Box Office Sets Billion-Dollar Record | Charting with Dan!
Hosted by Dan Murrell
Featuring Lon Harris
Tech Director: Josh "JTE" Tapia
Assistant Editor: Emin Bassavand - Розваги
Can you get Spencer to record his Star Wars prediction now and release it after the movie releases so we can see how accurate it was? Could be funny.
Please yes! Cuz all i got is the morbid fear of RLM being right!
Don't forget Scoops, I'm sure he'll have a theory!
@@ninjatribble7961 great fucking point!
Or put it out but make it private until the movie releases as proof
This is an outstanding idea
Since Toy Story 4 helped break the yearly billion dollar films record, it got me thinking: what if Charting with Dan had a year-end review special? An episode where you go beyond the typical Top 10 highest-grossing format. Perhaps do breakdowns by studio or genre. Take a look at total/ow multipliers or best per theater averages throughout the year. Whatever comes to mind, that you don't get to do in a typical episode. You could use the Top 25, 50 or (and this might be a stretch) a Top 100 for your analysis. I have no idea if you guys have enough time and resources for Charting to do this kind of thing but I think you would do a great job. Also, having Dan, Lon *and* Roth in the same episode would be a dream.
Alberic Ponce de Leon I think that would be amazing for them to do! But I agree that it might be a bit too time consuming. One way they could circumnavigate the issue, would be for Dan to start the data at the beginning of the year and add to it with each charting research segment. Each segment is presented how it currently is, then at the end of the year, he presents the long term (compiled) version.
Maybe do it in Jan or Feb to make sure the Christmas releases get a fair shot
I'm heading to start a petition for you to release the Spencer Cut of this episode with his theory on it!
The quality of this show grows each and every week. I don't know how you do it.
I need to know Spencer's theory now
Right? What a cliffhanger.
Time heist
🐸👐TIME TRAVEL! 👐🐸
Let's do some charting junkies!
Now I really want to know Spencer's theory on "Skywalker".
If he pitched time travel, RLM did it first.
Same! Give us the Spencer Cut of this episode! Lol
Argentinean cinema has tons of wonderful, Oscar worthy gems, “Wild Tales”, “The Official Story”, “The Secret in Their Eyes”, “The Holy Girl”. Thanks for highlighting our cinema, even if the shoutout was brief and embellished with hilarious absurdity.
Based off the title I thought 'Blinded By the Light' was a Christian movie for a long time.
Same! And I have zero interest in those so I didn't look into it, I'm pretty sure the title had a bigger role than you would think in the movie not doing well
Same
Dan: commenting on how people just didn’t show up to certain films
Me: never heard of that movie. Maybe that’s why people didn’t show up. They didn’t even know about it.
I agree with Lon. I didn't even realise that Blinded By The Light was a Springsteen song... Unfortunate choice of title.
Wow. Dan Murrell said "Argentina." I look at Screen Junkies / Fandom from Argentina 3 years ago, I'm crying. Thank you!!!
jajajajaja estoy en la misma guachin aguante dan papá!!!
17:10 Argentinean here, I'm pretty sure either way it's fine hahah
Great episode as always, btw!! Charting really makes Mondays worth it!
I really want to know Spencer's theory to Rise of Skywalker.
Same
You guys better have video of Spencer explaining his nightmare scenarios for Rise of Skywalker. If they come to pass, they'll be great material for the Honest Trailer.
This is great inspiration for a documentary, Star Wars: Only in Your Wildest Nightmares
@@spiritchannels I'd say the theory in question is the "time travel" theory.. Lots of facepalms from that one, esp by this crew.
You can't tease us with a Spenny G Star Wars theory and not give us a Spenny G Star Wars theory!!!!
Entertainment Studios, brought to you by The Human Fund. The Human Fund, it's money for people.
I like this show so much! Dan is always great, but I feel that he's born to do "Charting with Dan"
So does *he* - this segment began because he's the type who spreadsheets this sort of information because it naturally intrigues him…
Dan please, on the last week of the Cats countdown you have to say it's the final meowntdown, if not a perfect opportunity will have been wasted 🙈🙈🙈
Could you do a charting on the lowest grossing Disney movies? You talk about a lot of the successful ones but I'm curious about the disney flops.
Last year they did a lot of coverage on Wrinkle in Time and Solo but yeah I guess a full list would be nice
This year, only Dumbo kind of floped, but not much. All other were successes. Last year, wrinkle in time and solo basically.
But even dumbo more than broke even, so It is Just a flop for Disney standard than a real flop though ahahah
Last year was The Nutcracker right? That was also a flop.
@@Natketty Dumbo didn't break even, it lost Disney somewhere between $70-100m. But when all their other movies are so massively successful their studios overall are raking in billions of dollars of pure profit.
I honestly thought "Blinded by the Light" was about Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
If Spencer's theory turns out to be true please talk about it on SJU or something.
