Best part of every Monday, Charting with Dan!
Me on Monday nights: *tries to go to bed at a normal hour*
Charting with Dan: *happens*
Me: well forget that
My gut saying Goti love is from Sceintology
Yeah, that scans. (as it were.)
That’s what I was thinking. Now I am curious how other recent Travolta and Cruise movies compare.
Chris Chinn Travolta's wife, Kelly, also co-stars and Travolta is a producer as well. This looks like a concerted effort from Scientology to support its remaining biggest stars at a time of ever growing scepticism against the cult
I have Sundays and Mondays off from work, so Monday evenings I get that feeling of ugh I have work tomorrow. But it also means that Charting with Dan is up!! Dan, Roth, and the rest of the SJU crew are some of the best and most well spoken movie news personalities on the web.
Thanks for all you do!!
These make my Mondays bearable.
Dan was semi-right about Wrinkle in Time. Join Fantasy Movie League, we have had the DDIE figured out for 2 years. What’s the DDIE? Disney Drive In Effect. Disney forced exhibitors to pair Incredibles 2 with A Wrinkle in Time. It played on 97 of 151 drive in screens with I2. The same thing happened 2 years ago when Alice Through the Looking Glass only dropped 23% when Finding Dory opened. Zootopia also gained 750% that same weekend. Disney Drive In Effect.
Yes Roth there is a giant group of die hard John Travolta fans cranking up the user rating for Gotti on Rotten Tomatos: They’re called Scientologists.
So many brand new accounts on Rotten Tomatoes rating and commenting.
They're also hitting up IMDB ratings, with more than a third of the ratings there being 10/10, another third being 0/10 and the remaining spread in between.
I love the new segment Who Done It And Why! My answers to the two mysteries are that the weird amount of user ratings for Gotti has something to do with Scientology. For A Wrinkle In Time I've heard that Disney attached it to Incredibles 2 as a double feature in drive in theaters. They are trying to get it over $100M because it looks better for them and also Ava DuVernay would become the first Black Female Director to join the $100M club.
I think it's simply marketing. You can actually buy ratings for imdb or rottentomatoes online, I think the studio realised that rotten can have a big effect on the movie, so they bought a couple thouey positive ratings.
Even if that did happen which it didn't, it certainly didn't help it's reviews much considering the film only has a 39% Rotten Tomatoes score. There isn't enough buying in the world to take a film from 39% to a fresh rating of 60%, stop making up stuff.
What do you mean? If only a few people saw a movie, even if they score it very low, a couple thousand bots can score it up quite significantly.
As far s audience scores go, that's true. But nothing is changing critics scores, that's set on what film critics give it. Same thing with Metacritic, but audience scores can always be different based on those dots that mentioned.
Mondays are tolerable due to this show alone!

*refresh* OH THANK THE GODS!
At my home town, A Wrinkle in Time was paired with Incredibles 2 at the drive in theater, maybe it was paired like that across the country? I don't kniw
I was going to add comment like this. I wonder if it is due to summer and drive in business. One of the drive ins that are local to me actually had a Black Panther/Wrinkle in Time double feature (which is weird since both can be streamed). Maybe with summer, and a Father's Day weekend, they did a push thinking it would get more family business
Yes, they were paired at our local drive-in as well, which only does double features.
Our drive in had it on 2 of its 3 screens and had it paired with solo on one and infinity war on the other.
Rocket IS technically a raccoon... Or...a modified raccoon.
Rocket himself just doesn't know that that's what he is.
"There ain't nothin like me, 'cept me." It would be a bit like someone calling you an ape and showing you a chimp for comparison, technically you are an ape and share a lot of genes with chimps, but you aren't a chimp. Raccoons don't walk upright and they don't have vocal chords that allow them to speak a human language, nor do they have fully opposable thumbs that allow them to build incredibly complex weaponry out of spare parts. Rocket is genetically engineered, meaning he shares a lot of genes with raccoons, but he isn't one.
