He doesn't yell, it's part of his style! Some people just don't know talent if it hit them in their face!! This guy is the best male vocalist I've ever heard!!!
Yes David is classically trained. His father and his grandfather were Jewish cantors. David trained to carry on the tradition. Started training at age 12 and still works with a voice coach that travels with the band. I was fortunate to see them in concert last month!! My all time fave band!!
I'm quite certain a lot of people weren't aware he was capable of singing like this before Disturbed dropped this cover, but their songs "Remember" & "Darkness" from their Believe album show how he can flex his vocals.
A saw a interview with David about the recording of S.O.S, it took him a shitload of tries to figure it out, but when he got it the band was completely stunned and almost crying. 🙂
I remember hearing this on the radio for the first time coming home from work. I was super impressed by it. I was stunned to find out it was Disturbed that recorded it, being familiar with them already and knowing their hard-rocking style and grungy vocals. David is the man!
Yeah you’re probably right. I saw Disturbed live back when I was in high school in like 2007 and I remember he definitely sounded amazing live, basically studio quality. But it was all very aggressive singing, not like this.
Actually not even him knew could sing like that, when they decided to make this cover, and to get it done the way they wanted it to sound, he had to learn, practice and apply new ways of singing and techniques he didn’t knew, and obviously wouldn’t use before; he actually became a way better singer because of doing this cover and amplifying his knowledge and thechnics for singing.
This is my favorite "version" of "Sound of Silence" mainly because David's voice follows the message and "mood" of each song line perfectly. As a result, the lyrics "move" me more powerfully and emotionally. Also, Anastasia, I loved your analysis, great details and the way you freely expressed yourself!!
In an interview, David said he usually gets a song in 1 or 2 takes in the studio - but he said this one took around *40 takes*! He and his recording crew listened to each take and made suggestions on how to make it better, until it became the genius that we got. So I guess you could say that he did get instruction on how to sing it, but it was a group effort that brainstormed this masterpiece.
He is classically trained Jewish Cantor. Hè was also very sick with the flu during this performance. His brother, Benjamin lives in Israel & is a ambient musician.
David was extremely sick (notice he is sitting/leaning on the stool the whole time). The producers added a small amount of autotune and David was pissed. Amazing performance, especially when you know more of the story. PS he was trained as a cantor I believe. I also heard that David did this so his family that wasn't really into the harsher songs, had something to listen to.
Could you point me towards any video or article where this comes from. I keep hearing these fact repeated on these UA-cam comments but I am trying to read or listen to where they come from. Thank you in advance!
David Draiman was trained as a Cantor. Paul Simon loved this performance so much he not only wrote to Disturbed, but also promoted it on his social media. Something he has never done for a cover of one of his songs.
@@Prozak63 His grandfather had trained him to replace him as Temple Cantor and when David went his own way there was a rift between them for many years due to his grandfathers disappointment. @@adwood201 I agree with everything you said. My point was that many think he attended a formal school for training. That's why I pointed out his family history. Not much different than my father getting his degree in mechanical engineering at Princeton. I've never been to a trade school and don't have an ASE certification but I've also been well trained in mechanics...
One of the best voice reactions I've seen. You go into so much detail about what he's doing, it's great! He tells the story that Simon and Garfunkel wrote so amazingly.
This song was originally written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkel many, many years ago. It was a huge hit. The way that David and Disturbed have performed this song, gives it new meaning and makes it more sensitive. Even Paul Simon has commended him on how he adapted the song and brought out it's meaning. Love both versions.....but this is more powerful. As mentioned, he was very sick when he was on this show. You need to watch the video that was released for this song.
Fun Fact: David has admitted to being "a bit resentful" about his time at Jewish day schools, but nevertheless became trained as a hazzan and encouraged his family to observe Shabbat. A hazzan is a Jewish musician or precentor trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the congregation in songful prayer. In English, this prayer leader is often referred to as a cantor, a term also used in Christianity.
