Man is not doing well. I don't really understand why they made it into a boring family drama when the events around it are one of the most exciting and important moments in the history of mankind.
The controversy surrounding First Man probably hurt the viewership.
Definitely didn’t help. A controversy which is ridiculous imo
Stupid controversies.... isn't that basically our current era in a nutshell
My mother has made some snide remarks over the film, despite the fact that the source she got the "controversial news" from, said that they were gonna see the film for themselves. lol. she probably wouldn't see it any time soon because of a tight budget, but I don't know why folks can't just see things before they judge.
I didn't see the film because of it. The anti_american agenda is not funny anymore
I saw it and enjoyed it and there is plenty of patriotism in it. The idea anyone could possibly watch it and see anything anti American is beyond me.
I watched Vintage Space's review of First Man. She loves space, and NASA, and is pretty much a historian of it. According to her knowledge of Armstrong, the criticism of Armstrong's personality as depicted in the movie, are valid.
This might be a random question, but do you guys know if ticket sales from military base movie theaters add significantly to total box office numbers? I live overseas and our base movie theater sells tickets for $4 (sometimes even less). Just curious :]
First Man was amazing! Its has been a while since I saw a movie the first weekend it came out. This film gave me more respect for Neil than I already had in the first place.
0/10 revisionist be sure they left out the U.S. flag being planted
@@kennywnorthkennorth6579 I felt that the scene with him saying his final goodbye to his daughter was more appropriate for the tone the movie had already established. The movie is about what Neil dealt with prior to landing on the moon.
@@DiabloBiscuit they easily could have added both
Bad Times at the El Royale is awesome!
Does the general public prefer seeing entire plots in the trailer? Venom, Star is born vs first man...
I want to agree with you, but I have to make an exception with First Man. I reckon we all know the plot of that movie
I saw Beautiful Boy at TIFF and I really liked it. Go out and see Roth.
Charts!
You guys need to do "Mandy" and "Assassination Nation" reviews in your roundup. I actually wish you would do full spoiler reviews for those.
My housemates and I watched Halloween last night as well. I at one point paused it and was instructing my housemates about how important the movie is and ending up feeling very much like Randy in Scream
I just saw el royale and I saw it after hearing your guys review.. quite surprised you guys liked it so much! Well acted... beautiful... slightly tone deaf? Definitely too slow. I dno I’m surprised
I feel bad to live in a world where Venom makes more than First Man, and Bad Times at El Royale.
Herman Falck How I don’t. First Man was boring and Bad Times was great but not for everyone.
It’s always weird seeing people say bad things about the general population because what’s popular doesn’t appeal to them
Really hoping to be able to see A Beautiful Boy in the UK. The trailer looked enticing and Timothee Chalamet is very much going to burst onto the widespread scene soon.
First man had all the ingredients to be great. And It's just fine. We should all assume that the sooner the better.
A Star Is Born isn't even out in our market yet (New Zealand) so if same for other regions it has quite abit of money yet to make especially if it grabs awards.
Also there is an almost guaranteed patronage by Lady Gagas 'Little Monsters'. Do you think with Lady Gaga getting lots of attention for her work that other celebrities with large fan communities such as Taylor Swift may be encouraged to jump into lower budget movies - ie the return of the fan films of the Elvis and Beatles era?
I had a feeling that First Man might not do well financially as soon as I left the screening. It's not an uplifting film in the classic sense and Armstrong is not very likable in the film. It's a hard sell even for Gosling and Chazelle fans.
And it's inaccurate so everyone knew history buffs would not like it because they would nitpick, and no flag so no patriotic enthusiasm nor is there a longstanding series so yeah
Holy crap, I just checked Rotten Tomatoes, Halloween has an 86%! I was expecting like a 30%, considering every other sequel in that franchise.
Go at 'em venom! x'j
Hey UA-cam, why you make this video so damn hard to find?
