I’m a 73 year old grandma who still has the original S & G vinyl that includes this song. I accidentally came across the Disturbed’s video version in 2020 as everything locked down because of the pandemic descended. I was blown away. I’ve since checked out the bands concert performances and other videos and came to love them, even the heavy metal. I’ve been checking in on re actions by others (voice teachers, musicians, reacters) and your response has been the most Savvy and complete one I’ve heard. Thank you!
I too, at 70, discovered this version by Disturbed in 2021, as the pandemic lockdowns enslaved most of the world. The emotion and intensity of this song made me weep every time I listened to it for the first couple of weeks listening to it over and over.
The best description of this performance that I've seen is: Simon & Garfunkel's version was the warning of where our society was going, and Disturbed's version is an expression of the frustration and anger that the warning has been ignored. Paul Simon is an absolute genius in the composition of this song. He and Art performed it with a "sweetness" and softness that actually belied the importance of the song. I've always felt it was one of the most prophetic of my long life. David pounded it home with a sledgehammer, and we needed it desperately! And yet society still does not hear!! We are so self-centric, so self-absorbed, see ourselves as a star, around which planets orbit, when we are actually asteroids, and are only significant when we lift others - allowing our eyes to drift away from ourselves. It's a masterpiece for a second time.
Very well said. David's version, combined with the symbolism of the video have made this an amazing audio and visual experience. I only wish he wasn't sick when Conan was filmed.
When Paul Simon heard Disturbed perform this song on Conan O'Brien he tweeted that from now on this song belongs to you! To me that would be the highest form of a compliment when the author of the song says it's no longer his but Disturbed's.
A similar thing happened after Johnny Cash covered Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, after his cover released Trent Reznor (the lead vocalist of Nine Inch Nails) said in an interview that Hurt was now Johnny's song.
Your entire comment is a lie! No, Paul Simon did NOT tweet anything, and he did NOT say this in the Email he sent to David. For crying out loud you can google what he emailed, because David made it public! Your not even close!
With 7 years of struggling with the dark demon's inside, I see and hear this song in a different light to most people.... I cried like a baby when I first heard Disturbed's version, and after hearing this many dozens of times, I still cry every-time I hear David Draiman sing this version.
Thank you for sharing that. It’s very interesting to me how everyone sees and hears various things. From what you said, it sounds like you’ve had your share of very hard times. I hope you can find the shore. You are not alone. I appreciate you stopping by here
Me as well. To me it is about Heaven in a way. I never thought much of this song until this version. Now at least once a week I jam to it a few times to get those emotions to come up.
And that is imo the best reaction to have to this because that tells you it's hit all the right places. If this performance and MV doesn't touch you on some emotional level then you are...Well...Disturbed....sorry, couldn't help myself.
I absolutely know the feeling. His voice hits the core of your every being..I love his voice too..God gave him so much talent for singing ..He is very blessed.
Paul didn't add it to his social media from the video, he added their live performance of this song from the Conan show. You want epic...then check that out! Piano, acoustic guitar, big drums and a full string orchestra... Epic period!
It’s not often when a cover can stand on par with the original, but god damn if Disturbed didn’t do a hell of a job with it. And paid proper respect to the song by keeping the lyrics, unlike what Fred Durst to Behind Blue Eyes…
@@suevee8114 He did. David was actually upset that they autotuned a small portion of that live performance, and, in all honesty, I have to agree that he didn't need it there.
@@STILL-KICKIN It might just be a confusion of terminology. Classical training usually means training in a specific classical repertoire like opera etc. Cantors can have formal training but it isn't 'classical' in the sense most people use it in western music. Cantors are often trained privately, like many classical vocalists are. It doesn't necessarily mean formal training like a degree from a music school. Edited to add: my mom was a classically trained opera singer with a degree in vocal performance and a private voice teacher for many years. She's over 70 now so she doesn't sing as much as she used to, and of course her range isn't as wide, but she can still make the hair stand up on the back of your neck singing Ave Maria.
@@chinbeard3852 and yet "classical" is not a word where classical music have monopoly over it strictly speaking, there is classic rock, classic blues... You get what i mean. Anyway classically trained cantor i guess here means traditionally but within cantor word may be called classical.
