  • Linda Sun is a content creator and Gymshark athlete that has been questioned many times regarding her message and her relationship with food. A few people sent me her video questioning whether I thought discussions of transformations to any degree can be problematic, which presented me with a great opportunity to expand on this topic and express that one should be careful when comparing their journey with the journey of influencers online...

Helps a bit when you ( or at least me) need motivation, or even info on some stuff if you don't have access to a personal trainer & things like that. But it's necessary to be aware that everyone's body works differently, and that there is the possibility of cosmetic procedures, enhancers, photoshop...
And yet sometimes I feel bad seeing them because I have depression & other health issues that leave me incapacitated somewhat often, so I am going through things slowly. Since I'm 25, I feel like I should hurry. And I have made plenty of progress (lost 5~7kg I gained on the pandemic), but haven't met some goals I've made for myself.
That's my view on the topic.

I personally do not mind them IF it seems to me that the individual has made improvement over a reasonable time period and isn't trying to suggest that everything they've done will work for others. I'm generally pretty good about not comparing the progress and aesthetics of my body to others, because I realize my body, goals, and methodology are different from theirs. HOWEVER, it's taken me a long time to get a to a place where I don't compare, and I have definitely given into "transformation" programs in the past that I never ended up sticking with. The only instances when I have reached substantial improvement in my body goals are when I was part of athletic teams and actively playing sports OR when I decided for my OWN enjoyment what I was doing to exercise and improve my physicality. I always look my best and stay most consistent when I'm doing something that brings me joy and let's me have fun.

I think they are a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, seeing positive results for someone else can motivate one and instill belief that transformation is possible for oneself to improve their health. As you point out, comparisons to others may set unrealistic individual expectations and may affect one's core values creating greater issues on overall health balance.
I think this is where channels like yours, and a support system of friends, family, community is beneficial to help maintain perspective in one's journey to a healthier place.

It seems like social media is obsessed with transformations (mental or physical - becoming stronger, thinner, fatter, more eco, more minimal, more thoughtful... it's all about being better, better better). I'm sure it could be inspiring for some. I think the problem comes with it sets up this paradigm about a successful/happy life is achieved through constant measurable improvements (measurable being something you can show in a story online etc etc). In truth I think life is more complicated than that. First of all, we can't always be improving in the ways deemed socially acceptable or trendy. Second, we shouldn't be. Sometimes it is helpful to revisit the past and relearn from it. Regression shouldn't be considered failure. So I generally prefer content that is about establishing a "process" over a "product". So no "what I eat in a day"+ thumbnail abs/bikini shots. Lifestyle and transformation videos are only helpful in my opinion if they convey a sustainable/realistic message that admits to its limitations--not a highlight reel, or victory lap, or informercial.

I don’t have any issue with Linda’s transformation. What irritated me about her video is that it seemed to me to highlight some deception in her videos. She mentioned in this video that her eating/drinking/sleep/fitness/and emotion regulation has been out of balance for some time and it’s made her progressively unhappy with how she feels and looks. Yet, her previous videos seem to be glorifying that lifestyle.

Yes she seems to be putting out contradictory messages and it seems to go round in circles, it seems like it's essentially always the same.. it always seems to be something along the lines of "i gained weight, i'm struggling a bit with the fact that I put on weight but accept it and try to love myself as I am don't need to change because all bodies are worthy and our bodies do not determine our worth", but then it's like "oh, wait, no actually I wasn't fine with the weight gain even though I pretended to be and I feel so frustrated about the weight gain etc. and here is how I am dealing with it".
To me it seems like she still is struggling with eating and she seems to be sooo hyperfocused on food and everything to do with it like food is the most important thing in her life.
I really enjoyed her videos at first back in 2020 but had to unsubscribe because
      1) she seems to be churning out contradictory content and it's always the same..

