A lot of people think the Conan show version is better but personally I think this one, done in the studio with the added video clips is amazing, for me the visuals really add something to the song. The ending with the boat load of musicians crossing over to meet up with the song writers and the sun rising to dispel the fog, amazing.

Don't you hate when UA-cam plasters those popup ads/links for other videos over the end of music videos (and sometimes right in the middle of them)? Music videos are quite literally someone's ART. It's like a painter that pours his heart and soul into creating something beautiful on a canvas... and then some uncultured clod comes along and slaps bumper stickers on it. It tells you everything you need to know about the disrespectful children running this platform.

To understand the lyrics, you must know the story behind them. Art Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Sanford Greenberg who loved music and literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel helped him to class, filled our forms and papers, etc. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. With that Sound of Silence was published. Sanford Greenberg went on to Harvard and Oxford and became a wealthy businessman.

I have been diagnosed with PTSD. This song spoke to me the second I heard it. I am a HUGE Disturbed fan. This was gold to me. I wholeheartedly agree that silence is in fact worse than saying the wrong thing and that void which is left is filled in instantly with everything the mind is biased to, good or not. Dealing with your demons of what you have done in your life, who that effected and how spiritually you have to come to grips it. It's not easy. Faith, a supportive loving family and 2 undeniable friends (along with my 2 German Shepherds) kept me from losing my mind. Today, I am well adjusted, faithful, and grateful for all I have and have been thru. God is truly great.
    To those on the edge:
A permanent solution to a temporary problem is not the answer. Eating a Glock, or an OD is NOT the answer. You are going thru what you are going thru because God created you to be able to withstand anything thrown at you. He would never give you something you can't handle. There is always a lesson to be learned. You might not see it; it might not be obvious but believe it. I have seen the depths of hell and I'm still here. Life experiences I now have had have a lifelong passion to honest discussions about the evil of drugs, the lie that "oh I'm ok to dive after a few drinks" and mental illness IS real. I have loved and lost loved ones to those evils. What I didn't lose is my faith. Because of my faith, I still have my sanity.
    #GOD #GODISGREAT #PRAY #DISTURBED #MENTALAMANDA #AMERICAFIRST
    Keep the faith amigos!

My mission is, as it has always been, to serve God, serve my family + extended family and serve my country. At 61, I can still serve and no better place to start than with the almighty.
Much love and support my friend. Stay the course. God will never leave you or ever hang you out to dry. May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Watch your 6. Every day there seems to be a new level of stupidity.

First time watching your channel. As someone who battled depression for a very long time, I love the fact that you are using your platform to talk about mental health issues that most avoid. I struggled for roughly 26 years with severe depression. To make a long story short I turned back to God and started serving in church in youth ministry and after 5 or 6 months I realized that I was no longer depressed. I still have a few minor issues with it here and there but it's finally so much better for the last 20 years. I really appreciated what you said at the end of the video about the things people say, meaning well but it definitely pushes you down even more.

I love the original, and I love this. Fantastic reaction - glad you did the video! The ending, where you have the people who can play the music sailing towards the people who write the music but they haven't met yet, has a seed of hope amid the anger that the warning was ignored (see other comments), but it doesn't show a happy ending. We all need a bit of hope, but not false hope, so I think that was a great balance to strike.

When you opened with the theme of the dangers of isolation, I was reminded of a thought I’ve had before. Many times, when someone has been lost to the rest of us, as in perished, there is often a very deciding factor: they were alone. Whatever the crisis was, there was no one else there who could’ve saved them. So I’ve realized the presence of others is vital at times. Surely the most during those experiences which threaten a level of darkness. And this rendition of the song is dramatic, powerful and outstanding.

A very original response, tying the lyrics to the lack of listening/not listening, feeling alone, etc. Typically, and in my case, it's really about the silence of society in the face of injustices, etc., but I think it works beautifully the way you approach it.

I found it really interesting to hear an interpretation that saw the song as being focused on the individual person and their needs. I've always heard it as being more a comment on society at large, with the "sound" of silence being the clamour of millions of people talking past each other. It's noisy, but in terms of meaning it may as well be silence. Thank you for opening my eyes to another possible reading.