If Spencer's theory is true, it will likely be all we talk about for WEEKS.
The only song I know from Bruce Springsteen is “Born in The USA”.
I only discovered recently that "Streets of Fire" was named for a Springsteen song, but he refused to let them use it unless he played it in the movie.
I always love when Lon mentions a little movie most people haven't heard of. Zama was indeed an excellent movie, personally one of the best of last year. Didn't know they have it on Amazon. Hope more people will check it it, then. Cheers, Lon!
Lou, you hit the nail right on the head blaming the title for some of the problems with "Blinded by the Light." For some reason, this film was totally under my radar, and with seeing only the "jumping kids" poster at the theater and hearing the title, I thought this was a Christian film and gave it no further thought.
I thought the same, but walking out of the film, that title makes so much more sense than glory days or dancing in the dark
Been thinking about this since last week. Lon mentioned movie soundtracks in reference to Forrest Gump and Grease and how they can add to box office.
Maybe look at the biggest movie soundtracks and see if the movies correspond. For the most part I think Lon is right. The biggest soundtracks usually came from blockbuster movies like The Bodyguard, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, Sister Act, Forrest Gump, Flashdance. But there are some soundtracks that did better than their movies like Who's That Girl, The Commitments, and maybe The Big Chill.
Btw I am pretty sure Disney will dominate this category. Which may make this a bit hard..
I think for sure with the Disney animated movies the songs were a big part of the appeal. That's also still definitely true for Frozen. Meanwhile movies like Brother Bear or Brave weren't such huge hits and also didn't bring very memorable music.
@@Phelie315 True but they will definitely dominate a top ten list. You may have to separate musical soundtracks vs soundtracks that are just songs featured in the movie
LOVE YOU BOTH! DON'T EVER CHANGE!! unless you want to. I'm not your boss.
We all went to see Revenge of the Sith even when Star Wars backlash was very much present in the wake of Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. I don't know that people will /like/ Rise of Skywalker, but they'll go see it. Then they'll go see it again to confirm their like or dislike. A note about Mindhunter -- The guy playing Manson in Season 2 is the same guy who plays Manson in Once Upon a Time...
So you guys make fun of the name "Entertainment Studios" in a channel named "Fandom Entertainment"...?
Lol Dan, Gemini man is DOOMED
But it has Will Smith! Two Will Smiths even! There's never been a failed Will Smith movie!
Not only there are 3 1 billion $ MCU films this year, they were out in less than 4 months, which demonstrates how devoted the fans are to this franchise
12:30 the more famous version of the song is by Manfred Mann.
I'm down for an all Argentine episode
Lon and Dan, both lookin’ sharp this week. Good on ya lads ✊
Seeing 6 movies pass 1 billion is actually a really awesome feat if you ask me. Yeah they aren’t all amazing, and 5 of them are owned by Disney, but I just think it’s cool in a weird way.
My work week is Tuesday-Saturday, so this makes my Monday evenings not so depressing!!
I love it when Murrell tries to be funny. More of that champ!
John Wick 3 was Awesome!
I hope you reveal Spencer’s theories about Rise of Skywalker after the movie comes out
Yesterday is absolutely NOT The Beatles' most recognisable song.
True, but it's more known than blinded by the light is for Springsteen. That said, after seeing the film, that title worked way better than yesterday
I am with Dan on this... I adore the Has Fallen franchise. I could never defend it to anyone but I am irrationally excited for Angel Has Fallen.
I remember how many fanboys thought Godzilla KOTM and Detective Pikachu were gonna join the billion club. The delusion.
"Saturdays are for the good boys" got a good chuckle from me, lovely video like always.
The Hitman's Bodyguard was really good imo
Welcome guys - was waiting for this
I liked half of the Ready or Not trailer, but it did what so many trailers, especially horror trailers, do and started just showing me every kill and things that would have been really shocking if I had gotten to see them in the movie! I just started closing my eyes so it wouldn't spoil the whole movie for me.
I saw Once upon a time in Hollywood this weekend. Had to avoid spoilers for so long. It was a packed theatre
Annapurna studios is amazing. I know they've only had flops, but mahn, Sorry to bother you, Sisters Brothers, The Master and other Paul Thomas Anderson films, and the list goes on. Man, that's like the best studio out there. If it goes down, then we'll probably lose a ton of beautiful art.
Best part of my Monday
Noooooo
Now I need to know Spencer's Star Wars predictions please let him record it.
It would a lot of fun.
wow...Mention this WILD Spencer theory, get me super curious, and then doesn’t tell what it is. I personally don’t care if it ends up being a spoiler. At the end of the day, it’s just a theory. Great episode, by the way...But now I’m hungry for Spencer’s theory 😵.
