High heeled shoes, even though I've been wearing minimal ("barefoot") shoes for the majority of the time, for years. It's even funnier when it's shoes that are marketed as better for you, for your foot health, etc, but they're still too narrow for even my narrow feet, or they're still not shaped like feet. If you wanna wear mainstream shoes, not a problem at all, definitely not my problem, but at least don't sell them under the guise of them being good for foot health!

Is it just me or have all the women and femme folks on UA-cam silently made the decision that TFNL is ours? There are lots of lifting, fitness, and health commentary channels but we've all agreed this one feels the safest. There is no creepy vibe, he's not trying to sell us stuff or make us feel bad about ourselves. The facts are solid and the tone is supportive and kind. Sorry Harry this is probably not what you intended for your channel but welcome to the sleepover bud. We're doing facemasks and telling scary stories.

As a former figure skater/dancer, we used to do those types of arm circle exercises. But it wasn't about lean arms or building muscle or burning calories. It was about endurance, so that when you perform you don't get tired. In conditioning classes, if you dropped your arms, you would have to do arm circles for a minute or two - which covers the length of most skating routines. Since skating/dance is female dominated, I'm not surprised some of those endurance exercises transitioned to other areas of female fitness without that context of what it was actually meant for.

I just wanted to touch on the comment about "what is the purpose of the no weight shoulder workout". I'm a certfied athletic therapist, and I actually use pilates based movements for conditioning purposes during injury or pain rehab. The purpose of pilates based movement is not to create hypertrophy, and typically is not going to be used to burn fat (unless you're pairing it with some kind of cardio exercise), but the focus of these movements is stability, mobility, control and flexibility. When it comes to building power and building strength, we need to have that strong base of control and mobility, or else we won't be able to generate force optimally. So even though it probably doesn't seem like there is a huge benefit to this type of exercise, when used as an adjunct to meeting another goal such as strength and power development it can be really beneficial! There are some MLB players who started to incorporate pilates training into their off season, and they reported fewer injuries as well as greater power output with pitching. There is a purpose for these types of exercises, they just may be a stepping stone to reaching your goals!
Great video btw! Love your stuff! 😊

Madfit was a ballet dancer before she was a fitness instructor. I’m ballet, they actually do such workouts to strengthen a dancer’s ability to keep their arms up while dancing. Ballet dancers don’t build a lot of upper body muscle (the don’t want to grow their arms). She doesn’t mention this but if you watch her UA-cam videos, you’ll see that she has a lot of weighted upper body workouts then other videos where she titles them ‘dancer arms’ and things like that.

With workouts like MadFits workout though (million reps with no/little weights), one thing I don't understand: Every expert says these kind of workouts are useless. But considering they can keep going and going while I'm hurting and have to stop several times, doesn't it mean it's something I could and should work towards to? It may not lead to bigger muscles, but fitness is not just bigger muscles? I don't mean this particular 4 minutes workout, but these kind of workouts in general.

I feel you hard on the split squats. Why must they hurt so much? Also totally agree about the “activation” issue; I find the concept so silly. Like if you don’t “activate” your glutes they won’t grow or work during the movement. I think people get too caught up in mind-muscle connection and think if they don’t feel their glutes burning during the movement that means their glutes aren’t working. I can’t tell you the last time I bothered with “activating” my glutes (instead I focus on dynamic stretching and mobility) and the booty gains have been real simply because of progressive overload.

I am with you bro! It is really sad to see that most Fitness influencers promote their business by showing off their bodies as a selling point. It is showing, to me at least of how "insecure" they are. It seems that body image and security are based on how they look. Why can't an influencer also shows body imperfections and still feel secure? To me, It may give a more positive and healthy influence, mentally and physically. The reality is we all have flaws in our body and we are not made of plastic mould shape! So to feel secure out of doing our best for our body and health shouldnt be based on how we look (or our abs looks like).

I think you're going to say there is no way to progressivly overload the arm workout.
The purpose for an exercise like this could be for a warm up or it could be a ballet style "endurance workout". I know girls who did stuff like this to get ready for arm heavy performances like Swan Lake where muscle strength won't help you as much as adapting to the inevitable burn and just learning how to basically embrace it and keep good form. I don't think MadFit is making that for those people either though because it's just too short. One girl I knew went through the two hour swan lake performance (arms only) while walking on a treadmill. It burns some calories but the goal would be surviving the performance more than anything and not looking like a limp armed zombie 15 minutes in.

