Welcome, this channel was created to share ways to stay connected with family and friends. We will post about projects, producing healthy sustainable and antibiotic free foods, all while working full time and raising 3 children. Family, friends, and likeminded people can follow along as we teach our children to take an active interest in what they consume and practice self-sufficiency. Through the process of micro-farming and maintaining our property we are continually growing as people and a family. Check out what we are working on and let us know what you think. We are interested in learning from you too!
Overpowered Com-Pac 16 under full main and Genoa on a gusty sunset sail
We went for an evening sail and brought the wrong headsail bag. It was a 15 MPH day with some periods of strong gusts to 22. We decided to go out anyway. Occasionally we needed to head up into the wind to lose power but the Com-Pac 16 is a solid little boat and tolerated being overpowered very well.

Wet and windy Florida camping trip in a Com-Pac 16

We took our Com-pac 16 cross country again for a week long cruise in the Pensacola area. This was my wife’s first experience camping on the boat. We chose to get off the water for two days to avoid some bad weather, but it was still a great trip. We saw lots of dolphins and had a memorable experience sailing.
Fiberglass boat repair using $8 PC-11 Marine epoxy putty

This Com-pac 16 has a hole drilled through the deck that needs to be filled and faired. There are also gouges on the leading edge of the keel that need to be repaired. PC 11 is an inexpensive epoxy putty that can be mixed in small batches and applied in less than ideal conditions. PC 11 is also very easy to work with because it doesn’t sag or run.

Coosa board stern replacement on a 1965 O’Day Javelin sailboat
Переглядів 4072 роки тому
The Marine Plywood stern on this 1965 O’Day javelin sailboat was soft and rotten. The way the boat is made exposes plywood end grain to the weather. Coosa is more expensive than marine plywood, but it is impervious to water and rot. The Coosa board is also lighter and stronger than plywood. For a novice, the job was fairly easy. The end result was a strong waterproof repair.

GM needs to stop making or buying cheap bolts from the supplier. This has been going on for decades and those bolts should be stainless steel. The bolt heads start to disappear as the years go by. Those after market people are getting rich over a defect. The exhaust manifolds rust too quickly also.
How’s this boat for sleeping? You said cramped quarters but can you have a comfortable nights sleep? I’m 5’8 195lbs
@@tonystefanetti2476 It really depends on your personal circumstances. I’m 5’11 and 200 pounds, but I’m a relatively narrow build. If you are wide through the hips you will likely touch the deck on your side. If you’re claustrophobic at all you may not like the snug berth. I cut dual density foam to go under the cushions. This raised me up several inches but it helps me a lot. I’m 50 and have some persistent aches and pains from broken ribs and injuries. I can “handle” 4 to 5 nights in there after adding better cushions. I also keep the little portable toilet tucked under the entry so I have room to put two floating cushions on the floor in front. I fill in the void to rest my arm close to level with my body. This allows me to lay comfortably on my back. Here is the trade off (in my opinion). The 16 is heavy and forgiving enough to easily single hand. Especially if you have the mark II with the anchor and bow sprit. It’s like a big boat in a tiny package. That narrow bow and little deck can quickly shed a wave in rough conditions. The berths are very deep and can hold a lot of parts, rope, spare anchor, totes etc. The compromise is that little deck and narrow hull means that cabin is really snug and pulling supplies out is tedious. Not ideal for cruising and sleeping but I’ve traveled to some great places in a little boat. That allows me to tolerate the confined space. I’ve considered doing a video on modifications we made to rig and travel with the 16 to help others determine if this boat would be a good fit for them.
So 3 years in, still happy? All working safely? I’m awaiting shipment of mine. Thank you for this great video!
@@Dadhustle Yes, I would do it again. I did an adjustment for some stretching of the cables. The safety locks hit slightly differently. A tape measure and a few turns on the cable nuts addressed the problem. I’ve used the lift for repairs way more than I intended. I have dropped a couple fuel tanks to get at other systems. Before the lift I would have paid someone because of the hassle. With the lift you can get another person under there and make some of those jobs much easier.
@ Thanks for the update and the video! Excited to get started with my own
Video is so dark you can’t see anything.
Had mine over a year. I'm pretty disappointed in the four caster roller system to move these. Yea, you can look on-line and see folks pushing these around but it reality nine settles to less than 3/16 off the floor. The pegs on the poles (for jacking) should have been welded about 1/2 lower. So if you have an uneven garage floor or even sloped floor you are in for a surprise. That is about the only thing I am unsatisfied with on the Tuxedo 8K lift I have.
I have only used the casters the one time but I think you’re right. If I rolled this outside it would be problematic to get it back in over the transition. Other than adjusting the lift to address some stretch of the cables it’s been working well for me.