I didnt even see Rise of Skywalker yet and I want to know the theory now 😂
Excellent video as always
Hitman's Bodyguard was a hoot
I think you may be missing two big problems with the Han Solo movie. (1) I don't think those of us who really grew up on the original films wanted to see any Han Solo other than Harrison Ford (not that Alden Ehrenreich wasn't great, he just wasn't "our" Han) in the movie. (2) Han had already died an on-screen death before the "Solo Story" release. I have trouble going back to major stories about characters whose relevance to the main narrative has been closed.
Yep you pretty much nailed it and add in the mystery of Han Solo is what made him cool diving into it was unneeded
Didn't even know that's a Bruce Springsteen song... And I thought of myself being a fan cause I know Secret Garden. Didn't even know this movie had Springsteen songs in it. And the title thing made me think of Philadelphia. That movie is now sooo linked to streets of Philadelphia its scary. Look at the music video and tell me I'm wrong.
Wow Dan and Lon talking about Argentina, made my day. BTW I think everything is called argentinian.
I love how the Cats' names in Cats are so crazy that you guys said the name right but were like"No. That's not it. Why would the caT have the same name as a band?" There is infact a Cat named Mungojerrie in the Cats musical. It is a clusterfuck of a musical and I love it.
I´m from Argentina! It´s good to hear you guys talk a little about movies from this corner of the world! By the way, you can use either ''Argentine" or "Argentinian" as they are both technically correct, but it is more common to say "Argentinian" as it applies to both people from Argentina and things from Argentina, whereas "Argentine" is normally used only to refer to people.
*Manfred Mann* , not Foreigner, did the famous *Blinded By The Light * cover…
Thanks for chatting with us 🙏🏻
Love these "has fallen" movies too))
Oh Hi! I am from Argentina. Thanks for the shout out to our national cinema :D
Release the Spencer cut!
I just want to make a pitch for one show and have Scoops Mcgee and the Professor do this show. Just 1 time pick a silly week.
I love the tumbnail ♥
it was manford man that made blinded by the light big
17:20 Semantics with Dan and Lon!
28:13 The Last Jedi gave poor Dan movie PTSD.
To be fair, Star Wars fans gave him PTSD 🤷♂️
Simon Buchan yeah that’s more accurate.
onequartercanadian was it really Star Wars fans or more like internet outrage
Blinded By The Light looks like an awesome movie! I couldn't see it last weekend because I was between paydays & working. I hope to see it this week end and that others will too.
I heard the title Blinded by the Light and I thought the movie was about Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
YES, 'Once Upon a time in Hollywood' is Worldwide number one!!!!
OK So I never thought the day would come that you'd talk about ARGENTINA haha. I say I'm Argentinean, I don't like "Argentine" and I haven't been able to find a difference between the two.
There have been two Arg movies in the past few years that have been nominated to the foreign language Oscar (Relatos Salvajes, my favourite, and El Secreto de sus Ojos, which actually won that year.)
We have quite an interesting indie scene as well! Thanks for mentioning us 💜
One might say the musical theater crowd will get catty with you.
*shades* YEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
Catdown to Cats
Suggestion for the next week's episode is to take a look at the numbers on e on the movies directed by Alex Kendrick (War Room, Fire Proof, Courageous), what would be considered faith-based movie.
Low budget films that at first glance have great return of investment.
But of course I need the master of numbers Dan Murrell to take a look at it
I am delighted to inform you that Mungojerry is in fact the name of one of the cats, it hangs out with Rumpleteazer and they're chaos cats. There's a song about the two of them doing mischief. 😂 (and I hate that I still know this from my brief obsession with Cats at the age of 14.)
Springsteen also ain't Queen, The Beatles, or Elton John.
Queen and the Beatles are the absolute top tier rock gods and music legends, Elton John is like a notch down from there, and then Springsteen is a few tiers down from that.
He's not an all-conquering cultural phenomenon.
Phillip [TEC] In terms popularity and worldwide appeal yes, but in terms of talent, I disagree.
@@ieatgremlins popularity is what matters for box office
Brevincampbell12 exactly Bruce did it to himself by choosing to not to do more pop music. Bruce is all about seeing him in concert and you will be a fan for life and making albums about themes he is interested in. That doesn’t attract the masses
*Stands up in support of Classic Rock*
It's on my radio too.
RE: Episode 9, JJ Abrams has a talent for crowd pleasing and I can't imagine him not delivering a movie that draws 1B worldwide. Ep 7 nearly did it in the US alone. I think many that were disappointed with Ep 8 and/or Solo will come back on the belief that JJ is going to right the ship. The one factor that gives pause is that China is not big on Star Wars, so it needs to get it done without the second largest market. Still, hard to imagine JJ won't get it done.
Counter arguments: 1) Ep 7 was the first Star Wars movie in a long time, so people were hyped. There is SW fatigue now, which is why Lucasfilm sticks to streaming shows rather planning for more movies. 2) JJ Abrams is known for his mystery box, but often fails to deliver when he actually needs to close out the story.
