  • Today we take a look at the two leads from the new Disney classic Frozen and Frozen 2. I really like the first movie but have major problems with the character development in the second one. Hope to see what you guys think.

For the discussion about whether Anna destroying the bridge should be chaotic or lawful, I would say lawful because she knows her people have evacuated the city. Yes the sudden homelessness would do a lot of harm to the people, but nobody would have been suddenly killed in the water from the dam.

That and because the makers of the film didn't know what they were doing and didn't know how to end the movie, we lost a potential ending where Arendelle would be rebuilt and include architectual elements inspired by the native people. There was concept art and a chance to sell a new toy castle play set and they didn't go through with it.

    • @benjaminbierley2074

@@artloveranimation My impression was they were given very little time to put the movie together because Disney was desperate to not lose the hype train if they took too long making a sequel. So undoubtedly they didn't see themselves having the time to design and construct a rebuilt Arendelle, much less work with the product people to have a toy castle playset based on a new design ready in time.

Fun fact t about frozen 2. They hadn't written an ending by the time they actually started working on the movie. They didn't know what Elsa should find at the end of her journey, and pressed for time they copped out and said "eh just have her find herself or something"

On to your hot take, I personally really *really* liked Frozen 2 but for different reasons than Frozen. Frozen I loved because of the interpersonal meaning and the subversion of the "true loves act" being a sacrifice for Elsa rather than a kiss from Kristoff. God-tier subversion and I loved it to bits when Frozen came out. Frozen 2 hit my worldbuilding and high magic fantasy adventure button. The most memorable parts of Frozen 2 are all the magic things and the song. Random Headcanon for Show Yourself, I kinda think that Ottahallen (hoping I've spelled that right) was the one calling Elsa and was taking the visage of the mother to try and meet the "bridge" on their level. Ottahallen is a force of memories and nature and perhaps was the last "bridge" between magic and people so to speak? So in calling to Elsa, it's calling to the one destined to carry on the legacy it began? Idk, since Ottahallen exclusively uses memories that Elsa would either *know*, *remember* or *recognize* as being her mother, I'm inclined to think that's Ottahallen's way of connecting to Elsa. This idea shifts the line in Into The Unknown about "are you someone a little bit like me who knows deep down I'm not where I'm meant to be" to a literal-ish thing. Ottahallen *is* that "something" like Elsa, and *knows* that Elsa has perhaps a grander destiny. The fact that line is followed up with Elsa saying "every day's a little harder as I feel my power grow" is telling. In Frozen, the worry was over how powerful Elsa was/is. In Frozen 2, the power worry, for me, is how much farther she has to grow, and that it's continuing that quickly for her. In terms of her knowing those things, I wonder if Ottahallen had a capacity to influence Elsa's feels? Since Elsa was being called and over the course of Into The Unknown changes from her reasonable "I'm not going anywhere, my family is *here*" stance to "Fuck it let's go" so to speak, Ottahallen's calls could have been subtly leading Elsa to try and she realizes after the call stops what might have happened and when she says "I did it on purpose" she did, she just didn't know she was doing it until after it was done. There's a history of her having to be kinda *told* what her power can do, makes sense for Ottahallen's calls to do the same thing.
Long thing to say: Frozen 2 was memorable because of Into The Unknown and Show Yourself and all the magic stuff was epic enough that I ignored pretty much the whole romantic subplot because eh. Frozen 1 was memorable because of Let It Go and the interpersonal relationship with Elsa having powers and Anna not being a key strain on their relationship after Elsa having to hide it because she *couldn't* hide it, so the easier thing was letting the relationship lapse instead of anything else because she had never been taught how to communicate. Note that Anna was always the one initiating conversations until the party after coronation that one time where Elsa tried to connect to Anna, and then every time after that, Anna was initiating the interaction between her and Elsa. Idk if any of what I've said makes sense but
Thank you for being open and honest about where you stand on the second movie and listening to you opened my eyes to what I missed/ignored. I didn't like the overt political messaging either in Frozen 2, but I deemed to ignore it and focus on my favorite part which was the high fantasy magic adventure. I didn't know it released on thanksgiving so that was fun to learn! I hope you have a lovely day all

I really liked frozen 2 when I first saw it, the songs, the spirits, the costume design, and the opening and animation with into the unknown had me floored. The song was also something that helped me a lot and reflected what I needed in my personal life at the time but yeaaaaah you're pretty spot on with your points and I didn't even think about it coming out on thanksgiving. That makes the ending sooo much worse! Lol Holy hell man. In retrospect I think I stopped paying attention to some of the movie and started self reflecting because it is really messy and I'm surprised I'm only now picking up on some of it.