@@galadballcrusher8182 I get you, but when people say 'classical guitar' and 'classic rock guitar' we usually understand the distinction. One of them is a guy with his foot on a stool playing Bach on a nylon string guitar, and the other is Clapton playing Layla on a Strat. Context has a lot to do with it. Isn't the English language great?
@@chinbeard3852 incidentally i am a metalhead who grew up being the guy with the foot on the small stool and the nylon strings...but not so much Bach, usually it is Tarrega and Corelli and later some Albeniz
Davis was in training to be a Cantor. In an interview (sorry, don't have a link), he said he was expelled during his Sophomore year after an "altercation" with a Senior in the weight room.
His voice begins like a gentle rain with looming clouds on the horizon, builds slowly to a down pour, crescendos into a raging storm, then finally gives us a little peak of the sun as the rain eases back to a gentle mist.
I am a HUGE Disturbed fan. I've loved them for years. I will never forget when this went public! No matter how much I already knew they could rock it. I never expected what they did with it! David is one of the most emotional and powerful singers that have graced my ears, IMHO. It never ceases to hit me every time I hear or see it. I'm so glad you discovered it. A couple others to experience more of Disturbed are The Light and Hold Onto the Memories. There are many more. But those are great ones to start with.
I heard this song first in the sixties as a kid. I always interpreted it as being a condemnation of television, breaking up communications within families, within communities. Now it is applicable to mobile phone and netflix etc. I think David made an incredible cover of this song. It has lost it's folky feeling and become something much more under Disturbed's interpretation. His anger developing over the more morose and intraspective beginning. But it ends with hope that there is a way out of the silence. Epic, as you said, is what Draiman's did here.
INIGUALABLE
Even Simon himself liked the cover enough to email Draiman directly, stating: "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." 🤯 Love your reactions, btw. 😄
I always like to describe David Draiman’s voice as a Lamborghini V12 engine. Smooth and subtle at low power, it develops into this strong and full throated rumble when he’s cruising, but when he puts the power down, it becomes this bellowing roar that you notice from a mile away and leaves you shuddering. One of the most powerful and unique voices I’ve ever heard. Disturbed is a band you should definitely check out some more of, and not just for more of Draiman’s voice. You’ll find as you delve into metal some more, that there is a surprising depth to the music and lyrical content, and Disturbed is well known for songs that often touch on very sensitive, and sometimes taboo, issues of mental health and emotional well-being with a no nonsense but positive attitude and genuine concern for their fellow humans. Given your propensity for the psychological and sociological aspects of music, I think you would find a lot to interest you there. Especially songs like “down with the sickness”, “inside the fire”, “the light”, “prayer”, “reason to fight”, and many others I can’t quite think of right now. Also, as you mentioned you like middle eastern style of music, you’re bound to hear some ME elements within their work and especially in Draiman’s singing as he is a classically trained Jewish cantor and that shows up a lot in his vocal flourishes and mannerisms.
The original was written in sadness as a warning about the direction society was taking. This version starts out with the sadness but develops into anger in that society hadn't heeded the warning, more engrossed in the shallowness of the connections of the internet or phones, rather than actual personal connections.
S&G were performing an early version of the song in New York at Gerde's Folk City, a Greenwich Village club that hosted Monday night performances in September 1963, a month before the Kennedy assassination. I have always thought that in the United States, younger adults and kids were affected by increased insecurities on a subconscious level by the Cold War rhetoric and the imminent threat of nuclear destruction made real by the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
I know it’s a warning sign to society but I connect with it because I am a people pleaser trying to set boundaries. I also have depression and it’s so resonant with the sound of silence. It represents that isolation that can happen . And the first line reminds me of when the depression first starts up again, when it’s minor and I can deal with it. It’s like slowly moving down a water slide until suddenly you hit the steep drop and fall really fast 15 feet.
Great Reaction! I have watched over 100 Reactions to this song, lol, and almost 50% of reactors don't know that its a cover of the Classic Simon & Garfunkel song from the 60's. Your education of this Song and your pure natural reaction was a refreshing one! IMO - The Best Cover of ANY Song EVER Done! Period.
I've listened to this song since the 60's when it came out. Even in the S&G original I could see the symbolism - materialism as the dead gods we worship. But this version lifts the message to another dimensional level, emotionally and spiritually. Your reaction analysis is by far, the BEST I have listened to.
