    Dr. Sleep came out after Halloween, all that horror/spooky interest was out of season by the time of the release for a casual audience. It should have come out the week before Halloween and it would at least have a 1/3 more take

      Or release it in January, since this seems to have become the new "horror movie season". Give it some room to shine. But it also needed better marketing. I didn't even know about the movie until two or three weeks ago.

      Marketing is always blamed for a failure. Random cinema sequels is just not something people care about these days, not now that there's tv, where season 2 and on function often as sequels to a continued story.

      LMAO I didn't even look at it that way, good point XD Nah, every cat just has a 3-4 minute introduction song, not an actual character arc or anything, so that's how it won't be that long.

    Don’t underestimate the massive amount of kids that have been begging their parents to take them to Frozen 2 since the marketing started. For sure I’ll be taking my kids.

    • @johnsonjohnson3261
      @johnsonjohnson3261 4 роки тому +5

      It's funny because part 1 was almost half a decade ago. So kids that watched it then have grown up a bit. It's almost like a Toy Story phenomenon where the kids grow up with the series and check back every 5 to 10 years.

    • @sarasamaletdin4574

      It’s not just kids, there are ton of Disney fans and musical fans and people who were kids when Frozen came out but not anymore.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 4 роки тому +4

      Some kids have seen the movie only on home video. In any case, it has been an awful year for animation (for some reason the Frozen movies always get released in years where the other big studios aren't really up to snuff or don't release anything at all...the only truly good animated mainstream movie this year was HTTYD 3 and that was back at the very beginning of the year), so Frozen 2 has the red carpet laid out for it.

  • @lawnjart16
    @lawnjart16 4 роки тому +21

    The domesticated cat hails from ancient Egypt, and felines began traveling along maritime trade routes in ships that allowed them to visit different parts of the world. They soon began living in all corners of the Earth, and some cats, naturally, ended up joining the motley crews working aboard pirate ships
    I had to google this even before Lon stated to leave it in the comments

    • @cjwrench07
      @cjwrench07 4 роки тому +2

      lawnjart16 the *self* domesticated cat comes from ancient Egypt.
      We never domesticated cats like we did dogs, horses, cows, etc...
      Cats essentially domesticated themselves in Egypt around the time of the 1st Dynasty, long, long before the Arab “invasion” of the area. When they were the Pyramid-building Egyptians and were more genetically related to other Africans(especially the Central African Nubian Empire)

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 4 роки тому +2

      I already knew this because there is some Disney short about the history of the cats….

    • @pattheplanter
      @pattheplanter 4 роки тому +2

      We have some domesticated cat skeletons in human graves in Cyprus from 9500 BC, so those must have crossed the Mediterranean from Turkey (or the Levant/Iraq) with their humans. So the earliest domestic cats we know of certainly travelled in ships. Genetic evidence shows us that this is about the time that the domestic cat separated from the subspecies of wild cat called _Felis silvestris libyca._
      One Egyptian myth has the serpent of chaos Apep (or Apophis) obstructing the passage of the sunboat of Ra. Ra defeats Apep in the form of a cat. Or Bastet the cat goddess kills Apep on behalf of Ra. Though this myth would have been from after 1000 BC, the first certain Egyprian depiction of a domestic cat only being from 1600 BC. Though a cat skeleton was found in a human grave from 4000 BC.

    Lon, you feel like Charlie's Angels hasn't been marketed... cause it hasn't been marketed to you. They wanna pull in a young female audience, that's why they brought together 2 of the biggest names of pop music (and Lana Del Rey) to do a song together, got the girl everyone loved from the live action Aladdin and, of course, Noah Centineo. And all of the marketing has been done on the internet. I'm 25 and I've seen that trailer pop up at least 3 times a day on my instagram feed.

    Glad we got charts even if it was late, but I am sad you guys didn't talk a bit more about Midway considering the film had excellent word of mouth. If you look at Rotten Tomatoes and Cinemascore, you will find that even though the critical scores are middling, the audience scores on both sites were largely positive. I believe it has a 92% RT Audience score and an A Cinemascore. I think the film was also carried by a solid and fairly well known ensemble cast which included, Ed Skrein, Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, and Dennis Quaid. It would have been nice to see how it stacked up in terms of other films based on WWII battles (Dunkirk, Hacksaw Ridge, Fury, Enemy at the Gates).

