to those who never had Vietnamese rolls, the peanut sauce is for the cold one, and for the fried one is the vinegar with fish sauce and chili.

Usually, Banh Xeo is eaten by wrapping a bit of it in lettuce and dipping it into the nuoc mam (the fish sauce with the vinegar and chilis). That place a bit "fancy" for viet food. Should find a more casual place as I feel they portray our type of homestyle cooking viet food better!

    OUUU VIET FOODDD
So, just a breakdown on the foods Eric has shown us today.
1:10 Goi Cuon/Spring Rolls - It's a finger food that you would dip either in the fish sauce or peanut sauce
1:44 Banh Uoc/Steamed Rice Rolls - You eat it with the side vegs and smother it with fish sauce
1:57 Cha Gio/Eggrolls - This type are pretty rare in some Viet places, it's wrapped in rice paper (my fav) rather than the regular flour wrappers.
3:16 Banh Xeo/Viet Tumeric Crepe(Pancake) - To make it easier, I usually cut it into sections(like a quesadilla) and take each section and wrap it with a lettuce, along with herbs, then dip it into fish sauce.
5:21 Soft Shell Crab - Nothing really Viet about it. Lol But the salt pepper is actually a "sauce" where you squeeze lemon juice in it. My ratio to s.p. to lemon/lime is 0.5:1.
    6:37 Banh Mi/Sandwhich - It's a sandwich. Eat it however you'd like.
8:41 Avocado Salad - Uhhhh It's just a hype? LOL Viets don't have that as their dish, probably just a thing they started around the countries.
    10:06 Bun Xao/Noodle - Just thin, bouncy clear noodles that's been stir-fry.

There is a large Vietnamese community in Arkansas from refugees from the Vietnam War and as a result some very good Vietnamese restaurants in the Little Rock area. Some of these places also had French dishes (or really good French bread) from the chefs being trained well in French cooking from when Vietnam was a French colony and called French Indochina. I am glad the USA accommodated these refugees from that long, tragic war.

Hi Mr.Erik, it’t quite late to comment on your video but as a Vietnamese, i’m very appreciate your love with out cuisine. But i want to inform you the difference between Spring roll and Summer roll in Vietnam. The roll that is fried is called Spring Roll, and the one that is rolled in the wet rice paper cake is called Summer Roll. We usually dip the Summer Roll in the Sauce made by Peanut butter, and the Spring roll is served with fish sauce. That the only thing that i want to tell you thou it’s quite late now in Viet Nam. Love your videos ❤️

Just the minor recommendation. The soft shell crab is served with lemon, salt and pepper. The purpose is to make the sauce to dip the crab. All you need to do is put the lemon into the salt and pepper, mix it up and done. When you eat, you take the crab deep a little into that sauce you make. It's not like what you eat in the video. I'm not criticizing you, I just want to help you and other people to eat them the right way. Nice video, hope to see more from you. Cheers!

Banh Xeo is a turmeric seasoned crepe. You take sections of it and create a lettuce wrap with the herbs and lettuce then dip into the tangy sauce. Same with the appetizer plate you had with the assorted rolls. Typically the fresh roll, Goi Cuon, is served with that peanut sauce and the other two rolls, the deep fried one (which I don't know the name of) and the soft noodle roll known as Banh Cuon, is eaten with the tangy fish sauce. They are usually served with greens to create wraps just like the banh xeo.

  • @nguyenlan3223
    @nguyenlan3223 7 років тому

Although Banh xeo is yellow, it is not made from egg. The yellow color comes from a type of powder that belongs to a plant (we Vietnamese call it nghệ). So don't be fool easily by the yellowish color

The traditional way to eat Banh Xeo is to get a big piece of lettuce and put some of the banh xeo in the middle. Wrap that up and dip that in the fish sauce. I just had some last night lol and it’s the best !

Slowly catching up to your episodes from #1!
Next time you are in Cali, go back to Litttle Saigon indoor market. In the middle section there is a street food stall. They sell authentic viet street food. LOTS to choose from! Please try balut, it is fresh duck eggs. And the rice-paper and mango salad!

I know you're not familiar with Vietnamese cuisine which is okay to make mistakes xD just a tip that the lime was supposed to be put into the pepper and salt, then you mix it up. Then you can dip that crab into the sauce you just made :)

I'm Viet and I LOVE our food. (I love other foods, too) We like to balance many different flavors into our dishes. Simple but full of flavors. Fresh ingredients are a must. This is due to the fact that most Viet don't have fridges (or big ones) so they go to market up to three times a day to get fresh ingredients for each meal. The food is always refreshing or comforting and we make use of whatever ingredients we can get a hold of.
Your pronunciation of Banh Xeo was great!

Peanut sauce is used for the spring rolls. It's one of the standards. (I prefer Nuoc Mam). I believe they might have adjusted a little for the Japanese public, probably? But yes, improve the Banh Mi for sure. More herbs. More meat!

Don't go to a fancy restaurant to eat Vietnamese food. If you want authentic Vietnamese food, you'll have to go to the more casual ones with plastic chairs or the vendors from the streets. Their foods are way better than the ones in the fancy restaurants. Those restaurants would rip you off.

That sandwich looks a little limp Lol When you get back to L.A. try a real one in the 626 area.

These are areas in Los Angles. The 626 is known for its high population of Viets. I am not too sure about 714, I don't live in LA. ^^

Kimbo Slice correct, 626 covers Alhambra which has a large Asian population(don't if there are more viets, or Koreans, or Chinese) but I don't know about 714.

City of Westminster in the 714 is officially known as "Little Saigon" so yes, there's some really good Vietnamese food to be eaten there. Little Saigon also kinda runs over into the neighboring city of Garden Grove. I'm sure Eric knows the area, I think he grew up in neighboring HB.
