  • I've looked at Blogilates (Cassey Ho) in a few videos previously and each time I have done so, I am often told that her older Pilates content used to be of much higher quality than the content she uploads today. In this video, we have a look at Cassey's UA-cam and compare some of her older content with the content she's uploading today...

Should one prioritize recovery or the amount of workouts done per week. IE: Most weeks I'm so busy I can only get 2 maybe 3 really good workouts in and then 2 more lower quality workouts. Should I just cut out the last 2 and swap them for rest days? Would that possibly be more effective?

How important is stretching actually? and when does it make the most sense to do, before or after the workout? I hear so many different preferences. But scientifically, does it really help against sore muscles? is it necessary?

This was actually eye-opening because Blogilates is the one who got me into working out about 10 years ago, and my reaction whenever I see her recent content is “she used to be better, her workouts used to be EXCELLENT”. But revisiting them now with way more information I’m realizing her old information wasn’t really that great? I just remember them being great because I knew less I guess. I’m still grateful for her old videos because she was super cheerful and encouraging and that’s important for a total beginner who finds fitness and working out intimidating, but I also wonder how much stronger/healthier I’d be now if I started with good information and didn’t waste years following that kind of content.

Even if you like pilates there are better pilates instructors on youtube. I like Move with Nicole workouts when I want something more like yoga/pilates/barre over heavy weighted work.
Though when I mentioned older content I meant around 10 years ago before she moved to LA. I stopped working out with her around 2014 because she was getting way too fake and there was a dramatic change in difficulty between 2012ish and 2014. I liked her early stuff because there wasn't much pilates content on youtube in 2010. It's way better now.

I'm so glad somebody else is saying this so I don't have to...because I definitely have reverse recency bias when it comes to her. I do feel like she was less disingenuine earlier on, but objectively, her content was not as amazing as I remember. It's like revisiting songs you loved in your early teens just to realize the music was not that good at best and objectively bad at worst (lol somebody tell me I'm not the only one pls).

I think this has happened with many people. THIS. I always see people saying “she used to be so great it’s a shame she’s changed!” And I would just think…she’s always been like this. All those little weird arm circle movements were the core of her workouts since the beginning. Pop Pilates was so gimmicky to me. Yeah it hurt, but as a workout it just wasn’t that great. That’s why I was glad to learn Harry was going to dig into her earlier content. I had a feeling he wouldn’t be impressed by that either lol.

Cassey is always a hard topic for me because she introduced me to exercising. I loved her energy. I bought her activewear and Piit 28 program (which was very hard!). Her titles always bothered me though. "get rid of your saddlebags, lose your muffintop" But I also LOVED her vulnerable videos about how you're worth more than the number on the scale or the size of your jeans. Cassey in my opinion is a product of her environment. She isn't a malicious person, she's lost and at this point, I don't think will be returning to her old form.
Cassey was at her best when fitness youtube wasn't so saturated. Pop Pilates (Pre 2014) was simply amazing for young girls. Including myself. It was upbeat, not boring, and got me moving. The issue is she felt this need to reinvent herself and that meant trying to sound smarter and look more appealing when the youtube fitness spear was becoming very dudebro. (around 2014-2018) She didn't like being the 'girly' fitness girl. Each year Cassey keeps trying to be things she's not. It breaks my heart because I remember the girl from 2013 who would blast Little mix in the background, tell me to get some soup cans, and start moving. I remember the 3 min song challenges that inspired me to do more. I remember Cassey before the consumerism, and tik tok, and attempts at constant dieting etc...
I will say one thing to her defense, Cassey faced such hard ridicule during her time of vulnerability that it changed her to live these unhealthy patterns. She is an example of when criticism becomes hate. Now the right kind of criticism is coming her way and she doesn't know how to differentiate the two. Content creators who wish to call out these influencers tend to go wildly out of line. I'm happy to see those tides are shifting. Your channel, for example, carries much respect and empathy and I think if that was applied to Cassey 6 years ago then she may still be on the right path.

I grew up watching blogilates on UA-cam and doing her workouts, following her diet tips. She made me believe I still had to "tone" and "slim" my body despite my already small body size back then (90-100lbs, 5"2). Her content gave me the impression that I needed lean arms, a slim stomach, a thigh gap and small calves....looking back at pictures of myself back then I was already really small, but she made me think having any sort of "flab" was wrong. Following her content over the years, I would listen to her food swaps and diet habits, like eating rice cakes, bell peppers and egg "bread"; eating a banana if I'm hungry, and if it doesn't satisfy me I shouldn't be eating etc. It really gave me an unhealthy mindset. Having grown up now, went to university and graduated as a nutritionist, I'm doing all I can to unpack what unqualified influencers like her teach the general public (when it comes to food and nutrition). Yes, she has gotten people to work out and increase their NEAT, but overall I think her nutrition tips over the decade have been really harmful whether people recognize it or not.

