  • Blogilates (Cassey Ho) has recently released a blog post in which she discusses her new challenge, a 90-day journey to reclaim her body and rebuild some of the muscle she had when she was competing. Part of this journey was to rebuild her relationship with her body and herself but unfortunately, I don't believe her approach will achieve that.

My current goal is to reach 100kg deadlift before I turn 42 in less than 3 months (currently 70kg 1rm, I’m 52kg ). I think that personal challenging goals are more beneficial in the long term than “body goals”. ☺️

I want to build all over strength and flexibility for aerial hoop tricks. I’m pretty good at doing leg days, but shoulders and back need…work. Thanks to you, I’ve found some excellent at home workouts that actually build muscle.

Last year, because of overexercise, poor diet and toxic mindset I was on the verge of anorexia. Now I have recovered, but I still suffer from amenorrhea. My goal is to maintain my current weight and become stronger and more flexible. My doctor told me to train only 3 days a week and I want to train in a healthy, effective way. I do Irish dance, but before my dance sessions I love to do some workouts.

    • @tiryaclearsong421

My goal is building strength. I like to dance as a hobby and I'm very flexible but far too wobbly. I'm following Caroline's epic program because I enjoy follow along, the community is motivating, and it's helping me finally do a pushup.
Eventually I'd like to switch to a balance of weight lifting and dance but to meet this goal I'm only doing one 40 minute barre a week on the active rest day to not lose technique and 10 minutes of stretching a day. That isn't enough for progression but I might cycle my focus for dance, cardio fitness, and strength in some sort of way through the year. I don't have infinite time for every hobby sadly and resistance training is good for health.

It's interesting that in her blog on day 7 she said that she was so exhausted by the workouts that she had to take her rest day one day earlier than planned. Nothing wrong with resting when you need to but she explained this away by saying that meant she was truly lifting the weight she needed to build muscle. Hmmm, so nothing at all to do with trying to sustain that training volume and 3 hours of cardio a week on 1500 calories per day? Somehow I manage to see progress in the gym doing 5-6 exercises 3-4 times a week *without* feeling absolutely exhausted by the end of the week. I hope she's doing okay as this is extremely excessive.

Read her latest blog post. She doesnt seem to handle constructive criticism well. Shes just disregarding it as negativity and interpreting everything so as to not have to actually consider it. That would be me. I can't seem to get the diet part right. They say you have to eat all of these calories and protein. The amount of calories most say that I have to eat to build muscle is scary, especially since I've fought with my weight ever since I was 13 and now I'm 35 at 105lbs. Was at my lowest in 2020 (probably should have been hospitalized). I think she has the same mindset about her body, although she tries to make others "think" that she's all about self love and health when she has no idea how to love her body at all

If you have to lose weight, including cardio in your schedule is always good, but preferably you want to do cardio after you lifted weights or in a separate session. I used to be a huge fan of Blogilates. I remember when Cassey talked openly about the bikini competition and disordered eating, even came out with a video “why I will never diet again.” Fast-forward: the first 90 day challenge. Concerned fans like me were called haters. After the challenge, she encouraged folks to buy her 90 day journal. I started doing a lot of body comparison and wasn’t enjoying her workouts anymore. I finally unfollowed after she released a calendar of the month that targeted one muscle group per week, an hour a day, without rest/stretch days; it seemed really intense and unwise.
I’m sad to see that she’s doing another 90 day challenge like this, even if she’s not encouraging anyone to do it with her. 😕

I suspect that the fear of gaining weight also impacts other decisions in her life. She's been honest about her tendencies towards overworking herself & being in control of everything in her life. Weight is something that's easy for her to maintain & gives her confidence to keep going, keep hustling. But she's also mentioned her hesitancy towards having a baby, as she gets that pressure now after marrying her long-time boyfriend - there may be a fear of how a pregnancy would affect her relationship with her body in a negative way with all the changes that come with it.

