Clearing Land: How I Almost Killed Myself Cutting Down a Tree
Переглядів 4296 місяців тому
I've been working on clearing the land that I purchased earlier this year. Much of the property was covered in blackberries and dense forest. I will be planting an orchard on the property and I need to clear out the dense growth. In this video, I provide an update on my efforts to clear the land and I show a close call that I had with a tree that I was cutting down. Safety first!
Moving the Chicken Coop
Переглядів 3498 місяців тому
When I purchased my house in California, the chicken coop was in the backyard, close to the house. At first this was fine, but the chickens have really been making a mess of the backyard area near the house and its time to move the chicken coop farther away. Unfortunately, the property is very hilly so moving the coop won't be easy. After considering several ideas, I decided to move the whole s...

Does this grow better than Panache on the east coast?
They are both pretty late. You probably need to give them a headstart to get them to fruit.
That’s dad assisting you, and he came all the way down from Eagle Creek, Oregon! 😃
It sounds like it’s working. Congratulations now you’ll have the water you need to grow your figs in the greenhouse.
Now you have to make sure your pond will always have enough water, correct?
Congratulations! I know that’s exciting… possibility now goes to probability… bravo!
So how old is the B20 and how is working for you. I am looking at one and not sure if is a good buy being 30yrs old. I can't find much on the B20's as far as how much they are worth in good condition, etc. Trying to find out how hard it is to remove backhoe and loader as I'm getting older now
I think it’s a mid 90s model. I got it thrown in with the house purchase last year. I think the value is going to depend a lot on the condition. Mine hadn’t been run or maintained in a while. I will say that they seem to run well. Mine runs good despite years of neglect. The hydraulics however are tough to deal with. Due to its age, I’m constantly having to place hoses that blow, and the worst is when I need to get a cylinder rebuilt because some are really hard to get out. I’ve never removed the loader but dont think it’s easy because they didn’t have the quick disconnects back then. The back hoe takes time to remove but can mostly be manipulated by the hydraulics to position it.
Hello I have a rigata rossa on the way. I will post here once I get it to produce to compare. i am in Charles county Maryland. I have a 5 yo Chicago Hardy and I planted this year : VDB, RDB,Bourajosste Gris, Black Jack, Beers Black Black Mission, Brown Turkey, Peters Honey
Love your channel
Is this the backhoe tractor that was on the property when you bought it? Kudos 😊
Yes
Is this the backhoe tractor that was on the property when you bought it?
Yes
Nice video, do you mind listing the 5 varieties you had in ground for the HC type.
MBVS, Black Greek, Improved Celeste, Pastiliere, and Petite Aubique, although only the first two are similar to HC
Thanks for the review! I have a few of these growing here in the Houston Texas region ...so far so good. The legendary grower Vasile "Herman" sold me a few of his that trace back to Belleclaire Nursery. Hope your tree is doing well.
How come you didn’t roundup the ground before planing? Plus you need to cut more trees to allow more sunlight
I don’t like to spray. Eventually I’ll add some grazing animals-just not there yet
im moving to dripping, because i can get more trees on the same zone, just need to increase the time
Drippers are good, especially for pots. I’m hoping to get these trees pretty big so I went with micro sprinklers instead.
My Hollier looks different than this. I sourced mine from Just Fruits & Exotics and my fruits have an amber flesh and look like pics of the Hollier on Just Fruits & Exotics' website. In addition to having a different pulp color, mine does not have an open eye like that when ripe.
Look at trees of joy or lazy dog’s pics. I think you will see that this is an accurate coloring. JFE’s pics look underripe-maybe that is the reason?
Congrats! Let the growing begin!!
I thought you dropped out of the fig community, I followed you when you retired from the military, the traveling with the family, your kids are ADORABLE BTW. So this is what you've been up to?? That greenhouse is TO DIE FOR❤. So are you starting over? I remember you said you stored some figs at your dad's and sounded like they died😢 Did you at least bring rooted cuttings, or cuttings of your more costly varieties?? As a female, the construction part looks better to me when it's done, to women, it's like watching paint dry.. I follow for your knowledge of figs, I also enjoy the family time, and the children.. but I'll keep checking back, best of luck, and very impressive job so far..
Thanks! Yes I’m starting a nursery in Northern CA. I did try to bring a lot of cuttings but the vast majority didn’t make it so I’ve just been growing a new collection of figs from new cuttings. I’m still working on setting up the property so it will probably be a bit longer before the fig trees really get going.
This variety is sold in Italian nurseries under the name Black/Dark Verdone. No need to comment on Nikki's fantasy. He comes up with a variety name the moment he sees the plant. There is no such thing as variety identification for him.
Good to know. Thanks!
Great stuff Pete - best of luck with your business. Talk about doing things the right way!
Your thoughts, now that it has a couple years on it? Also, have you put it in the ground or still in a pot?
I move to CA after the growing season shown in the video. I had to start over with my figs so I don’t have any additional input at this time.
That’s quite a bit of water and a great big pond you have there😮
Where do you get all your ambition?
Could you do a comparison to the pervious ones? Also any fig recipes or what I can do with figs?
In due time…
Are you on a first name basis with the equipment rental store? :) You've put a lot of hard work into your place. Great job.
Thanks. I actually did that with my kubota tractor
Awesome build Pete, gave me a few ideas once I'm ready for one...on a smaller scale though. Great progress!
Great explanation Pete. Looking forward to the rolling bench demo. One question - is the greenhouse solely for commercial operation - i.e. growing cuttings for sale? If so, what's your plan for growing larger trees for your own figs and for cuttings to sell? Will you have an outdoor orchard too?
Yes I will use it to grow things for sale. You are correct that I will need an outdoor growing space or orchard to supply the scion wood used for propagation in the greenhouse. I’m working on getting that going now. Due to the amount of grading and earthwork required I had to get the greenhouse done before I could setup all the outdoor irrigation for the orchard.
Seriously though, the beard is starting to scare me 😂 Always enjoy the videos, keep them coming.
Enjoyed the video Pete, can’t wait to see it in full production.
Good Job Pete
that looks beautiful