I think it's really important to talk about socioeconomic status/class in discussions of some of these influencers, and the impact they have on their audience. I was immediately alienated from Linda Sun bc it's clear she is a young student living at home and being supported by an obviously wealthy family. That goes leaps and bounds to enabling you to work out multiple times a day; being able to work out comfortably with space and adequate equipment (I saw they have a whole room covered in fitness mats?); and being able to afford ample groceries (healthy AND indulgent) and takeout.
When I was an eating disordered 20 year old I was a student living in a flatshare, working part time to afford groceries, utilities and fuel. There was never one moment where I could live in any way like she does in her videos, even her early ones before she was making as much money from sponsors.
In my opinion, that's a huge factor in how her message and brand is perceived by her audience (primarily young people, often with EDs). Her inspirational messages about honouring your body and hunger is part of a toxic cycle fuelled by social media - but even then, even if you take her message of positivity at face value, when it's coupled with videos of a life that is inaccessible for so much of her audience, what effect does that have? You can say it's not meant to be for everyone, but the disordered young people being shown this image of Linda's life can be inspired to emulate her - and when *they* eat cake every night to honour their hunger, and *they* don't have a spare 2-3 hours in their day to work out twice, and they don't see weight loss or a stronger feeling body themselves... that's promoting another cycle right there for potentially vulnerable people.

      THIS!
The socioeconomic topic us hardly being talked about when it comes to fitness/healthy living. And it should be talked about often.
As someone who lives in a developing country, access to certain health food is limited as well as housing. I live with two relatives because it's cheaper, but the bedrooms in the house have limited space so I end up working out in my bedroom all the time, but the space isn't that enough to put a workout mat. Not to mention my relatives chide me for eating healthy, saying if I'm trying to starve myself. So many factors at play.

I feel like the fact that she's made a video that says she was miserable, binge eating for emotional comfort, hated her body and was over exercising just throws all of her other videos in a bad light. If you look at the titles of her videos it's like "I gained weight and I love it!" "Eating everything I want" "birthday cheat meals" "why I gained weight and I love it" and in these videos she'll talk about how she's honouring her hunger and living her best life and loving her body. And it's so obviously a lie, and her latest videos are about how her relationship with food is terrible, she's binge eating, she's binge drinking, she hates her body.

Transformations can be toxic in that it's a "problem solved" instead of "ongoing progress" because keeping weight off/on or staying fit is an ongoing thing that ebbs and flows. Also social media is so highly manipulated that it's hard to trust what you see and read. I will definitely be a fan of sleep - if I am short on sleep I crave empty carbs in a serious way. The only transformation posts I appreciate honestly are the ones where there are YEARS between the before and after. I dislike short term transformation posts because what took six months to achieve can be undone in one month, not to mention all the tricks people use to make the pictures look different. Show me the years of hard work you put into getting your body to where it is now and the years of successfully keeping it there because you changed your lifestyle, not just your diet or exercise regime for a few months. If someone wants to post their 90 day transformation or whatever, that's fine. You're proud of yourself, that's great. But what inspires me is people who have put in the years of work and consistency, because that's the part that's so freaking hard.

I used to think that way but there's always progress to be made. And most importantly I'm happy and proud of myself, I didn't approach it with a quick fix or anything like that, I was consistent, but also reasonable.

I have a lot of weight to lose and 4 kids to take care of now so the process is very slow but I've seen things here and there that show me I'm making progress. But it's really hard when you've been at it for years and are only just beginning to see differences while people do drastic things to get big changes in a short amount of time and post all about it online. I constantly have to remind myself that small, consistent daily changes add up to big differences over time and I just need to be patient and keep moving forward. She was talking about having a difficult time lately in her transformation video, how she was waking up hungover and feeling terrible...but in videos from the time period she's referencing, she was gushing about how great she felt and how far she's come etc. The problem is her lack of honesty. She's so busy curating a certain image and to make ad money online that she just says whatever she thinks her fans want to hear. Sucks because I really used to like her videos.

When I say that it took me more than 30 years to learn not to compare my journey, my body, my transformation to others’, I am not exaggerating. I’m severely grateful to all the influences (not influencers, to be clear) in my life that allowed me to reach that point - and this channel is one of those.

She’s in a toxic cycle. What she promotes is not what fitness is about .I’m glad people are starting to see that ! She’s very contradicting and makes no sense. No hate on her if that’s how she wants to live but it’s not okay to be influencing people to think this is normal or okay. Or to think this is what being fit and healthy should look like.