  • @TheYazmanian

blogilates having 1500 calories on a ‘bulk’ makes me terrified of what her maintenance calories are. she’s trying to gain little to no body fat whilst also gaining muscle, and i think she’s desperately trying hold onto a ‘toned’ figure. i’ve always been suspicious of her eating patterns when she would post WIEIAD’S of such low carb meals and hardly enough. with her height and activity levels i’d expect at least 2500 to maintain and additional for a bulk. so many young girls look up to her and try to replicate her diet and ‘program’ (which hardly has progressive overload potential and structure), which will only lead them down a dark road. i wish cassey would just be content with where her body is now OR, if she’s truly wanting to change and quit the timelined transformations, go all in on a real bulk and try to gain solid muscle. sorry for the rant, i’ve just always had this hunch that she doesn’t truly have a healthy relationship w food and exercise. great video, hopefully it opens some eyes and discussions. :)

Sometime during quarantine her brand has completely changed and has now ventured into the territory of click bait, disordered eating, and exercise misinformation. a) I feel overtrained and exhausted just looking at this workout plan. b) Gaining muscles on 1500 calories with this much cardio and movement? Like, is it a joke? Even if she does not admit it, she must know that she will - most probably - loose weight, not gain it? What I'm thinking is that maybe her real, hidden goal is not to really gain muscles, but to have such a low body fat percentage that what little muscles she will retain will be visible? c) It's so irresponsible to post it publicly - with so many details regarding specific numbers... Even if she says it's her personal plan, her followers can - and many probably will - imitate what she's doing. And that's plain dangerous. d) I feel bad for her. I feel like during last few years she's been in a constant mental battle with accepting herself and I really, really wish that she would, at some point, try to work on the root of the problem, and not embark on another "body transformation". e) Finally - another great and important video! Perfect mixture of science and compassion, thank you for your great and important work in the fitness space.

The need for control also worries me. It's nice to feel in control but she's depending on adherence to this plan to feel in control. It's better to regain that control by shifting your mentality to accept what is actually in your control and focus more on that. The whole locus of control thing paired with acceptance. She seems like she's seeking peace by falling back on bad habits and I'm worried about her.

I just started watching your videos and you never personally attack any influencer or come for them in a misogynistic way. While I still enjoy her content, I feel like it’s specifically geared towards women who are starting their fitness journey and don’t want to “bulk up” (build muscle) and just want to get “toned.” It feels like content that discourages lifting with the common misconception that you can’t get “leaned” and “toned” with weight lifting. I feel like fitness content for women is so polarized - it’s either pilates/yoga is “everything” or lifting is “everything.” It’s like you can’t encourage a happy balance between cardio and weights.

I just read her blogs yesterday after not reading her blog for years and I was shocked how horribly uneducated she is for somebody who calls herself an "anstructor" and rejects the word "influencer". Like not being able to handle a 2.4 pund uptick in bodyweight over the course of a week. I literally fluctuated that much in kilograms between yesterday and today. These are the basics. Also, claiming mucle weighs more than fat, aren't we over this already. The training plan seems really random, too. No real structure, np progression, odd exercises that limit the amount of load you can use because of e.g., stability. Thanks for covering this, Harry. You hit the nail on the head here.

Wow. I saw her workout plan and immediatly thought "damn, this is how much more I should do? And at that calories???".... and I already did minimum 8-10 excercises, each 4 sets/8-12 reps with challenging weight/almost every set to failure 3 days a week on a caloric deficit. Now I know why I spent last weekend basically halfdead, moody, and binge-eating. Today I started anew after those unplanned rest days (my body forced me to take) and wanted to at least try do as much as her. But I immediatly injured my knee and ended up crying out of frustration over how weak I am bc I only was able to hit half of the volume of my last session. Needless to say I'm a total beginner in all of that stuff and obviously confused by the many different advices out there. I can't believe she put out smth like this. As a beginner myself, dont go so hard! Just ease into it. Dont do as many exercises and you dont have to work out every day. Just build up to the point where you're working out every day and doing as much exercise as you want. Also, know that more does not always equal effective. Sometimes taking a rest day will help you recover. Dont be so hard on yourself! Everyone has to start somewhere. If you do this much as a beginner, it might lead to burnout. Work on being sustainable, work on your form and the numbers will follow. You're not weak at all!