People mentioning that they watched her as a teenager and the emphasis she put on being slim brings back memories I didn’t even know I had. 😳 Honestly, I think she struggled with her own body (which I know she’s mentioned recently, but I almost want to go back and watch her past videos to see if she kind of talked about it then). I think ingesting her content at that age was super harmful in the long run.

A lot of her content was image based. I remember she’d even put the words “thigh gap” in titles on her blog, like “If You Want a Thigh Gap, Do This.” She comes from a long history of disordered eating and body image and has unfortunately carried all that with her into her content.

That first clip of her doing the prayer-hands workout really took me back to being a 15 year old doing leg lifts in my bedroom at night so I could get a thigh gap. I think her type of content just gets more and more toxic now that she can make reels and tiktok videos that don't require any amount of context. She doesn't have to provide the "why", she just uses her dubious credibility to push misinformation on the next generation of vulnerable teenage girls.

  • @rubyb.4007

When I first got into fitness a coworker recommended Blogilates but I couldn't get into it/Cassey for 2 reasons:
    1. Her workouts were too hard. For example, if trying a video focusing just on "toning arms" (like the example at 8:10) I could make it maybe 5 minutes before fully fatigued and then I felt like, "Gosh I'm so out of shape I'll never get there." But now I know a lot of her exercises don't even assist with actually building muscle, so I had those negative feelings over not being able to do an exercise that didn't even offer the benefits I thought. I think she could do better at explaining that pilates is more for getting the heartrate up not so much adding strength.
    2. When she went on her journey she didn't do her own workouts. When Cassey went on her health/weightloss journey a couple years ago, she started dance cardio, lifting, etc. I could be wrong but I don't remember seeing her talk about doing Blogilates as part of the process. So, if you don't turn to your own workouts when you want to make a lifestyle change why should I? As a new trainer/nutritionist now, I don't ask/recommend clients do things I wouldn't do myself.

    • @Failmu

Completely agree with your 2nd point! I never understood that either. After I saw how her body transformed from lifting weights, I always wondered why she never lifted weights in her videos. I guess she was targeting people who didn't have dumbbells but I just outgrew the bodyweight exercises and needed some resistance. I wish she would focus more on lifting because I did enjoy her positivity.

I thought that there are peer-reviewed studies that show and explain that pilates can help improve flexibility, mobility, core strength, muscle strength (this is different than building the size of muscles), as well as several other benefits (i.e. injury prevention, improvement of posture, etc,.) I give Cassey credit because she is one of the first people who got me into working out when I was in my late teens and early 20's. A lot of her workouts were actually too hard for me when I first started, but I loved her positivity and her encouragement. She was fun to workout with. I think the problem is that she didn't stick to the things that worked. She tried to evolve with social media/Tik Tok culture (which I hate anyway) and do more "5 things that will help you get a thigh gap (number 5 will SHOCK you)" type of posts, which are not only untrue but extremely dangerous for younger people.
She also got a lot of unwarranted hate over losing weight or something, which was absolutely not her fault, but instead of ignoring it or just issuing one statement about it, she got constantly defensive and I think a lot of her insecurities started to come out. Not that people should feel the need to hide what they're really experiencing - it's perfectly fine to be honest - but when I would watch her videos, I would start to feel that negativity through her, and that wasn't what I wanted. I think she's a great person, I think she has a good brand and has done some great stuff for getting people into exercise, but I've personally outgrown her, and I think she's forgotten some of the elements that really made her content pop.

I completely agree with you. She also got me into working out in my late teens and I do genuinely love her enthusiasm and still find working out with her fun. But I absolutely hate all of her Tik Tok/UA-cam shorts, they're awful! So toxic and unhelpful, and she's putting minimal effort into these small videos while essentially neglecting her UA-cam channel and the people who got her to where she is today.
And yes she's definitely the kind of person who focuses way too much on how others feel about her. And I get it, I think being in the public eye like that would be so tough (I certainly couldn't do it) but surely by now she would have grown a thick enough skin to be able to brush it off and discern the hate from the constructive. For ages it seemed like every post was about how people were having a go at her but she was doing it for herself and here's a picture of her in a bikini. It was exhausting to see on every channel every day and I was very close to unfollowing her.

