Man there are few things more tasty and refreshing than biting into a freshly made "Banh Mi"! That beautiful crusty french bread, all the fresh crunchy veggies, the tasty but polarizing cilantro (I couldn't imagine a "Banh mi", or any Vietnamese food really, without it!), the unique sauces and just so many different varieties of meats to try! Personally, I'm partial to the Roast Pork Banh Mi , well that or the OG original style "Banh Mi" with pate and cuts of a couple different luncheon meat! (The original bahn mi has lasted this long for a reason, while it may not be as fancy or as expensive as some of the other options, it's just f'n amazing and something everyone should try at least once!) Oh, if you were wondering why the "ham" looked/tasted different was because it wasn't actually "ham", or at least ham as we know it. It was actually a type of Pork luncheon meat, kind of a off-label cheaper SPAM. It's extremely popular in traditional Banh mi's because they are cheap and since you don't need to cook it, super easy and fast to prepare it. Plus, they're actually tasty when used right and once you get used to it! It's actually really amazing and interesting all the different cultures and cuisines that came together to create such a unique dish that eventually became one of Vietnam's most famous and well known foods!
These were my fast food favorites in college. We had a banh mi place nearby that had a buy 2 get 1 free. The amount of carbs, fat and sodium in this stuff is enough for 2 meals. Add a Vietnamese coffee and I was able to go from 8am to 10pm with school and work.
Really like Vietnamese bahn mi beef sandwiches, pho noodle soup, and stir-fried chicken lemongrass especially. So much of Vietnamese cuisine is so good.
The "ham" isn't the same ham you would have in America or western countries. In Canada I've heard it called Vienamese sausage, or Cha lua. It's a lot softer than normal ham or sausage, and has a slight fish sauce taste. The texture is a bit like tapioca balls, or jello in terms of the "springiness". I think this is caused by potato starch being added. If you were expecting normal ham I could see it being off putting, especially if you don't like the pate, but personally it's my favourite one because it's very distinct from "normal" sandwiches you get here.
it's to the point where I can't watch one of these videos and not be eating something while watching, lol. they just make me hungry, lol. those sub rolls sounded wonderfully crunchy - nothing beats a good sub-roll.
I believe the "ham" sandwich you had was made with Vietamese sausage. I love banh mi sandwiches, at least those I've been able to get in my area. Love the mix of textures and flavors! Thanks for sharing.
I've never heard of Bahn mi sandwiches before, but they looked epic. I always want to go out and buy something very similar to eat after watching these videos, keep up the good work
How good is Banh Mi! We see lucky to have so many good Banh Mi stores Australia. I just adore the crunchy (soft inside) bun and fresh chilli. Thank God for the French influence in Vietnam. Such beautiful bread
@@EmeraldHill-vo1cs you aren’t looking for them then because I live in Melbourne too and I’m aware of quite a few banh mi stores. I’m sure there’s also some located in the city too. If you’re near Footscray there’s quite a few there, or even in Springvale. Also the big shopping centres should at least have a banh mi store.
I have banh mi on my food bucket list. There is not any vietnamese restaurants near me but there is one about 45 minute from me. There are great reviews for their menu. You have inspired me to plan a girls day out with my daughter, who is also very food brave!
Eric I love how you transitioned to eating in new areas but the OG videos where you would find a random area to eat will forever be gold , not saying the new style isn't good because it is #FoodSurfers 🏄♂️🤙🏻❤️
The vegetarian sandwich looked the most appetising to me. There were so many different veg in what looked like a mayo dressing. Like you said, the veg on the other sandwiches seemed very repetitive. Great video. :)
You would think that living in a large college town you would have plenty of Vietnamese food joints but sadly, this is a Banh Mi Desert. I love that crispy French Bread with all the veggies and meat but it's been way too long since I've had one. Thanks for sharing your lunch with us.
I looked up banh mi sandwiches near me and found a Vietnamese restaurant that makes them. I was shocked to see that a banh mi sandwich is $10.95 in New Jersey. A banh mi sandwich is a bargain at $5 in Japan
I love me some banh mi! It's such a unique sandwich style and the flavours are very complex, definitely an eye-opener for people used to western-style sandwiches. Bahn mi used to be such amazing value when it comes to taste/quantity/price. For a couple of bucks, you could get a big sandwich that was beyond tasty. Unfortunately, as it became more and popular, and along with greedflation, those days are long gone.
I agree uncaring bear, we had several banh mi shops in my state that served huge sandwiches that were so inexpensive but sadly they have increased in price along with decrease in size ☹️ same with the pho shops too
Ooh I have a little Vietnamese place only 10 min from where I live and oh i love their spring rolls and egg rolls and that dip or dressing is so good when you pour it in the egg roll after taking the first bite. Now was that cilantro on those sandwiches because I am one of those strange people who don't like that cilantro . Love your videos!
The crunch of those sandwiches was making me salivate. They looked delicious. The pigeons were so patient. They were waiting for anything that you might drop. Lol. How's your hand? ❤️😊✋
Eric raises a good point. The “salad” portion isn’t just filler; it’s what elevates the sandwich. The sandwich shops should probably experiment with using different kinds of pickled vegetables and herbs to give the sandwich more variety.
They looked good and you know me and how much I do love my fish but I couldn't get around the bun it just looks too hard every time I see one. At least too hard for me to eat one. However, the egg rolls looked wonderful!
We have a place nearby with amazing pork belly Bánh mì. Partner it with a ice cold Vietnamese coffee and you're in heaven. What you called ham pate looks like what we call the mystery sausage. LOL
Searching on Google to see if there is a Vietnam type sandwich place near me!!😂 The veggie option looked so yummy!! That bread had a crunch when you got some!!🤤🤤
There's a restaurant up here in Folsom, CA that sells the best Banh Mi sandwiches, but unfortunately we are leaving CA for Oregon tomorrow and watching you eat these delicious looking sandwiches is making me sad. Guess I know what I'll be having for lunch one last time before we leave.
Another great video Eric, the sandwiches look delicious. 😋😋 I don't think they are available in Canada, like most of what you eat in Japan. Watching from Niagara Falls today. Keep up the great work!! 👌🍁
Lots of Vietnamese resturants, coffee shops, bakeries, etc here in Canada. Just write ‘Vietnamese food places near me serving Banh Mi’ and I’m sure you’ll have numerous options available. Now a days it’s just as popular as American Chinese food.

The pigeons are so polite in Japan, here in Germany they would be all over you at the first sight of crumbs. 🕊
@@gregoryadkins2213 Be nice...
So true in Alabama it would gulls and pigeons
the pigeons in Australia are the size of a koala and if you are eating a fish and chips they will peck your eye out for a feed.
In New Jersey the sea gulls are the same way! They don’t care they’ll eat all your food!
I'm a pigeon

The bread sounds perfect
The Vietnamese-style Baguette utilizes a mixture of Wheat flour and Rice flour. It is the Rice flour that results in the extra crunchy crust.
Wow the bread looks soo crispy but soft at same time. Wow

Yep! I had leftovers for a few days ✔💯🏄
Love the crunch of the bread. Wide variety, never a dull meal.
Love me the lemon grass in the sandwiches takes it to another level for me
Berg. I love the crunch and the flavor that the celantro adds.

A Deli Sammich around here is an easy $10.00 or more . You have to love that the prices are quite reasonable in Japan compared to other countries.