I never knew her caloric count was so low. I was aware she was stating her journey but it was concerning she was running 30 min before lifting weights to begin. Usually when I lift, I usually do a liss cardio on the treadmill with headphones in for about 20 min or quick abs circuit. As always your videos are gems of wisdom and encouragement

I am so glad you talked about this in a respectful and well mannered way, as what some people who have spoken about Cassey in the past only to be labeled as "haters".
I must say that ever since Cassey lost weight on her first 90 Day Journey, she has become someone obsessed so much with numbers and working out for vanity purposes. Her recent videos have been "how to reduce a double chin" and "weightless arm workouts that really work".
Now she looked back at her bikini competition that she said it was good but mostly bad in terms of calorie intake (1,000 cal) and how her exercises were to 4 hours a day. To me, why would she look back at something was good at first, but mostly bad in the long run?
This to me seems very concerning as she can either injure herself or risk putting herself in the hospital due to overworking herself, both physically and mentally. What is also worse is her demographic being mostly teenagers and young adults that might look at this and think "maybe I should try this as well." This happened as well when she lost weight the first 90 Day Journey.
Her latest update after 7 days has been concerning as well in terms of her weight. She gained a couple pounds since starting the weight training, which is to be expected when you start working heavy weights as water retention, even though she said in her first blog about this journey she doesn't care about her weight and gaining muscle mass.
I'm sorry this was a long rant, but I am legitimately concerned for her well being and can't speak out about it unless she slaps a hater label and blocks people who speak of it about how dangerous this can be, for herself and others who will try to do this. I know she is a good person, but lately it's been a rollercoaster of how to react to people calling her an influencer instead of what she wants to be called. Idk man, I hope when this ends, she doesn't get upset for not reaching her goal or worse be injured.

Whenever I hear "xx day challenge” I already know nothing good is coming. People almost always have way too strict expectations of what the want to achieve in this time span. There’s a lot of stuff you can’t influence even if everything is on point. And especially if the goal is growth, muscle growth takes fucking looooooong. How about we just set goals we want to reach and work towards them, no need to count the days. Also those challenges kinda imply that it’s gonna be a thing for a certain time and when it’s done it’s over.. and that’s the opposite of what fitness should be lol. And when has basically a prep plan (obviously it’s not that, still super high deficit and extremely intense training) ever fixed anyones relationship with food? Never, usually it does the opposite.

  • @theresem754
    @theresem754 2 роки тому +6

Thank you for this video and giving your opinions on them! It's so easy for people (especially women, in my experience) to not realize how dangerous it can be to deplete your calorie intake, especially when heavily working out. In the times I was eating 1500 calories a day or fewer, it was due to mental health issues. I was working out a *little*, and still lost 10 pounds--I wasn't trying to, and I'm already smaller-than-average. I think some people tend to glorify overall weight loss/eating less without looking at what's actually happening to your body and mind. I also think it's odd she keeps saying her journey is for herself alone when it looks like she's caving to societal pressure more than anything.
I'd been thinking of following her 90 day journey meal plan, but thanks to your video, I don't think I will. I appreciate your insights!

I thought this workout load was normal and to be expected and if I didn't do it I was lazy. Imagine my surprise when I finally learned that over training can be a form of self harm. There are probably a lot of people out there that think this level of working out is necessary and normal and it's either hurting them or it's causing them to not even approach fitness.

Now you've pointed out some of the issues I've considered with her rep vol, ammount cardio, calorie intake etc, I do feel affirmed that I wasn't being weak at all at the time for not being able to maintain her 'standards' myself, or that it was healthy for me to try to.

