We dip our toes into the shallow "Columbo" literary pool again to break down the one and only "Columbo" Christmas special! The first in a series of six tie-in novels, the creatively-titled "Columbo" - a.k.a. "A Christmas Killing" - is a mediocre tale of holiday mystery and intrigue. The disdain for this episode comes from the contradiction that familiarity breeds contempt. It is said that the most scientifically beautiful face is also the most average. Average is a insult sometimes, cliche is seen as bad. But when it's pulled off well, it's perfect. All other columbo episodes revolve around this one, coming before and coming after, but this one is quintessential.

    There's one more bit of recycling: in Jess's office, there is a blue book cover in a picture frame hanging on the wall; the book is titled "Hot Fire", which also appears prominently in "Throw Momma From The Train" as the novel written by Kate Mulgrew's character in the film.

    Flaws and all, this episode felt like a "finale" to the approach the ABC series had with Columbo. The clues provide a genuine puzzle for Columbo to solve, so it's a shame the film falls back on familiar cat-and-mouse games.

    I didn't hate this one. Fandoms can be extremely finicky too, just look at Star Wars fans. This is also more in line with what Columbo would be realistically doing- someone of his rank(of which he dodged promotions for decades) should be commanding a squadron, not out doing his own beat cop detective work(in addition to his general refusal to carry a gun or without a partner... but Columbo usually ditches a lot of real procedure for the sake of story. Carrying evidence in a paper bag with his lunch? That would get thrown out of court!). Yes, this is the only living relative of his we see directly(a photo of a sister-in-law showed up in "Rest In Peace, Mrs. Columbo"), I don't think it contradicts earlier statements as he did mention having several siblings at one point, in addition to the fan theory he's lying about his family to the suspects. That said it focused a bit too little on Rudy & shooting him was an unusual end, aside from trying to adapt this & "Undercover" to the Columbo canon had issues. Personally my biggest disappointment is "Rest In Peace, Mrs. Columbo", as they set it up to be the wife of a past arrest getting revenge but made it some off-screen adventure. The basic setup even sounds like it could be reworked to be the wife from "The Bye-Bye Sky-High IQ Murder Case" so the whole story was a missed opportunity to be a proper sequel. Maybe they had rights issues due to switching networks? It's not a bad story on its own(and I'd rank the casting of Vincent Price as a barely-there cosmetic company president to be equally disappointing... COME ON!) it just set up a lot that could have been used better. Of note is photographer Alex Varick, played by Daniel Davis- he appeared on Star Trek TNG 2 times as the holodeck Moriarty & a regular on The Nanny as smart-mouth butler Niles. (and good for putting in the clip from The Thing so you don't have to deal with 40+ comments referencing it)

    • @EchoesOfColumbo
      @EchoesOfColumbo 5 місяців тому

      The photographer was Moriarty! I love TNG and I did not realize that was him. It’s a real challenge to select my own “worst” (or least favorite) episode… “Old-Fashioned Murder” has to be one of the all-time stinkers, but I feel that the more I watch any of them, the better they seem. Just a testament to how entertaining the show is, even the WORST have some redeeming qualities.

      @@EchoesOfColumbo That one had a "frame the girl" scenario tacked on because it felt like it was running too short, with the revelation that the killer had once killed prior leading to something interesting, then just being used as a lame setup at the end to get her to confess despite Columbo having more than enough evidence. Plus the whole hairstylist going on a rant scene just as an excuse to give Peter Falk a weird haircut for a sight gag.

    I can understand her getting more prominent roles later on- Levinson & Link were long gone by then with only a few old scripts of theirs being used(in fact Murder:She Wrote only saw them for the first season due to Levinson's death causing Link to leave the show). Falk was more or less in charge. Not really a bad thing, he WAS Columbo(McGoohan had been offered the role after season 7 & refused, saying it was Falk's role). The show had goofy moments then, but it had its fair share of those back in the day too. Geraldine & Cathleen aren't splayed sympathetic but does it matter? Geraldine is involved in mob business & doesn't care about how it might affect others. Cathleen hates her husband(played to the point that the audience does too) & really sees no problem taking an innocent life just to get rid of him. Not all TV murderers have to be sympathetic as not all real murderers are. Trish is clearly selfish & an opportunist. On a real world note, Shera was there with him until the end. Catherine Falk, daughter from his first marriage, refused to associate with him but tried to gain control of his estate after he passed. She failed. And just thinking out loud... Shera... She-Ra... I wonder if she was maybe an inspiration for that character in name & even appearance? Not that Mattel has ever said it but it'd be a real concidence... The full version of "Closer" was also released at some point. Strange we get that but several full versions of Metalocalypse songs are still in a vault, huh.

      @@EchoesOfColumbo I wish I never saw that one video on UA-cam of an angry fan invading their privacy, confronting them in a public place with accusations she only knew from tabloids; I felt bad for both of them.

    “He’s playing different notes without using the valves.” This may shock you, but a tuba can in fact play more than eight (2^3) notes.

      Oh yes, there are certainly different octaves, sharps, flats, etc that are all played with the same finger position - I’m just skeptical that the notes he “plays” in that moment are any of those. I’m not a tuba player though (trumpet is my instrument), so I could be wrong!

    Yes! All three Cassidy episodes are excellent. Now You See Him being my favourite of the three. There's a deeper level of darkness and seriousness in that one, with his character being an ex-nazi. Despite the fun and playful nature of the episode (and it IS a really fun episode) those parts make an interesting contrast against the dark, socio-political undertones. It just works! All of it. The acting, writing...wonderful.

      That’s my favorite Cassidy as well! It’s interesting that Santini seems to be liked and respected by everyone at the Cabaret (except Jerome, who knows his secret). I wonder how they all would have reacted when his true identity was revealed.
