  • This is my end-of-season review of the best fig varieties of 2021. In this video I will be ranking my best proven fig varieties during 2021. I will be making a separate list describing the best new varieties or figs with the greatest potential. I grow my figs in Northern Virginia.

    Really appreciate that you've already done so much work on figs, it really helps newer guys like me. Thanks also for the NSDC, Gegantina, and Black Manzanita I acquired from you on FigBid recently, those are 3 of the last 7 figs on my wish list, so you really helped me out there. Take care and God bless!

    Pete, I am bummed you moved west but I am sure it is good for you and your family. I am a fig neophyte living in SE Virginia (7b/8a). Your videos have been most helpful.

    Very enjoyable video. I agree that you can not make elaborate fig rankings especially when it comes to comparisons of fruit quality. General conclusions such as tree vigor, early vs late ripening and growth habit are valuable. After years of growing figs I believe so much depends on microclimates, specific heat, pruning, watering, the annual weather patterns and soil composition, especially with container trees. I have grown figs that refused to fruit for years and then just as I was ready to discard it produced outstanding tasting fruit. I think there are so many things going on in the soil regarding microbes/fungi and tree hormones we are only beginning to understand. (multi factor synergy is how one fruit explorer describes it) Keep up the great videos!

    Hey I just stumbled on your channel. I’m in NoVa as well! Just starting this fig game. Someone on the forums recommended you and that you live in the area so the material you give out is 100% relevant.

    Great video, thank you! Not too many reviewers give out good info on splitting and honest taste profiles. I really appreciate the information. I would have liked to know which HC/ME ones you have compared to come up with RLBV on top. I like that you compared it to Malta Black, but wondering if it beat some of the other ones like Takoma Violet, MBVS, BI39, St. Rita, etc., or if you just don't have experience with them.

      Yes I’ve tried all those. If I had to pick one I’d pick RLBV but they are all good

    Can you do a video of how you overwinter your figs? Are you wrapping them?

    I live in Woodbridge VA. When would you suggest I begin the rooting process indoors for refrigerated cuttings?

    • @FigLifedotcom
      @FigLifedotcom  2 роки тому

      It depends on your setup. If you don’t have any grow lights or anything you could probably start rooting in Feb. It will take about a month to start growing. You could keep it in a window for about another month and then it would be able to go outside starting in Apr as long as you protected it from freezes.

    Interesting, but a little confusing when the "proven winner" page contains an entry that says"...it hasn't been my best performing..." so maybe you need another page entitled "shows promise?"

      😂 Yeah I know. I didn’t have anywhere else to put it. I guess I could create a “Figs I’m losing patience with” category
