- In July 2021, Lou and I decided to completely overhaul how our life was going to unfold. Leaving our sailing dreams behind, we decided to embrace a life that we hoped was better suited to the things that make us happy. We still wanted to be surrounded by nature, but with more peace and quiet. More time for creativity. We hoped for ease of living that mixed adventure and comfort at the same time.
And now after moving across the world, getting a puppy, we're about to embark on what probably will be the biggest adventure of our lives - starting a family. At 14 weeks pregnant, the thought of having a little baby of our own is sinking in and I'm feeling more introspective than ever. This video is a little hodgepodge of a bunch of moments from this week - surfing, drawing, gardening, baking bread, and I hope you enjoy it.
Also, I feel like this little library journal might need to have some videos entirely dedicated to it. What do you think??? Any ideas for a name for the series? I'm thinking it could be something like the old travel journals, but instead it would be on a 3 or 4 week rotation connected to the books I check out library books. Please leave any ideas in the comments! I would so love to hear them!

If you say "shake" when Freya shakes off excess water, you can teach her to do it on command. Super helpful to be able to get them to shake after a rainstorm walk *before* walking in the house or store.

aw Dana! I slept like minimum 20 hours a day for the first trimester of both my pregnancies. Its the most normal of needs during that phase. The second time around, when I had a toddler, I set up our mattress on the ground, shut the door to our bedroom and just let my baby explore the room, crawl on top of my body, snuggle in for breast milk and her own nap, all while I passed in and out of sleep. At the time it felt impossible, and now its a really endearing memory of my baby parent phase of life. Seriously, I wish you guys all the best.

I'm a longtime fan of you and Lou's storytelling, and the mother of a 6 year old. I was so thrilled to learn that the two of you are expecting a baby, and wanted to recommend a memoir that I think you might love - I read it when my son was 3 and thought "I wish I had this when I was pregnant!" The book is "Homing Instincts: Early Motherhood on a Midwestern Farm" by Sarah Menkedick. I thought of you in particular, because it's a memoir of a world traveler reflecting on the experience of being pregnant and shifting her adventure-seeking inclinations toward more inward, introspective, and root-building energies.

This chapter of your lives reminds me of the good parts of my childhood, when we would make bread and sauerkraut and kombucha. Good memories that I sometimes have a hard time holding onto in light of all the bad that came later. You don't know me, or my story, but thank you for reminding me of those good chapters.

I had my baby girl 3 weeks ago, being a mom has been the most amazing transition! My first trimester I was more tired then I’ve ever been in my life, sleeping all the time.

loving these maui videos. you should really, really, really get to know the locals, learn from the people instead of from books, humbly release all of your mainland mentalities and habits. if hawaiians know you're there to learn and love, not to exploit and take, they will give you the shirts off their backs. if you isolate yourselves and think you'll figure out everything on your own, it won't be as rich and peaceful of an experience

Personally I think that doing both things are helpful. It also won't hurt to learn the history. Growing up in Hawaii I was taught about the Hawaiian history, culture, and belief/religious system. I also learned from Hawaiians and experienced the culture 1st hand. But that history that we learned in school was very important. In the mainland schoosl they are not taught about that. So I personally don't see anything negative about someone (even a local or Hawaiian) learning more via accredited books etc. Of course it is also vital that they learn about it through Hawaiians and not just by reading about it. I think it's smart to be well rounded and learn in more than one way or with more than one source. We also don't know who they interact with because they're probably going to respect privacy etc and not record everything.
I'll admit i was a but apprehensive when I saw that they moved to Maui but so far they seem to be respectful 🙏

Dana, you are positively glowing!!! So happy for you! I was EXACTLY the same--I could plop down & sleep anywhere those first few months!
Just give IN, Dana! That baby is telling you to rest and nap whenever you please. Also, to eat a little more and make sure your vitamins are in line. The first couple of trimesters can be rough .... your energy is fairly nonexistent much of the time and, although it doesn't sound like you suffered from being sick, nausea and just feeling lousy can be a consistent theme. Just enjoy the experience, give in to the sleepiness & relax. You won't probably have a lot of relaxation for a while after your baby comes. It's wonderful, but it's so tiring.
BTW, I could've been 7 1/2 months pregnant FOREVER! I felt great, I could eat whatever I wanted, I looked pregnant instead of just fat and people were super nice to me ... people love a pregnant woman. Enjoy.

Awe! The belly shot in your bikini was adorable. I wanted to jump through the screen & give you a big hug ☺️ I am currently pregnant (around the same weeks as you are) with baby #2. Motherhood is a whirlwind & I wouldn’t change it for a thing. It’s also incredible seeing your partner/spouse turn into the best father to your children. A year from now you both will not be able to imagine your lives without your baby. It’s the best change we’ve ever been through 💗💗💗

So normal to be sleepy in the first trimester! I am not a napper but I slept my way through all 3 of my first trimesters. It takes so much energy to set up that baby making business in our bodies! So sleepy.
Sweet a baby changes your life and your thought process. Take each day one at a time. Don't make any changes until your baby and husband are ready for something new. This is a blessing, love each other and the new addition to your family 👪 🥰🥰. Both mothers love you more and as you grow. 🙏🥰🥰💐

Sheesh, I can't believe how FAST Freja is growing!!! What a L💗VE❣ I was surprised you didn't borrow from the library, or maybe you already have it, the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting". I found it immensely helpful, and even used the companion journal to keep myself in check nutritionally & make sure I wasn't only giving in to maternity cravings but was getting all the right balance of nutrients for my 1st born (23 years ago! 😉)! My NP labeled me a "model for maternity weight gain" the week before my delivery, so I highly recommend both books! ...and Lou's BREAD?? My mouth is literally watering!!! 🤤 Love y'all!! 🥰
