How do you feel about this type of content?

    • @mariila5143

It honestly makes me sad. I personally started my fitness journey not knowing ANYTHING about fitness or how to tell whether an excercise would actually be „worth“ doing or not. So I just feel really grateful for people like you or Natacha Oceane educating us about biomecanics, sustainable and effective exercise methods etc. etc.
Thank you. I do not want to know, where I‘d be without people like you and only getting hopelessly mislead by the mass of misinformation out there.

I do think it’s good that they might get people started on their journey but I hate how the internet is absolutely flooded with this type of BS fitness content that actual good and beneficial content is harder to discover. This kind of content did get me into working out but it took a full 6 years before I found my way into real quality training and nutrition information. Until that point, working out was more of a symptom of my ED and body image issues rather than a healthy lifestyle. Honestly so glad for channels like yours for providing quality information and teaching new things to people just starting out as well as those more experienced.

I will say as someone who has struggled with ED’s, that Emi’s content and titles are definitely triggering. I have always had larger calves which I hated (still struggle with this but now it’s just more of a dislike rather than hate), and getting fed misinformation like spot reducing calf fat is not only damaging but a HUGE wasted of time!! I wasted my time with some of her silly workouts only to finally learn that
    a) the only solution to making my calves smaller is by being in a slight calorie deficit long enough to see a change and
    b) my body will decide where it pulls fat from while in a calorie deficit. In other words, can’t spot reduce fat

I got into Emi‘s workouts in March 2021, being a 31-year-old totally aware of the clickbait. Never cared about it and just went with my own pace. Worked out for me really great, completely changed my shape, lost lots of body fat and gained visible muscles. I‘m still a fan of hers, doing her workouts daily. I just advice each and every one to never pressure themselves and to not pay attention to those false quick result promises. Do it in your own pace and develop a healthy fun attitude towards moving your body. It will eventually work out. Give yourself a year or two to reach your goals. And take fitness influencers as an example only loosely. You don’t need to look like them. Don’t idolize them.

Especially for East Asian groups, skinny, almost an anorexic build is considered beautiful. The more bone you show, the more compliments you’ll get. Look at the kpop female idols and how so many girls idolize the tricep-less arms, the rib cages protruding, the 3 inch thigh gap and caving in stomach. All girl idol groups practically have the same, skinny, doll-like shape. Sadly, these idols get ridiculed when the have a teeny bit more curves. hi youre so well-spoken! i used to do emi wong's workouts when i first started working out, and while i am thankful for her videos for making me find the exercise i actually can tolerate and enjoy doing for my health, she actually also likes to promote the saying 'no pain no gain' which always made me feel i had to feel like im in actual pain or the workout doesn't count. only a few years later i learned that we are supposed to engage in movement that we enjoy as that will make it a sustainable healthy habit, instead of working out to achieve something short-term like weight loss and feeling like death every second. im not sure if i was the only one affected by this but this video reminded me of the time i used to do emi's workouts and my thoughts every time i do her workouts. i respect that emi is motivated by that no pain no gain saying but it didn't serve me so i changed to madfit and have worked out with her for a really long time bc she's really good and focuses on form. she never talks about slimming or changing anything, just encourages her viewers and explains how to do the form properly so watching this video actually felt new to me, i forgot such clickbait titles exist on workout videos lol

I was born with strong calves and quads, that’s just my physical structure. I had been doing ballet for 17 years which involves mostly calves and quads work. If anything, my calves looked bigger, as muscles grew over time, and now they have slimed down a bit as I stopped training them altogether and I have no interest in making them grow back.
It is likely that people who’ll follow regularly Emi’s routine will end up having bigger calves, and that would be completely normal, I mean, how much fat can you store in your calves? Their growth has to depend mostly on muscles. Imagine how frustrating that could be for people struggling with their insecurities. Her content is really dangerous on another level.

Also she is blessed with natural more hourglass proportions that make it able for her to sell this image that’s trendy right now, and then people wonder why they don’t look exactly like her despite that her videos imply they should once they follow her routines.

