So cool Pete. Welcome to California. I’m in SoCal and have been growing a few fig trees in ground for 40 years. My first was Black Mission of course and then over time I added Calif Brown Turkey, White Genoa, Desert King, Panache and Kadota. In December a plant buddy gave me cuttings of 15 varieties and that really got the fig addiction going even though I haven’t eaten anything from them yet. Watching your tasting videos has helped me to learn about all the amazing figs out there. To make a long story short I had such good success rooting cuttings (~95%) that I’m already around 100 varieties. I’m growing them in 5 gal for now until I figure out which ones do best in my area and appeal to my wife and I flavor wise. Then I have plenty of space to get the favorites into the ground. Culling is going to be difficult but I’ll have to cross that bridge over the next couple of years. My last batch of cuttings (18) came from Harvey of Figaholic fame and now that those are taking off I will be getting them into 5 gal shortly. Thanks Pete for all that you share in your videos. I have learned a lot from you and I’m hoping to get some trees that are grown in that beautiful greenhouse you have put up. I will be watching for them to become available. Take care.

What a cool project! At one point I had grand plans of having a large climate-battery greenshouse built here in MD but as I planned it out I became overwhelmed with the project. I questioned whether I really wanted to take on something like that as a hobby. I decided to scale way back and built a cattle panel greenhouse to give a few trees a headstart and be happy with that. In your case it will be a business so it makes more sence. I'll live vicariously through you, haha! By the way, the White Triana I got from you as a mature tree is doing great in-ground here.

Good to hear from you! Yeah if I had stayed in VA at my old house my plan was to build a new greenhouse but it was going to be a custom one that I would basically design myself. It was going to be partially underground and use pipes routed through the backyard as a heat sink. It would have been pretty crazy. Ultimately I decided to just move and not improve the existing greenhouse there.

Everything is looking good Pete. What were the things that helped you to decide to move to this part of California. I assume one of them is the fig wasp is in this area👍I could just guess how beautiful the countryside is around there. And i know
It's always an extensive job to build on a hillside. And the contractor your using looks to be doing a great job.

Thanks! I chose this part of California because it was developed enough to have good schools and keep my wife happy while having property costs that, while expensive, were significantly cheaper than SoCal or the Bay Area. Also, Placer and Nevada counties have irrigation infrastructure that makes water less of an issue than in some other parts of Cali.