Hi! Just wanted to let you know that that was not falsetto. David does not need to use falsetto... His range is amazing. :) And I'm glad you enjoyed this so much. I listen to this many many times a week!
As an FYI, the lead singer, David Draiman had extensive training as a Jewish Cantor. You might also check out "Reason to Fight" as another example the bands and Dramin's versatility.
@@davidkrutsinger5414 (This is all straight from David's mouth.) His great-grandfather was cantor of the largest synagogue in Jerusalem. David's father was a businessman that went to prison for his dirty dealings. As a freshman David was kicked out of his high school (The Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study) because in an act of revenge he pushed an older boy out a second story window. At 16 David was a heroin addict, and at 18 was found unconscious under a parked car on the streets of Chicago in the dead of winter, wearing only his pants.
Most people never realized what amazing vocals David has....UNTIL they hear this song! He can sing anything, and with stunning control ! David Draiman..... a powerful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which goes straight through you to your very soul! Draiman's voice and emotion brings so much more to the lyrics. Astounding performance. He was indeed classically trained. A joy! Disturbed does a great cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion"! (check out some early Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Prog at its best)
Firstly, it's always nice to see David get the credit he deserves for being a hell of a vocalist. Secondly, there's no need to apologize for getting technical. I can't speak for other people, but I know that I look for reactors who can break down music/vocals on a technical level so that I can learn more about music. Also, if you want to see another performance on a talk show from a band that I would never have expected to be on a talk show, check out "Familiar Taste of Poison" by Halestorm on the Jimmy Fallon show. The thing which impresses me the most, is how anyone could listen to Simon & Garfunkel's amazing folksie original from back in the '60's and believe they could make something equally amazing (such as we've just listened to) out of it. Apparently, the first time Paul Simon heard Disturbed's version of his iconic song, he was absolutely blown away by it, and you can find no stronger validation from anyone, anywhere than that. Lovely reaction, thanks.
David comes from a multi generational line of Cantors and was trained traditionally in his youth. When he started metal he trained with Melissa Cross to do his growl and not hurt his voice.
Great cover reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎
Loved the reaction and especially the technical analysis. As a musician and rock vocalist myself, I always appreciate hearing the breakdown of the technical aspects. I learn from these videos and it reminds me to watch for and correct my bad habits I may have picked up along the way. 😆 As for David's voice and this cover - I have watched the music video and live cover probably 100s of times and I get chills and often tears every time. This is simply perfection. On the music video, love the visuals and message - put a whole new appreciation for the lyrics for me. New subscriber here, I look forward to more of your content.

It is so awesome to watch people who are vocally trained experience this absolutely incredible performance. Just watching your face react to each vocal gift that is hidden throughout this unexpected cover of such a classic song. David Draiman is indeed a very very trained vocalist. He has worked on his instrument for many years. He is every inch a professional. I love it. I love his music. I love his range. I loved watching you experience this. It was awesome. Thank you for sharing!! ❤️
Good reaction. I just found this song in early July, 2023. I thought it was excellent, especially their Official Video with words, pictures, and vocals.
David Draimen was classically trained. He was also very sick with the flu on this live show. That's why he was sitting through the whole performance. He felt too weak to stand.
Anastasia, you need to listen to his Album, Evolution. Fantastic Album. There is " Hold Onto Memories" A tear inducing song "A Reason to Fight" A song about fighting addiction and depression! My favorite since I fought depression and alcoholism. Sober for 22 & a half years now! "Already Gone" I really like your song that you were playing at the beginning! He also did a cover of Sting's song " If I Ever Lose My Faith In You"....which is amazing!
Great reaction!!! You need to listen to the song David Draiman wrote after taking his young son to the the movie Coco. It's called Hold On To Memories. Beautiful and haunting......I'm 70 yrs old and discovered Disturbed in 2018.......I've requested in advance to have this played at my funeral (in the not so near future). If you make the decision to react to this video find the video of them singing live in concert and be prepared to shed tears.....so have a box of tissues close at hand! ❤️🎧❤️
Anastasia Luna, I just subscribed to your channel. I am delighted to see your depth of your analysis of the performers, in this case Disturbed. Thank you for helping us learn more about voice!
