  • Blogilates (Cassey Ho) has just completed her 90 day journey in which she was trying to regain lost muscle and rebuild her relationship with herself and training. In her concluding blog post, Cassey states how she's unhappy with the results and feels as if she's failed this challenge that she set for herself. In this video, I analyse the journey and give my thoughts on what could've been done differently/better!

I feel like she designed this for her followers and not for herself. The blunt truth is that many, many women (her primary audience) love dieting and fitness challenges. Many bounce from one to the other. But yet, they also want to relate to failure. So it's suspicious that she created something very much designed to fail when she should know better. Hell, *I* know better and I'm not even a certified PT (yet). My take is that she designed it to fail so that her audience can respond "awww. Me too!!". And then she can start another, better designed challenge that has a reasonable chance of success. It is also possible this stuff is all being designed by her sponsors/management. I'm pretty cynical. I do hope that if anyone followed her did get at least something positive out of it.

As you mentioned, I think Cassey had done soooooo much work during her journey and I think she should be proud. However, I think she may need to think that sometimes mental and physical changes may not be able to get "fixed" in such a short time. Isn't it a bit too much to expect yourselves to change behaviors or thought patterns in such a short time? I am stressed out by just thinking about Cassey's pressure to change for her audience. I am very concerned about all the fitness workouts that highlight a specific time frame and specific results. I hope Cassey will be able to feel liberated one day to just train for the enjoyment and have a balanced lifestyle.

Exactly, training for strength (ie powerlifting), muscle hypertrophy, and prepping for a bikini show are three different things that require different programs. The fact that she just threw these words together and thinks that she can do all three at the same time in a short period of time means that she doesn’t understand the basics and that her journey was just mumbo jumbo.

Cassey's biggest downfall is that she is no longer doing things for herself. Everything she does is to prove the naysayers wrong. What this has done is simply put her in this position of if she fails, it's the "negativity online that's affected her." Legit, that is a reason she lists in her blog why month 3 felt like a failure to her. She does take accountability for *some* things but at the end of the day to put it very very crudely ...she smells her own farts and blames the dog. She didn't fail that's the amusing part. And, to be honest I think she's very aware of this. She's been grasping for validation, she wants to feel like a victorious victim because if she comes out that way it will frame all those haters as mean bullies, not concerned experts who have valid criticisms. And her followers eat it up. They'll follow her plans and wonder why they can't look like Cassey. They wonder why certain things didn't work and they'll twist themselves into dangerous eating disorders. And because Cassey has made the valid criticism appear more like judgmental shouting none of them will seek better sources. Cassey is the one and only source.
Cassey is genuinely deep into her own potion. Unlike the deceptive trash that lives out there, Cassey is genuine. That's what makes this so sad.

I’ve said this before, but I’m gonna say it again. I got into fitness almost two years back through Blogilates. I did no research. I just began. I was too overwhelmed (just had a baby) and unhappy to care WHICH program I started, I simply started. Fast forward to a couple months ago. Cassie posted her newest 90 plan. I had been toying with weights for a couple months and really wanted to dive in deeper. I had full intentions of following her workout plan. Then I stumbled across your video on her and my life really did change. I began to actually research and find information. Fast forward several months. My body has made HUGE changes. My knees don’t hurt anymore. I’m using heavier and heavier weights. I’m thankful for Blogilates for bringing me into fitness, and I’m thankful to be out of Blogilates now.

Cassie has exhibited patterns of disordered eating in the past. Her excessive amount of "muscle" gain in the first 30 days is more likely the replenishment of muscle glycogen than it is muscle. Muscle glycogen registers as muscle mass on a Dexa scan.... and if she was depleted due to under eating or being low carb, this rebound would be misleading.

I used to really love Cassey and her workouts, but increasingly over the past couple years she's started to change. She seems to be fixated on her way of doing things and refuses to listen to any critique. The point about how much muscle she can gain in a couple months being the main thing.
I do think she still has an unhealthy relationship to food + exercise despite what she says. She's obsessed with doing things for external validation and 'proving' something to other people, this blog post being exhibit A.
What really bothers me is the constant stubborn and dismissive attitude. When I first found her, I liked that she was focused on doing challenging workouts. I liked that she was fit but not obsessed with being thin. It helped me focus on working out for health instead of aesthetics, especially since aesthetic goals are not always achievable or maintainable. Now she's done a 180 and is telling her followers - mostly young women, who are more likely than any other group to develop an eating disorder - to fixate on the numbers and the visual results.