I figured if they enjoy the workouts and aren't negatively impacted by them, it's fine if they keep on doing them. At the same time though, I really wish youtube would crack down on this type of content a bit more. It's so bizarre that as a society, we've gained so much insight and knowledge into very complex topics like quantum physics and what not, yet when it comes to relatively simple things like diet and exercise, there are still millions of people who don't know about progressive overload and energy balance. Instead, they believe in juice cleanses and bizarre youtube workouts. Ugh!

I do love Emi, I'm subscribed and she did help me to get into working out as she was the very first fitness youtuber I subscribed to. However I do agree her vids are very often clickbaity. I felt HORRIBLE after two weeks of doing her workout which promised me amazing results over that period of time, only to not see very big results in myself even though I worked out religiously. I felt like something is wrong with me and I do something bad. It really spiralled me when I was younger. Now I finally have some more patience and know those "results in 2 weeks!!!!" are 99% absolute bullshit. Especially my legs. It took time for me to accept the fact that my endomorph pear shaped body loses weight in my lower belly and legs as the last ones so I focus on working out with greater intensity and strenght. I had to do my own research to realize which exercises are worth it and which are not so I am able to skip some of the more pointless exercises she sometimes shows. Also thank you for this video. I'm fan of Emi but I do appreciate the way you talk about things and I do agree with you. Subscribed :) I like being critical of people I like and things I do and see more perspectives. @@nimrasaeed807 my word of advice is to give it time. I would obsess over getting super thin in short period of time. You need to accept that it will take a long time BUT I think it's better to enjoy your fave cake, snack or whatever in moderation than to completely cut it off to achieve your dream figure asap. When I did that, I lost weight quickly, but then I binged massively because I missed my fave snacks. I gained twice my weight because of that. So rather cut off calories slowly little by little, enjoy your fave snack in moderation (hell I do it every other day because I get the taste but I don't overeat) and you will be fine. He is right, you can't spot reduce fat and I learned it the hard way. People tend to obsess over their "flawed parts" and only look for progress in them. I did that too. I was frustrated and demotivated when I didn't see change in my legs and belly. But!! My core got stronger, my whole body is stronger now, I can do cardio without feeling dizzy after five minutes, and I walk faster. Celebrate those changes as well!! Losing fat isn't easy and esp not something you achieve during two weeks or even months. I still workout with Emi - esp her cardio, dancing and yoga/stretch videos. Even leg exercises during days when I feel very tired for intense training but I don't want to do nothing. You can still workout like that, just add some diversity of other youtubers as well (I can't afford personal trainer atm nor nutritionist). Increase intensity and lenght of ur exercises little by little. Do some strenght training because lots of women forget or don't want to do that. It will be fine really :) Lots of love and luck to you angel!!

You can absolutely get "slim strong legs", but its not at the gym. I know cause i was a ballerina for 15 years and your training is the opposite of hypertrophy, its just body weight strength and insane muscle endurance. We would do at least 72 calf raises in one set to strengthen our feet and legs. Seeing these clickbait non-existent workouts is frustrating because it's just not doing anything. If you want to get strong but lean, try ballet because you will improve your strength and you wont get "bulky" (although that's wtv, get jacked ladies!). I struggled and still struggle with my weight and body acceptance and I followed emi's workouts when I struggled with obesity and she helped me get down to a small, but I also had an ED which caused me to have an unhealthy relationship with food and still sometimes does, and I liked her content because she was also open about her ED struggles and being body dysmorphic, which makes me wonder if that's the reason why younger and more impressionable people follow her workouts, because she got over it and worked through it eventually. Its misleading because my body and her body and genetically different which, and since that is the 'in' in my culture it's hard when you don't fit that standard. Thank you for sharing this because I really needed it, my body is naturally curvier and I need to accept and work with that. I am 18 years old and I have a lot to learn about health and fitness, and I still struggle to this day with ED and body dysmorphia, promoting these unrealistic body goals are really damaging to my mental health and many others who are also impressionable like me, I hope many other people also get a chance to see this and we can make a change and educate more people on this issue. Also can I suggest you look at yoga channels and assess their content and whether or not their advice is true or a myth? My YT recommendations that were usually filled with unscientific fitness videos to look like supermodels are now filled with body positive knowledgeable youtubers like Natacha Oceane. Then your video popped up on my recommendations, and I'm glad it was recommended to me. Thank you very much for explaining such topic with kindness and care, I know it's easy to bash people for disagreeing with the content, but you try to understand more than just what's beneath the surface.

