  • "Make Me a Perfect Murder" finds Lieutenant Columbo SO engrossed by the case that he takes a few moments to fiddle with the test patterns in a TV studio. Is this another example of the "padding" we sometimes find in the ninety-minute episodes? Or are there additional layers to this 2-D special effects extravaganza?

Always love when you pick up on subtle visual references, like the one test pattern mimicking the carousel. Damn that beautiful brain of yours!

Columbo does seem to be happy to introduce fluffy scenes that aren't specifically related to forwarding the plot. I've always found that interesting.

Ironically, Freestone is the only one among who Columbo has spoken with who reveals the correct name for the changeover flash - a "Cue Blip"

The scene itself seems to counter the notion that he was always a genius in the classic era & a childish buffoon in the later episodes. But I'm more bothered by the whole opening scene- seeing him ignore his police radio, ignore the police cars around him & play with his rear view mirror only to hit a police car because of it. He gets a neck collar that doesn't much contribute to the story otherwise, then the chiropractor scene. In reality he'd probably have been under severe disciplinary action... but I also feel "Double Shock" is his worst moment, just driving the poor caretaker crazy through incompetence. You can sort of tell where Falk was in charge of the writing, this is how he saw the character. He was more or less in control in the revival seasons.

At least the ABC iteration of Columbo disposed of the 'controversy' by making every telefilm uniformly around 90 minutes (2 hrs on the original broadcast).
I am for the record not familiar with the backstory regarding the '70 vs 90' runtime on the NBC version. At any rate, some of my all-time personal faves of the 'Classic Columbo' (padding schmadding) are of the 90-minute variety, such as this one and Candidate for Crime.

Some people like to critique the “longer” episodes, and some certainly have slow spots - but when done right, even the longest Columbo can be as good as a feature film. Gives the writers more time to develop plot and flesh out characters.