Honestly I'm just glad Moana was the next disney princess movie because by the time frozen happened I'm so damn sick and tired of royalty rejecting their role and duty as a plot point. Like it or not someone needs to be managing the country. Moana did this perfectly because Moana makes the willing sacrifice to take care of her people instead of go adventuring, then the story does happen that allows for the adventure but she put her duty and people first. Moana is Frozen and Brave done right IMO.

@@DrMDHyde I'm just a history nerd so the idea of royalty complaining about their lot in life when there are peasants sleeping in hay beds and doing manual labor everyday really bugs me.
Yes compared to princes and kings princesses tended to get the short end of the stick and be married off for political alliances, but there were plenty of very capable queens (And in Polands case a female King{because king was a title regardless of gender}) and beyond that you still live a life of luxary.
Merida in brave wants to live free and do whatever, but if she wasn't a princess she wouldn't have any time to do that! Heck its unlikely she'd have her horse or her bow if she wasn't the princess. Being a princess gave her status to get away with such actions.
Elsa while she's mainly been seen as a parallel (intended or not) to LGBTQ, also comes off as "go live your life for yourself and screw the rest" because her life is sooooo much more special than anyone else's apparently. I'd say the 2nd one could have given her a kind of pass where she actually has a higher calling, but the 2nd movie was just a joke. In moderation its good to put your foot down and live for yourself, but Elsa and Anna really needed to actually be taught about ruling their damn kingdom. Hans, mustache twisting baddie he is, actually showed some serious management skills and I respect that in a ruler way more than cheery positivity.

One thing that bugged me about _Frozen 2_ were all the callbacks to the first movie.
Yes, the charades thing is kinda cool way to see how the characters interact. Olaf's recap was pretty funny. And Elsa cringing at herself singing "Let it Go" was kind of a funny jab at the backlash. Individually, these are kinda funny.
But by the third or fifth time I was just saying, "WE GET IT. Frozen was a thing!" It felt like they didn't have as much confidence in the sequel so just kept trying to remind everyone how good the first movie was.
Put it like this; they mention Hans a dozen times in this movie, but he affects nothing. They just keep bringing it up like "Remember when my ex tried to kill us? Boy, that was a trip!"

  • @adamwu4565
    @adamwu4565 Рік тому +2

A few thoughts about Frozen 2:
What Elsa finds at the climax of “Show Yourself” isn’t her mother, but her own memory of her mother (she’s singing the same lullaby she sung to Elsa and Anna when they were kids at the beginning of the movie). She’s either sublimating a realization she has come to on her own into the voice of her mother, or the Spirit of Atohollan is speaking to her using the familiar guise of mother. And the basic theme of it all is that the answers Elsa has been looking for are to be found inside herself, all along.
When Anna destroys the bridge she is acting for all intents and purposes as the de facto lawful ruler of Arendelle, seeing as Elsa is presumed dead and she is the next in line for the throne at the time. She is therefore the one person with the most legitimate authority to lawfully destroy the bridge. Arendelle had already been evacuated, so only property is at risk. Furthermore, the people of Arendelle can’t return to their homes because the Spirits have been disturbed and are actively preventing them from doing so, and the Spirits will not be placated unless the bridge is destroyed. So Anna is acting in the longterm best interests of both the Northuldra and the Arendellians when she chooses to destroy the bridge. The empty buildings are useless to the people of Arendelle if they cannot return and are doomed to fall into ruin anyways in time if peace is not made with the Spirits and the Northuldra. And if peace is made, the people can return and rebuild even if the infrastructure is destroyed. So I’d call Anna’s actions Lawful Good on that one.
Elsa could not have saved Arendelle from destruction without help from the Water Nok, and being unfrozen by Atohollan as a consequence of Anna breaking the bridge. The whole sequence can be interpreted as a Ritual of Reconciliation between the Arendellian and Northuldra peoples (or, perhaps, the mythic origin of a Reconciliation Ritual tradition). The peace is broken between the Arendellians and the Northuldra, and the principle party at fault is Arendelle’s former King. Elsa and Anna, though themselves innocent of their ancestor’s crime, accept responsibility for it and offer restitution to the Northuldra by breaking the dam, with the loss of Arendelle’s infrastructure as a reparation payment as a symbolic apology. The Spirits in turn decline the offered reparations by freeing Elsa and helping her avert the destruction as a gesture of forgiveness and goodwill. And as a result peace is restored between the two peoples who can now go forth as equals with neither side owing anything to the other.

much in the same way that betraying someone in favor of keeping your oath is not lawful, but neutral... so is helping someone if that help comes at the expense of the well being of others.
its not good, its just a settling of scales.