This brings back memories! I bought a compac 16 brand new in 1994 in Denver. Sailed it for 10 years. Being a self employed machinist I would take off for Homestead Fl. in October, sail down the Keys to Key West , take a bus back up to get the Toyota 4cyl pickup and trailer and hang for a while sailing and just loved it. Sailed to the marquesa keys one time, about 40 miles from key west if I remember. Did this 7 times! Some times alone, others with a gal and dog! 😮 Took the dog once to Catalina in Ca. for 2 weeks. Circumnavigating the entire island. Lake Powell 2 weeks. Lake Granby 2 weeks. Lake Pueblo so much I could say I have lived there for a year! Best years of my life. I then owned a compac 23d for 7 years based on west coast of Fl. Even better stories there. Great boats. Cheers !
@@baronvondooshnozzle Sir. You have done the bucket list of trailer sailing. You have my respect.
Loved your Florida video (this one too). I’m a West coaster looking into getting a Com Pac 16 and have a question about the different configurations. I know some of the later models have a centerboard to help in pointing. Is that an option that varies from boat to boat or was it standard on later models. Does your boat have the centerboard and if so, how much does it compromise the cabin floor? Thanks for your posts.
@@timneely946 No center board on mine. I think it was an option for the last few hulls produced. I saw one for sale not too long ago. Spendy. I recall the little keel contained the center board and the floor seemed the same. Don’t quote me though. This one does OK if you can keep the speed up. Light wind it sideslips. A good foil rudder is essential. The beauty of the little keel is it’s pretty tough for beaching/trailering and it keeps you from getting in trouble in bigger water. The little keel lets the boat tip and spill wind rather than try to dig in. I have grounded my boat a few times in unfamiliar shallow sand bars and there is no worry about damaging a center board. Of course what you can’t see in this video is if we get a few too many degrees off the wind the Genoa will easily spin this boat around because there isn’t enough keel to counteract the headsail that’s too big. Centerboard could help. Could tip us over. Either way there’s compromise and you’ll have fun learning what your boat will and won’t do.
does your rooster crow a lot, I chose a faverolles rooster so I honestly cant wait to hang with him

The most fun I've ever had on a boat was in a Venture 17. I was dating my girlfriend at the time. It was 1975. Eventually, we sailed from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island (a distance of about 25 miles) Where we got married on a hill overlooking Avalon Bay. Today, we live on a 40-foot sailboat and have for the last 20 years. Never a day goes by, though, that I don't think about that boat and the fun we had learning how to sail (among other things). 😊
@@jamesbaldwin7676 We can relate. My wife and I had a tiny camper when we were first married. We reflect on simpler times quite a bit. She encouraged me to buy this little boat. She said if I bought a bigger boat the opportunities for trips like this would be few and far between. She was right. I can take that little boat for an afternoon or a week. It’s been a lot of fun. Catalina is on my list. Probably with a larger trailer sailor though.
Ahoi! I’m in Madison and am considering a com-pac 16 for lakes both local and great. @@JonasRoss-g6n I get that boat down to Madison a handful of times a year. Work schedules and weather makes trailer sailing unpredictable. It would be difficult to coordinate the next outing. We can try and answer your questions about the pros and cons of this particular boat. I’m sure a phone call could be arranged.
Loved it....
Hello, I just bought a Com-Pac 16 from the madison area and was woundering if you had any tips on improving upwind perfromace-I recently took it out and noticed a lot of side slippage when pointing it higher into the wind-Thanks!
@@milesstimac6548 the little keel limits windward performance but I have found sail trim and keeping speed up helps a lot. This boat goes out on days most people are headed in. It won’t love light wind days. Slow = slip. It took some experimenting to figure out what worked and I’m still open to new ideas. Initially I could only get 3.5 to windward and now I can do 5.5 pretty reliably. Practice and you’ll probably teach me something new. First thing I would do is get hold of a foiled rudder. Helps immensely with control and performance. Spendy but worth it. I have them on both of my sailboats. I keep my rigging pretty tight with a taught forestay. When pointing the 16, keep the jib sheets inside the rigging so you can keep the jib close in to the mast. Sheets should be pulling down more toward deck than back. If your boat has the travelers move them forward all the way. The 16 has a heel sweet spot. Too much loses speed and that loses forward progress. Experiment with your positioning or passenger positioning to keep the boat heel to a minimum. Tinker with the boom position. Move it around to get the headsail feeding the main efficiently. Sail shape/rigging in this video compared to the “we towed a compac 16 across the country” Gulf of Mexico video I posted is vastly different. That was when I first started sailing the 16 and I clearly didn’t have a good grasp on what the 16 prefers in that video. I have the mark II which sails a little better than the mark I. Not sure hull you have but these comments will be applicable either way. I sail Mendota pretty regularly. Maybe we will cross paths out there!
@@growntogether9913 Thanks for getting back to me, I will defintley do some experimetation this weekend again and implment the adivce you gave. It is very possible that I did not have enough sail up (under douuble reef) to build up speed. Nevertheless it will be fun to figure it out. That is a beautiful lake, I will keep an eye out for your boat when I go out there! I sail out of Port Washington on Lake Michigan for the most part. Thanks again for the repsonse and I think your videos are awesome!
@@milesstimac6548 I have one other thought for you if you’re on Lake Michigan. Current on big water most definitely plays a factor for these boats. If the wind and water direction are against you that side slip can be very problematic for a small boat. Thanks for the kind words and have fun with your boat!
@@milesstimac6548how’s she do in chop? Lake Michigan was a beast against my 30 footer, and I’m trying to find a Compac 16 myself, but curious how they do in the rougher conditions. I’m out of Milwaukee, btw.
@@SailorJasonTaylor It's hard for me to make a comparison - I crew on a 40' and my last boat was 18'- compared to these two boats I would say that the compac is its own thing: there is definitely less slamming when beating to Winward and the boat has more of a bobbing motion to it as it sits in the water rather than riding on top of the water. I took the compac out last Friday in about 20knts of wind and 4' seas with a fully reefed main and jib. It handled the sea state perfectly in my opinion for such a small boat and I did not have any close calls or near-death experiences. As for the known issues with this boat such as getting upwind, I really did not have a problem, just slight drift to leeward. It is a very seaworthy boat but quite different than larger boats. If you are unable to find a Com-Pac 16 I would also recommend the Compac sun cat - My family had one of these when I was growing up and it too was incredibly good in Lake Michigan and a quality boat. That cool your so close, I would like to sail down to mke at some point this season - let me know if and when you get one, could do a meet up and compare notes

