  • In this video I cover the processes and best practices that I use when rooting fig cuttings.
    I use a "direct plant" fig rooting process. There are many different ways to root fig cuttings and this is by no means the definitive or only way to root cuttings, but it is the method that I prefer.
    If you like my videos, please subscribe to my UA-cam Channel, and check out my website, where I sell many of the varieties in my collection throughout the year:

    I was trimming my figs (the local bullet proved variety), and I just stuck a few sticks directly in the ground just to see what was going to happen. 90% of them actually rooted. I tried rooting fancy varieties with pods, rooting hormone heating mats, and all the goodies, and barely 20% made it. So sometimes doing less is more.

    I am trying a different approach. By putting the new cuttings in a vase with water to develop root initials. ( Lateral root initiation ) after two weeks or so, In to a container with potting mix. Keep it warm.
    75 degrees plus. Thanks for your videos.

      They will initiate rooting quickly in water but can be difficult getting them to transfer successfully into another medium. Often times the roots will die have to root all over again in the new medium.

    Just getting into growing figs for maybe the last year so your info is very helpful - and timely. I have rooted a few figs already successfully, but I do struggle with keeping the moisture low and properly adjusted. And I am also using the direct potting method, but with just a commercial "potting mix". I've also never even considered your weighing method so I might have to give that a try at some point - I'm currently trying to root probably all I'll root for this year. Thanks for your advice.

      Make sure you use potting mix that does NOT have fertilizer (like Osomocote) in it. It will burn young growing roots when they first work out through the cambium layer. Try using the "Cacti - Orchid potting mix and Perlite and mix around 50/50 each). I have about a 90% success rate AND I really try hard to SAVE every little cutting. If you use a garage/room that can have around 80% humidity that will help. ALSO, if you get fungus gnats, get the BT Mosquito pellets, mix in water and use that FRESH to put a few drops in each cup to kill the gnats.
      Good luck and Happy Holidays!

    Hi Pete. I think you're very much for the detailed videos you have been posting as they have been so much help. In your opinion as an experienced figster, what would be a reasonable hydration band using exact same setup except for using promax HP instead of promax BX!? Thanks much!

    • @FigLifedotcom

      I haven’t used promix hp but I’d guess it’s pretty similar. Through experimentation you can figure it out. My trees leaves usually start to die at about 350g weight. 550g corresponds to about a 5:1 mix:water ratio.

    One thing regarding cutting the bottom part - rather than cutting below the node, try cutting through the node, or at least through the edge of the node. That's not my invention, but I've adopted it. Less rotting, more uniform roots coming from such a cut. And scratching works for some cuttings and so much for others. It all depends on the actual maturation of each cuttings' wood.

    Nice video Pete.
    I didn't notice you tap the pot the settle the medium. Is that something you do or just leave it loose as shown in the video?
    When do you start adding fertilizer to the watering and what do you typically use?
    Dip and grow works good . What concentration do you go with 5x or 10x ?
    Lastly what's the fungus gnat situation there? Here they are they biggest hindrance to starting indoors.

    • @FigLifedotcom
      @FigLifedotcom  2 роки тому +3

      Generally I leave it pretty loose. I use half strength miracle gro for most watering. Usually 10x but sometimes closer to 5x. Fungus gnats seem to always show up eventually. I just use gnatrol with each watering and they are never a problem.

    Pete, thanks for the video. I'm coming back to this method after using DE for a couple years. Do you by chance know how much your potted up cuttings weighed on the day you potted them up? Mine are coming out to be around 680-750 g each. I was actually thinking of adding water to somewhere close to what the original weight was. However, you were suggesting watering up to 550 g. It may not matter too much but just wanted to get your thoughts.

    • @FigLifedotcom
      @FigLifedotcom  5 місяців тому +1

      No I watered to the original weight. 550g would be very dry. I haven’t rewatched it recently but I think what I meant was that I typically let them get down to 550g then watered to restore them to their original weight. Typical weight when I first potted them was about what you got. Eventually I got tired of weighing them at the start and just assumed they were about 750g.

    Thank you for the excellent video. What's the humidity of your grow room? Do you have fan to add air flow? I root my cutting in the open space. I do noticed that it was drying out a little bit too fast and constantly having to water.

    Ok, Im in 2 positions. 1 cutting I wrapped with parafilm and I use a plastic cup. It started to show leaves, but I don’t se any roots, is almost the 3rd week. And the second cutting I didn’t wrap it started to show some rot in the top of the cutting, and some leaves grow and I didn’t see roots too. 😢 I’m newbie with this. And I find your channel. I use dip n grow for the 2 cuttings.

    • @FigLifedotcom
      @FigLifedotcom  2 роки тому

      Are you looking for advice? Just leave the cuttings at this point. Either they will make it or not, but it won’t help to move them around. I don’t understand how you would get rot on the top of an unwrapped cutting. Are you sure it isn’t dried out? That can happen when you don’t use parafilm.

    I start all my garden seed in my oven. The pilot light keeps it at 75 to 80 temp. I put them under light after they emerge. I’ve never rooted fig but I think it will work the same. I’ve got a order of cuttings in the mail to me now. What fig would you recommend that’s more cold hardy than Celeste but taste better and has a closed or resin sealed eye. I have problems with dried fruit beetle souring my figs some years. I’ve heard Chicago Hardy needs heavy pruning to produce but I don’t want to prune. I planted my Celeste back in 1987 and it was huge until we got a record low temp of -3 here in Texas last winter. It froze to the ground but it’s regrown to 9’ tall this year. It was taller than my home.

      I like LSU Tiger. I don’t know how cold Hardy it is, but it’s early so it would probably recover from a freeze

    Hey Pete...In my grow room I have a timer for my grow lights, they get about 12 hrs of light per day....Do you cycle yours or just leave the lights on continually?

    • @FigLifedotcom
      @FigLifedotcom  2 роки тому +1

      I haven’t turned the lights on this season yet, but when I do I will leave them on 24/7. Although, it’s not for the reasons you would think. It’s actually for temperature control. The lights create heat, and I use it in place of the space heater. If I cycle the lights on and off it makes temperature control difficult. It’s much easier to just maintain an unchanging environment. If I cycle the lights on and off it changes the room temperature so I just leave them on and the room temperature remains constant.

      @@FigLifedotcom Ah ok, thanks for the reply...I started out that way, leaving my lights on....but after much research, I have taken the approach that plants need the downtime to metabolize the energy they had taken on during the light hours. So I set mine on a timer that mimics the actual day and night hours. But I was just curious how you do it and others, I know you are pretty successful in your rooting. To each their own. lol Thanks again Pete.

      @@FigLifedotcom I've been weighing my rooting cuttings as well. Thanks for the tip on the right weights with the 4x9 pots. I just got some of those so it is very helpful. I have been told that once the roots are well established there is little chance of rot so you can water them much more without worry. I do find that weighing is a hassle so I would like to know your thoughts on that and how well developed the cuttings need to be before you don't need to weigh them anymore.
      And congrats on your upcoming retirement. I too have begun planning for retirement. Maybe a couple more years when my mortgage is paid off lol!