    • @emilyesnyman
      @emilyesnyman 2 роки тому +9

As a ballet dancer I totally appreciate this comment! I used to do these "pointless" workouts for my ballet arms, because it made them hold shape better for longer, without it burning like hell. I since stopped and I'm not focusing on resitance training and making my arms stronger. But back then it really helped me! It's just unfortunate that it's marketed so wrongly.

When I first got into the gym I didn't do any cardio, and my stamina was a limiting factor in compound movements. When I started doing some cardio and became more fit my output in the weight room increased a lot as well. It's just my personal experience.

When i was 7 i was visiting my family in Australia (my parents, sister and i where visiting) and because i wore a dress/short shorts my inner thighs rubbed against each other and i got a bleeding rash. Even though i wasn't overweight i figured that i must be fat because the legs of my mum and sister didn't rub against each other. This experience with a couple of other things built the foundation of my struggle with eating disorders during my whole teenage years up until my mid twenties. I'm 27 now and still struggle with my body image but everything has gotten a lot better i must say. I think around the 25years mark it started to get better.
But i am glad i wasn't a child in this time because the "social" media is capable to really fuck up ones head...

Thanks for the tip about the dumbell press at 9.30. Tried it this week and feel it in my pecs so much more. Keep up the great work!
Comment question of the week: I really struggle with my balance in the dreaded Bulgarian Split Squat (even with 2 dumbells). Any tips or should I just persist and hope that my balance improves with time?
Oh, and the ads I get swamped with are for Project Management software, Pizza ovens and bullshit stuff about something you breathe into to supposedly tell you what your metabolism is doing.

I have no idea where this hip dip thing came again. It's the same as thigh gap or whatever is in to diss now. Usually it's something that is genetic & there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.
Regarding the glute "activation" thing. I'm guilty of it though I don't call it glute activation. Personally I'm very quad dominant when I'm doing squats, especially in narrower stances. I find that it's easier for me to focus more on glutes rather than my quads if I have done hip abductors, glute bridges etc. smaller very glute focused exercise before those bigger compound movements.
Also thanks for mentioning that your anatomy affects your squat form. Not that I'm going to do anything with weights for some time. Just had my disc surgery so full on recovery here. Super exited to get back to running in a few months.

For comment question of the week:
I've been training at home for years but I'm interested in going to the gym and lifting heavier weights. However, I only have 12kg and 8kg kettlebells at home so that's what I've been working with. I'm not sure about my technique so I'm afraid to use bigger weights or barbell. How can I safely increase the weight I'm lifting?

Something I haven’t seen about hip dips that I learned is that it maybe due to atrophied glute meds - I have a hip condition where mine are atrophied and my PT work has lessened the severity of their appearance. I didn’t mean to “fix” them but I guess I did

I'll take a Split Squat over BB Alternating Reverse Lunges. The fact that I have not fallen down in a way that I seriously injured myself yet or actually started crying in the midst of my sets is a miracle lol Interestingly enough, I do love a Bench Press though. When I started to workout, I expected to be really bad at them because of my limb length and bad shoulder, but they are surprisingly my best lift and I love to see them in other womens workouts (for some reason it feels like such a 'male dominated' lift)

    Fun fact of dubious accuracy:
If you're of English descent, your ratio of thigh to shin is supposed to indicate whether you have more Saxon or Norman genes.
    Physics fact of dubious necessity:
Squat form does depend on biomechanics. But full biomechanical calculation can get complicated, so it may be useful to think of this in terms of simple physics - where is your centre of gravity?
Think of two cues that are commonly given without much thought: knees stay behind toes, and body should be upright. Now apply both those in their extreme case i.e. shins vertical, back vertical. You have the geometry of someone sitting in a chair. And when you take that chair away, it doesn't matter how strong you are, you're going to go splat on your tailbone. So every individual needs to shift parts of themselves far enough forward to put their C of G over their feet, in order to stay in balance. For some, that will mean more shin angle; for others, more body lean, or both. This is also why front, low bar back and high bar back squats all require slightly different form.
Form tip that may or may not be worth anything:
As for the lady in the clip, I think it might be useful to keep an eye on her timing. It looked to me like she reached maximum depth a little before maximum lean. Thus on the way up, it looks like she's *almost* starting to move her hips up before her shoulders, which could leave her back sonewhat vulnerable. We can't tell how it feels to her - she may be completely comfortable - but it could be worth bearing in mind.
Hope some of that makes sense to someone!