Im a Norwegian metalhead, i love NW, Distrubed and many many more. But i have to say this preformence from David is one for the hall of fame. But his live of this is even better! Its mindblowing... also I think you would absulutly love the band Spiritbox, with the "Circle With Me Courtney Laplante ONE TAKE Live " She sings live and one take, its all over the net now. People are in awe of what she is doing. :)
You should watch the version of this when they were on Conan O'Brian. David Draiman was very sick with the flu and advised not to sing live that night. He was running a fever of 103°. He had to use a little auto-tune but most of it was all HIM! Amazing work ethic! Oh also: he studied to be a Jewish cantor before Disturbed. That is why he has that strong, deep, and resonating sound! Perfection in my opinion! Late edit: others pointed out that it was Conan O'Brian. Thank you for clarifying😁
The Conan live version has a new layer. His connection with the audience and how he pulls you in with his stage presence is missing in the music video.
I was in high school when this came out, and when I heard it with Disturbed 🤪🤯 just blew my mind. I'm able to compare both, and came to the same conclusion that it's still relivent today. You are absolutely on point and correct. Paul Simon gave big praise to Disturbed 👍. Great heartfelt reaction.
It amazes me how relevant this song is today having been written in the early sixties. I remember the original pop version. This version is so powerful and really feels truer to the words of the song..
This song is special, in a way that makes the word 'special' sound completely inadequate. It's one of my favorite songs to show people who claim that metal artists aren't real musicians, and that metal is just screaming. Thank you for checking it out. You touch on a very good point. Metal doesn't shy away from emotions - any emotions. It doesn't avoid them, sugarcoat them or speak about them in hushed tones. Metal drives into and through emotions like a freight train, confronting them headlong. Metal is passion. And that's why I'm a metalhead. The original version of this song sounds like a plea to me. "Hey, watch out. We're heading in this direction." This version sounds like a final warning to me. "We warned you! This is where we're headed!" To answer your question, I'm from the Netherlands.
I agree! Randy Rhoades was a excellent example of how good a metal player can be. Check out his acoustic guitar classical music on OZZY's song "Diary Of A Madman", which turns into heavy metal. Just epic as well! Thanks!
I've always loved the visual of one group "harvesting" the instruments and delivering them to the other group who has written the music, even though they don't have instruments. It's all about working together and connecting as a society.
I feel this version is really so faithful to the original and yet so radically disturbed. It's a fantastic piece and really at this point I'd just continue to be gushing over how amazing this cover is
@@rosalieelliottofficial thanks! I know I've seen other people make the comment on other reactions to this piece, but I feel it holds true and should be stated, The original was the warning, disturbeds version is the rage that the warning wasn't heeded
I loved this. The expression on your face toward the end is priceless. To me, this is 1 of 3 greatest covers ever done along with Johnny Cash Hurt and PTX Hallelujah. Keep up your good work.
Hallelujah.. ptxs version is on another level. But i must inform you that there is one version that rages above all. . . That is axel rudi pells version! It stops there!
This version of The Sound of Silence is an experience of heart and soul. It grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go. It's not a listening experience, it's a lived experience.
David has stated he wanted the band to do this cover because it was the only way his parents would listen to his music. I suggest starting with their breakout hit Down with the Sickness… you will definitely see another side to his voice. It also helps highlight how well trained a singer he is that his voice is so good decades later.
I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel... have ALL their albums, along with my daddy's other almost 200 albums. The original version does sound like a warning of sorts but THIS one is like the final warning! I get chills every single time and your reaction was spot on!!! Your facial expressions were right on target with my chills. LOVED THIS!!! I want more!! Josh Groban recorded Bridge Over Troubled Water and it is on his latest album, Bridges. There are several great songs on that album and his voice is... just wow!!
I have seen this band at least five times and they brought nothing but they are the best every single time! When David came out to start the show, the first thing he said to the crowd was “My Brothers! My Sisters! My Blood! We are Disturbed!” He made you family. He brought you along for his ride, and it was a hell of a ride!! That’s what they do with every bit of their music, including this amazing remake of a classic.
