This video is a mix of footage from the P1000 and a small Akaso action camera.

Yes, the P1000 is for sure a handful! Most of my photos and videos at full zoom are on a heavy, solid tripod. My hand held shots can be pretty shaky! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I use an older Fancier FC-02H tripod with a fluid video head. I made a custom tripod mount that shifts the P1000 back a little so the camera's center of gravity while zoomed in is over the center of the tripod. I also use a FEELWORLD T7 Plus 7" external monitor to help see exactly what is in focus.

Switching to the moon setting with autofocus on should be all you need to do. Sometimes, when you zoon in really close to certain areas of the moon, there isn't enough contrast so the camera can't focus. You can try to pan to a different area of the moon and press the shutter button half way down to see if that will allow the camera to autofocus. If it does then switch to manual focus to lock in that focus. Repeat those steps if you change the focal length. I hope that helps!

Nikon is still selling the P950, which can zoom up to 2000mm (35mm equivalent) and is smaller and lighter than the P1000. But the question is will Nikon come out with a new version of the P1000?

Perhaps! :) I like to think that it's filled with red fruit juice. But alas, it's probably just red color glass, which is kinda boring :)

I've not tried that, but there are some pictures on the internet of the International Space Station using the P1000. Seems rather difficult to get a good image though.

Agreed, it's hard to find a place where heat waves and particulate matter are not a problem! Mornings are usually a good time of day. It's great to hear that you might pick-up the P1000 again!

I'm still using my old Fancier FC-02H tripod. I think that the key thing is to buy or make a plate/mount that shifts the camera's center of gravity over the center of the tripod head when it's significantly zoomed. The P1000 has vibration reduction, but super telephoto can be a challenge even with stabilization.

Hi! Are you enlarging the pictures in this video? If so then keep in mind that although the S9400W's pictures are 4608 x 3456, they are inside this older video which is only FHD resolution. So the pictures were essentially converted to 1920x1080 when the video was rendered. Pictures straight out of the S9400W would look better when enlarged. At least for a ten year old camera :)

Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback. These super telephoto cameras need a lot of light so probably not the best choice in lower light situations. I've not been on many dawn or dusk photo shoots, but now that you mention it, I think I'll try it!

Hello from Arizona in the USA! Yes, the status of the P1000 is interesting. No announcement from Nikon, but all of the stores show them as out of stock. As of today the P1000 is listed as "on backorder" on the Nikon website and you can still place an order. Strange!

It's great to hear that you enjoyed the video! I used the Nikon COOLPIX P1000 camera which zooms up to 3000mm. Those cameras are hard to find these days, so you could also use the Nikon COOLPIX P950 which zooms up to 2000mm. I hope you enjoy viewing the moon!

Thats hilarious I just ordered the same exact solar filter and probably the same remote you have off of Amazon. Will be in San Antonio for the eclipse. Have you been able to test the filter? Is it good quality and works well? Just want to make sure its not awful quality as the review images weren't much help. It's arriving in a few days for me.

@@-Burb I took a image of the Sun mid-day handheld and wow...not bad at all! I was lazy and screwed on top of my clear filter (I use it to just keep the lens clean/protected) and that rendered a duplicate image. Took off the clear and mounted the ICE and nice image HANDHELD! With a tripod and remote will only be better. Don't miss the Riverwalk in San Antonio...lovely area!

With the P1000, the sun can fill the frame, so during the partial portion of the eclipse, I've taken most photos in full auto. When the sun is mostly eclipsed or I back off on the focal length then I just adjust the exposure down in exposure compensation. I posted an article on my website with my thoughts. As for the total eclipse, I'll have to let you know about settings after April 8th as that will be my first experience! What settings are you using as you practice?

These will all affect and/or distort the light moving through the atmosphere on it's way to the camera's lens. That applies to the P1000 and other high telephoto lenses. Good question though. Maybe I'll do a test of the same subject from different distances to provide some example answers to your question.

I use a solar filter from Thousand Oaks Optical. I bought it on their website - thousandoaksoptical.com. But I checked today and these filters are currently out of stock :(

Yes! There is tons of proof earth is a flat plane except for mountains and valleys. There are laser test ect.. that prove so. Type in on YT, "Canada Laser Test Proves the Earth is Flat"

I recorded the raw video with the Samsung Galaxy S21 and then slowed it down a little more in postproduction.

The P950 is also an excellent super zoom camera. A little less reach, but lighter and smaller!

That's great that you're going to get a P1000! I also enjoy zooming in on planes at cruising altitude which you can do from almost anywhere.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, my thought is that if size and price are the priority then choose the P950 and if having as much reach as possible is the priority then choose the P1000. Both are excellent super zoom cameras!

I've used the P1000 for basic outdoor sports photography and it worked fine for a point-and-shoot camera. I should note that it is a large camera . The P1000 is a maniacal zoom machine, so it excels when the sports action is far enough away that other cameras cannot frame the shot that you want.

Exactly! :) I actually used my binoculars all the time before I bought my Nikon P900 and then my P1000.

Thanks for the feedback! I know what you mean about stabilization. Even when Vibration Reduction is available (for still photos and FHD/1080p videos), you can sometimes still get shaky results. The massive 3000mm zoom is a monster to control! I use my heavy duty tripod all the time and I sometimes apply digital stabilization in post-production. Especially with UHD/4K videos because VR is not available. I think encasing the camera in concrete would also help :)

Agreed, the zoom lens on the P1000 is amazing! Can you imagine carrying around all of the lenses required to cover the zoom range of the P1000? That would be a lot!

@@OneLensTwo I decided to buy the P950 though - less weight, although less zoom, -1000mm, but I love it! 💗