Linda Sun has the most unformed and inconsistent positions about nutrition and exercise I've ever seen on UA-cam. I had to unfollow when it was clear that she's a simply a clever, yet confused young girl with an overwhelming need for approval.
In my opinion she's just an overeater who cloaks her eating habits with a bunch of profound sounding (albeit actually shallow) commentary which is more or less the same talking points from video to video, while constantly over-exercising to compensate for her overeating. After a couple of views, I started watching her videos with sound off just for the recipes, but then I decided to unfollow altogether when I realized I was getting virtually no added value from time spent viewing.
Nice girl, I am sure, but she needs a ton of mental development and time to form proper opinions before actually "influencing".

I appreciate Linda as a content creator for her storytelling capability and her meal inspiration but that’s pretty much it. I watched an interview with her where she commented at length about her issues with an eating/exercise disorder. Linda is still very young and I really worry that she’s just sort of oblivious to how much documenting her eating and lifestyle habits is feeding into her disorder and skewing her messages which often flip flop back and forth between wholistic and totally unnatural/curated eating and exercise to suit whatever phase of the disorder she’s experiencing at that moment. She’s got quite a lot of reach as a content creator so this kind of narrative can be quite harmful and clearly isn’t helping her develop a truly better relationship with her body.

All of her videos are literally the same thing. Like her eating peanut butter and oats pancakes, oatmeals, lunch, dinner, ice-cream, donuts and partying, drinking and working out way too hard and ranting about life🙃 all of her videos have almost the same thumbnails with different titles that make no sense. I get why she does that bcz I've been a subscriber when she only had 2 or 3 videos like those and she had some other videos on her channel which had way too less views. Those videos were about fashion and clothes but her food vidoes used to get more views. So she started posting about what she ate and how she worked out. All of her videos are basically "WHAT I EAT IN A WEEK" videos but with slightly different titles🙂 I never got benefited by them tbh. Her video titles are pretty annoying too. Like in one title she writes how she loves eating & working out and in another she writes how she's not enjoying food and working out. But all of those videos contain the same things. What she eats & how she works out nothing else🙃 her videos her basically "A week in her life" but heavily edited🤧 I just wanted to write how I felt about her vidoes no hate to her at all. I'm still subscribed to her channel but don't watch the videos bcz they are not useful at all rather it will make you feel poor and weird in different ways🤧

“It will make you feel poor and weird in different ways.” This sums it up exactly. The videos are constantly swinging from one pole to another (happy, sad, loving yourself, hating yourself) and I’m not criticizing that as content alone…if Linda *really* experiences those emotions and is not just hamming it up for the camera, it sounds like literal symptoms of bipolar disorder, which is a serious mental health condition that needs treatment. Being moody in your teens and twenties is normal but having those SUPER high highs and low lows like she is portraying in her videos are often a sign that something is up.

To me it seems like Linda has a very unhealthy relationship with food even when she’s not restricting herself. It’s making me insanely uncomfortable to see and hear her getting overly excited because of food. The whole “ooooh, soooo good! Yummy!!” I mean I also enjoy eating a good meal (like probably most of us do) but with Linda it almost seems like she gets an extreme dopamine rush when eating. It could be just an act, I’m aware of that, but still. It’s definitely the reason why I stopped watching her videos.

So I just allowed myself to relax. I watched Hulu. I made popcorn. I had chocolate and some *naughty* processed foods. I still planned to get a workout in and when I ran out of time to do so, I felt guilty for all of the food I consumed. But then I went to bed. I slept well. The soreness in my muscles from the previous workout was gone. I felt lighter and more prepared for today than I believe I would have been if I hadn't taken that day. I can still see my abs. I can still do pull ups. And I'm actually excited to do my workout today. I'm not going to "make up" for the workout I missed. I'm just going to accept that I needed this. Balance is hard and I'm still working on it, but it is vital to make any kind of progress.

Hi HARRY!!! Good to “see you”! And CONGRATULATIONS ON 50K!!
I’m so happy that you did a video on Linda’s video. I refuse to watch her videos anymore, I had to unsubscribe BUT for some reason YT recommended a few of her videos… you can see snippets of the videos with subtitles and I had I saw more than enough. Linda’s journey is exhausting, dizzying, and absolutely triggering. She’s a yo yoing mess and it’s a horrible reminder of my own ED days. I’m 25 weeks pregnant and still active but my eating is hit and miss. I’m watching my body change and can do absolutely nothing about it 😪😪😪. It’s discouraging.
I don’t see Linda stopping this vicious cycle that she is on. I don’t see how what she is doing is “inspirational”… there’s a lot of toxicity on the hamster wheel she’s on. Reminds me of Cassie from Blogilates. Trying to figure out what the take away is from her “journey” when she will do the same again…

Before then, she was at first inspiring for feeling good about eating food you love and moving your body, but I started feeling a weird triggering with how hard she worked out and made me remember my times of food reward. Once she was doing an experiment with calorie restriction, I was off of that train so fast!! I'm not into that and was really disappointed.