The fact that you were saying everyone knows down with the sickness and bring me to life but didn’t express that everyone should know Simon and Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence?
He was sick to his stomach the night he appeared on the Conan show and had to work hard to make it through the song. Despite his refusal they used "autotune" on his performance.
David has a high level of professionalism and years of performance experience. He also was trained as a hazzan (Jewish cantor) which I think allows him to connect with the spiritual aspects of the song to induce an emotional reaction to the song.
You would also adore his cover of Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You". Another song that showcases great singing is "The Light" I'd suggest the studio versions of each... you know now that he can totally do it live, and in both of them, the videos are very poignant and moving. And yes, David is professionally trained, as a cantor. It's always interesting to me to learn which rock singers are classically trained and which ones go on raw talent... specifically that _so many_ of the great ones do have extensive training. There are, of course, a rare few natural hyper-talents like Tatiana Shmayluk and Freddie Mercury who just go out there and wing it in more raw talent than any five normal singers. Then there are the even rarer cases like Dimash, who has _both_ the level of raw talent of a Tati or a Freddie _and_ tons and tons of training and refinement. Fun fact: The producer turned on a little autotune at one point early on when David was just a touch flat on a note (likely because he was sick as a dog). If you watch closely, you can see the sharp glare he cast to him when he noticed it, as if to say "Dude, what the hell??" Then, a few seconds later, an eye-widening emphasis stare like "I said turn it _off!"_ Then a look of determination as if to say, "Fine, if you're gonna autotune me, I'm gonna be so perfect it just sits there and does nothing..."
Have YOU never heard the Sound of Silence before this? Simon and Garfunkle's hit from the 1960s? Wow! Great song, and Disturbed's is even better than the original.
His grandfather was the cantor of the largest synagogue in Jerusalem. David was trained to be a cantor. At first, he wasn't sure about doing this cover. He hadn't tried to sing like this since he was 18. To say that he was pleased is an understatement.
This is my favorite band. Amazing range and relevant topics. They definitely put their personal experiences into their lyrics. Way too many favorite songs to list. “Hold onto Memories “, “The Light “ are so relevant and inspirational. The other side of the coin is “Into the Fire”. The personal connection to David is chilling. Any way you look at it, this band is amazing.
He was sitting because he had a fever of 102° and they were afraid that he would fall down if he wasn’t sitting, I can barely hear it in his voice, in his life performance, it’s there, but it’s just slightly.

No most don't know my immortal, Amy"s amazing voice.... Great reaction, will check out what else you have done. Cheers🍷
I've binged a lot of reaction channels listening to this song today to get a feel for other peoples reactions to it and of them, I've only subbed to you and one other and that's for the exact same reason. When I see you EXCITEDLY talking about parts of the song, stopping, replaying, talking about it over and over, that shows to me that you're into the song, that you know what you're talking about and you're PASSIONATE about it and that's what I love to see. Don't change this, keep this level of love and commitment to the reacts, it's things like this that people want to see because through you we get to feel the same level of excitement that we all felt the first time hearing this song. At 2:42 I can bet I know exactly what was going through your head at that moment. "wait what? Oh my god, wow!" because that's the feeling we all got at this song for the first time (I remember going "pft, Disturbed doing sound of silence, yeah right." to a friend who showed me this and I got laughed at for the "oh my god" face lol)
As far as I'm aware he's classically trained. David Draiman is one of the dest vocalists in metal. Give Darkness from their first album a listen to. It's like early 2000s.

"Already Gone"
I really like your song that you were playing at the beginning!
He also did a cover of Sting's song " If I Ever Lose My Faith In You"....which is amazing!
A Master Class of singing. And this after 30 years of singing Metal!!
amazing voice. just unearthly.
