I think his godhood wasn't restored when he fought the cyclops because that was less self sacrifice and more suicide attempt. In that moment he clearly did not value his own life and had no intention of fighting back.
This right here explains it completely he wasn't going to fight the Cyclops to defend the people he was going to fight the Cyclops because he wanted to die. It was herc's Darkest Hour quite literally.
I think he was trying to at least distract from the cyclopse destroying the city since the cyclopse was calling for him to fight while doing that, and it wasn't until Phil came back that he wanted to try to win the fight rather than just be punished by the cyclopse
I always thought it was because Hades and the Titans were attacking Olympus and it somehow prevented it from happening
The way I saw it was in that moment he was still completely mortal due to his agreement with Hades that minutes later would be broken by Meg's sacrifice restoring his demigod status and him sacrificing himself to rescue Meg then permitted him to become a god once more otherwise they would potentially have people who appear completely ordinary becoming deities for putting their lives on the line in a similar fashion.
I think it's more about self sacrifice for anyone rather than simply self sacrifice for the innocent. Megara was reluctant to go along with Hades, but she still harmed Hercules. So him sacrificing his life for hers makes him even better.
As a Greek and Roman mythology major (sadly only a BA major), I have really just one clarification about Greek heroes vs modern heroes. Greek heroes almost all did have fatal flaws, but they were not defined by having them. A good example of this is the Athenian hero Theseus, who for sure was a flawed character, but never really had a single driving flaw the way that most other heroes did. It was a common heroic trait, but not necessarily a defining one.
Really, the major difference between the two types is that being an ancient Greek hero was about what you did, whereas being a modern hero is about why you do those things. Ancient Greek heroes were expected to be kings and/or demi-gods who went on quests, destroyed monsters, led men in battle, and generally accomplished great deeds that regular people simply couldn't do. Why they did those things wasn't really important. On the one hand you have the afore-mentioned Theseus, who risked his life to slay the Minotaur in order to save the lives of innocent Athenians from being sacrificed to it, while on the other hand you have Achilles, who nearly single-handedly broke the armies of Troy more or less just because he was really angry (Achilles is pretty much the ancient equivalent of Kratos from God of War 1-3). Ancient Greek heroes could be well-meaning characters like modern heroes, but they could also be cruel, selfish and tyrannical. Their personalities and motivations weren't a deciding factor in whether or not they were heroes: only their actions.
Modern heroes, on the other hand, are generally expected to be paragons of social virtue. Doing great deeds isn't necessarily important to being a modern hero: to be sure, most modern heroes DO accomplish great deeds, but their status as heroes is never contingent upon them doing so. Instead, we tend to consider characters heroes because they stand for important virtues: protecting others at the expense of the self, defending the weak, protecting social order, etc. Just killing monsters isn't enough for a character to be considered a modern hero if the reasons for them doing so are selfish or even evil.
Considered that way, Disney's Hercules is actually a really good portrayal of both types of heroism. Zeus tells Hercules that in order to regain his godhood, he must become a "true" hero, which the movie uses as a stand-in for the modern heroic archetype. After training with Phil, Hercules has all the physical capabilities to be an ancient Greek hero, and that's exactly what he does. He kills the Hydra, and then he goes through a montage where he kills all sorts of monsters and becomes famous. At this point he's already achieved becoming an ancient Greek hero by virtue of accomplishing dozens of impossible tasks, but because the modern ideal of heroism no longer aligns with the ancient Greek ideal, Hercules hasn't yet become a "true" hero, just a really powerful and famous monster hunter. It's only when Hercules is willing to sacrifice his own life and happiness for the sake of others that he attains the status of a modern, "true" hero and regains his godhood.