Hello Rosalie, great reaction! This is one of the few songs where I think the cover version surpasses the original. I am quite old ;D but the original lyrics by Paul Simon are still so relatable. Originally he was reacting to the consumerism of the new media of television :O in relation to radio, but if we ignore the obvious anachronism of 'neon' the words are totally modern. In todays world, we would talk about the fact that everyone is into social media and permanently looking at their mobile telephones, that computer algorithms dictate what the people 'see', since you are only shown things similar to what you like. In this process - again, controlled by a computer - you could miss an incredible amount of content that could change your vision of the world. The good thing in this case is that reactors like you are shown things that you would normally not be interested in, because your listeners point you in the right direction. Other people are sometimes kept in a bubble of their own making and don't get the 'big picture'. This song was, however, a different direction of the band Disturbed, even Paul Simon said he was impressed by this particular cover. If you want to get a better idea of the normal content of the band, I can recommend the song 'Down with the Sickness' by Disturbed. Fun Fact: The lead singer, David Drayman has classical training which is shown in this cover by his masterful control of his voice in order to bring the meaning to people without overdoing the singing.
Isn’t it amazing that the words of this song are so relevant even today. I grew up in the 60’s listening to this song but this version really touched me! Z
I found this video a few week ago and have been obsessed with watching it. It hits hard. The most beautiful, visually and emotionally captivating version ever!
Thanks for this R! Another great reaction to a classic but this version by Disturbed is so awesome, right? That being said, please pretty please with a cherry on top check out their live performance featuring Myles Kennedy (lead singer from Alter Bridge) which I believe is even better -if you can believe that's possible!! Check it here: ua-cam.com/video/H3By4DZyTNM/v-deo.html And it's also a perfect segway for me to recommend Alter Bridge: 'Down To My Last', 'In Loving Memory', 'Watch Over You', 'Open Your Eyes' and so many more. IMHO Myles Kennedy has got to be one of the greatest voices nowadays! Cheers!!
Disturbed version of this song talks to me in a very deep way. The lyrics of the song done this way really brings out the meaning of the words and the emotions those words create.
The Rock/Metal section has some very incredible vocalists. If you want to be blown away by another outstanding artist, I recommend you to check out Alter Bridge - Words darker than their wings, live at Royal Albert Hall. Myles Kennedy is one of the most gifted artists out there.
Hi Rosalie! 🤗✨💗 Wow - I've had so many chances to listen to this before, but haven't until now. This song has a special place in my heart - goes back to HS and a song/dance group I led. A very special time in my life with rare beauty and comfort. And I'll admit, knowing Disturbed made a version of it, I stayed away from this, being worried I might bruise that memory. (I don't always respond well to angry music). But goodness - this was amazing! Such a powerful interpretation, performance, and visual message. Gave me a similar vibe to when I heard American Pie for the first time (mostly from the complexity I think). This interpretation is deep and dark - the visual at the end of all the musicians and instruments in the same life boat, perhaps floating to the hopeful safety of a new unknown - so powerful - and a vision of perseverance. I agree - epic. Life is often so challenging - holding onto positive memories from the past is safe and hard to risk. But this was certainly worth pushing through that worry. Thank you for helping guide me to this growth. I respect you, my friend. 🥰😘🎶
thank you for sharing that, Avila!! So cool to see us growing and learning. I am proud of you and appreciate you sharing this here. I also like what you said about "floating to the hopeful safety of the unknown" - interesting and well worded! good way to interpret that.
The musicians stand on one shore and the music writers on the other in this video. Until they come together there is silence. They are coming together as the video ends.
It always makes me happy to see someone coming to realize just how talented most hard rock/metal vocalist and musicians really are. Many are even classically trained. Welcome to the journey! Edit: I would point to you Unleash the Archers (Awakening or Legacy) or Ad Infinitum (Fire and Ice, Marching on Versailles or See You in Hell ) for more really talented female leads and jaw dropping musicians.
A lot of people may not be aware, but the lead singer of Disturbed (David Draiman) is a Julliard trained singer. That range is evident when he sings songs like this.
Also a great cover of this song was done by Henk Poort, opera singer, who sang it specially for Floor Jansen in the show “Beste Zangers 2019. He did in the style of Disturbed and even learned distortion to please Floor.
As so many have said before me....I feel that Simon and Garfunkels version was a warning for what to come, Disturbeds is a scream of what is. And my God!!! You analyzed this lyrics SO well! :)
I’m about a half-hour north of Seattle, Washington. The original reprise version of this song is of course quietly haunting. Disturbed ordinarily rocks out hard. But instead this remake is definitely more subtle, powerful and dramatic. And that’s true that almost anything can consume someone if they dive deeply into it.