I think her significant “lean tissue” gain is easily explained by a buildup of glycogen for 3 reasons: 1) She was likely eating a low carb diet before the journey, so her glycogen store was low at start and it increased when she increased her carb intake for her journey. 2) Her new workout volume was very high, so her body responded by storing extra glycogen. 3) She built maybe 1 to 2 pounds of muscle, which added more space to store glycogen. All three contributed to a significant increase in “lean tissue.” If she reverts back to a low carb diet, she will lose some “lean tissue” because her glycogen will be reduced, similar to the weight loss experienced by people who switch to a low carb/keto diet. I think her results in month 1 is mostly her body’s adaptation to her new workout program and diet. Results from month 2 and 3 are more realistic for what actual muscle gain would look like.
Her program was so unsustainable that basically she couldn’t even follow it herself in month 3, hence hardly any change in month 3.

I have a long history of bulimia and anorexia nervosa and it's quite obvious to me that this is disordered behaviour despite her intentions. I feel that she has a responsibility to her audience and she may be oblivious to the damage she's doing to herself and others. Especially when it was supposed to be a self love journey, the fact she could be dragging people with body disordered pasts down that road is frustrating me immensely.
These are things that have helped me keep this a positive journey, hopefully they're helpful to anyone else with a history of eating disorders.
    .
    1. Keep your deficits small. I don't recommend having large deficits or ever getting to the point you feel hungry. Remembering how accomplished i felt from ignoring that feeling in the past, i don't give my mind the opportunity to revisit that.
    2. I do not document, detail, record stats measurements or meal plan. OCD and eating disorders go hand in hand and documenting everything is getting to cosy with that demon. I would advise you to track macros and calories if in a deficit that's all.
    3. Don't measure, weigh or scan yourself on a regular basis. While someone without a history with eating disorders or body dysmorphia can probably do these things without fear, if you find yourself placing your worth in a number which is going to fluctuate throw them out. I would advise taking a photo when you begin and every two to three months. (Your own reflection in the mirror can lie to you if you have body dysmorphia i find photos to be much more reliable then my reflection)
    4. Set attainable goals. I knew id be harder on myself then most, i struggle with perfectionism. Don't strive to do the unacheivable like cassie has done. Set realistic goals preferably around strength and PRs.
    5. I don't eliminate any food groups or foods that i enjoy. Even in a deficit. No foods are bad, no foods are scary. This is something we learn in recovery and you don't want to reintroduce that concept.
    6. It's a journey that can not be rushed, don't set time limits or even challenges. Building muscle and recomposition is the opposite journey to restriction and starvation. It's about nourishing and fueling your body to change in a healthy way which takes time it is not a race and it's much more rewarding.
    7. Personally i wouldn't go anywhere near bikini comps, im keeping myself a little less lean then i would like because i feel getting very lean would be to much of a temptation for me.
I think part of building a healthy relationship with your body and food is acknowledging that you have some weaknesses and working around them. Just like a recovered drug addict shouldn't try to casually use drugs because others can, Im not cutting down to 1200 calories or pushing myself to the extreme because others can.
    8. Keep to content creators who keep it real

Cassey got me interested in exercising, but after that blog, I need to take a break from her. I constantly struggle with loving my body and it was hard to read her blog. It makes me so sad because it seems like no one around her is helping her.
I re-read her blogs from the beginning of her 90 journey and she kept saying, "I'm doing this for ME." "It's not about the numbers. Numbers are just data, they don't define you." This last blog is contradicts those statements. She kept saying, "I proved all the naysayers wrong." So she was never doing it for HER, she was doing it to prove her worth to the internet.
She also said, "I didn't want to keep eating how I was because even though I was gaining muscle, I wasn't getting visibly leaner." That statement really triggered me. She knew she was getting stronger, but it didn't matter because she didn't LOOK stronger.

She looked pretty strong, I think the problem she ran into is that getting bigger (even if it's muscle) is a trigger for her. You're right that she says one thing, and everything she says and does contradicts it; I think she knows it's how she SHOULD feel (working out for herself, not letting herself obsess over numbers or body fat percentage) but she's not quite there yet.
I get the feeling that being a fitness influencer at a time where body positivity is gaining ground, she hasn't let herself deal with her body image issues because a)the only way she would know how to do that is publically but b)she expects/would like to already be there, not work her way up. So instead we get empty words that are belied by every decision she makes.
Plus, at the risk of tipping into "armchair therapist" territory, she has mentionned several times (usually before she talks about a product she's launching, like the starting point to her success story), that her parents were very dismissive of dreams and interests (becoming a designer and her interest for pilates). In one of her animated shorts (ua-cam.com/video/QAkftrmFygc/v-deo.html) she mentionned that her dad once told her that she had 3 career options in life: "a doctor, a lawyer or a failure". That's not really the type of environment that helps you deal with criticism in a healthy, nuanced manner.