Now this kind of seems like the perfect thesis for a big paper. Out of curiosity, did you ever write a paper about any of this?
@@kristianhughes3746 Funny that you'd mention this, as it kind of was. Not exactly the thesis paper that I wrote, but I used it as an argument. I'm sure you could go broader than I did and do this as an actual paper though. My thesis was about Herakles/Hercules specifically, whereas I bet you could use all heroic Greek myths in support of this particular idea. I was told during my thesis planning course that my thesis needed to be specific: that's why I went with the Herakles myth specifically instead of focusing on heroic myth generally.
My actual thesis project was about proving that the ancient myths of Herakles/Hercules had less internal consistency than the modern stories. In other words, that people (as you can find some of in this very comments' section) shouldn't complain about the mythological "inaccuracy" of modern Hercules stories like Disney's Hercules because the ancient stories were even less internally consistent, and thus having a strong "mythological base story" wasn't so important. You can see how the idea I expressed above would be helpful in arguing that, though again it was only one argument out of many.
I won't transcribe the entire thesis: that would be ridiculous since it was 40 pages long. That said, the gist of it was that I examined three ancient sources of the Herakles story (Euripides's play "Herakles," Sophocles's play "The Trachinian Women," and Aristophanes's play "The Birds"), a few adaptations of the myth from the Roman time period moving into the Middle Ages, and finally three modern sources (the Steve Reeves films "Hercules" and "Hercules Unchained," Disney's Hercules, and I don't remember the last but I definitely had three). I made the argument that the ancient stories distorted the myth depending on the style and the intended argument of the playwright.
Euripides was an anti-theist who believed that the Greek gods were cruel and immoral and weren't deserving of worship, so he changed the Herakles story to be that Herakles performed the Twelve Labors to atone for his father's crimes and allow him to live his last years in the city of his birth, which he'd been exiled from. After doing so, Hera sent two minor gods to ensorcell Herakles's mind and cause him to kill his wife and children. Herakles was shown to be the epitome of a good man, and the point of the story was that the gods are cruel an capricious, and ruin the lives of good men and women as part of their games and are thus undeserving of praise or worship. Sophocles, on the other hand, takes the opposite approach, telling his story from the perspective of Deianeira, Herakles's second (legal) wife, who learns that while Herakles is away on his many quests and conquests he cheats on her and doesn't care for her at all, seeing his quests as being merely a way to generate praise for his strength. The play is about the last days of Herakles's life and it portrays him as a wife-and-child-beating brute in love with his own glory and nothing else. Lastly, Aristophanes's play is an absurdist comedy about two conniving mortals getting the King of the Birds to help him deny the gods their rightful sacrifices, and in doing so rob them of power and get themselves legitimized as the "true" gods. Herakles appears at the end as basically a brute like in Sophocles's play, but as a joke: he just wants the dumb talking to be over so that he can go back to eating and beating the shit out of people. All the protagonists have to do to win his support, and therefore the debate since Herakles is threatening enough to scare the other gods, is to offer Herakles good food and a hot woman to fuck.
On the other hand, regardless of the events of modern Hercules myths, Hercules is pretty much always a consistent character. Like in Disney's Hercules, he is someone who is strong but is still a "man of the people," someone who will use his power for good instead of evil, someone who will put the good of the many over his own satisfaction. The specific argument I made was that Hercules in modern stories is essentially an ancient world version of Superman: born of powerful and elevated parents, raised by farmers, enemy of monsters and villains, supporter of goodness and justice. This is interesting because Superman's origin story was ultimately based on the Hercules mythology (from Roman and Middle Ages sources), meaning that the entire "character arc" loops back into itself, from ancient to Middle Ages to modern and back into ancient all over again.
It was a good paper. I think I still have it saved on a flash drive, but it's not on my computer anymore. It's also been 8 years since I wrote it, so it definitely might be lost to the ages. Nevertheless it was a really interesting experience writing it, and I definitely learned a lot about the Herakles/Hercules myth specifically. I still don't think I would call myself an expert though, since it was only a BA honor's thesis paper. If I'd gone further and gone for an MA or a PhD I'm sure I could have dug substantially further into the subject. But that was simply not something I was willing to do. Unfortunately, right now STEM jobs are elevated and nobody cares about Classics jobs. My mentor at university told me that to get my PhD in Classics I would need to become fluent in German, Italian and Hebrew, do at least 10 years more study, and spend hundreds of thousands more dollars, and at the end of all that if I couldn't get a teaching job I'd still just be flipping burgers at McDonald's unless something changed drastically. I didn't think that sounded like a very smart idea, and I was getting seriously burned out on school and language-learning just studying Mandarin and Latin, so took the Classics Major and Mandarin Minor happily and proudly, and didn't pursue any future studies. At some point I'd like to go back, but I'm definitely not in the financial circumstances to do so. And honestly, since I often spend my wages going traveling to interesting countries in non-pandemic times, I doubt I'll have that kind of money to get back into schooling for a while. I'd definitely prioritize going to India, Tunisia, or back to Israel for a couple weeks higher than dutifully putting away money to go back to school. Maybe that will change later, but for now traveling is my main priority.