Sanding some gel coat to make a colour match dust to work into the top bit of PC-11 epoxy has worked to nearly hide the repair on a green canoe and carbon dust worked for a black snowmobile hood. Your repair looks good as is plus you have a conversation piece too.

I think we call these trips "memorable adventures"... My daughter was once 13... Now she is 42, and we still laugh about one trip - and my falling A over K and straight into the tide... Creating memories - we all need to do more of this ...
How long did it take ?
I think it depends on your abilities. I had to replace wheel cylinders and cut and split the rear drums to get at them. Took me most of the day but my rust situation was severe.
I wondered what that job would entail. I bought a used moored 1970 J in 1984, and the owner had home fiberglassed the syern as it had gotten soft. It was a sloppy job but good enough for me for two years on a large bay...as I didn't own a motor. I wouldn't have trusted it with anything more than a troller. I trailered it and always kept it dry. I trailer parked it at a brokerage after I bought a SJ21 for two years and it got softer...since nobody bought it (hey free dry storage) I thought about rebuilding the transom but I was going to sell it for $900...so I bought a GetRot kit from the broker's chandlery for $30....drilled holes and filled the whole thing with get rot (basically thin fiberglass resin)...then coated it with matte and repainted. I felt better selling it that way...which I did about 2 months later to a lady that lived on the bayfront and wanted a pier runner. A couple years later I passed her on the bay. She was still very happy with it. Good looking job. Excellent finished product. Boat looks better without that aqua two tone they had till the mod 70s. Did the seat gap get filled with a stack of coosa board cutouts?
I did cut several coosa inserts to support the cut out pieces and used thickened epoxy in a caulk tube to glue everything back in to place. This was not a cheap repair by the time I replaced the rub rail and painted the boat. It does get compliments at the boat launch and I don’t have to wax or fuss about the finish since going to polyurethane boat paint. If you’re ever considering doing it on a different project boat the repairs turned out great and I think it was worth the effort.
Just my luck...the #8 cylinder had the exhaust leak. Bought the 917-142 and damnit if the rear bolt hole that this was supposed to attach to was broken off! Fortunately, the rear bolt that was missing from the exhaust manifold was just missing and not broken off.
😢
Really nice video and adventure. I also go on sailing trips with my daughter here in Ontario with our trailerable 22ft Edel, and currently planning to go to Florida next year