So I just read her blogpost… first of all, with her workout schedule (running 5x a week I think) and eating only 1800kcals there’s absolutely no way she couldve gained 10lbs in 3 months. As you said, if not even a heavily enhanced bodybuilder can do it, she definitely can’t.
I was sad to read about her goals. She says that she wants to gain muscles but then wanted to cut after just two months because she wanted to be leaner? Unfortunately her body image is so negative and she just cannot live with the thought of being even a little bit heavier for a while, so her brain told her to cut down IMMEDIATELY.
The whole thing was sad to read on one hand, but I am also sure she isn’t just innocent. She knows what she’s doing business wise. It’s a scam.
But she needs therapy. Her blog read like my diary when I was one of my lowest points when it comes to food issues / body image. Its scary.

This was the biggest marketing ploy ever, imo. All of a sudden she’s selling the “special supplements” she’s been taking throughout this journey. The timing leaves very little room for grace. She’s a swindler and she’s good at it too because any time someone calls out her techniques she calls it an “attack”. It’s very icky.

I feel like the fact that she treated this whole journey like she was competing in a competition took away the whole meaning of this journey (which was to build muscle and reclaim her past). The thing i question the most is... did she really get hate, or was ot just constructive criticism and concern? She's not thick skined enough for internet. I think she needs to take a break.
Also all these challenges she does feel like those quick fixes that dont work. Muscle building is a process, that can take years, not 90 days.

She scares me, in terms of her level of influence, given the fact she spreads a certain level of misinformation, whether this is intentionally or not. As you say, I appreciate the fact she seems to appeal to people who are new to exercise and can get them moving. But she does potentially set up unrealistic expectations around what can be achieved at times, like with those slightly odd, basic body weight arm ‘exercises’ she promotes, implying you can somehow spot reduce fat and build muscle by using, well, air for resistance.

Given how on the fence (and leaning towards no when her husband does want them), I firmly believe part of this "journey" and getting to a lower body fat % (which can negatively impact menstruation and fertility) is a method of avoiding having to think about or get pregnant without having to come out and say she doesn't want to. Whether she even acknowledges that to herself. But yes, agreed, so much of her behaviour flashes me back to my own ED, then the whiplash to fitness and obsession with Only Healthy, Only Protein.

Why 90-day when we all know that getting strong, fit and healthy is a personal and "lifelong" journey? What's the end goal here? To sell another journal, cookbook, protein powder, outfit and fitness program? It's not right to "promote" or "market" a fitness journey that is potentially harmful to others. We can all tell that it's unsustainable, unnecessary and misguided, and she knows that too cuz she's experimenting it on herself, and obviously not thrilled by the results. Calling yourself a failure, not being "perfect" or "good enough", all that obsessive behaviours and all or nothing mentality, it's not about rectifying her unhealthy past tbh. It almost sounds like a cry for help. I hope that she can show more kindness to herself, improve her relationship with food and fitness, and be accountable for the kinda content she's selling/endorsing. I think her followers would appreciate and benefit from that way more than reading about her DEXA scan stats and neverending drama with the so-called haters.

I honestly feel bad for Cassey. She clearly has an incredibly low body image and likely personal image despite all her success. Her life revolves around proving people wrong and the numbers. It never comes from her own personal, inner validation. She’s also the person in power in the interactions she has with her “haters,” yet she blames her own mistakes and failures on them. It’s honestly frustrating how she can never take accountability and admit she’s wrong. She can’t take constructive criticism because she takes it so personally. She doesn’t see it as her program being unscientific and ineffective but that there’s a problem with her. Unfortunately, she has influence over so many people and she’s leading many down her same path.