    Long comment:
Harry you made some really good points so I gotta talk about them. I’ve had an ED and truly for me to start loosing weight I had to try and mend my relationship w food. And tho I’m still working on it it’s SO much better than before. Transformations can be negative or positive, so I think intent matters. It’s so easy to compare your progress w others, I’m better at it but every now and then I still catch myself doing that. “Comparison is the thief joy” everyone’s journey is different so of course they look different. And to add what Harry said about it not being a linear journey and it being a long one is true. I started loosing weight in 2019, it’s 2022 now and I’ve been able to loose 64lbs, it’s slow, I took my time, I educated myself, I was consistent, and I was constantly growing and you know that? I take this over all the other times I tried. Some days are still hard but I love moving my body, I love cooking my food, and I’ve been amazed by what my body has achieved. I’ve hit a new low weight and I can run a mile in 9:45! It’s slow but I honestly believed I wouldn’t ever been able to do that! At one point in time, that seemed impossible.
Don’t give up, be patient w yourself, and you got this friend :)

It's also important to remember that the video will be there when you are in a better place. As hard as it can be to imagine being in a better state mentally at your lowest, you really will get better. And when you are the video will be there waiting for you. As someone who has dealt with ED-related issues, it's pretty obvious that she replaced her previous forms of restriction with binging + purging via over-exercise. This is a very common problem to have for those who have struggled with disordered eating, and I've dealt with it myself. However, the way she seems to be struggling with these issues in the background while speaking in cliches and romanticizing her life to an audience of young women struggling with disordered eating... makes her content off-putting at best and triggering at worst.

This topic has been touched upon in prior videos, but to summarize quickly, if you are looking to optimize hypertrophy (the building of muscle), it is ideal to take your working sets to if not close to failure, and this could be anywhere from the 5-30 rep range based on the research out there, and focus on progressively overloading these movements each week (whether that be extra reps of the same weight, increasing the weight, etc). Look for a Hypertrophy Guide from TFNL coming up in the future! 🙂

i think a lot of people go through something like that especially if they struggle with mental health. i know that some months i will think i feel good about myself and think i'm happy but in hindsight, i was lying to myself and didn't actually feel good about myself and was not in a good place. i think it's just part of growth to acknowledge "oh i wasn't actually happy with my lifestyle at that time because it only made me happy in the moment/impulse not in the long term" i don't think that's the worst thing about her content but i do still watch her (i have other criticisms of her content like her thumbnails and ill placed sponsorships/ads that ruin a lot of generally decent messages)

    Video Notes:
Always very happy to see getting the support you deserve from the audience, and the happiness it brings to you! If you find a good chair eventually, let me know, since I’m in the same boat!
Wholesome message about food and thanks once again for always looking out for your audience! Your own honesty about how you don’t always apply what you preach to yourself and “turning speed bumps into a mountain” definitely applies to me as well, which I know I need to improve on.
“Baby steps are still steps” is on the card, can confirm.
Broken record like always, but more wholesomeness and truth from you about transformations, and I’m sure a lot of your audience loves to hear “I’m proud of you”, since oftentimes people struggle feeling proud of themselves. Great video again, always love your content and being somebody whom I know is genuine when they talk about mental health, it's appreciated by your audience more than you know I think!

I have a question: I quite often see the plank included in workouts, but it has no range of movement, and nothing is being stretched. So if it's not for building muscle and it's not for stretching/mobility, what is it for?

    • @Milo915
      @Milo915 2 роки тому

A plank is a muscular stabilizing exercise that targets your core muscles well. It’s hard to keep a good plank for a minute +

    • @LabradorsAreGoodDogs
      @LabradorsAreGoodDogs 2 роки тому

@@Milo915 thanks for answering. I agree a plank is really difficult and impressive to do. The internet generally says that the plank is for building strength in your core or working on your abs, but Harry always says that you have to move a muscle through a range of motion to grow it, and it's possible to make a muscle hurt without "working" it. So I'm wondering if a plank gets too much credit and is actually a bit of a waste of time - even though I agree it is really difficult!