Just hearing Blogilates makes me shudder, I had anorexia in 2011-2014 and watched Cassey religiously. All of the thigh gap/love handle/etc videos, the time she trained to do a bikini comp, the food videos, and the way the workouts were sometimes made for questionable reasons e.g. there was a HIIT video to do after going to a buffet... it felt really toxic imo and it took a long time to learn that fitness doesn't have to be whatever she was pushing.

I was hoping we (society) would leave behind in 2021 thinking that critiquing ideas and work means you are attacking the person. Disagreeing with something someone says or does is not threatening this person's entire existance and value as a human. This is a core issue in society and social media where people are "brands", its no longer a marketing department behind a logo and stock ticker.
Harry you've not said anything against Cassie or any of the influencers as people that I've seen. If anything you really do split the human and the content up, even on the natty or not lists. Props to you, it's very hard to do and you navigate that well as you grow your channel

like many said, cassey also inspired me to workout regularly and i've been working out about 6 days a week ever since 2015. again, it's hard to believe that the first fitness influencer that inspired me to be healthy had this sort of content but again, i didn't know better. despite this, i am grateful that she made exercising a fun routine for me that i was willing to continue, and i used to watch all of her new fitness videos. she also used to say that weight does not equal to how strong i am, and ever since,, i've never checked my weight (only except when i had to, for blood tests and such).
i have to mention that cassey entered a bikini (or similar) competition where she exercised 4+ hours a day and ate less than 1000 calories in my memory, which then spiralled her into an eating disorder which i think she revealed around 2016-17. so some of the older content of her diets and cleanses do reflect the hardship she was going through. however, because those videos are vulnerable to being exposed to new viewers like you, many may believe that is really what she''s promoting, so i do believe that while that should be considered, it's not appropriate for her to leave the content on a worldwide platform promoting unhealthy diets or mindsets.
that being said, i loved her hiit workouts because it was very difficult and challenging and not like other hiit workouts i've seen at the time, and watched her vids from time to time until around 2-3 years ago when i completely fell out once she got into tiktok and talked non-stop about her diet/transformation for her body. although i do sympathise that she may still be going through some sort of body image issues (which stemmed from comments on how she doesn't look 'fit' like fitness youtubers) and has a large obsession with how her body looks, it became too triggering to me as someone who experienced a very close relative who suffered from an ED.

I saw Cassey’s recent upload and I was shocked at the quality as she was my catalyst to fitness but her quality was so much more challenging and effective. I mean I had to look at her calendar and I saw barely any of her much harder workout videos on there. I remember her 1000 squat video and her core exercises along with 100 burpees were demanding. I just feel like she is kinda cheating her new audience

The 1000 squat video and 100 burpees are not very good for a healthy way to exercise. Yeah, is hard, but bad overall for the body. The articulations, tendons can suffer from stress fatigue and one might not suffer right at the moment, but certainly will pay later on. Like in food, the poison is in the portion.

I personally have no experience with Blogilates' content apart from what I saw on this channel but I started working out after a few years of not going to the gym with Pamela Reif's workouts in early 2019 and I think her content is somewhat similar to Blogilates'. I felt really out of shape then and it was a good (re)start into fitness for me, so I am thankful to her for that, but it only took me a few weeks to realize that her workouts weren't really getting me anywhere in terms of building muscle and getting stronger. I'm sure a video like this one would have helped me to discover that sooner, and it will hopefully help others who are just starting out on their fitness journey, so thank you Harry! Thankfully I found Caroline Girvan in the early summer of 2019, her workouts are amazing, I still do 2 or 3 of them every week at home even though I also really enjoy going to the gym and lifting heavy (again) now.

Not sure if anyone will see this, but I’m one of those people that started with Cassie. About a year and a half ago I’d just had my 3rd kid and for the first time ever the weight wasn’t falling off. I had ZERO prior fitness knowledge. I literally just typed in “weightless workout” and started Blogilates. And boy did it whip off that extra fat. I felt great. But then I started to want to progress from there. So I started adding weights and she started adding routines with weights so I mainly did those. Last week I had a realization that it’s time to try something else. I want to build my muscles up. From what I’ve done so far I enjoy the hell out of it. Here’s my questions/issues: I’m kind of warped on fitness in general. My only reference in my head for what’s “correct” is Blogilates. So who’s safe to turn to? I cannot stand “influencer” culture (tbh some of her gimmicky stuff had started to bother me, as a person who avoids tik tok and Instagram like they’re the plague.. just not my thing) I just want someone informative and trustworthy. I realize it’s probably more complex than I’m making it out to be. But I just don’t know where to start. I don’t know if I’m doing enough now, or too much. Because that hour of Pilates was “enough” everyday because my calendar said it was. I feel lost without someone saying “do this, this, and this video today and that’s enough.” And that’s a habit I want to break. I want to use my time wisely. And most of all I want to continue what I’ve begun: to watch and feel my body get stronger. I see myself having a lifelong relationship with fitness and Blogilates was a wonderful jumping point for me. But here I am, literally not even a week after making the decision that it’s time to move on, and I’m pretty damned lost.