But your now, my demons, and my dark soul have taken all I'm worth and I'm sad because the fight! My tears, are nearing a end, I know is coming! First time viewer. I was a bit surprised by your take on the song but it makes sense. As others have already pointed out it is about society's inability to communicate with each other on a meaningful level (and the danger in that) due to the distractions of our daily lives (but primarily technology). Your take on communicating with those going through mental illness is certainly a aspect of that. The song is even more relevant today (with people not being able to look up from their phones and have an actual conversation).
In case you are unaware. The lead singer of Disturbed (David Draiman) has had his own issues with mental health and is a huge mental health advocate.
On your thoughts including religion. Not religious myself but your thoughts on 'preaching' are very valid for myself although for slightly different reasoning. I got all the usual religious platitudes you mentioned and more in dealing with my anxiety from my family. I repeatedly spoke about not wanting to hear it and if they want me to respect them for their religious beliefs they need to respect that I have no interest and don't want to hear it. My objections to this time and again fell on deaf ears. As a result I completely cut off my family and have not spoken to any of them in over seven years.
I will say further on mental illness one of the other major issues I had was expectations from close family and friends just assuming I would snap out of it and be the old me. Those kind of expectations are not only unreasonable but also completely dismissive of something very real I was dealing with.
Back to the song. "Silence like a cancer grows", are the most important words in this song for me and is the warning of things to come if the inability to communicate is not corrected. The phrase the silence is deafening' was never truer for me than on 9/11 as the world (and in particular those in North America) watched in stunned silence as the day played out. That said, once again, it makes sense how you interpreted the song and that is also and important message but the true message is so much more vast and important to not just the future of those dealing with mental illness but to all of mankind.

Loved it. Great song and cover. In your darkness speak up seek help, Don’t be a statistic. Been in the darkness before and found out that I was the light in my darkness. With seeing my light I was able to speak up seek help. My psychiatrist has been a great help along with some family and a few close friends. Now I’m on a spiritual journey and loving life. I have grown to be comfortable in my own skin and ignore the negative (black clouds) to focus on the positive. Unfortunately, the "perfection" in David's vocals it's because they were pitch-corrected. I'm sure David didn't agree with it one bit but I guess the record label executives didn't leave him much choice. It's a shame that we are being devoided of the human element in music, which is ironic because that's exactly what Disturbed wanted to protest about with this video.

I've been hoping you would do a reaction of this song, and I'm glad you picked the music video instead of the live version.
I expected that your perspective on it would be right on target - and you surpassed my highest hopes!
You instantly understood what the song is all about, and I love what you said about it in terms of faith. I've encountered the same kind of "Religianity" more times than I care to remember. Your insight on this shows a great deal of spiritual maturity, and goes to the heart of what is really SUPPOSED to be fundamental to Christianity; compassionate Christ-likeness.
I know I'll almost certainly never meet you in this world, but I pray that I will in paradise. You seem like one of the most genuinely good-hearted people around. Thank you for sharing your amazing self - and for the times you've shared your own pain with complete strangers like me. I knew that sharing our burdens makes them lighter. But you've shown me the next step beyond that: Your sharing of your burdens through this chanel has lightened my own burdens, in spite of my never having shared a single one of my burdens with you. Thank you for that.
You have been and are a blessing to me.
I feel like I'm supposed to add one more thing:
You are also 'enough'. And you're Not 'too much'. ...The twin lies of being 'not enough', yet somehow still 'too much' are some of the most terrible weapons the enemy hurls at us - and especially at women, who he hates more than any man.
You are enough, and I'm glad you're my sister. 😇
    Take care of your heart

These lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel are spectacular. I like writing poetry, I've never been able to write an opening that grabs you immediately with that deep emotion, such as "Hello darkness my old friend".
I like Disturbed's version a lot. There is a great cover of this version by an opera singer called Henk Poort, if you want to listen (not necessarily react to it) you can search for Beste Zangers Henk Poort Sound of Silence. Beste Zangers (Best singers) is a singing show from the Netherlands. The people who were present there, said when Henk got to the low notes, the whole room vibrated with his intense voice.

Simon and Garden owl sang this song in the late 1960's. I was depressed and an alcoholic for many years, and hid it for years. On July 31, 1999 I stopped drinking and got help for the depression. I fight the depression still...as I still don't feel my wife of 24 years still doesn't understand me. Being an artist is very difficult, as I often feel like my wife doesn't even like me, nor my artwork!

Great reaction!