OUR THOUGHTS EXACTLY
Where is the review for Bad Times at Rl Royale?
they did that weeks ago
Hunter Casey they mentioned it on SJU News, but they never did a dedicated review
its 13:46 long, from 2 weeks ago posted. It's an in depth review and they both recommended it. Check it out and scroll though or type it into youtube
I like the title first man first fails to lunch
Im not going to see First Man because I don't get why they would tell this story. We know going to space was risky, we know it was dangerous, we know there were sacrifices, and we know they did it.
I generally don't like movies that are too predictable, but this is a movie where I literally know that anything bad that happens to Neil ends up being worth it before the movie even starts.
Apologize less, Roth :)
Halloween might make IT money
Whiplash is a top 10 film of mine. First Man was a great follow up from Chazelle.
Bad At Times At the El Royale... could have told you the box office results just based on the name.
12:14 That’s a letter mate.
i cant believe that venom has made 377 mil. its already in the top 300 highest grossing movies
Here is my question about Venom.... How so cheap? It requires tons of cgi and while not the best it is pretty good. My concern here is when looking at the credits we have for visual effects lots of Indian names. So is Sony going overseas to pay lowest amount possible and exploiting workers to make its budget? If so... Is this something we consider okay? Is it just part of global economy and we endure it? Or is it something that should change? Or does it even hurt anyone? I don't know the answer but I would like to see the conversation.
The other problem that “First Man” has working against it is: It is TOO DAMN LONG AND TOO SLOW!!! It’s a drama first, & runs TWO HOURS & 21 MINUTES!!!
could "A Star is Born" be the Fall season's "The Greatest Showman"? because if it performs like Greatest Showman then they have both a hit, and an awards contender, and most movies manage to be one or the other
Nope. Greatest Showman was an anomaly. A drastic increase and continuing small drops never happens. We can't just say every movie with good legs is The Greatest Showman. Because what happened there won't happen again for quite a long time.
Caridad Chang nope, while The Greatest Showman was released as an awards season contender, when it opened it completely flopped at the box office but got legs because the audiences everywhere loved it (every song on the soundtrack is certified gold in the UK)
Well, the good news for First Man dissappointing: A deep character drama that no one saw? That vastly increases its chances to win Best Picture lately, doesn't it? I know, cheap shot, but... the truth hurts. Also, I third the motion: go see Whiplash.
ASIB soundtrack is handled by Gaga's label, Interscope.
Whos playing Stanley Kubrick in First Man?
Just saw First Man. The "American Flag" controversy is overblown. They show the American flag in the movie standing up next to the LEM and they also show the "UNITED STATES" moving past the screen on the side of the Saturn V rocket which seemed to take forever. They also show the entire world rejoicing at the accomplishment of America and let it be known that 400 million people all over the world watched live. What I really didn't like was the Cinematography. The shaky shoulder mounted cam and the weird close ups on the side of actor's faces so you can see stubble growing on top of their stubble. The weird jump zooms and unnecessary movement of the camera took me out of the movie.
why dislike video Roth in it so is Dan lol
Bad Times at the El Royale flopping is a shock to me. What happened to Chris Hemsworth's star power?
star power?? all hes movies that aent thor movies have flop
emanuel sosa I saw the movie because Chris was in it
Whomver said Hemsworth (any of Hemsworth ) had "star power" doesn't know shit.
?? Did he ever have any? I'd put more power behind John Hamm or Jeff Bridges.
First Man suffers from the negative news about the flag posting on the moon as well as the fact this film was late in trailer promotions. This film was not promoted in the right way unlike Apollo 13 or The Martian.
mythdusterds I agree. I never heard about it until really late ha
I wanted to see all Halloween honest trailer including zombie versions
my chart is sunday
Anyone who hasn’t watched Venom needs to stay for the second after credits scene... it’s like 3 and a half minutes long.
All hail Dongacles!