I love Cassey, I still do. I used to do her free calendar workout plan, but even then I questioned it since even after getting used and getting stronger, I still find the workout plan very hard to follow mainly because of fatigue, it only allows one day rest, and how almost everyday my abs never get rest. I stopped following her workout plan when I followed her 100 squat challenge and hurt my joints so bad, had to go to doctor. I don't blame her fully though, it was also my fault for not listening to my body since she also put warning to listen to your own physique.
Now the more I got farther from her influence the more I see the problem in her method, and it saddens me a lot. She was the reason I'm into fitness and learning to love my strength, not just my physique. It sucks to see the person I looked up the most is actually struggling herself. That's a flaw from my side as well, but it just seems like a 'look how hardcore I am' flex than a smart training plan. Possibly keeping an audience from starting their fitness journey since it's so overwhelming. Hence I prefer people with your approach, as there're many gems out there, one change at a time. It sounds like disordered eating/body dysmorphia repackaged as “muscle building” to make it sound healthy. This isn’t generally how you build muscle, it’s how you lose fat to show your muscle. I’m not her nutritionist and I don’t know her body or head space - it just seems this way to me. Because she has such a large audience it’s hard to see her sell this (when she probably doesn’t even realize what she’s selling) as a healthy way to build muscle. I wish her the best. I hope she gets to a truly healthy space, both mentally and psychically if she’s not there already.

Far less than Cassey is expecting of herself ironically and I'm losing ~0.5lbs a week without dying. And I'm managing to not lose strength this time. Last time I wanted to lose I shaved my calories down to 1300-1500kcal and barely had energy for light workouts. I did lose ~2lbs a week, but after 6 weeks I had lost a noticable amount of strength.

Since being medicated for a mental health issue I have it has been easier to sustain a healthier fitness outlook and not be punishing myself repeatedly in the gym or on runs. I don’t even run on lifting days anymore I just do a little jump rope and get into my lifts. I feel for anyone who has trouble in this area we are meant to love ourselves and when we have unhealthy practices we do a lot of damage to our self worth and self love.

i think a huge issue i have with cassey, is that when i discovered her, i was 13/14 experiencing the beginning of my eating disorder. she was detrimental to my very impressionable brain, and its unbelievable to me now the damage it caused. after recovering in my late teens, my martial arts instructors introduced me to the world of lifting. i learned a lot and i had to unfollow blogilates because it was upsetting to know that there are other young people probably also developing dangerous disordered eating patterns and she doesn’t even acknowledge it.

At 5’2” and 125lbs, 1500cal is about what I _need_ to eat on a low-moderate activity day. As in, BMR needs with not really any targeted exercise, just going out and walking around for a while to do errands. Her 30 minute jog at the beginning of each workout would be more than enough to get me at a calorie deficit for the day! When I clicked on this video I honestly thought “surely it won’t be that bad” but the fact that anyone could eat that little and workout that much is insane to me and absolutely reads as a sign of the beginnings of disorder eating. I don’t even think you really did it justice with how calm you were, I had to sit back and think about it to be hit with the full force of how hard her plan actually is. I feel bad about it, and really hope she’s okay. Being a fitness influencer must be really awful for mental health, on top of already struggling with disordered eating before her fame. :((

She also said she wanted to lose weight to be healthier ... But, you can have a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle without been skinny. Honestly, if by exercising and eating well you still have a little belly, that's fine ... It seems to me that more than wanting to be stronger, healthier etc, she just want to be leaner or look like other fitness influencers. Just give your body what it need.