I think no one has a perfect relationships with food. I totally resonate with what you said and i too, don't think have eating disorder but sometimes may have eaten diss-orderly from various reasons and circumstances. Sometimes i feel bad, afraid that i may have eating disorder from "feeling bad" that i have just eaten certain foods 😂. Really confusing. Just move on with the day and focus on bigger things maybe? Being conscious of what we are eating not a bad thing i believe. When is it becomes a problem? I think when we overly conscious and replaced many other important things in life in general. That is called unhealthy obsession.

I’m not an expert by any means, but my experience with overcoming over restriction and calorie obsession while trying to build muscle has been to eat to satiety. Any time I feel hunger, I eat something until I’m not hungry anymore. Honoring my hunger cues has been difficult at times because my anxiety tells me I shouldn’t feel hungry or I’ve had enough, but I talk myself through it and eat anyway. No idea if I’ve gained or lost weight eating this way the past two years, as I’ve not weighed myself, but I know my clothes still fit and I can consistently lift heavier/perform more reps.

    • @johannarohe1401
      @johannarohe1401 2 роки тому +4

Also no expert but I'd consider tracking your progress in the gym, are you lifting heavier etc. and if you notice you're lacking energy in workouts or sth similar, you'll probably need to add in a snack... Otherwise I would say as long as you're getting stronger and noticing that a muscle you've been working on is growing just a little it's all good... For now just focusing on how you're feeling is probably the best, trying to monitor your eating for building muscle can also result in orthorexia and if you're prone to that it's best to avoid any of those behaviours. Maybe someday you will feel comfortable with tracking macros but focusing on getting in high quality protein, carbs for energy and fat for hormone health etc. is probably a good gentle approach

Also I pay attention to what I eat in a day - am I happy with anything, or am I craving specific foods. Just like when you're thirsty and cold watermelon sounds amazing, if you're always reaching for the peanut butter you're looking for nutritionally dense, protein and fats. If you are always ready to smash a chocolate biscuit your blood sugar is probably low and you should eat more to fuel yourself for longer between meals and snacks (and then eat the biscuit 🍪)

I find her view toward food concerning because as a fitness youtuber people do look to her for direction. When you say I love food and it makes me happy so I'm going to eat whatever I want, as much as I want, and not limit myself in anyway its problematic for two reasons. Looking toward an external factor to provide happiness and possibly bandaid deeper issues is a problem. A two just because it makes you happy doesn't mean having unlimited amounts of it is good for you. I.e. treating myself to nice things makes me happy but if I racked up $30,000 in credit card debt would it be responsible to keep encouraging the behavior under the guise of well it makes me happy so it must be okay. On a sidenote- too often people mistake pleasure for happiness. Good food gives you pleasure, spending money gives you pleasure, finding the perfect shade of lipstick gives you pleasure. All of which are temporary and can be used as a band aid to avoid dealing with deeper issues. Happiness is more lasting and less transient. Having a supportive family, good friends/support system, growing as a person those are examples of things that can bring happiness vs pleasure.

The comment about body fat percentage being 40% at 5’6 and 130lbs could be possible. I ran into a similar problem when I did a DEXA scan because essentially I had very little lean body mass. I have started incorporating more protein into my diet and introduced resistance training to help build up my lean muscle mass so I’m not “skinny fat”. The medical term for it is Metabolically Obese Normal Weight. I have my next Dexa scan in a couple of months to see if the percentages have shifted with the changes I’m currently implementing

I have a question and I wondered if you could help me with it
I started taking my mother in law to the gym (she is 67) since she has not worked out in forever and her age is catching up with her due to that.
The problem: she really struggles with lunges. She is not able to do a single one. All other exercises are fine.

Heya, fellow diabetic here. No solutions, but I feel you. Definitely had days I put off eating because my sugars were behaving and I didn't want to ruin it. I spent a lot of time unpacking it in therapy, coupled with some family history of diet culture. A lot of it was feeling like I was being graded by the numbers, and changing that mindset to it being a number to respond to, plus focussing on how it felt rather than fixed metrics. If your mood is being affected by thoughts of diet or your numbers, I'd say go see a counsellor (imo, not a professional)