Whether or not you might have gotten peer validation, it's clear that you really knew the subject well. Even 8 years later you can site most of the classic poems that you researched. Whatever you end up doing with your life, I gotta say I really appreciate hearing what you did learn and how far you did go with it. It's really sad that it's not as viable a career, because that sort of perspective on the ancient literature is really intriguing and kind of important. There's a lot we can learn from the ancient past, which isn't necessarily what most people think. So, ya, thanks for both your original comment and this response!
@@kristianhughes3746 Thanks! Things are looking up now after some bad stuff. I took off half the year because I worked at a restaurant and it's a pandemic. When it seemed like it was getting safer I went back, and then eventually got COVID because the bosses were letting people in who didn't want to wear masks or take precautions. I quit after I got COVID and I'm training for a new job now. It's been a hard year but I survived COVID and I've got a new job that is remote work, so I don't have to worry about getting COVID again because my bosses won't enforce safety precautions. Brandon Sanderson's new Stormlight Archive book just came out and I devoured it, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity just came out and I'm excited to play it, and overall things seem to be looking up. If only I could get a PS5 though...

I am.unreasonably salty that Herc broke the letter of his pact with Hades.
The deal was that he could save the girl but he had to stay.
Nowhere did that deal say he could leave if he managed to get to her and get her out of the river
maybe but well hades doesn't strike me as the guy to jump in and get her and I don't remember hearing him say if so let's at least agree it's a bad deal
First,they never shook on it,so its not an official deal. Second,Hades broke the deal. Why? "She goes,you stay." But as soon as he jumps in Hades makes it clear that Herc is gonna die and Meg wont be brought back. Hades never made the deal official because he had no intention of honoring it,so when his double cross didnt work Herc just walks out the front door
@@soldier1stclass640 yeah throw in the fact that Hades usually does keep his end of the bargain the deals always Twisted to benefit him though I feel like Katie's got the short end of the stick in the cartoon adaptation because Hades in actual mythology was a rather Pleasant guy, it wasn't his idea to kidnap Persephone that was actually Persephone's ideal. We always get the version that paints Hades in a bad light because he's the king of the underworld which a lot of people connect to hell for no other reason than just because it's the underworld though the realm of Hades is the afterlife for all people and there are multiple regions for each individual person with the tourist being the place for the worst of the worst so there is the fields of punishment which are for bad people but not those who would do super taboo things like cannibalism.

True - but the deal is that his soul is meant to be stuck in the river styx. But it seems that a God is unaffected by styx - and so after rescuing Meg, which should have killed him, he can walk out.
Also they don't shake on it like hades does on all his other deals I suppose.

Herculese vs cyclops was him having a pitty fight. "There are worse things" this line right here shows that he's comparing death to heartbreak not sacrificing himself for others, but trying to find some meaning in the pain that he went through.

Not a plot hole, imo. Herc doesnt get godhood from the cyclops because he is on a self destructive path from depression over his realization of betrayal. He is _still_ just going through the motions, this time he just expects to die trying and doesnt care.
When Herc jumps in to save Meg, he no longer expects to die he knows it and does not care because there are things more important than his own motivations...also Disney True Love.
TLDR: There is a very large difference between I do not care if this bear eats me vs. "You effing bear, EAT ME FIRST!! Nothing will get to my [baby, love, parent, favorite piece of jerky, etc.].
Phil is probably Lawful Neutral leaning True Neutral. The guy is a strict teacher of heroes, though more specifically in the greek sense, but has become jaded over the years
The part in which he makes the deal with Hades is just such a great example of how a single action could fit with completely opposite alignments solely based off of the intentions of the action and the mindset that went into the action.
When i saw they part about being nettled about the voting being removed it immediately made me think of the solution that a other youtuber came up with make a pinned comment with several sub comments that represent each option and the use the likes that option comment gets as a voting system. (if your curius what youtuber came up with this solution it was antscanada look at the videos where he asks you to help him make a new terrariums and there in the comments you will see how he did it) .

