- At last! An episode that has a legitimate case for being the BEST that "Columbo" has to offer. Featuring one of Falk's most engaging performances, the best-acted guest villain, fantastic supporting players, and some of the show's top creative talent - WHY is this one so neglected in rankings of the series's top episodes? We delve into all that and more in a grand celebration of "Etude in Black."

Etude Columbo first episode ever seen
Got me into it.
This was one of the very first eps I saw too! Never forgot how engaging it was even to a youngster.
I believe one of the most important scenes of Columbo is in this episode where he's talking about the girl how lovely she is how much she has to live for and how he's suspicious of anything that appears to be suicide he doesn't understand why anybody would kill themselves.
I agree. I’m an obsessed fanatic of this gemlike show, and THIS is my favourite episode. The showdown scene - I have watched it over and over.
It’s a a just-about-perfect episode!
Love Columbo! Great episode!!
🤔 Étude in Black...
This is one of my personal faves among the widely acclaimed 'Classic Columbo' telefilms, along with Make Me a Perfect Murder, Candidate for Crime, and Ransom for a Dead Man. 👍
“Make Me” is one of my personal faves as well!
One of my favorite Columbo episodes.
It’s gotta be on the Mt. Rushmore of Columbos, right??
@@EchoesOfColumbo Absolutely !!!
I think this episode's strength is in how it uses time effectively- the attempt at a frame job on the other guy isn't just filler, unlike some episodes that would have found a way to stretch it. The nosy, obnoxious girl is actually useful there too. The dog moments aren't just shoved in to be there & they don't take up a lot of time...
Speaking of Dog, Louie Zong has a Columbo fan song on his channel dedicated to Dog.
...Though I do wonder how Dog was still alive in the 90s episodes? He'd be in his 20s by then but seems spry even in the later episodes.
My dream is to do a comprehensive “Dog” video (I’ll have to check out that tribute song!) because I suspect he was actually many different canine actors. When he returns in the 80s/90s shows his body and markings are very different (if I remember right).
The little girl here reminds me of the magician kid in “Guillotine” - they both contribute to the plot but I find them both insufferable 😁!
Columbo is a television phenomenon, a total one-off. The character as portrayed by Falk had integrity, humility, total dedication to his job, and, most important of all, a mind like a steel trap!
Very well done, Maestro.
Hey, you’re a great commenter.
I agree with you, that is my fav too
It deserves to be in the “best episode” discussion much more than it is!
@@EchoesOfColumbo by the way your inside and work is unbelievable. I love all your videos, excellent job.
@@xtc-jewelry Thanks so much!! It means a lot that you enjoy these.
The, “precocious little brat, who talks down to adults,” was definitely a cliché by that time. But then, I was the kind of youngster who, when I first saw this episode, I would roll my eyes Shirley Temple movies and even moments in Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid, but there seemed to be such a child making an appearance in every popular IP of the time. Often being the central character in many shows. It would have been original, even daring, of the writers to make her not precocious.
Wonder if Dog was the reason Cassavetes never came back ‘I will not be upstaged by a damn dog!’
The disdain for this episode comes from the contradiction that familiarity breeds contempt. It is said that the most scientifically beautiful face is also the most average. Average is a insult sometimes, cliche is seen as bad. But when it's pulled off well, it's perfect. All other columbo episodes revolve around this one, coming before and coming after, but this one is quintessential.
One scene I felt went on too long was Columbo sitting and waiting for the maestro to finish practice before bringing him into the film room. We have already seen him conduct throughout the episode and we don't fet any really interesting reaction shots. Having said that, I am reffereing to like 2 minutes out of the 90
@@Bretkane Where he’s conducting indoors in the dark with his sunglasses on! Haha that’s a good call.
@@EchoesOfColumbo That is actually another one, I was thinking of at the hollywood bowl. I think the first conducting scene was so good it left the rest a little plain
Columbo #1, Nero Wolfe A&E #2!!
Oohh now that’s interesting! ARCHIE! The police are to receive NO sandwiches!
@@EchoesOfColumbo FUNNY!!!

Dawidziak again... I do not think much of him and take his writings with a pinch of salt. Your vids are much more enjoyable. Thanks!
I was hoping you’d see that part and approve! Have you read “Columbo Under Glass” by Sheldon Katz? It’s a good resource in terms of raw info about the show but the opinion sections are startling.