I love this cover. I saw a comment of this cover that stuck to me. The original of S & G is a warning of a calamity that will happen if humanity continues doing what it does. The cover by Disturbed is the aftermath of not listening on the warning.
The first song I heard from them was Down With The Sickness (probably their signature radio song) but 10,000 Fists, Stupify, and the Phil Collins cover Land of Confusion are all amazing!
Would like to your reaction to more songs of this band, because I absolutely love this band, and this song is a vast difference in sound and overall tone that the band normally does. So a reaction to “Down with the Sickness” (one the their first songs that put them on the map), gives you an idea of their normal sound, but not the full picture.
It got a good reaction and I can see it getting better and better,The more you lose your prejudices against metal, the better it gets.your reactions and insights to the songs will become more interesting and more honest and empathetic.the direction is very good, keep up the good work Ps:just a kind note: if you can and have the opportunity, always try to find a live version of the given song. For example, the live version of this song on Conan O'Brien is brilliant...thanks and good luck😀
What a passionate, analytical approach to this amazing review. Your reaction to this song was truly honest and truthfully amazing. This version encapsulates the struggle my best friend lived through with pancreatitis and the pain he endured. The darkness that surrounded his life began with his wife dying from cancer. His guilt was having to terminate her life support. As a counselor, I could see he never left that hospital room. Dwelling alone, he mentally tortured himself until he trusted me enough to lead him out of that room. “Like the silent raindrops that fell,” in the lyrics, I was with him in the darkness until he heard my voice. Three years later, he joined her. (because of pancreatitis) This song, this version, reminds me that we cannot give up on helping each other. If we give up on one another, humanity will fail.
A powerful reimagining of a song that already had powerful lyrics. David Draimin was classically trained. Disturbed has a wide range, from very heavy in "Down With The Sickness" to a ballad like this. "Hold On To Memories" is another lighter song vocally, but definitely not emotionally, heavy tissues warning. "The Light" is a little heavier vocally, and also emotionally. P. S. I want to change my song suggestion for The Bass Gang from "Century" to "The Emperor's New Clothes", because it shows off their vocals better.
Anytime I watch and listen to this song and it's been hundreds I still get the chills. It moves me with an almost cosmic awareness of sound and feeling. There are no words. To really describe it fully. Just love it.
I think you will certainly appreciate this LIVE version by Henk Poort . Link : ua-cam.com/video/q_BJaM-UrXc/v-deo.html . Henk Poort is an Opera Baritone who learned in 24 hours especially for Floor Jansen how to sing with disstorcie especially for Her evening/episode of Beste Zangers 2019( Best Singers ) because she thinks it is such a beautiful song and also liked the cover of Dissturpt so much. he sang it in that version for her
I grew up with S&G and have to say that Disturbed brought it over the top! This version will go down in history in the top ten of all time. Now, I have one song that I can only listen to once a year and I would love to hear your view on it. On the anniversary of my wife’s funeral each year, Slaughter’s acoustic version of Fly To The Angels fills my airwaves. Why? A Southern Rock Musician friend “spoke” at her memorial by singing this song as HIS tribute (many thanks to Greg!). Please consider doing a review
No cuts in her analysis! Rosalie is great at speaking her ideas and doesn't seem to need multiple cuts to express herself succinctly. Second video I've watched and I'm a big fan already.
Another great, and perceptive reaction, Rosalie. IMO this is one of the greatest covers in modern music. It is a testament to this arrangement, that it has been covered by quite a few other varied artists, Pentatonix, and Henk Poort to name a couple. That is often overshadowed by David Draiman's virtuoso performance. I think Down With The Sickness might be considered Disturbed's signature song, but this one is their most popular, I would guess. A couple of other recs: This might be a bit detailed, but it might make a really compelling dramatic reaction. Do you know who Christina Grimmie is? If not, she was a young YT musical sensation and later a popular contestant on The Voice. If you happen to not know anything about her, I would recommend doing the following together in one reaction, without research: Titanium ua-cam.com/video/yQg9wCR_xPw/v-deo.html Wrecking Ball ua-cam.com/video/RLM4PEFJOeU/v-deo.html News ua-cam.com/video/hKOe5iIg1cY/v-deo.html If you do know the story, but not the music, either of those performances are great in different ways . Titanium done indy solo in a small home studio and Wrecking Ball on The Voice, killing it in the blind audition. The last is just a short news story about later events. Another really talented singer guitarist who does it his way is Chris Klafford. If not familiar with him, he was a Swedish Idol winner and AGT contestant. He does really beautiful covers and originals on his channel, called the Kitchen Sessions. Maybe his cover of Imagine might work as a reaction? The AGT version might be a bit difficult copyright wise, but his Kitchen session of it is really lovely, and shouldn't be problematic.