However, being the last one in the trilogy, I think most people will go see it just for a conclusion to this saga, regardless of all these factors.
it's monday, monday, gotta get down on monday
wooooo charts!
I loved Long Shot - I thought it was hilarious.
You should add Spencer's theory timer next to Cats' one.
I'm sure someone commented this already, but Blinded By The Light was a for by the band Manfred Mann, but was written by Springsteen.
Shoulda said Lion King is a... beast.
Love this show. Thanks for all the charts MrMurrel and movie recommendations MrHarris #Argentina FTW
My favorite video game movie, Tron.
Long Shot was a much better movie than Good Boys, but ticket sales rarely have anything to do with quality.
Quality is subjective. To each his own.
Long shot looked like a typical rom com which hurt it
There's a rumor that Tarantino would do he's final 10th film in a horror movie.
I saw 2 movies over the weekend and I wanted to see Blinded by the Light but it was the film that got ruled out. I hope to see it this upcoming weekend.
The issue with solo was that nobody wanted to see a non-Harrison Ford Han Solo, and they were told it wasn't a "real" Star Wars movie
Been checking my notifications, then thinking damn maybe they skipped it today, but YES here it is!
Every week, I keep forgetting that they're 3 hours earlier from me so I'm pleasantly surprised when it arrives later in my day.
Manfred Mann covered Blinded by the Light, not Foreigner. I hate to be internet correction guy, but as a classic rock expert, I felt responsible to chime in. Love your work, keep it up. -Greg
Come on, Cats should be a lock for a billion dollars!
Dan as always your entertaining and informative. And Lon you bring knowledgeable humor that works well with Dan.
Dan I know you said the domestic box office is keeping pace with the prior year. But for me there is some very concerning numbers if you look at the worldwide numbers.
I'm going to look at the world wide box office numbers for the big six studios and compare their yearly gains and losses for the past three years.
Paramount: Grossed 1,738.8 billion in 2017, 1,990.6 billion in 2018 (A plus of 252 million), 600 million in 2019 (A minus of 1,390.6 billion)
Universal: Grossed 4, 278.3.8 billion in 2017, 4,902.7 billion in 2018 (A plus of 124 million), 1,835.2 billion in 2019 (A minus of 2,648 billion)
Sony: Grossed 2,927.1 billion in 2017, 2,616.7 billion in 2018 (A minus of 300.4 million), 1,835.2 billion in 2019 (A minus of 781.5 million)
Fox: Grossed 3, 869.1 billion in 2017, 2,583.7 billion in 2018 (A minus of 1,285.4 billion), 790.5 million in 2019 (A minus of 1,793.2 billion)
Disney: Grossed 6,324.8 billion in 2017, 7,036.9 billion in 2018 (A plus of 712.1 million), 7,772.1 billion in 2019 (A plus of 732.2 million)
Warner Brothers: Grossed 3,768 billion in 2017, 5,526.8 billion in 2018 (A plus of 1,758.8 billion), 1,015.3 billion in 2019 (A minus of 4,501.5 billion)
Yes we still have slightly more than four more months to go in 2019. And there are some big money making films yet to be released. But here is some concerning takeaways from these numbers.
1. At this rate even with the six one billion plus films this year, 2019 is short of 2018 by over ten billion dollars. I really don't see the up coming films grossing that, maybe five billion.
2. Fox complains that Disney messed their box office gross by not promoting their films. But Fox's 2018 also had a shortage of over a billion dollars from the prior year. Therefore Fox was hemorrhaging money before the merger. Why do you think they decided to sell it?
3. Every studio saw the Disney 2019 schedule and took the year off. The only reason Sony is not hurting as much is because of Marvel doing Spider-man. Stop blaming Disney, the other studios didn't even try.
4. If Fox's losses lead to it being sold how can Warner Brothers survive doubling Fox's two year shortage in one year?
Is Spencer on the time travel Star Wars theory with Rise of Skywalker?
Blinded By The Light was more famously recorded by Manfred Mann, although both originally written/recorded by the Boss.
Charting and I click I need more charts
Super Mario Bros did help set the bar low.
i only heard of "ready or not" when jeremy jahn's posted his review last night...i didn't see any promotional stuff or trailers for it otherwise, but it seems interesting
Hobbs and Shaw on 438 without China. The Rock got it
Going to go to Ready or Not tomorrow, early screeining. I liked the first part of the first trailer, but then stopped when they were revealing too much.
@DanMurrell Can you explain the per theatre numbers? Isn’t it totally dependent on the theatre size? Like if you a film sell out 4 small theatres and another film fills 8 theatres at half capacity, would they have an equal per screen average? Makes it seem bias to films in auditoriums with more seats