I would’ve thought he was chaotic good considering he just through a himself into situations to get everyone to like him without thinking about how he could destroy everything (tbh neutral confuses me in context)
I disagree with you and say that he is on the border of chaotic good, neutral good, true neutral, and chaotic neutral mostly because he really did want to help people he wanted them to like him and yes he didn't really think about his strength at first but that's because he didn't have any one to train him.

I actually always thought that him needing to needing to save Meg was his 3rd unselfish act, the 1st being going out and saving the town despite not having any powers, the 2nd being going to free the gods, even though it could be argued. It's not exactly uncommon to have themes like that in both Disney and Greek mythology, so figured he needed to show it 3 times before they would actually give it to him. *shrug*
I watched Hercules basically for the first time a few months ago, and discovered “I Won’t Say I’m in Love,” the absolute most underrated song in any Disney movie.
The real true hero moment in the movie is that, during his fight with the Hydra, Hades declares it half time, and it is indeed halfway through the movie

Problem with that moment with the cyclops was that he had his power sealed by his deal with hades at the time. So despite the true hero thing he did not get his god powers back as the powers didn’t “see” the action.
Once he got his powers back his second true hero moment was what triggered it because his powers “saw” it

Myth Hercules is probably the closets thing to a modern hero in Greek Myth
One thing I've noticed that a lot of people that don't seem to realize about the scene in the underworld at the end is that Hercules didn't actually do anything to make the deal with Hades binding. Unlike his earlier deal with hades, Hercules didn't shake his hand or sign a contract or anything, he simply dove in as soon as Hades is accepted the deal to save Megara.
Hercules had no actual real obligation to uphold his end of the deal, especially considering Hades is an evil scum-sucking slimeball. I've heard people consider that seem to be a plot hole, but it's really just Hercules not giving a shit about what Hades thinks.
Giving up literal godhood for the one he loves is Literally one of the most Good acts one can conceive of.
And because it's by some Divine law, Lawful Good.
One ding for Chaotic Evil for not acknowledging that the "Zero to Hero" montage song is a Nat 20 moment.

I think Mythological Zeus would be Chaotic Neutral bordering on Chaotic Evil.
The reason no one bothers to point it out is because of *context.* That line before he does it? "You could get killed." "There are worse things." Punishing yourself and going to your death, while noble, isn't quite the act of a true hero, now is it?
Always look at the context, not just the actions. Anyway, great vid, I love this movie too! It just makes me smile like a fool :)

I would actually argue that giving up his strength for Meg is a Lawful NEUTRAL act. (Lawful for the contract) One of the key features of Neutral is that while they're not unsympathetic to strangers, they'll ultimately put themselves and their loved ones first if forced to pick.

I always thought he didn't get his godhood back when he fought the cyclops because of the deal with Hades. It temporarily suspended his powers and made him a normal mortal for the time. In the beginning Hades instructed Pain and Panic that Hercules has to drink the complete potion including the last drop and that deal probably brought him into a state as if he had drunk the last drop.

Ok that scene though where Hercules beats Hades by making a deal essentially beating him at his own game has to be Nat 20
I believe the reason why he didn't get his godhood back during the cyclops was because his deal with Hades was in effect, which required him giving up his Godhood for 24 hours. I imagine that with that in effect, despite being more of a true hero, he wasn't able to get back his godhood during that moment and required a separate moment instead.
The cyclops wouldn't qualify him because he knowingly put himself in that situation, in effect correcting a mistake, knowing that it was a bad deal in the first place. It was motivated by guilt not alturism.

11:33 the reason why Herc needs to choose between godhood and Meg is said in that exact clip. Herc, being a god, is immortal, while Meg isn't. If he chooses godhood, he'll be immortal but Meg won't be, so she will naturally (aka because she's a mortal, she will) die and Herc won't be happy because there isn't anyone like Meg. So, he chose her so he don't need to morn her death for the rest of eternity.
And before someone asks _"But why can't Meg be turned into a goddess?"_, here's the explanation: Meg didn't have god DNA, while Herc had (and that's why he can be turned into a full god)
I don't think most of his actions would be chaotic as he isn't intentionally motivated to disrupt order, he's more neutral good in my head as the law comes secondary to his own motives. Meg seems more chaotic neutral on the other hand as her actions are deliberate (also, why are we putting different characters actions on the same bar?)