Honestly, I think Frozen 2 was a pretty good movie. My least favorite part of it was Kristoff's side plot, but I enjoyed the rest of the movie immensely. In fact i think it's pretty much as good as the first. As for "Show Yourself," I get why people can read it as an LGBT empowerment song, but honestly, it's a self-acceptance song for anyone; it's even described that way by the songwriter.
As far as I know, Elsa hasn't been confirmed as LGBT, but I know people like to think she is for one reason or another. Personally, I don't care if she is or not, but it's not important to her character. Her powers proved to be dangerous to her sister, so she feared them. That led to them going more and more out of control, but due to the love of her sister, and her own love she felt for her, she gained control of them and no longer needed to fear them.
I don't agree with a lot of how you interpreted the movies, especially given that most of the LGBT stuff probably isn't what the creators intended to see it as, but I am having trouble putting my feelings into words. But I will say I think people are looking too much into it.
In the end, I believe the second movie is more about how Elsa doesn't feel fulfilled as the Queen but doesn't want to leave because of her love for her family. She's looking for a purpose and thinks it's somewhere out in the world, in this case the "secret siren." But in the end, she realizes her purpose isn't somewhere out in the world. She doesn't need a bigger purpose to have meaning.
Yes, it's a song about self-acceptance, but she doesn't get it just because she saw a random memory of her mom. Her parents always accepted her; it was just her powers had already hurt her sister. I do get that LGBT people can relate to the song and read it as queer coded, but I don't think that should mean that's the only interpretation. I'm sure just as many non-LGBT people can relate to the song as well.
I get why you think it's damaging, and I disagree, because Elsa had her parents' love already. This isn't about hurt feelings; she legitimately put her sister's life in danger, and her powers kept getting stronger. She accepted her powers in the first movie. The second movie was about finding her purpose. She thought at first it was being the queen; she wasn't content. That's what "Into the Unknown" showed. Being scared to show yourself to people isn't unique to LGBTQ people or anyone with any type of disability.
People in school get bullied for being too smart, for not being pretty enough, etc. That's something most people can relate to. That can make anyone feel the need to hide parts of themselves to fit in better. I just don't see it the way you did, especially taking the entire story into account. Elsa's entire family loved her, knowing she had magic. It wasn't until she accidentally hurt Anna that she and her parents began to fear her magic, for a very good reason. She had endangered her sister's life.
But it's clear they still loved her and accepted her as their daughter; the only thing they were scared of was her magic going out of control and hurting someone again. They kinda forgot it ignored the lead rock troll when he said fear would be the enemy. Elsa herself was afraid of her powers, not because of having them but because of the accident that hurt her sister. But again that was resolved in the first movie. The second movie was Elsa finding her purpose, as she clearly wasn't content as the Queen even if she tried to be.

Edit: Adding a movie review isn't such a bad thing, it adds a whole other layer of content that is educational. I didn't even think of the indigenous people thing or that it was released on Thanksgiving. I mainly just enjoyed the movie and disassociated from it, or more accurately I didn't immerse myself deep enough to notice these fine details.

I disagree slightly, I see the ending more as "as long as you acknowledge you forbearers were trash and try to help people now it might be bad but really won't turn out to be the end of the world (country whatever)" emphasis on helping now, can't just say oh yeah people were bad in the past and forget about it.

And believe it or not, I’m actually more excited for your Redo of Healer video (Yeah I know it came out today but I wanted to write this comment earlier because y’know… life) specifically because you have a hot take on it. I’ve never seen the show myself, but literally every UA-camr who made a video on it says that it’s absolute garbage. (I haven’t watched those videos by the way, just some offhand remarks and you can tell from the thumbnail) So to hear you speak up and say, “Yeah, I actually think that this show is awesome, and moreover, I say that it’s *objectively* awesome.” Is not only something unique, but is something that I’d be interested to hear, regardless of who’s right and who’s wrong.

What's sad is that there was a lot of talented people working on this, they actually had good story and plot point (especially in the first one where Elsa was supposed to be the villain) the problem is the direction who kept pushing their agenda into it. Most of the time when there's a story issue, it comes from the direction and not the talent behind it which is super frustrating.

I put Anna at Chaotic Good when I finished mine. I put Elsa at Neutral Good. I initially thought Elsa would be Neutral and Anna would be Neutral Good when I did it, but it turns out that wasn't the case. I even put their starting alignments at relatively the same place you did lol. I think the Chaotic Good for Anna was mainly because of the first movie and the end of the last. It makes sense why she ended up at Chaotic Good now, as she is quick to rush into most decisions because she wants to help. Chaotic Stupid/Good. Elsa I still am puzzled about. I think she gets a Neutral good rather than Neutral because even though she's mainly looking out for herself, she does GOOD things and was locked away for so long.