This is sick honestly. First of all, us women already have a big pressure in maintaining or keeping up with the beauty standards with this video’s it a bit too much in my opinion ... girls, u need to know that big calves isn’t ugly, having a invisible collarbone or a soft one is definetely ok. I grew up in Philippines where people are petite and have small body structure. So it was a norm for them to see petite figures and thin arms and legs. I was 5’11 when i was 14 and thats really tall especially in a country where average height for women is 5’1 . Despite being 60 kg (which is almost under weight according to bmi) i was called overweight. People there (not all btw) are blind to the fact that other body types except petite and small exist. Because i am broader that the usual girls there people would often call me fat despite me having small fat percentage in the body... it worsened when i gained weight and became 70 kg (which is a very healthy weight for my height) even my mom called me obese... and i always explain to them that i am not and that they should not compare me to how other girls my age looks and weights because im bigger than them. They would often restrict how much food i eat and force me to diet when i dont need to. I told them that i am not over eating just because i eat more than them. I need all this food to function properly. My mom and sister are litterally 1ft shorter than me and they compared how much they ate to mine. I had a teacher saying me fat when i was close to one of my friend. She compared our wrist and mine was bigger of course. What she doesn’t realize is that my wrist are litterally bones ... when u touch it its directly bones already but again due to ignorance they cant understand it. Then i also followed this kind of tutorials with matching starvation for months which took me to 50 kg which is very under weight. But guess what they told me? “Thank god, u finnally lost all ur extra weight . U look much better now” without even knowing im already suffering from an eating disorder. My waistline became 21 inches and im litterally becoming pale due to lack of food. And they didn’t even consulted my health and just praised me for finally fitting the “mold” they made for everyone.
What im trying to say here is dont try to follow all this tutorials online. U know what ur body is. Dont try to fit the standard and the mentality of skinny=pretty. Dont try to crash diet not only is it unhealthy but it also will make u bigger in the future accompanying with mental health issues. If u really wanna lose weight do it slow and steady. U can eat alot but make sure u have balanced meals. U dont need to starve urself to lose weight. Just doing simple physical exercises a day like dancing can help u. No need for u to spend hours in the gym.
Think about long term results rather than losing 10 kg now then gaining 15 since the diet is unsustainable . Don’t expect fast results because what comes easily goes easily as well
For people thinking they look ugly because their fat . NO YOU ARE NOT! Fat is just fat. Pretty is pretty. No weight can determine how good u look.
Also dont think that just because u wanna lose weight u hate ur body rn, u can love ur body but still wanna change it. Like a bag sometimes u need a small one sometimes u need a big one. Dont think that ur agreeing with the standards when ur trying to lose weight.
Also dont believe people when they say u support bad habit when u say being fat is ok. Because u are not! Even if they are unhealthy , people have no right to judge them for it and definitely should not tell them what to do with their body. If you dont like their habit no matter what u do just shut ur mouth
Also for skinny people . Dont believe ut when people say stuff like “ur supporting anorexia” “u dont look good” “too thin” . Do what u want and what ur body needs .
U dont need to be skinny to be pretty. U dont need to be fat to support body positivity . In the end of the day do what makes U happy and dont let other opinions change it.