thank you for the great suggestions and links and for kind comment on my reaction. I will check out the artists suggested as I'm able to, but making a note :)
Amazing rendition. I'd say that the live version on Conan is far more impactful and emotional, and an absolute must-watch, even if supposedly there is some auto-tuning on it. Definitely check that out. It's far better in my opinion than this video, due in part to seeing him actually perform it. Great reaction as always.
Wow! What an epic song - what fantastic music, what a haunting performance. - And: what a strong and peaceful 'weapon' that could be able to end any war on the spot.
If you want to hear a better version live with no auto-tune, you should listen to Henk Poort's rendition of the song on Beste Zangers. Btw, Floor Jenson is also on that show and has some amazing songs.
8 months on... this react is still on the staylist. LOVE love love your channel. Danke for making the room brighter. Peace and Love to You and to Yours. 💜feeling Good this Sunday and you are a part of it. Hearing ja sing is happiness. Peace and Love.
Not exactly. 5FDP didn’t do bad with Blue on Black. Although, the cover of Bad Company’s “Bad Company”was atrocious. Whoever told them they did a good job remaking it, not covering it, needed their head checked. Also, the Guns n Roses Patience that was covered, was even worse than Bad Company.
Steve from Omaha, Nebraska. Have seen Disturbed 7 times in concert and they get better each time I see them 🤘 In other songs in concert, his voice just pierces your soul. As you say...EPIC !!!
Great interpretation of the lyrics!! :D I find it hard to think someone hasn't heard this and or their live "Conan (TV Appearance) before!! I have been on a binge of reactions to this over the past several days and YOUR reaction is by FAR my favorite so far. Brilliant and amazing feedback and response on so many levels. Thank you for the inspiration and insight!
This is the best version of the song. I grew up listening to the original version as a child. Even Paul Simon is impressed with this version by Disturbed, that definitely says something.
It gives me goosebumps every time. At 73 I think this is my lifetime favorite song.

I appreciate you stopping by here
God be with you. You understand what I understand.
THIS is the way this song was MEANT to be performed. It is so amazing that 2 different artistic visions created it decades apart.
This is the most powerful version of this song I've ever heard. It brings tears to my eyes.
When Paul Simon, himself, adds this song to his personal playlist, I think you made it. :)
for real he did that! yup he made it. :)
Paul didn't add it to his social media from the video, he added their live performance of this song from the Conan show.
You want epic...then check that out!
Piano, acoustic guitar, big drums and a full string orchestra... Epic period!
@@Finnssssss I've heard that the singer had a bad cold on the day of that performance...he hid it well!!
David Draiman is a classically trained cantor..so you can imagine his range.. This is one of the best covers ever done!
One of the best male vocalists on the planet...amazing range and control!
His voice begins like a gentle rain with looming clouds on the horizon, builds slowly to a down pour, crescendos into a raging storm, then finally gives us a little peak of the sun as the rain eases back to a gentle mist.
Wow...absolutely loved your take on this song!
Watching a therapist say, This was freakin epic!, does me good! Awesome! Namaste. 🙌🤠🙌🤘🔥🤘
Hearing them perform this song live, words can not describe the raw emotions that flows through the crowd. The chills last a lifetime.
This version makes the point loudly! This sends the message that is needed to hear in this age. Better than original.
When you were excited about his voice in the first verse I couldn’t wait for you to see how much more amazing he would get ❤
Same 😃
Thank you for understanding the meaning of this song. And for appreciating the emotion and feeling David put into this song.
I would add Inside The Fire to that little list. But yeah like you say they have way too many epic songs to list in full 😃🤘
You really hear & understand the lyrics when David sings this. His voice is pure magic
The generation before you it would have been a condemnation of radio. Before that yellow journalism and pulp magazines.