  • @vtheory7531
    @vtheory7531 2 роки тому +8

The calorie amount is pretty shocking given the amount of exercise she's doing. I think she's trying to build muscle and cut at the same time which might be possible, but so difficult. Bulking (even lean bulking) can open up a chance to gain some fat along with the muscle, but it seems she doesn't want to gain any fat at all, hence the low calorie limits.
In my personal experience, trying to cut while building muscle is basically impossible for me. I always lose steam on my training and I got so frustrated with my lack of progress because I don't have the energy to train harder. I felt much better once I ate more and saw improvements with my performance. And as I built muscle I naturally looked more 'toned' anyway, so it all worked out in the end.
So I think she needs to focus on one thing at a time (especially since it's only 90 days). If she wants to build muscle, put the fat loss goal on the back burner until she's happy with the amount of muscle built. Then maybe in the next 90 days then she can focus on cutting.

my jaw genuinely dropped when you said that she was eating 1,500 calories 👀 if she somehow keeps up that level of training with such a low caloric intake I wouldn't be surprised if she got rhabdo or something... I've seen it happen under similar circumstances.
from what I understand from research and personal experience... wouldn't a reverse diet be the best fit for her goals ? you get the benefit of optimal muscle growth from the increase in calories while also growing your metabolism and increasing your maintenance cals...who doesn't want that ? and since it's less aggressive than a straight bulk, I personally found it less scary and less uncomfortable since I wasn't stuffing myself constantly. I'm 5' 2" and building muscle, getting stronger with very minimal fat gain at 2,500 calories soo I'm pretty happy I reverse dieted lol. i feel like that is what Cassie actually needs to improve her relationship with food and fitness.

What you're saying sounds reasonable, and after a little research myself I accept that to gain muscle, it seems much harder to do with home workouts and no weights. However, since watching a few of your videos, I find myself feeling very sad and demotivated. As if I have to endure this stressful thinking of 'not only are the exercises I'm doing pointless, even the soreness I thought was good may actually be bullsht'.
Is there a way of knowing whether, after working out, it has actually helped in some way? How do I know or can find out if the soreness I'm feeling is just cap?
I'll be trying different workouts from tomorrow, but until now I thought what I was doing was having an effect. Granted, I took a 2 year break from the gym (covid and whatnot) and lost motivation due to the small studio I was living in, but the home workouts I did do gave me more energy, brightened my mood and my day, and just overall gave me a sense of routine and I thought that was great. But my heart has dropped to my stomach now, having heard that it probably had no effect on my body.
Just a little sidenote, but when I was 17-18, I used to go to the gym in my condo everyday for a year or 2. I followed some youtube videos because I had no idea what I was doing or how to use the machines, but I kept it up and tried every day. I didn't look any different, so I guess I assumed that I'd never see changes.
I'll still try though. I've got some videos bookmarked for tomorrow's workout and will attempt to use a towel to induce muscle tension before doing reps. I guess it's all about discipline though, because personally, I find counting so boring and I tend to lose what number I'm on because I'm trying to get through the rep and put my mind on something else. Perhaps the only way to do it is to focus on every movement, even if it bores you and makes exercising unbearable. Who knows?

I followed Blogilates for a long time for a number of reasons, and only recently stopped following her on social media. One thing that struck me about her posts and that you mentioned in the video is that as of right now, she is not recommending this plan to anyone and it is specifically for her own training. However, during her last "90 day journey" 2 or 3 years ago (I believe her purpose at that time was to lose fat and adjust her body composition slightly, although the stated purpose was health and feeling better), she said the same thing. After her 90 day journey finished and she got pretty striking results, she started to share more about the details of the journey, including workout and meal plans. I think it was a year after that first journey ended, she even sold journals online to help people track their own 90 day journeys. There were workout and meal plans that were free as well, but she would encourage people who were going along with the plans to post their own progress pictures and show their own impressive results. I remember looking at the meal plans back then and feeling like it was 1) way too expensive for my budget, and 2) not enough to provide me energy to get through my day.
I'm getting a similar feeling about this journey. A year from now are we going to see more 90 day journals that focus on this particular plan? Even if she is outwardly stating that this is for her and her alone, I wouldn't be surprised if she does encourage other people to embark on similar "journeys" with the help of journals, meal plans, and workout plans when she's done, especially if her own result is visibly impressive or dramatic. I could be completely off the mark, but based on my own observations of how a similar "journey" ended up in the past, I wouldn't be surprised at all.