Voting Solution.
Use the UA-cam API to collect all UA-cam comments then filter them out with a hashtag for expected alignment results or video ideas. Generate a graph of this data using d3 (data visualization library) to post as a highlight/preview before the next video.
This approach only requires a mention at the end of the video to use what hashtag and keywords so the filter functions pick up all the data (spelling and capitalization can be accounted for). Afterward everything is all automated even the posting of the SVG graph which you can set to post at a given time.

Predection will be lawful good as the final alignment
Hercules didn't fight the cyclops out of self-sacrifice or altruism. At that moment, he was in the dumps as Meg had been outed as a schemer that'd been using him. Yes, he went to defend the city, but it was a fight he knew he'd lose, and he just didn't care. That's not heroic, that's just stupid, and that's where his mind/heart was at that moment.
I thought the reason Herc didn’t get his god mode for the cyclops was because he was facing him out of spite or suicide.
Obviously he's good so I think he'll get neutral or evil for the shock value
Zeus said that only Gods can live on Mount Olympus so I'm taking this to mean that if he wanted to be with Meg he can't live on Olympus and keep his godhood to live amongst mortals.
I feel that the cyclops battle isn’t a plot hole because it’s not self sacrifice that was the key to true heroism. Zeus stated a true hero was measured by the strength of his heart. Hercules went out to fight the cyclops as an act of duty, for his job of defending the people. There was no personal will behind his decision at all, even less than normal because he was still emotionally hollow after Meg’s betrayal.
But when diving into the river Styx for her soul knowing there was a good chance he’d die from the act, his heroic will shone through at full strength, restoring his godhood.
Oh it's pretty obvious you can't rely to heavily on actual Greek mythology going into this movie. Especially considering Hercules was the Roman name for the Greek Heracles.

Calling he starts Neutral Good slightly alignhed to Chaotic Good, he is willing to help others, but more than anything he wants to reunite with his biological father and ends up Lawful Good.

People are saying he broke the contract with Hades when he dove into the river to get Meg, but he got his godhood back when he saved Meg. What Hades meant was he would bring Meg back to life but Hercules would have to take her place, aka die. But he got to her and restore his godhood, making him immortal. So Hercules couldn't hold up his end of the deal if he even wanted to because he was now incapable of dying. And while he could have been killed after he chose Meg over his godhood...well that seems silly after the time spent from the making of the deal to a time period after the movie.

I dont know how you think but I think the reason he didnt get his godhood back is because he was under the deal of hades. Remember hades had the capability of taking away godhood so why not be able to suppress it. So sure he might have been qualified but he had the poison barrier and the deal barrier that took away his powers (because regular mortals cant just become gods)

I would say that stain is probably neutral evil. Overhaul is probably lawful evil. Shigaraki is chaotic evil, and gentle criminal is probably chaotic neutral?

Hell if i recall the Mask looking criminal even said they (most of the weaker ones) follow Overhaul out of fear of death, and there small amount of loyalty to the former leader.

Shigaraki seems neutral evil, Stain lawful evil, Overhaul chaotic evil, no idea about Gentle, though La Brava is definitely chaotic neutral.
@@shadowshedinja6124 I think Stain is Chaotic Good... he's attacking (killing) fake heros. Even when Ida first attacked him... gave Ida an out, because Stain didn't want to hurt/kill a kid... it was only after Ida stated why he was there Stain changed his mind.
@@aienma6660 that's why I think he's lawful though. He has a very specific code about who he kills: heroes who seem fake. He's willing to give kids a chance, but not if they are going to attack him for selfish reasons.

Disney’s version of Hades is probably the absolute best personality to describe the Biblical Devil. You have all these stories of the Devil going around being a monster, but they’re not a bruiser, they’re a trickster. He tries to appeal not just to the worst of people, but the absolute best. The Bible says Lucifer convinced other angels to turn against God, and that takes some major charisma. Later on, Lucifer tries to make a deal with Jesus. The guy really just goes up to the most powerful being on Earth and tries to use Old Testament verses to trick God into a contract for power. For, I think it said 40 days, Lucifer was trying to make a sale to literal God.

Hercules losing his godhood to be with Meg kinda confused me watching this, like why loose godhood instead of gifting immortality?
Eros (Greek Cupid) got his girlfriend immortality, and yeah she had to prove herself before she got it, but Meg’s been through hell to.
