    Oh Dana. It IS a big deal. Please don't ever think you need to minimize it. It is never ok for a person to demand anything of our bodies. Neither stranger nor friend. Nor even partner/spouse. And Lou, I could hear in your narration that you carry guilt over being away and you have no need to do that either. Is Dana lucky as hell to have you? Yes. I can tell you'd do anything at all to protect her, as it should be, but we can't tether ourselves to our partner's side and stop finding the beauty in the world on our own. And you can't stop finding your own adventures from time to time.

    Please do not forget to teach Freya how to stay alone without being stressed. This best starts very early by encouraging her to not follow you around in the house if you tell her to stay so that she learns to stay relaxed when you are out of sight for a minute or two. I know you read all the books, but especially with a puppy I feel like I want to be around it all the freaking time so I tend to forget/delay teaching staying alone

      Thank you, Laura... we hadn't actually shared this in a video before, we decided we didn't want to include it back then. Partially because it takes a while to emotionally process, and because we like our videos being more of a positive creative output and don't always share everything... But since it was an important part of the decision to get a German shepherd as our first dog, and since time has past, I was ok with sharing it now. Thanks for your kind words, they mean a lot! Wise words from Lou regarding rescue dogs. We got 10-year-old mini schnauzer Beasley from a shelter. Freya is beautiful. I'm grateful to hear, though, that you are aware of the priceless value of adopting dogs and puppies from local shelters and rescues. I've been in dog rescue for years and years, and sadly our local shelter is filled to overflowing now, with soooo many dogs and puppies in need of loving homes. Rescue dogs come from all walks of life, and often find themselves at shelters due to absolutely no fault of their own, and often they are better behaved than my own dogs. And, pure bred dogs find themselves at shelters all the time too, often as breeder surrenders, in fact there are breed specific rescues in most states and for most breeds of dogs that can work with people one on one to find a good match. Though you decided to buy Freya from a breeder, I thank you for you comments on adoption, and for spreading the word about the importance of adoption/rescue. It will be a joy to see a rescue dog or puppy in your family one day as a wonderful brother or sister to Freya.

    • @HPB1776
      @HPB1776 3 роки тому +1

      I love this comment. I was so hoping that Freya was a rescue dog. Dog adoption is so important. I adopted a 9 month old GSD sized street dog from Spain who was thrown into a pool to drown and went to the pound. He is such a wonderful boy. He brings joy and happiness to the family and has taught my children so much. It has been so rewarding to adopt and give him a second chance at life. It makes my heart swell everyday. Puppies are of course v cute but I hate the idea of breeding being promoted when so many animals who've been let down are in need of homes. Thank you so much for your work with rescue animals. 🙏

      @@HPB1776 Your story is so touching. I'm so sorry your GSD went through such suffering before you found him, but I'm so grateful for people like you who save dogs in desperate need of tender loving care. There is no doubt you dog knows you rescued him, and I'm sure he is devoted to you and your family with all his heart and soul. Thank you for your kind words, but without adopters like you rescuers wouldn't be able to continue to rescue more and more dogs. It takes a village, and you are the village. Namaste.

I hope you (and Lou) have been able to get some professional insight on healing your souls from the trauma that event caused you both. My best dog advice...
    Play with Freya’s ears and paws frequently so that she becomes accustomed to the feel.
    From the very beginning, handle her food with your hands first to let her know that just because you handle her food that she does not need to become defensive about it.
    No table scraps, so she never learns to beg at the table.
    You eat first.

    I work in vet med and I’ll tell you - Freja or Freya is a really common German Shepherd name😂 Also I’m sure you’ve done your research on their hips (hence the ramp) but please don’t get all of your information from the internet. Make an appointment with a vet and ask your questions (for a large breed please don’t feed grain free food-look up FDA statement about grain free foods and dilated cardiomyopathy and have a convo with a vet). Also spaying dogs before their first heat cycle (at around 6 months old) DECREASES their risk of mammary cancer (and other hormone related cancers) by roughly 90%. However, large breed dogs sterilized later in life (12-16 months old) decreases their risk of rupturing their cruciate ligament (ACL in people.) German Shepherds already have a shorter lifespan due to their size so please ask your vet what they recommend to keep her healthy, not just the internet/trainer/pet food stores. Congrats on the new pup!

      Also I would absolutely recommend getting pet insurance while she’s young and has no preexisting conditions (like hip dysplasia).

    • @aymeetheginger
      @aymeetheginger 3 роки тому +13

      Ok last thing - tired dogs learn better so having her play and get energy out before you start working with her will help with training. Also you can use her normal food as training rewards (like measure it out in the morning before feeding her and take from her daily allowance) so you’re not giving her too many calories. When she’s this small it’s less important but after she’s grown keeping her lean will be the best thing for her hips.