INIGUALABLE
Even Simon himself liked the cover enough to email Draiman directly, stating: "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." 🤯
Love your reactions, btw. 😄
One of the all time best covers EVER in my opinion.
This is my favorite rendition. It always gives me chills
To me it’s a wake up call to SPEAK UP TO STAND UP to not be silenced anymore. It’s an empowering song. These are my feelings to this magnificent song.
The best version of the song ever made!!
You could have reactions like this to practically Disturbed's whole catalog.
Period.
thank you very much!
I’m torn between this song and Stairway to Heaven by Heart, both are perfection
People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. Those words bring so much emotion to my eyes
I've listened to this song since the 60's when it came out. Even in the S&G original I could see the symbolism - materialism as the dead gods we worship. But this version lifts the message to another dimensional level, emotionally and spiritually. Your reaction analysis is by far, the BEST I have listened to.
“ Nelson Mandela “
Encore une fois merci à vous Madame 🙏
Im a Norwegian metalhead, i love NW, Distrubed and many many more. But i have to say this preformence from David is one for the hall of fame. But his live of this is even better! Its mindblowing... also I think you would absulutly love the band Spiritbox, with the "Circle With Me Courtney Laplante ONE TAKE Live " She sings live and one take, its all over the net now. People are in awe of what she is doing. :)
I am not a fan of Heavy Metal but this group kills it and his vocals are powerful and haunting.
I think it was on Conan O Brian. But i agree, that was good performance.
It was Conan O'Brian.
interesting. i may have to check that out. thank you for the suggestion :) i didn't realize he studied that. that is way cool!
The Conan live version has a new layer. His connection with the audience and how he pulls you in with his stage presence is missing in the music video.
where are you getting your info from, I searched through several searches on every search engine and couldn't find a such claim.
Why are you amazed at the songs longevity?
"I feel like it's going into your soul."
Very true. The best way I've heard it put, "The original makes you think, this makes you feel."
This is where we're headed!"
To answer your question, I'm from the Netherlands.
thank you for sharing. Hello Netherland :) and yes, well said. very somber!
I agree! Randy Rhoades was a excellent example of how good a metal player can be. Check out his acoustic guitar classical music on OZZY's song "Diary Of A Madman", which turns into heavy metal. Just epic as well! Thanks!
The Light with the official video gives us hope even in our darkest hours. Disturbed can do beautiful music even with their normal style.
I've always loved the visual of one group "harvesting" the instruments and delivering them to the other group who has written the music, even though they don't have instruments. It's all about working together and connecting as a society.
I feel this version is really so faithful to the original and yet so radically disturbed. It's a fantastic piece and really at this point I'd just continue to be gushing over how amazing this cover is
I like how you worded that. "radically disturbed". well said!
Keep up your good work.
thank you, Randy! it is a masterpiece
I think you would love the Pentatonix version of this masterpiece as well!
One more I would add, Nightwish - Pink Floyd's High Hopes.
Hallelujah.. ptxs version is on another level. But i must inform you that there is one version that rages above all. . . That is axel rudi pells version! It stops there!
So Hyang's Bridge Over Troubled Water
Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear this version definitely epic
Just an amazing voice and a new song altogether sung the way he did. powerful vocal chops.
I never get tired of hearing this version.
Even Paul Simon thinks so.
Discovered this version about a year ago. Have listened to it hundreds of times. Still brings a tear to my eyes. Thank you for your take on it.
If you're looking for more Disturbed songs then I definitely recommend Land of Confusion and Sons of Plunder!
It gives me shivers everytime I listen to it
I love his beautiful timber in his voice
Check it here:
ua-cam.com/video/H3By4DZyTNM/v-deo.html
And it's also a perfect segway for me to recommend Alter Bridge: 'Down To My Last', 'In Loving Memory', 'Watch Over You', 'Open Your Eyes' and so many more. IMHO Myles Kennedy has got to be one of the greatest voices nowadays! Cheers!!
Agreed 100%
Disturbed version of this song talks to me in a very deep way.
The lyrics of the song done this way really brings out the meaning of the words and the emotions those words create.
I'm in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I love this version of this song.. it gives me chills every time I listen.
Hello to Michigan 😊 it’s so powerful!
Magnificent voice!!!!! You feel it to the bone!!! My favorite rendition!!!!