He's literally a raccoon who was taken apart, tweaked, and put back together with cybernetic parts.
He's still a raccoon, just a really fucked up one.
Just like the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, etc are all really fucked up humans.
He's clearly a rabbit
Thanks so much for putting this out tonight! Dan has truly gotten me into box office stats and how they work. Thanks, Dan!
Been waiting for Dan’s Box Office Report.
Disney should re-release Infinity War one week before Avengers 4. It would be great to see a double feature of IW and A4.
Yes! The highlight of my monday!! Love you guys
Dan and Roth making charts are one of the best things on youtube!!! #ChartingwithDan @screenjunkies
I watched Solo this weekend, and the theater was at least 80+% full.
always my favorite time of the week
Indywire is reporting that "A Wrinkle in Time's" box office bump is due to Disney running it with Incredibles 2 at Drive ins, counting the revenue of both films with the same ticket sale.
Yeah, this is not something new, Jon Carter jumped back in the top ten when it was paired with Avengers in drive-ins in 2012
Steven Whitt interesting. Seems a little cheap to me haha
A wrinkle in time was really really bad!
Never noticed how much Dan rolls his eyes. ALSO, please make this a podcast pls & thanks
I just noticed this too. I don't think this is normal. It seems like maybe he has something in his eyes or something?
dynamitejimi He used to wear glasses until recently. I notice that he moved his eyes a lot, when he was wearing them, the same way I do with my glasses. I don't know if he wears contacts now, or he had eye surgery. Anyway, I think is just the ticks you aquire over years of wearing glasses.
Badidea Bearcub - what is it about wearing glasses that you would roll your eyes (more).
My contact lens was literally attempting to jump out of my eye while we were shooting this. We actually had to stop filming for me to take it out. That’s what I get for thinking no one would notice! - Dan
ScreenJunkies News ahh that makes sense. Your eyes looked damn near irritated. Also please consider making SJU & Charting a podcast so I can listen to this in my car/throughout the day without having my YT app open
Incredibles 2 really was amazing. This is Pixar's Fantastic Four and Brad Bird taking his time to make this film was a smart decision. It's as if the cast never left and the story picks up nicely after the events of the first film. The animation for this film was much better than the first film. They character designs looks cleaner.
i loved the movie but sadly i had a very bad experience at the theatre thanks to a veeeery bad mom
Erika Espinosa moms amiright?
Raghu Seetharaman And now guess who just watched the first one for the first time, absolutely loved it and wanted to straight up see the second one, only to find out that it'll be released in bloody September because he lives in Germany?? Me.
Victor Ferger well at least your wait is 3 months while a lot of us waited 14 years! Lol.
Raghu Seetharaman thanks, Captain obvious
I live in Reno, Nevada. The local drive inn is doing the Incredibles and Wrinkle in time double feature.
Don't @ me, Mafia - seems like a great phrase to live by lmao
I saw incredibles today and it deserves all the money. Very well done.
There are 25k Scientologists in America, so I think I may have found the big group of Travoltaheads.
My suspicions lie in that direction as well!
Yes this was my first thought
how come that hasnt happened in all his past films then
There hasn't been the need or the culture, I would guess. He hasn't had such a public flop like this in the era of online ratings. Had Battlefield Earth come out at a time when there numerous online avenues to effect a score of a movie then I think we would have seen the same thing happening.
None of his prior films had a 0% fresh rating. I think this one inspired a campaign to help him from within the "Church."
I think it's pretty obvious that the recent Wrinkle in Time Honest Trailer reignited interest in the movie, sparking a resurgence.
I went to a drive in theatre on Friday night and they showed Incredibles 2, A Wrinkle in Time, and Deadpool 2 and it was so crowded that they started turning people away because there wasn't enough room for all the cars.
@22:26 "oh it overperformed, we're so supriiiiiised" 😂😂😂 I love Roth!