      Also a small animal vet here. Can confirm all above facts, including the commonality of the name Freja for a GSD! One more thing: PLEASE start messing with her toes, nails and ears while using positive reinforcement to get her used to nail trims and ear cleanings. This will make keeping her healthy A LOT easier in the future! And will make your vet's job easier as well :)

      I can attest to the easy tearing of the ACL on GSDs. My sweet Lizzy tore hers chasing a squirrel. Luckily we live near enough to UC Davis that has an excellent (and way less expensive) veterinary teaching hospital. They fixed her ACL perfectly and she had many more good years. Unfortunately they warned us that it would be easier for her to tear the ACL on her other leg. This did happen a few years later and then her hips began to fail. Giving her prescribed meds helped. I still miss my Lizzy girl so much💕🐾🐕‍🦺🌈

    My Step Dad taught his German shepherd to bark ("speak") and be quiet ("quiet") on command. It helped with stopping him being too noisy for neighbours, but also helpful if you are in an intimidating situation to be able to get him to bark. But he was already quite vocal, if Freja is quiet it might be harder to teach her haha.

    OMG I love your puppy! I was going to say the same thing as Ashley Bautista: I really like the way you prepare for everything reading books and looking for information. And Dana, it was a really big deal - it has to be shouted not minimized. Love from Brazil 🇧🇷

    #1: NEVER get a dog because you want him to look "intimidating" for "protection".
    #2: NEVER buy from a breeder. Its so disappointing they bought from a breeder. Always adopt. There are puppies in shelters, too. Pure-breds as well. I've fostered dogs and puppies and it breaks my hearts to think people still pad the pockets of breeders rather than save a life. ALL dogs deserve good homes, whether they are in a shelters or being pumped out by breeders. However, why add to the problem? Why not adopt? So unfortunate for all the puppies being killed today in shelters because people want to buy the "perfect" dog from a breeder 😪

    One of my first thoughts was 'we all need a German shepherd' and that's extremely sad to me. What happened should have come as a surprise but like myself too many women watching this will have known how the story unfolded before you even explained what had happened. This is making me really really sad. Thank you for explaining the reasoning as to why you have decided for the kind of dog you have adopted into your family. 💛

    As an owner of a GSD myself all I can say is these are the most loyal and trustful furry friend. Props to getting a female GSD, they're much more protective of their humans than of their space unlike males. All I can say is do the front end work! Set up a system that works for you and your pup to learn, and stick to it!. Once you teach them how to learn from you, your pup will be set for life to learn anything new you want them to. Happy dog life!

      and thank you Lou for the reminder to all that not all dogs are family dogs! Some breeds of dog take A LOT of work and patience to train and condition them to be "good" dogs. It hurts my heart to see dogs turned over after 8-16months from owners who didn't realize the work they are, got frustrated and surrendered the dog. And often these dropped dogs are "bad" dogs and reinforce their stereotypes of being vicious when really they were given up on. I wish you all the puppy kisses!

    I have had the same thing happen to me, in broad daylight when I was a hostess at a restaurant. I was 15. I was alone with a man, walking him to a nice table when the interaction changed in a minute. I now have a 100lb black lab that is my shadow. I have never felt safer. I am so sorry that happened, but bless your new puppy. I hope she is happy and makes you as safe as you can possibly be.

    Freya is stunning guys. Yes having a puppy is mega hard work unless you have time to sit and spend time training, giving them exercise. Yes, a GSD will protect you to the hilt if she needs to and since she had her since being little will love you for ever. The trainer seems to have done an amazing job with the crate as well for you, having a crate makes it so much easier. I know a lot of people don't like crates but a great safe place for Freya when she wants to chill(Which will be never until maybe 1)

    Lou, I like how you explained your reasoning for getting a working line dog. I didn't realize there was such a thing as working line dogs so thank you for the education! I guess I thought those kinds of dogs (airport and military K9s) came from GS rescues. I appreciate all the information you guys provide!

    Congratulations on your new slice of heaven! Beautiful puppy and beautiful parents!
    The most impactful video of yours I’ve ever watched and that left a deep print in my heart is the one with Alphie. It was so heartwarming to see you get a tattoo of a pine cone in Alphie’s memory. That is the second time I cried watching your videos. I can’t help thinking about Alphie; how much he must have missed you when you were no longer there and how there was no way to explain to him where you had gone. Is there any way at all you might be able to bring him “home”? You are such huge hearted people. I believe Alphie recognized that in you both. He would be in such good and well deserved care. Unexpectedly, I am shedding a few tears as I write this. I too am a dog lover and have some wonderful stories. Watching Alphie interact and bond with you both and especially with Dana was deeply touching. I haven’t stopped wondering about him.

    Adopt not shop! As a volunteer for years in animal sanctuaries, I have seen so many dogs that die alone there because no one gave them attention. I am sorry Lou, you didn't persuade me about your reasons. Apart from the fact that almost everything you said (apart from s&r) can be accomplished by many medium to big-sized dogs, you are also trying to justify that your reasons are valid to shop a dog. In my opinion, this was a black day on your journey. Never shop a dog. Being vegan and buying from someone that uses animals to make money is kinda weird. There are so many sanctuaries that would send you for free a rescued dog even if it was overseas. I am disappointed. A dog would protect their 'owner' no matter if they are shepherds, bulldogs, Great Danes, or Labradors. PS: As a European white guy I am really sorry about what happened to you Dena. These are kinds of stuff that makes us hate our sex.