And when you showed us the "didn't eat for 3 days juice cleanse" video, I remembered myself being young and thinking that's the right way to go. I had periods of not eating enough and I liked it. And those videos were so dangerous for me. I'm now in a much better place. My training shifted to weight training, some calisthenics and sports I enjoy, like rock climbing and kayaking and even trail running. I couldn't run before, because my body didn't have enough energy to run. I'm heavier than ever (due to muscle mass increase) and also happier with my body, cause I'm so much stronger now. It's not just about weight, guys. Go on your own journey and listen to your body.

I love Cassie, and I still do her exercises because change scares me, but watching your videos has made me realize somethings:
1.) I think Cassie's target audience is beginners through and through. She wants to encourage new people to fitness
2.) She miiiiight maaaayybbeeee have an exercise addiction?
3.) She might want to find a happy medium between following toxic fitness trends in order to stay relevant and actually arming people with information and mindsets that DON'T support that culture, but there is no happy medium for those two because they are inherently opposite in value.
I think it's pretty clear that once you learn more about fitness Blogilates is only a stepping stone to other types of fitness content. At it's core, pilates *isn't* for muscle building. It's for muscle retention and being lean. It was originally created for injured soldiers to stay on top of their fitness while bedridden. Once you get used to the actual act of working out and realize you don't hate it (like many people who come to her channel) you need to move on to other sources that fit your fitness needs. Pilates is not going to build muscle like weight-lifting will. It never will. Cassie's own body goals are not the same as that of her viewer's either. And she knows that. She's an instructor. She wants to bring new people in. But if her goals are to gain muscle, she's not going to do her own workouts. And she doesn't expect other people to stay for that reason either. I think that's why she's starting to release weight sets and teaching people how to use them. I think she wants to move into more advanced types of fitness content for her brand. But it's going to be very very slow, because she doesn't want her target audience [newbies] to be left behind.

Going for brevity again. From everything we’ve seen on Blogilates in the past, I’m not expecting great things from her, even if some of her content in the past was actually of higher quality. The part about tolerating you and your videos seems to be a charming and slightly self-deprecating bit that you do to express your appreciation, but it always strikes me as wrong somehow. I can’t image a situation in which your company would be only tolerated. I don’t know. Who am I to tell you to change your little outro?! You do you. It just feel uncomfortable because it doesn’t match my perception of you at all! You are an absolute joy to watch. 🤗

I watched that juice cleanse video and it influenced me to try it myself. It was miserable and any weight I lost came right back. Glad I’ve since found better nutrition and fitness content.

Yep as many others have said before she got me into fitness as a late teen over 10 yrs ago now, but not in a healthy way as I followed her fitness journey it just made me feel I need to be smaller with abs...I even fell into the low carb diet fad diet based on her diet tips, but honestly I was already an 8-10 and did not need to get any smaller!
I think she has changed over time, if only her attitude towards potential criticism from her audience.

This is so interesting. Just because something burns or feels hard doesn't mean it's doing anything for your goals. Kind of min-blowing. There is so much content on UA-cam that seems legitimate, and so it's crucial to research.

I used to do blogilates workout religiously 8 years ago for 4 months. That halfass cobra is what she is been teaching on channel since forever lols. She doesn’t get worse or better. She is just now exposed to a larger audience with real knowledge. She actually did inspired me to exercise and grow my love with fitness however her content doesn’t serve my purpose anymore.

During cancer treatments I used her weightless arm workouts. I could not lift anything due to surgeries etc. My arms looked great. I would assume that it is because of the years and years of resistance training. I do not know if this is a myth.