Such a great show. Always waiting for this. Dan and Roth are awesome :)
Incredibles 2 Just blew my mind . I’m pleasantly pleased with what Bard Bird and company did. I laughed a lot , I just can wait to see Incredibles 3! Jack-Jack was such a scene stealing favorite. Loved the score and man I The visual effects were impressive in the action sequences.
Keep doing what you're doing Dan and Roth. Love this show
Great video this week, Dan and Roth!
We saw it yesterday .. Great movie and loved that it was entertaining for both adults and kids !
I just got an ad for. SKYSCRAPER. 8minuted into this. You know that movie where, The Rock, sadly loses a leg, but is endowed with a magic prosthetic from the Harry Potter universe.
That allows it to solely hold his entire weight hanging upside down, and jump a gap 5x wider than humanly possible.
Dan Poopooing Jurassic Park, must be a weekday
Saw Hereditary twice. Loved it and couldn't stop talking about the layers with a friend.
Best Charting with Dan episode in memory!
I think Incredibles 2 might beat Jurassic World 2 in Domestic overall
There is no might to it, Incredibles 2 will make more money domestically than Jurassic World 2.
obviously, the real question who will win worldwide
I hope this happens
I agree. While I think "Incredibles 2" will make more money domestic, I think "Jurassic World 2" will make more money overseas. The other question is will JW2 overseas total overcome the difference between that film and the Incredibles 2 domestic, because I have a feeling Incredibles 2 is going to make quite a bit more money than JW2 domestically.
No, it won't make more money than Jurassic World 2 domestically and certainly not overseas. You people are forgetting how big the Jurassic Park series are in the U.S, much bigger than The Incredibles.
Those "box-office mysteries" were fascinating.
As of 6/18/18 @ 11:59 EDT, the average RT rating for Tag is 5.4/10, Dan and Roth. Thanks for all you do!
Go “Infinity War”!!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I watch Charting with Dan BECAUSE he reports the actuals. 💖💖💖
Domestic: Next week “I2” will be in 4th. End year in 3rd.
Great show as usual, can't wait for the Meg!
Conspiracy theories? I'm intrigued!
Roth, that jacket is pure class.
I quite enjoyed it. Fast, fun and colorful.
I still can’t believe Pixar made cars sequels before The Incredibles
Saw Tag and Incredibles and loved them both..... I hope more go see Tag :)
$187? THAT'S AMAZING!!!!
I think Wrinkle in Time re-release is Disney showing its brilliance and muscle in theatres. Double feature with Incredibles 2, field trips from schools, and other tactics show how they can see salvage their underperforming movies. I wonder that they will do with Solo.
I love this show. Being geeky can still be fun!
"Don't @ me, The Mafia." 😄
Going to see jurassic world 2 this weekend regardless
I'm so glad Incredibles 2 has done well. I don't know if it's quite as good as the original (it's been a long time, I don't remember it much), but it is certainly excellent. My only real issue with it is that Dash wasn't a very compelling or funny character; he was the only one in the family without a real character arc.
Anyway, always love these videos! As an aside, I have special stakes in what goes on reception and box office wise because my friend and I have a movie draft going on on this channel and so far I'm killing it, lol.
I really love this show. I just wanted to say that I both thought incredibles was a wonderful sequel that looked great, had super positive messages sprinkled through it, and looked great AND I think the new segment who done it and why is super interesting. Keen for more.
It was the Scientologists! 😂
I appreciate The Meg love as always! You both need to read the novel!!!
Take a look at a brazilian movie call "Nada a Perder", something similar happened with its score in IMDB, and had a huge box office even tough it had empty movie screens.
Almost keyboard catted about Wrinkle in Time. Glad I waited. For those in the comments screaming "Solo wasn't the only miss!" they do talk about "Wrinkle in Time."