Lyrics are, to me, very Poe-esque.
My favorite rendition ever!!!
I'm not a metal fan but definitely a fan when they sing this and Hold On To Memories and Reason To Fight
Yes agreed. Well said.
And thank you! :)
What an amazing range he has
this song and the way disturbed did it ,
Simon and Garfunkel sang this song as a warning to everyone. Disturbed's version is the lamentation that the warning was not heeded.
That is my take on it as well, though more like anger than lamentation to me.
I get chills everytime I hear him sing. He is amazing.
The entire 10k Fists album was great, had it on repeat for months when it came out.
@@amithemuffinman you're not wrong! Full of great music.
Man, Down With The Sickness always reminds me of Paul McDermott in the Doug Anthony Allstars doing "Mummy Dearest".
That is the song I was going to recommend.. Phil Collins “ Land of Confusion “ excellent cover of that one too.
P. S. I want to change my song suggestion for The Bass Gang from "Century" to "The Emperor's New Clothes", because it shows off their vocals better.
if i remember correctly down with the sickness was on the soundtrack for queen of damned movie correct me if im wrong please
@@nickgillingham5575 I had never seen that movie, or even heard of it, but I looked up the soundtrack on UA-cam and you are correct.
I think the the live Conan show is more impressive, because his emotions are more raw and he his showing exactly how he feels every moment.
A couple of other recs:
This might be a bit detailed, but it might make a really compelling dramatic reaction.
Do you know who Christina Grimmie is? If not, she was a young YT musical sensation and later a popular contestant on The Voice.
If you happen to not know anything about her, I would recommend doing the following together in one reaction, without research:
Titanium
ua-cam.com/video/yQg9wCR_xPw/v-deo.html
Wrecking Ball
ua-cam.com/video/RLM4PEFJOeU/v-deo.html
News
ua-cam.com/video/hKOe5iIg1cY/v-deo.html
If you do know the story, but not the music, either of those performances are great in different ways .
I concur
Yes. I listen to this more than 3 times a day. I love seeing the reactions.
Amazing rendition. I'd say that the live version on Conan is far more impactful and emotional, and an absolute must-watch, even if supposedly there is some auto-tuning on it. Definitely check that out. It's far better in my opinion than this video, due in part to seeing him actually perform it. Great reaction as always.
there was no auto tune , Draiman said that is a rumour and not true at all
@@bluejay9940 Right! He was actually sick when he went on Conan. He was not at his best and it was still absolutely incredible.
@@lauriwest435 he is an amazing vocalist! he sets a very high standard for himself
Wow! What an epic song - what fantastic music, what a haunting performance. - And: what a strong and peaceful 'weapon' that could be able to end any war on the spot.
My favorite song from Disturbed. The Apologetix version is the only one I loved better. It was called the sound of Sirens. It was about racism.
You speak with conviction and a very astute sense. Very refreshing!
EACH TIME A ROCK BAND DOES A COVER, THE RESULT IS A MASTERPIECE. AND IT ALWAYS OVERCOMES THE ORIGINAL VERSION, PERIOD!!! 🤘🏼🎶
Not always true. 5FDP did Blue on Black and it was nowhere as good as the original.
@@deadmeat5150butt WELL, I DIDN'T HEAR THAT SONG. AS FAR AS I KNOW, ROCK BANDS DON'T DISAPPOINT
I love this version and I love watching different channels reviewing it, they all react the same, it touches your soul
So powerfully done. I'm a 56 year old guy and it makes me teary eyed everytime I watch it. Just so powerful and emotional.
Steve from Omaha, Nebraska. Have seen Disturbed 7 times in concert and they get better each time I see them 🤘 In other songs in concert, his voice just pierces your soul. As you say...EPIC !!!
Great interpretation of the lyrics!! :D
I find it hard to think someone hasn't heard this and or their live "Conan (TV Appearance) before!! However, here you are and you have discovered one of the masterpieces of our time!! BRAVO FOR YOU!!!
Disturbed is a heavy metal band that catches EVERYONE by surprise, then elevates and owns a song (this song) 50+ years after it was written!! Anyone who hasn't been blown away by this isn't really listening! No matter what genre you like, this is superbly done and flawless! The best cover/song/video these past 7+ years! DISTURBED ~ WOW!!