I feel sorry for the people that refused to buy a Venom ticket because critics convinced them not to....strong sign of mental weakness...judge it for yourself.
you got that right.
maybe they just don't have the time or money lol. you've got to be kidding me
Lol, "refused to buy a ticket" rather than "weren't inticed by the trailer". I opted to stay at home and groan my way through Titans than go see Venom. Can't wait for Glass to come out, now that has had spectacular trailers.
Err, but literally the point of reviews (I'm distinguishing it from criticism here) is to give you an independent source of information on if you should go to a movie?
I went to Venom sort of on the recommendation of Dan and Roth and didn't like it much (mostly found it boring). I found that pretty surprising, as I've generally enjoyed both their recommendations before. But whatever, there wasn't much out and wanted to try the new theatre that just got finished here, so no biggie.
@@SimonBuchanNz my point exactly....but at least you judged it for yourself good or bad is your call👍
El Royale > First Man > A Star is Born
8:40
“Do you think that played into it?” She asked naively.
Is she aware of the Internet?
You see why it’s not there?
....I’m intrigued.
Why does this say “view two replies” but I only see one when I click?
Dan I hope Gosnell is one of the small film you review with beautiful boy. While much of the acting was network tv level, Earl Billings gave the creepiest performance I have seen in years.
A Star Is Born is a flawed gem.
Just got back from seeing First Man with the rest of my non-American family. Unlike myself, they rarely go to the cinema so I think it's unfair to say there'd be little interest in this story outside the US. Hidden Figures was also very popular here. We all thoroughly enjoyed the film but we had one issue, the cinematography. The overuse of shaky-cam & the poor contrast which made many shots appear as a blank screen left a bad taste in our mouths & caused a little motion sickness in some. In a film aimed at an older audience these will be deal breakers for many & will be the focus of the word of mouth reaction. It's sad that a film so powerful & authentic will likely fall flat as a result.
I hope the flag controversy doesn't impact the film. I wasn't aware of it until you mentioned it & as a foreigner I can assure concerned Americans the film is plenty triumphal enough without a self congratulatory slow-mo flag planting
Second?
It's not surprising that First Man is not a huge box office draw. It may be produced by Spielberg, but it's more of a character piece than the crowd pleases he specialized in. There's little awe or wonder because we're almost always in the astronauts shoes, cramped in little capsules........
The Star is Born backlash has already arrived. That said I did hear a very good argument that the gender politics of it are kind of messed up. Basically they said that Jackson is emotionally manipulating her and without saying what happens (though it's the same as the other versions) the ending sends an awkward message about where Ally is left.
For me, I thought Star is Born was ok but there probably will another movie down the road that I think will be more deserving of the big awards like Best Picture.
Though I liked First Man, I can see why it didn't draw much interest or get more than a B+ Cinemascore. It doesn't offer much beyond the nuanced performances and the space sequences (which are amazing, especially the moon landing sequence). I saw a group of people next to me all get up and leave halfway through the movie, obviously bored.
Ok so I watched Bad Royale this weekend and I’m sorry guys I didn’t think much of it at all.
The first 30-1hr mark I was quite enjoying the dialogue and they way it was moving forward it then fell and it was overdone with the acting and the scenes felt very drawn out.
I didn’t enjoy Chris Hemsworth in this film, i was sitting in the theatre with my partner and we were looking at each other like can this end already.
Also Cynthia Envo singing was done too much too.
I watched first man the day before and it felt like I watched something very great.
I was just disappointed in Bad times at the El Royale
I started watching Halloween also but then my phone alerted me the cram it was out so I shut it off
The original Halloween is indeed a classic. However, there is some very bad acting in that film. Especially from the other two babysitters to the point where I still can't decide which one was worse. The girl who says "Totally" a lot or the other one who does a lot of over the top whining. That being said. Donald Plesasence and Jamie Lee Curtis are great. And that final showdown with her and Michale is a real nail biter even to this day.
how many times they gonna tell the man on the moon story? until everyone believes its true?
