Thank you for the great video. I have pulled my motor and am in the middle of replacing the inner transom plate so I can't start the motor and it's getting cold. My boat and motor is almost 50 years also. As a matter of fact my motor is identical as yours. Ford 302 with the 225 S outdrive. Great motor and still runs strong. Want to keep it that way.
Agreed. It is a good engine. Mine is a little particular about the type of oil I use. If I don’t use 20w 40 or 50 it will use a bit. Other than that it’s been bulletproof.
I still use the Mercruiser 20w 50. Have about 900 hours on it. It's a 1974. Have rebuilt the carb a couple of times, points, plugs and usual maintenance and finally blew the coupler. Have never had any trouble with the engine itself. Mine is particular about the octane. Gotta get it up there at least over 90. I usually shoot for 92 with octane boost and lead combo. Runs great as long as it has lead and strong fuel.
@@ericspeck8881 I think we are about twice the number of hours. I put a carb kit in the Holley that was specifically designed for modern fuel. I run high octane fuel without any ethanol. That 302 runs like a top. We have posted a few videos of trips on Lake Michigan where we traveled over 80 miles in a day. Easy to rack up the hours. I have complete confidence in that engine.
Question for you? when you fill your block with antifreeze to push the water out do you keep the pet cocks open and then let the antifreeze also continue to drain out or do you close the pet cocks and leave the antifreeze in the block? @@growntogether9913