I think Asian women are even more influenced by negative body image. I remember these "trends" when I was growing up.
    (Here are a few examples:
A4 waist-if you put an A4 paper in front of your waist, your waist should not be wider than the paper
90 degree angled shoulders-your shoulders should be 90 degrees, like a right angle
collar bone challenge-your collar bone should be prominent enough that you can hold a pool of water in the dip
comic waist-basically a pose similar to a comic where your waist is flexible enough to bend back almost to 90 degrees
    etc etc...)
There are charts that state women's ideal bodyweight/height ratio, all below a healthy bmi. You only see the representation of extremely thin women on media, whereas the healthy weight and plus-sized women are often not portrayed as pretty, female idols and actors are criticised if they gain weight, and praised if they remain thin. I go to malls and they don't cater to my size (Even tho I'm a medium in UK.) the sales would straight up tell me nothing fits me and that was traumatizing for me, a teenager at the time.
And in Asian cultures, it is socially acceptable to make comments about other people's bodies, it's almost like commenting about the weather, it's considered casual. People comment on each other's bodies all the time, and they are blunt about it.
So when I see Asian influencers, like Emi Wong, Linda Sun, Alivia, I can see how they are the victims of the toxic culture, but in some way, our mindsets are so damaged that we normalize it and we become the upholder of the exact toxic culture that we hate so much. It's truly sad to see.

I grew up in a toxic environment where too much emphasis was placed on looks. Being short and wide, I didn't look like any of my classmates. I thought I was fat all my life, dieted most of my life, and still, at age 53, have been reducing my calories to an unsafe level just to lose that last 3-5 lbs. that I've been chasing for over 2 years now. I've wrecked my metabolism, and my relationship with food is completely warped. I'm trying to heal myself from all of the damage that's been done by living in a 'you'll never be good enough' culture, trying to recover from my ED's, and go the opposite way - since I can't lose those last few pounds I'm going to start eating at a surplus and hitting the weights to build muscle. I want thick legs and I want to be strong. You are a gem and it's so refreshing that a male truly cares and exposes all the fakers out there so those of us looking for real help can find it. I love when you said that we should all just look the way we want for ourselves. Thank you! 🥰

Introduction: I laughed when you hit your hand. Please try to avoid destroying more furniture, you are going to run out soon. YES on the progressive overload this week, always love to see it! I look forward to you calling out Emi’s “problematic” bits coming up.
Slim Calves Quick: Just from the title, I’m already not going to like this. That bodybuilder story sounds ridiculous, but definitely not the first ridiculous thing I’ve seen claimed in the Fitness Industry unfortunately :( You can’t rap, but you can do spoken word well, you should give a performance sometime on a video!
Effectively Training the Calves/Clickbait: Straightforward and to the point here, no need to complicate it. I agree that Emi definitely seems to be preying on people’s insecurities, although I think that’s far too common with influencers. Good perspective here on how to be more “responsible” with Clickbait, as it is a necessary evil for channel growth unfortunately.
10 Min Exercises: Again, I already know I’m not going to like this section. It definitely is going after people’s insecurities.
Body Image/Mental Health: I always find this to be the most valuable stuff from you, it’s how I discovered the channel years ago, and it’s something I know your audience appreciates that you still talk about. Always wholesome, always telling the truth, and always looking out for people’s best interests! :)
Exercises/Comments Section: Won’t say much here, just always appreciate your Biomechanics education here and calling out suboptimal movements. I don’t want to come across as too negative either, but this just seems like she’s moving her arms around and not getting any benefit from it. I can tell your genuine disappointment in her content and the dangerous ideas in her Comments section.
Conclusion: Already said it, very valuable stuff from you as always! No complaints from me, thanks for all that you do for your audience!

And even more so, get SO much money for it. So many influencers are not qualified at all in the areas that they talk about, but then 90% of them tend to defend their videos with " I am not qualified, a dietician or anything related to it, I am just here to share my experiences and hope it will help you". I mean, it's good that they don't lie about it, but I find it always such an easy escape route... and it takes away the responsibility blame.