    Something I haven't seen anybody mention is that one of the problems with waiting a long time for a sequel is that you now have an audience that is used to seeing a film a certain way. So take The Shining: I love The Shining, seen it a bunch of times, and I'm very excited to see Doctor Sleep. However, I have never seen The Shining on the big screen. Even though I love seeing movies at the theater and I know, in my head, that it would be a better experience, I've only ever watched The Shining at home in a specific setting. When I imagine myself watching Doctor Sleep it is in a similar setting.

    Great episode of "Charting" as always. I was looking up Stephen King adaptations, and I was surprised how many movie sequels he has - you could do an entire segment putting "Doctor Sleep" in context compared to "Creepshow 2," "It Chapter Two," "The Rage: Carrie 2," "Lawnmower Man 2," "Pet Sematary Two," an unexpected number of "Children of the Corn" sequels, etc. Most aren't based on a sequel book Stephen King wrote, though.
    "Doctor Sleep" could also be compared to the other Stanley Kubrick film to get a sequel, "2001" vs "2010."
    I loved the charts comparing sequels with a ten-year plus gap. No "Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles?" LOL
    I'm looking forward to a similar chart in the future that will have "Matrix 4" and "Bill and Ted Face the Music."

    The ONLY reason I thought there was a twist to "Last Christmas" is cus of you two!

    In my local theater, Midway played in a smaller seated auditorium than Dr. Sleep. I made a comment to the ticket counter cashier that I thought it was strange that was the case, as I had never heard anything about Dr. Sleep and it was Veterans Day weekend after all, so I expected that the movie would be in the largest auditorium at the theater. The cashier said that Dr. Sleep was put into the largest auditorium because they always put the big movies in that auditorium. Guess they were wrong about both movies.

    I just saw Doctor Sleep today and I thought it was really good so it saddens me that people aren’t seeing it. Like a few others pointed out I think it has to do with the marketing.

    This is sad to see, I just came out of theaters and I really loved Dr Sleep. Feels like generation gap is a huge factor here as well, a lot of my friends didn't even see Shining despite being huge movie fans, or even know a sequel exists. Hopefully next week they can shine!

    Did you know The Shaggy D.A. and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes are part of the same cinematic universe? Most took place at Medfield College, while The Shaggy D.A. takes place in the town of Medfield and implies the original, The Shaggy Dog took place there as well. Also, the villain from The Absent Minded Professor appeared in Herbie Strikes Again, adding The Love Bug series to the universe.

    Doctor sleep just didn’t hit marketing. Half the people I talked to about it said they haven’t heard of it but when I told them what it was and about the shinning they were taken back.

    Doctor Sleep doesn't deserve this. It was amazing, as was the book it's based on. This Christmas being weird, even if for the worst, makes it 85% more intense to me. Scream 4 was another one that deserved better

    I had the same problem with "Doctor Sleep" that I did with "The Shining"-they just gutted so much of the book. A lot of characters and character arcs are missing from Doctor Sleep especially the end. Because they wanted to get The Overlook into the movie they changed the entire end of the book and not for the better in my opinion. And for being abandoned for 40 years the grounds seemed in pretty good shape-I guess the ghosts were cutting the lawn. The performances are all great-Rebecca Ferguson was perfect as Rose The Hat and I really liked Ewan MacGregor as Danny. I'll see it again now that I know what to expect.

    After listening to you guys talk about cats every week, I'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around how all of these different characters come together, and how I can possibly come to care about so many different characters over the course of a single movie. It just sounds like the weirdest thing ever...

    The middle of Doctor Sleep was not as compelling as I would have liked, and it is all about setting up for the end, but BY the end, I was ready for it and I thought it was really good. The beginning "kept me there", the middle was necessary, the end was great. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I can see how it would not be for everyone.