Just want you to know, he sang this while he was ill from flu, but wanted to still go on. AND refused auto tune
He was a cantor. And he's amazing. 😊
Fantastic reaction love and respect God bless 🙏 from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing 👍.
Disturbed has an absolutely gorgeous song, Hold on to Memories, which really showcases how beautiful David's voice is.
You're definitely a rockstar too.
David is one in a million.
Anastasia Luna, I just subscribed to your channel. I am delighted to see your depth of your analysis of the performers, in this case Disturbed.
Thank you for helping us learn more about voice!
He was sick when he did this, even though he sounded amazing. You DEFINITELY need to see the official video for the song.
As a long time fan of Disturbed I have to recommend "A Reason to Fight" Epic song. "The Light" is also a great one as well.
David has a high level of professionalism and years of performance experience. He also was trained as a hazzan (Jewish cantor) which I think allows him to connect with the spiritual aspects of the song to induce an emotional reaction to the song.
I didn’t know Disturbed or any metal bands, before I saw this video.
You would also adore his cover of Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You".
Another song that showcases great singing is "The Light"
I'd suggest the studio versions of each... you know now that he can totally do it live, and in both of them, the videos are very poignant and moving.
There was a song on their second album called Darkness it was the very first time i heard David's clean voice that was an amazing song also
Have YOU never heard the Sound of Silence before this? Simon and Garfunkle's hit from the 1960s? Wow! Great song, and Disturbed's is even better than the original.
David is classically trained.. Performed this with a nasty heady cold. Respect.
David was a Cantor in his family's Jewish church. That's the training you're hearing.
How he's standing?? He was sitting on a stool. "That will fuck with your pitch"....classic professional description😝👍 Love your reaction 💞
He was sitting because he had a fever of 102° and they were afraid that he would fall down if he wasn’t sitting, I can barely hear it in his voice, in his life performance, it’s there, but it’s just slightly.
The official music video for this cover is awesome as well. The visuals add another layer.
I know amazing....poor guy had a cold too. David was a cantor... in church... I love the growl its him send that mssg... You need to see the official video Just amazing. You
have too see him do Of I ever lose my faith....
Then remake of Genesis lamd of Confusion, Ten Thousand fists in the air.
Ohh girl I am almost 60.
David had extreme training to become a cantor in the Synagogue and his vocal range is amazing! ps Watched your "Winter" video, you are great....and gorgeous!!
Here are a couple of disturbed suggestions, their cover of Sting's If I ever lose my faith in you, The Light, hold on to memories are less heavy songs, enjoyed your reaction.
You need to see The Offical Disturbed Video of " Sound of Silence." The Visuals are Great!!!
Hello from Kazakhstan ! I am subscriber .Thank you Anastasia. for introducing us tu such wonderful singers! Please make a reaction to a young singer from Kazakhstan ,a friend of Dimash. His name is Ernar Sadirbaev (Ернар Садирбаев “ Melodrama “Голос-нокауты-сезон 10 ) « Melodramma, --end “Part-Time Lover
it's brilliant that you know all the technical stuff,,, but you seemed not to hear the thought prevoking lyrics,, this song has such a powerful message,, still your vocal knowledge is Amazing,, Thank you...............
David was trained to be a cantor for his Jewish community. I love the sickness type stuff, but the guy can sing anything. Finally saw Disturbed live, and he was recovering from pneumonia...Great show.🤘🤘🤘✌
Yes he was classically trained. This is in my top 5 favorite songs.
Great reaction! I can never get enough of these reactions. This version to me not only highlights David's voice but let's the instruments be the focus, the original video let's you visually see the story. You should check that out as well. Other songs I'd love to see a reaction to is A reason to fight and hold on to Memories. Really showcases David's beautiful voice. So much emotion and not bad on the eyes either lol
Really enjoyed your reaction. Please don't change yourself to please others.
awsome male vocalist..disturbed is arguably the best cover band out they have done a few all awsome...thank you for the react....look into more of there covers...
Yes he doesn't just scream.... he's classically trained as a cantor...Hes Phenomenal!!!!