Hey omg 😳 how are u doing now ???? I wen Thru bad chemo radiation ☢️ n surgery too. I immediately understand the Weak , helpless feeling . Ugh 😩 I needed help for I get out of bath , or stairway some point .
      Dont use her weightless arm
Workout tho. I did occupational therapy ,,, the therapist n avertly Address do not make certain moves .So when Cassie was teaching the moves AGAINST body science. That d moves r clearly Wrong.
This dude is calling her out , he’s onto something .
For example the weightless arm move . When we r sick in couch/ bed . Our body cave in seize in. Our arms n neck shoulders would cave into a ball . We need to reset , to ope chest n balance better .
When we raise arms , it will raise shoulders not dropping . It will make neck shrink more . Ur stomach will pop forward , yr breath will become small . U r not going have the proper dynamic stretch. Then the elbows together , when move , it will REALLY hurt ur Shoukder soft joints . It will have them shaved off fast 💨 permenantly.
She is scam . All fake snake oil

My take away from your video is I’ve been misinformed about exercising for quite some time. I ascribed to the “ no pain no gain, and thought” if it ain’t aint hurting’ you ain’t workin’ but this isn’t always the case as you’ve stated. As for “ Blogilates” my draw to her is her positive attitude and the ease of the work outs and how as someone who was beginning to work out , just getting use to the “ pain” of exercising and making a routine she really helped me feel motivated to get moving. And I think just beginning blogilate is a safe starting point.

Thank you for your positive and constructive criticism. I happen to like Cassey. Her videos helped me during the pandemic 😷
I enjoy working out. I frequent the gym at least 3 times a week if not 4x, so when everything was closed down, Cassey kept me fit. And till this day I do my workout at the gym and finish up my routine with a few of her videos ☺️🫶🏼.
Nonetheless, I see your point and will keep it in mind.
    Thank you

My biggest issue with her more recent stuff is that I feel like she takes so many of the valid criticism that people have, lumps them in with the group of people that hate on her, and then says that people just don't want to see a woman or color succeed.

Everytime I see trainers and other fitness people critique her and explain why her information isn't good, there are always a ton of people defending her saying that the moves really work because they could definitely feel the pain afterwards. I think more credible people in the fitness industry need to shout it from the rooftops that pain does not mean that you are training effectively. It's such a dangerous misconception and people can seriously injure themselves. I really respect and appreciate that you're explaining that as you critique her content!

I think when people say they used to like Cassie’s videos, it’s not that the video content was necessarily better.. but maybe that they were in a different stage of their wellness journey than they are now. I was one of those people that said that.. then when you showed her older videos it made me think about where I was knowledge wise back then when I did follow her (7ish years ago); me personally, I was lacking a lot of the knowledge I have now to spot fitness BS when I see it. That may be true for others remembering her old content being helpful or “good”. Just a thought I had.

Interesting to see how many people are saying they started their workout journey with Blogilates. I started my fitness journey some time in the late eighties with a Jane Fonda video 🤣 (yes I’m your middle aged subscriber). If you can find one of her workouts uploaded to UA-cam it would be interesting to get your take on it.

I watched two intermediate ones of hers on YT and holy shit were they hard lol The only thing I didn't like was all the weird wrist flip flopping she did as a warmup. I'd think that's asking for an overuse injury. But her cardio one was very challenging!

  • @butlers4life4141

This is my opinion on Cassey. I followed her back in 2016 and stopped around 2018. I came back after her juice cleanse and thought something was wrong, but it was just for bloating and weight loss. Then when she did her 90 Day Journey (I'm proud of what she accomplished) and after completing it, she turned into someone who relied so much on numbers and exercise for vanity purposes rather than feeling good for working out.
Her old content is a mixed bag with some good and working with dumbbells not so good due to going way too fast with them. But definitely not focused on numbers and how you look after working out.
Today, I saw her post about when she was in a bikini competition and wanting to get muscles back from when she was in the competition after trying on a bikini she had during that time.
I think she is a great person, but to me she seems to act like how when someone loses weight they shove it in your face and look down upon others that disagree with her opinion.

She (and so many others) promote fairly useless workouts that appear to make you looked “toned” but in reality are from them having a low body fat percentage. I am included in this camp- the pump from body weight burning movements appears dramatic because there’s very little body fat covering up the muscles generally. I can see the appeal if you’re brand new.. because these moves I suppose are progressive overload initially.
I do believe that there are many body weight exercise forms that are effective and I’d love to see you showcase/analyze high quality creators in this area.

I thought that Pilates workouts help tone the body. am I wrong? maybe its just using body weight and not actual weights. peer-reviewed studies explain that pilates can help improve flexibility, mobility, core strength, muscle strength (this is different than building the size of muscles), as well as several other benefits (i.e. injury prevention, improvement of posture, etc,.)

Cassey now promotes weight lifting on Instagram but as much as pilates .. she herself doesn't seek results from pilates. I remember doing her workouts and getting SO tired to do anything else.. I also remember crying on the mat while she went on ..but that was in a plank so maybe I was out of shape..