Great video. Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for!
Hell of a process, gave me anxiety just watching it. Amazing greenhouse, congrats. Thanks for sharing.
Post service beard achieved. Veteran status complete.
😆
So informative and well done as always Pete! You are doing it man!!!!
Incredible project Pete. Your attention to detail is excellent!
Very nice but I'm a little curious how the table works. What is the plan is this just for fig tree propagation?
Others have questioned how the rolling benches work and their purpose. I’ll explain that in a video later. For now my focus is on figs but I am interested in diversifying into at least one other crop-just not sure what yet
Very awesome Pete, can't wait to see you have this thing in full swing!
Hell yeah Pete good luck bro
Fear the beard! 😂👍
That's an awesome greenhouse Pete. Congratulations on having finished it. I can't wait to see you rebuild your fig orchard!
What mean 'very good'? Is it sweet ? Very sweet ? Any acidity ?
So cool Pete. Welcome to California. I’m in SoCal and have been growing a few fig trees in ground for 40 years. My first was Black Mission of course and then over time I added Calif Brown Turkey, White Genoa, Desert King, Panache and Kadota. In December a plant buddy gave me cuttings of 15 varieties and that really got the fig addiction going even though I haven’t eaten anything from them yet. Watching your tasting videos has helped me to learn about all the amazing figs out there. To make a long story short I had such good success rooting cuttings (~95%) that I’m already around 100 varieties. I’m growing them in 5 gal for now until I figure out which ones do best in my area and appeal to my wife and I flavor wise. Then I have plenty of space to get the favorites into the ground. Culling is going to be difficult but I’ll have to cross that bridge over the next couple of years. My last batch of cuttings (18) came from Harvey of Figaholic fame and now that those are taking off I will be getting them into 5 gal shortly. Thanks Pete for all that you share in your videos. I have learned a lot from you and I’m hoping to get some trees that are grown in that beautiful greenhouse you have put up. I will be watching for them to become available. Take care.
What do you recommend for east coast?

Joualle Noir means "black cheek" in French! I just planted one. I hope it does well!
What beer and wines go well with fresh figs ?
Now that’s a good topic for a video 😄
Thank you for the great video
I think you should name that goat Twister! So now you're a goat wrangler. Poor Ben didn't have a handle to hang on to. I think Jen is the Goat Whisperer :) (Referring to the Robert Redford movie The Horse Whisperer.) Good job everyone!
The other two goats that escaped from the trailer just followed, the other one didn’t they? 😂
Yes fortunately they were the two tamer ones
What’s the plan with the goats? Permanently residents or temporary hired clearing bulldozers ?