I genuinely thought Frozen 2 had the potential to be good, it just needed to come out a couple years later, be 30 minutes longer, and have its target audience a little older (the same people that were the target audience for the first movie, not the same age demographic).
This would allow them to add more mature themes to the story, allow Elsa's character development as one of the Spirits work, allow Anna to actually have development into being the next queen, add necessary nuance and more complex themes in the conflicts between the various peoples, etc.
The extra time would have both allowed the studio enough time to cement what the movie should be AND allow the target audience to reach an age where they could go over the nuance in the story in a way that would work.

I am mostly confused how Elsa regresses , and ends up doing the exact thing from movie 1 and leaves her sister , but this time because she's an alleged 5th element, when in actuality she's most likely an extension of the water spirit , if anyone is deserving of the 5th element status is the one who actually tried to solve the problem of the movie, and that's Anna. Is it me or did Elsa kinda just dump all responsibility on Anna just to have potential magic adventures ?

Besides him being a bad twist villain, it bothers me more that Hans and Anna honestly had better chemistry than Anna and Kristof imo. Especially when it hits the portion with the Rock Trolls, when they are kind of forcing them to be together. Also side note at 17:07- That ain't Blizzaza. As an interesting point (which there's a good chance you already know), the Water Nokk comes from the idea of a Näck (or Nøkk), a type of water sprite of which a good chunk of them loved luring women and children to drown with song. Apparently, however, not all of them were malicious, and stories exist of ones which lured not just women and children, but men, as well, and opted to not drown but simply entertain their audience. These Nøkks were quite similar to other water-sprites throughout Europe, like the Scottish Kelpies and the Welsh Ceffyl Dŵr. The former of which is what the Loch Ness Monster was believed to have supposed to been before the inane suggestion that it was both real and a friggin' plesiosaur.

I actually loved Frozen 2. In it, I interpret Elsa as an autistic person. I understand that plenty of marginalized groups, including LGBT, latch onto her too. However, I find a critical difference is that being LGBT doesn't actually hurt anyone. Elsa's powers do hurt others when mishandled. I've repeatedly seen this happen in real life when autistic people are mishandled, and it's painful for autistic and allistic alike. For marginalized youth who are rejected by their family, if you find Let It Go inspiring then, good for you. However, that's not Elsa's position. Her parents do love and accept her. They just overreacted to a traumatic incident. I see the first Frozen as Elsa just learning how to avoid killing everyone. Frozen 2 strikes me as the real Hero's Journey, of Elsa learning to accept herself. In Show Yourself, her apotheosis is finally learning that there is nothing wrong with her, a lesson she applies immediately in the face of proxy rejection from her grandfather. That is the message I take away from Elsa's arc; that not being normal does not mean you are broken. That's a lesson I think we can all benefit from.

16:58 I know I'm a year late, but an arguement could be made for evil. the intent is'nt ill, but arendale is a pretty large city and she makes the desision that to her knoledge will destroy it. while I recognise the value of freeing the spirits and soldiers they number less than 100 who are still capable of living just unconfortable. while the flood as it's presented should drown 100s if not 1000s. the intent is'nt malice so I'd run it as chaotic good, but i do hate how the movie brushes past the decision that could kill so many

Something that really annoyed me about the sequel. Anna and Elsa say that a bridge has two sides. That’s meant to cement themselves as two sides of the same coin, one side for the mother’s people and one side for the father’s people. And yet… Elsa is the one befriending every single spirit. If the two are meant to be a bridge between their separate cultures… wouldn’t it have made more narrative sense for them both to participate in the whole spirit bonding thing? Like, heck. It makes way more sense for Anna to be the one who takes Gale, since she (and Olaf) uses Gale the most. You could argue she ‘tamed’ the Giants, but all they did was break a bridge and walk off. If the ending message was ‘a bridge has two sides’, then both of them should’ve done it more evenly.

My tke on Anna's choise. First of all, choosing between two equally bitter options (aka moral dilema) is always neutral. Question is, is it lawful, neutral or chaotic neutral. We can shove out "chaotic" because Anna spends whole song not taking Impulsive desision. And well, whole song called "next right thing". It is clear whatever choise she is making she make not because she wants this outcome but because this is the right thing to do, which is Lawful as fuck. So eah, shoving away personal feelings to choose least dishonorable option, lawful neutral
