Prices generally don't ever go down ... they go up. That said, there have been significant increases in prices since the Covid pandemic passed. Was is due to logistics factors? Possibly, however, they should have come back down if so.

Yes prices have risen ,I think that Aldi is slightly cheaper. than Lidl ,they will say that things are cheaper but that's not so, most everything has gone up by more than 20%,.Potatoes are a rip off no matter what the farmer says.

Interesting video! Just came back from Lidl here in Amsterdam. I am jealous of your prices for Irish butter. We pay almost €3 for 250 gram here. Our favorite. Much better than Dutch butter 😅 And love all the turkeys and even geese 😍 Not over here. We have the same leg of parma ham here but they are €80 and we have to order them. Chocolate and wine are cheaper here... staples in my household 😅 Great that you have the to good to go app. We should all strive to waste as less food as possible.

Lidl, one of my favourite stores when we visit our wonderful family. Mom is very good with her pricing and always looking for specials. Today we were in the OK Grocer, and butter was on a special for R60, compared to the normal price of over R90. When it comes to wine, you can get a good bottle for under R60. I've just ordered 6 bottles of Unbelievable wine, that's what it is called, for R39 a bottle. Overall, I think we in South Africa are a lot cheaper, but prices have increased quite a bit. So you are not alone. But from experience, your stores have good quality food. Woolworths here, is similar in quality. Nice to catch up with you again 🥰🇿🇦

You get a lot less from restaurants/coffee shops. Aldi has been a real game changer when it comes to saving money.

It is virtually impossible to find a house to rent in any area where jobs are available. That is why many young Irish people leave for other countries. Do some research on the Internet and you will find out more about the crazy situation regarding lack of affordable housing in Ireland.

I ‘stagger’ my shopping generally between Lidl and Dunnes Stores depending on what I need to buy and that juggling has offset some of the pain-though I’m not buying for a family. However I’ve just returned from some time in Italy and nearly had a heart attack there when I saw the price of things. From being cheaper-in general-than Ireland a few years ago, now most things are on a par with us (except for wine-€1.90 for a litre in a tetra pack and it was very nice). Even a cup of coffee cost €5! And a cup of hot water with a teabag on the side cost €5 too! I think we’re all suffering!

    • @impromptuimmigrants

Great credit to you and James and the kids. It's not easy even for those of us with some level of support around us but you had to dig even deeper. I think in time, when you look back, you'll miss those 'hard' years. I do. Reminds me (in parts) of Neil Sedaka's song "I miss the hungry years". Ypu usually give a summary of what the budget did or didn't do for you. Might be helpful to others thinking of coming to Ireland. Did they extend the free school books? Was there something about breakfast and/or lunch in school? I'm gone past that. Always seem to miss out. I see some comments about immigrants. I welcome all immigrants. The only reason anyone would come to Ireland is to try, as you are doing, to set out to have a better life. I only wish we could do better in terms of housing everybody, immigrants & locals. I would only ask one thing of them, without losing your own culture or identity, try an assimilate into Irish society. Up to us Irish to try and make that as easy as possible. Keep up the great content. You do have a talent. You should contact RTE. Maybe you can become a correspondent for the southeast or become a presenter for Nationwide. I'm serious. What have you to lose?

What a beautiful video & narration. We too have been here 5 years. Me as "Returning Irish" & my hubby as a South African who had never even visited Ireland before we moved across. His journey from the vastly unfamiliar to now, where he also feels that Ireland is his home is much like yours. The good days, the bad days. Me showing him the beauty of the country. Teaching him the subtle intricacies of Irish culture. Buying our dream property, deep in the countryside. All leading to the point where he refers to Ireland as Home. I'm so happy that you love this country as much as we do. 💕

Wow, just wow. You are so talented, that was a very beautiful video. So well narrated and put together. I'm so happy that you and your lovely family are still here. There was a few times over the last few years that I thought that you guys might have enough of the horrible weather and leave for sunnier climes. But, you have persevered. For what its worth, we are very lucky to have you and your family here. We need the diversity and talent that you guys bring. We are fortunate that in 2024, Ireland is a land of opportunity. It hasn't always been like that (thanks England) but the home grown talent is here and with a sprinkling of South African magic we will all prosper. Your sacrifices will be worth it, believe me. Your children will grow up safe, rich in the culture, tradition and history of Ireland while reminded of their amazing African heritage by you guys. I mean this in the nicest possible way, but your skills should be recognised and used in the media industry. You have a gift.