The big one we’ve all been waiting for! I agree that Blogilates and many of your most negative commenters out there dismiss constructive criticism as “hating” to deflect legitimate points.
All good information, genuine concern for her and her audience, and I definitely think you approached this in the most thoughtful way possible! Your tips at the end for helping to optimize her “90 day journey” are much appreciated and way more evidence-based, which I think will be helpful for a lot of people who do choose to do something similar, but actually have a higher likelihood of success by doing things that are actually effective. It’s a shame she didn’t reach out to you for help, as I do consider you one of the smartest people out there when it comes to optimizing hypertrophy. 🙂

Now she's just come out with the protein powder so it makes sense now why she's suddenly pushing that she wanted to gain muscle. Also I saw she has now done a high protein cook book with the food she ate on her 90 day journey 🙄 hence the synical part of me thinks all of the drama and the whole 90 days was to sell protein powder and a cookbook

I found the emphasis on numbers, and specifically the emphasis on the "round" ten, extremely disturbing. Obsessing this much about so called "even", "round", "symmetrical" and "lucky" numbers is a very common occurrence in a lot of different mental illnesses. Unfortunately I went through something very similar when I was struggling with anxiety and depression, so when I saw her using the very same words that I used (along with a tons of other red flags)a, I felt terribly sad. I don't understand how she can be struggling so hard while being seemingly surrounded by many loving people (her parents, her husband...) that apparently don't notice her disordered way of thinking. I really don't understand. I was completely alone when I was ill. I had to take full responsibility for my mental health issues without any kind of support, and that is an insanely difficult thing to do. Not ideal by any means either. I always think that things would have been much smoother if only I had a support system at the time, but every now and then I see people like Cassey, people surrounded by family and friends that are hurting so bad and so clearly, left completely alone like I was. I don't get it, really. I don't get how is that possible. Deep down, I consider those absent friends and family members partially responsible for the terrible long-term consequences of untreated mental illnesses, and I get really angry. Cassey is a functioning adult and thus she is the primary responsible of her health; but the people in her life that are seeing what she's doing to herself and deliberately choosing to look the other way are enablers and overall horrible human beings, because I don't believe for a minute that they don't know what's happening. Here, I said it.
I acknowledge that my words should have been chosen more carefully, but I feel very distressed right now, so I'm truly sorry if I'm (probably) coming off rude and bitter. Let's get to more positive things as quickly as possible! Harry, your channel is a precious jewel and your hat collection is unparalleled! Thank you so much for bringing accessible information and joy (and the latter is even more important, if possible!) to the internet and to the whole industry! I experienced depression and body anxiety during my early teenage years (I'm 17 now), and even though I was surrounded by my family - including my parents, aunties, and a newborn younger brother - I felt isolated, everyone had issues they were dealing with and I felt like I had to deal with my issues on my own. I had no friends to talk to either.
I understand how you're feeling and where you're coming from but it's possible to be in the midst of people and not have them acknowledge or understand what you're going through. I hope that Cassey finds help and healing before she causes harm to herself and her followers.

Tbh, a take away for me is that people should avoid exposing themselves to radiation for unnecessary things. There are times it’s good to get scans done and the data is incredibly valuable, but every time you do it there should be consideration. Like, I hope people don’t start getting DEXA scans because they think they need to. I’m sure not many will be influenced to since it’s expensive anyway, and it’s Cassey’s body, she can do what she wants. I just always think it’s better to be conservative with these things when they aren’t medically necessary. I think the technology has cut down a lot on how much you get exposed to which is good. But food for thought.

Unfortunately, she wasn't willing to listen to experts on how DEXA scans work. A lot of her weighted routines contained moves my gym teachers would class as dangerous (pushups/burpees while braced on round weights, tossing weights from hand to hand, etc). I gain muscle relatively quickly and I can't gain 10lbs of muscle in 2 months. It's just not possible.

no hate at all, but i was shocked by how brazenly childish she was regarding her results. she was so upset, hearing you talk through the logic/reality of her situation was akin to consoling a child. she has been in this industry for so long, she should understand what’s realistic and obtainable. i’m a normal, uneducated person (when it comes to fitness) and even i understood from the start that these results/arbitrary “10 pounds muscle gain” were completely unrealistic.

Theres a weird disconnect when it comes to that stuff, people will gain say 10 plus pounds in a few months and no visible or recorded fat and say its all muscle, not realising your weight can fluctuate a few pounds a day, and the body can easily retain 20+ lbs of water.

I also question her "muscle" gain because she never posts a before and after pic of the 90 day journey. If she did lose that amount of fat and gained that amount of muscle, it will be VERY visually obvious. She only ever showed a comparison during the challenge against a photo that was YEARS old and after she had starved herself for weeks for a cut (800 calories a day or something).... so not even close to what she looked like at the start of the journey. I.e. intentionally misleading to make the challenge results seem significant.

It’s a bit of a bummer to say, because I wish the best for Cassie, but I’m not surprised that she’s disappointed. The standards with her workouts, eating, and everything in between proves unrealistic, so she was already setting herself up for failure. It’s sad to see, and I do hope she grows and learns much from this in a healthier direction.