I haven't seen hereditary, and while I initially wasn't planning on seeing it, looking at this division has definitely made me more drawn to it, just like what happened with mother last year
Wild guess on Gotti: Grease just turned 40, meaning long-time Travolta fans showed up for Gotti because of the great timing on it, enjoyed the film and then humored Moviepass people who suggested they promote the film on RT. So you had a large percentage of a small audience log into RT because of nostalgia. Sometimes you get a Hereditary that largely thrills critics and largely annoys audiences; sometimes maybe you get the reverse? It's fun to guess, anyway. Thanks again.
Maybe, but I think it's Scientologists. They're pretty cult-like. I wouldn't be surprised if they masterminded it and bought the services of a troll farm.
Closing out my Monday with Dan "My Charts Don't Lie" Murrell...
Kevin Hart’s ‘what now?’ Had an amazing raccoon bit 😂
I feel sorry for Tag. I wanted to watch it, but Incredibles 2 was so good...
Cool mug! Anybody know if they sell them?
I think the John Travolta movie thing with the audience reviews may have had something to do with Scientology. Like Scientology got a bunch of their members to go on rotten tomatoes & write positive reviews. Because remember John Travolta is a Scientologist. They may have even brought a group of them to a theater to watch the movie. I don’t know a lot about the inside Scientology but I know enough to know that that sounds like something they would do
At first I thought this title was referring to the animated short with the dumpling
Incredibles 2 / Wrinkle in Time double feature in drive-ins all around here
its Tuesday morning in my country Malaysia.
Mystery segment O.O
Hi Dan. See I have a doubt. Correct me if am wrong but Finding Dory had a 135 million opening weekend which ended up being around 27,8% of its entire domestic gross, Toy Story 3 had a similar but better performance with its opening weekend representing 26,6% of its entire theatrical run, if Incredibles 2 performs similarly to Finding Dory, for round numbers lets assume Incredibles opening represents 27,5% of its total gross, that would make Incredibles 2 not only a 664 million dollar beast but would also make it the 5th highest grossing film domestically kicking off Titanic (659 million) but just edging Avengers Infinity War for the fourth spot, deepening more in the subject I also found every 180+ opening ends up being a 600+ Juggernaut with the exception of Age of Ultron but that happened because Avengers 2 opening weekend represented 41,1% of its total gross. I need some help here, because thinking that not only three of the 5 highest grossing movies EVER have been released this year but also that Incredibles has a similar behaviour than Infinity War just seems unreal for me, so I think am missing something and I think you could clear this to me. Love the show. Thank you. Answer Please.
Some movies start stronger and finished bad compare to others. The Incredibles 2 won't even come close to pass the $600 million mark domestically, do you know how difficult it is for a film to do that, the movies that did that are much bigger franchises than The Incredibles in the U.S. The first Incredibles made like $240 million domestically, the sequel might make more but not by a lot.
BoyDanny93 Well the first Incredibles had an opening of 70 million. Plus that was 14 years ago. Pixar has evolved, but well, more evidence for the point I was trying to make, Pixar has a reputation of incredible performances (Opening Weekends for Pixar normally represent only 23-28% of their total grosses, being the only outliers Good Dinosaur, Monsters University and all the Cars). So I dont think that I2 is going to make remotely close to The Incredibles but to vastly surpass it, to reach the 240 million Incredibles1 made, it only needs 60 million more, considering that would mean that it would take a 65%+ drop in the second weekend to not achieve that goal (which is a Solo kind of drop). So still. I respect your points and thank you for answering but there's something missing.
BoyDanny93 For the record. Am also Skeptical for the 600 million. Thats why am asking.
i agree, good thing is Incredibles 2 will definitely cross the $1 billion mark
Awesome velvet jacket Roth, crushing it. :) also summer drive in theaters are starting up and are only allowed to put Disney movies with disney movies. Double feature.