For _First Man_, you actually lost me with "intimate family drama". Yeah, I don't want to see _August: Osage County_ with astronauts in the 60s. I'm not the audience for that.
Amuricans enjoy action movies, not snoozers.
I didn't like First Man at all. Should have just watched A Star is Born again.
First Man did better than Bad Times at least.
Joe McKim What do you have against Bad times at the el royal?
I loved the movie, but dude chill, Joe is literally only talking about the box office. Bad Times made like no money, feelbadman.
Dude I have nothing against Bad Times, actually intending on going to see it tomorrow.
Joe McKim sorry didn’t mean to be threatening just was wondering why you compared the 2 movies next to each other
I liked Beautiful Boy way more than I thought I would, I feel like I need to see it again which is not something i usually feel after watching a movie.
On the back of your recommendations I went to see El Royale. Boring as...... and very little pay off in the end. Also Venom is terrible.
Whiplash?
As I hear First Man is a snooze fest.
They should have just made a documentary instead of this film.
Cynthia Erivo was great.
more venom backtracking
Gaga vs. Venom?!
Is this...
Poetry?
This doesn’t surprise me. At all. People always complain that “there’s nothing original anymore” but yet almost every time there IS something original, nobody goes and sees it. Instead, everyone goes and sees the sequel, prequel, remake and/or reboot. And this time is just more proof. I mean, granted Venom looks pretty good and I am planning to see it, and I’m sure the A Star is Born Remake is actually great, but this just proves me right AGAIN that the sequel, prequel, remake and/or reboot just about always does better than the original film. And yet people ALWAYS get so pissy that there’s “nothing original anymore”. Such hypocritical dumbasses.
I think El Royal is original, but no one saw that.
The “nothing is original anymore” group is a vocal minority that your ascribing to larger populace. I’m willing to bet those people DID see it, just everyone else just doesn’t care
Saw 3 movies, and OMG Venom does not deserve this money. It was basic AF!! So forgettable.
Give your money to First Man and El Royale!!
Travis Spazz definitely
I'm not excited for Halloween :(
I was hoping for some great twist but instead I got Chris Hemsworth walking into the bad Royale whilst raining heavy with his beautiful body out.
I just don’t buy it and the whole cult like thing they decided to do in the film
TheBoxingChannel how do you “not buy it”?
When I called my parents and mentioned that they should go see First Man this weekend, my mom responded "God no! They disrespected the flag, that pisses me off!" So, yeah, I'd say the right-wing spin machine took a huge chunk out of that film's potential earnings, which is depressing as hell considering that the entire narrative about the flag is essentially a lie (it's very prominently shown on the moon).
Also, just want to jump in before the ASIB backlash bandwagon Roth predicted *really* kicks in, so *SPOILERS*: I think ASIB is a very pretty movie with great performances and a killer soundtrack, but it also has really bad pacing issues and a downright troublesome depiction of suicide. I 100% expect ASIB to receive the La La Land backlash in the long wait until Oscar season, during which a lot of great movies will come out to divert attention and there will be plenty of time for Gaga or (more likely) Cooper to get in some media trouble that the Academy will want to avoid.
I liked the acting was great in ASIB and I liked the songs. In particular The Shallows, but I didn't care for the storyline. And speaking of Beautiful Boy I thought that did a better job of humanizing an addict than ASIB did. I loved First Man though. One of the best films I have seen this year.
A Star is Born is new country melancholy. You’re sad, you’re drunk, you’re dead. At least the dog didn’t die too. The music is the best part and the music is just good for a movie. Listing to anything except The Shallows on that album is cringe. Imagine if Adele or Beyonce were singing those songs. I love Gaga but she is not an amazing vocalist; she’s a provocative artist. Cooper is neither. I wish Gaga would go back to wearing meat dresses.
This blind nationalism is making this country fall apart.
Patriotism isn't blind nationalism
EVOLUTIONARY LAKEMAN patriotism has been a part of this country since its inception. A friggin movie is not a sign that it is a bad thing