Sorry, but I cannot accept that she is misinformed. She is in this business many years now and should know better. If she doesn't, it means that she just doesn't care to become educated about the industry that she makes her money off of. It is irresponsible and wrong. Hate is not constructive, but this type of content makes people angry for a reason.

I very much agree with your take on her 90 day journey. I don't think she's very honest with herself which in turn seems to make her content problematic. The last several years just feels like she made a personality out of "proving" others wrong. More importantly though, "I'm a very flaccid traffic cone" is now my new favorite sentence. Many thanks for that.

  • @jabc4748
    @jabc4748 2 роки тому +6

To me, it is clear she still struggles with body imagine, etc. But that's not a critique.. she is human. I struggle with the same. I think what is problematic is that she lies to not only herself, but to her followers. And then she makes money off of it. I personally wasted so much time thinking doing a body-weighted prayer pose for 5 min. would somehow build my arms. I wasted time thinking I could somehow spot reduce. What actually helped me, was tuning out these Pilates-focused instructors (I am NOT hating on Pilates in general!!!) who tell women the WRONG workouts make you 'lean'. Or those who use that type of body-shrinking lingo that is ALWAYS thrown at women. Casey is just like them...and I don't think she's doing anything besides trying to make money... wish she didn't have the chokehold that she does for so many of her followers!

I was worried about that and talked to my nutritionist about it because I find it hard to feed myself sometimes but I can usually have a protein shake and she basically said "if you need to have a protein shake for every meal, that's what you do." I'm sure I'd run into issues if that's ALL I had because of lack of other nutrients but based on what she said I'm comfortable having one after my am workout for breakfast. YMMV

    • @emmairwin581

I don’t believe there are any dangers associated with protein powders. The body doesn’t perceive it as any different from taking in ‘natural’ proteins.

Probably a hopeless question: How to fix a plateau? I'm struggling so much with progression. I'll have a few good weeks, maybe even a couple of months of steady overload etc. And then all of a sudden, I hit a bad week for whatever reason, I drop the weight a bit to even get through my workout and I just get stuck for weeks, like I'm starting all over. And for some of my lifts I've barely been able to up the weight or reps at all for months. (Please tell me the answer is to eat more cake or something).

    • @maryssaann
      @maryssaann 2 роки тому +3

Are you overtraining? Maybe just a good break is needed. I’m currently on one right now because I was seeing signs of overtraining from continuous progressive overload. Just some good old fashioned sleep/rest and a slight calorie surplus to make sure your muscles can repair might help!

I did the 100 ab challenge and it didn't work because my abs didn't get to rest. Anyways is really sad to see, the amount of rest on her training is none and the reps are montrose and not good for you at all.

She starts a 90 day "journey to muscle" and oh what a coincidence also starts selling a protein powder and a cookbook? Nah, I'm out. Both of her "journeys" have been marketing ploys. She claims she's doing it for herself and then she turns around and sells it. I get it, she's running a business, but just be upfront about the real purpose of these journeys. I also don't trust her to provide nutrition advice as far as I could throw her. I like her pilates workouts, I wish that she would have just stuck with what she knew.

I think at the time Cassey became a instructor it was in the early 2000s and this was time of misinformation because a lot of people had a lack of knowledge or some experts did know certain things but did not share everything about overall health. So I think Cassey picked up on the misinformation like a lot of people did and stayed with that belief till know. Not to say that people cannot change and do the research but unfortunately this was not the Case for Cassey, and has now been saying any information regarding the debunking of her old information that is outdated is hate. When some people are just giving her constructive criticism not hate at all. I do love Cassey and I find her a good person but she really needs to take some time away from UA-cam for her well-being.

I actually ended up unsubscribing to her email list after that post. I was not a big fan but I liked to read it sometimes but the last blog post was so triggering. She is old enough to understand these things and how to measure. As everyone said, she never failed. She had a goal that was not realistic and the method was not either and then she had so much negative self talk, it disheartened me especially when the other posts were about loving yourself, eating well, not chasing appearance etc. but she just did the same things, ate less than needed, covered it up and just- I am disappointed :( Not something I want to look upto

Hey Harry! You always tell your audience that the wiser choosing would be to perform the movement in its full range of motion. I was wondering though, do pulses (like squat pulses, bss/rdl pulses) have no place in a workout? Personally, I used to include them in my training, cuz they cause quite a lot of burning. But now that I've learned from your videos, that just bcs it's hurting doesn't necessarily mean it's working, that makes me question whether or not they're worth performing. Anyways, hope you can help me with that.