I was curious about Wrinkle, but not $12 worth of curious. I saw it when it hit the cheap theater after its main run. It was worth $2 of curiosity on a Tuesday.
I don't know how The Creators of Jurassic World thought let's make a Dark Scary, Depresssing Movie after the Fun Popcorn Appeal of the 1st one
Disney tried to fudge A Wrinkle in Time to $100M yet it still failed lol
TAG was a great movie, very funny, definitely recommend seeing.
You guys are just so cute!
I definitely think Black Panther will get an MLK day 2019 re-release to get it over $700M (I'll definitely go), but this is how Avengers: Infinity War a) gets over $700M and b) possibly leapfrog BP by releasing it two weeks before Avengers 4 and also doing opening Thursday night double features.
You're forgetting one very important thing. Black Panther is likely going to get strong awards consideration, something Infinity War won't likely be getting. If that happens BP will be put back in theaters much longer than IW would be even if it played as a double feature with Avengers 4 for a week at the most. Plus why would it take MLK day next year for BP to get to $700M when it's currently at nearly $699.8M? It's about 3 weeks away from reaching $700M, but it would get there by this weekend if Disney had enough sense to simply put it back in more theaters for 1 week. I'm still scratching my head at how they've done that twice for "A Wrinkle In Time" twice over a month and are yet to do it just once for BP, Disney is goofy as f*** for that.
Dan why you keep rolling your eyes?
Quote of the day: "I can't wait for that fish to get into my life" -roth
Do what was the best year for Comic Book Movies (not including ‘18) for Movie fights
I’m wondering if school field trips and wind-ups are one reason for the jump in “Wrinkle in Time”.
Here we go again.
What was the matter with Dans eyes? Keep up the great work with these.
With you Roth, waiting with bated (think "baited") breath for The Meg. My theory about Gotti RT stats, Travolta has connections (not Mafia) in certain very large palatial edifices across this country. I hope that I was suitably vague with that hypothesis.
I hope I'm not 30 by the time incredibles 3 is in theaters
Whoa Roth how dare you think that Incredibles 2 will out perform The Meg?!?! :)
I don't really look at user ratings on RT, just the critics.
There’s some sketchy people involved with Gotti, wouldn’t be surprised if there was some hacking involved
So about halfway through I thought that Dan was talking really fast and getting though numbers out really quickly. Like...unnaturally quickly. I realized that for some reason my video speed was at 1.25. Just fast enough that you won't notice...for a while. After playing with the speeds for a while, if you want a laugh, watch this on double speed. (It's oddly not as much fun watching it slower.) Dan speedily reporting numbers is oddly hilarious.
A Wrinkle in Time may have see a bump because of school field trips. We've seen all 6th graders in our local area take students to see the movie in the last two weeks because New England schools are still in because of snow and teachers have nothing to do/teach. A Wrinkle in Time is assigned reading for them.
Incredibles 2 won't release in Denmark until august the 30th
13:59 "Avater"
I was thinking of going to see Hereditary because of the positive reviews from critics. The divisiveness adds a level of curiosity factor to it, but considering my own movie watching tastes tend to fall in line with critics (in the aggregate, or if they are Dan Murrell) then I don't think the division is a primary motivating factor for me.
Everyone wants to see Mission Impossible: The CGIed Mustache Revealed.
I bet Solo goes to Netflix right away
Yeah true I forgot about the streaming service. But they still have A LOT of content on Netflix and every month there's something Disney added. Rogue one and the clone wars are on it so are a lot of other big movies.
good analysis on the Gotti mystery, guys. This is a smoking gun for sure
Please correct me if I'm incorrect, but isn't summer movies technically released from May - Labor Day? Avengers: Infinity War was released in April. 🤔
A Wrinkle in Time’s surge at the box office is actually pretty simple: drive-ins. This article explains it quite well. www.indiewire.com/2018/06/disneys-boosting-a-wrinkle-in-time-over-100-million-drive-ins-1201975953/