I'm not a professional but from what I know doing compound lifts first makes more sense. However, I'm currently following MegSquats stronger by the day program and that's one of the things that I find so weird about it. The compound lifts are often not first and also there's so many supersets/circuits. I usually can't really do them though because my gym is tiny as heck and crowded.

Hi, I have been watching your videos for a while now and I was wondering if you could make a video with some tips for someone who is just starting to go to the gym. I have been using home workout videos for a while and not seeing much progress, which I now understand due to your videos is because of how a lot of the movements incorporated in those videos are just hurting my muscles instead of helping them to grow. Therefore, could you explain what you should aim to do to ensure your muscles are being properly worked and give examples of some exercises I could try?

So the arm circles MadFit does are a basic training exercise for boxing, it helps condition the shoulders. You’ll generally do a few rounds with and without weights to prep your body to holding up your arms when you get tired during a fight.

leaving a comment for question of the week: would you recommend doing powerlifting movements before or after general resistance training in a session? i've properly gotten into powerlifting not long ago and there's still only so much weight i can lift, thus not a big range for me to work with, so i usually do my general workouts (let's say today is a leg day) and practice my squats/deadlifts in the same session. what's the best way to structure it?

I liked the chat on body shape and image. You know, I was born and raised in a country that valued “meaty” women and I was always skinny. Now I live in a country that values skinny over curvier body. So we cant really stress about these things. Also, years ago it was considered awesome to have thy gaps. Now we see all about building glutes and legs to get them stockier. Love yourself and if you do want to achieve some body changes, go for it safely! But dont follow the trends. Follow your hapiness

I just want to say that the weightless "arm" moves really do work your shoulders. I know this because I did a lot of blogilates and my shoulder muscles grew a lot. I didn't do any other training before, so it must have been from these weightless arm moves. However, my biceps were sooo weak in comparison, everything was just really uneven. So even if they do work your shoulders, the result is not what you want it to be. Just wanted to throw that in there. 🙂

When I was younger I broke my (right) hip. Then screws were put in and after a while in a wheelchair I had physiotherapy to be able to walk, run etc. Actually I don't suffer from it anymore, except in the gym. When I do squats I notice that I come up "skewed" (left hip first and more forward), while this is not because my muscles are tired. (it also happens without weight). Is there a way to practice/improve this. "Just focussing" on it doesn't help. I do mobility exercises and am quite flexible. So I don't think I'm limited in this. I love your video's and learned so much! You are part of the reason I started to enjoy going to the gym and I am always excited when there is a new video up.

I have hip issues also - Look into videos about “shifting” during the squat - they suggest a resistance band pulling the weak side out slightly but I also just realized they were never not going to be uncomfortable and I don’t miss it and I’m just as strong. I’m trying very hard to avoid a hip replacement so it’s worth it to me. Just my two cents

CQOTW: do you consider pulsing exercises to be completely useless or just inefficient? I know that the best exercise is the one you enjoy, but as someone trying to slowly build strength in very weak joints and muscles, do you think they're worth doing? Obviously they're not as efficient as full range of motion but do they do anything at all?

Hi Harry, I have a question (I'm new here so you may have addressed it already). What about Les Mills body pump? I feel like it's so many reps for such a sustained amount of time that I can't go heavy. Is that beneficial in any way, even if not for building muscle?

    • @loriferguson4228
      @loriferguson4228 2 роки тому

Absolutely you'll build muscle with body pump and you'll get lean doing it! I use to do it three to four times a week untill my gym quit offering the class. Now this is granted your diet is higher protein low carb. If you're trying to win the next olympia maybe not so much..lol depends on your personal goal.
